Nobody suspected a thing because Dan dressed in cheap suit, and drives an old car. He does not seem to be they type that would steal a nickel because he lives modestly. It helped that he seemed to be good at what he does too. This made it easy for him to conceal his gambling addiction, and that he was robbing the bank he works in to feed it. It is not about living large, its simply about the thrill of winning and losing for Dan. It got to a point where he is no longer gambling to win. He is just gambling while he still can

Ahh...but perhaps they are one in the same!
Neil Breen?
Give me my money - stay away from me. Creepiest line in the movie for me
Hoffman was awesome in this movie. But I also love John Hurt as the sleazy casino boss.
RIP to both these guys!
1:24:50 made me absolutely sick to my core seeing him keep on playing after that first loss. This film finally gave me the push I needed to quit gambling. If this film doesn’t make you stop, then it’s only gonna be worse for you.
I think this movie makes you wanna gamble all night
You gotta be an edge player
Good for you! May you be still on the wagon. 👌
If you resonate with this story then I definitely recommend you quit gambling. Most +EV play you'll ever make.
totally agree blipblip, i have to see the best of siskel and ebert of 2003 if they dont a review of this movie, but easily a good movie, going on a philip seymour experience, watching all his movies, so this is my favorite one, and one of its time, poker was big in the early 2000s, and this was taken very seriously which i like about with some moments of comedy. This movie establishes why gambling is to addicting and can ruin a life, such a good performance, thanks for posting this movie, RIP Philip Hoffman;
I always watch this movie up to the Craps scene when he has about 9 Million in front of him. Then I make my own ending
sweet. i remember renting this from blockbuster when it came out dawg
"youre under arrest for theft of $200" LMAO gets me everytime
I laughed too!
I think he actually says, "over two hundred dollars." I assume it's some kind of limit over which it becomes a different level of crime (like grand larceny vs. petty larceny).
OVER $200.
Most realistic gambling movie ever made , the end says it all. But the greatest high for any degenerate gambler is being stuck a ton and getting out . Only thing they didnt explore in the movie . This guy is me to a t . Its crazy , greatest high in the world for me but the lows are brutal . Im 52 i searched it out when i was a kid now its jammed down your throat with casinos literally everwhere, the mobile gambling apps and the constant advertising . Legalizing it everywhere was a horrible idea
Hope you kicked the addiction. My dad gambled away my mom's 500k house, my college fund and half my savings. It destroys everyone around you.
Thank you for your honesty.
I can’t find this movie anywhere on iTunes or anything but I think about it all the time. Ty
Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it
There’s something about Mr. Hoffman’s portrayal of gamblers. Hard 8 was a brilliant rock star at the craps table playing against someone like the casino owner in this. This was him reversed in a sense. Accuracy comes from experience. Rest In Peace you beautiful soul. All the best.
Very astute observation and connection. I absolutely agree with you. RIP.
He tell himself "I bet I can nail this role".
*rock star. “Rockstar” is the trademark name of an energy drink brand.
I had that car mahowny is driving in this film. Damn i curse myself for getting rid of that car. I love the sound of a slant 6 with a glass pack. A cop stopped me once for hitting 80 on an on ramp. I coasted down to 55. I told him sometimes you just got to put your foot all the way in with a slant six because it sounds so wonderful and he agreed with me and said have a nice day.
I used to own a 74 Duster with a sewing machine slant 6. Great car and great motor...
@@evanstrother9137 I had a 64 dodge 330. it was a belvedere with the six not the eight. my x wife left it somewhere in albuquerque when she left me to go to new york, in 1985. just out of spite. man that bummed me for a long time. The car had body damage, but i sewed new seat covers, added a mess of springs from my friend's junk yard to the rear end, new exhausts on it, had the engine built by the best builder in albuquerque. i called it the mud shark, as it was the color of mud, and guard rail damage on both sides of the car. when i had friends in the car they would be amazed how smooth quiet and power full it was. the steering was so easy you just needed a pinky to turn it. and we would take burritos out of the ice chest wrapped in foil, and put them on that exhaust manifold, when you could smell the burrito as you drove you knew they were done. pulled a travel trailer to california for the winter one year, and texas for another winter. Car was so power full you didn't notice the trailer back there. Did you know the bundy mobile was powered by a slant six.
Loses millions of dollars ...but doesn’t want to pay a five dollars bag🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
True gambler. I've seen guys lose £2000 in a day and still steal the sports paper from the betting office.
"BBQ ribs would be good, with no sauce and a coke."
Only saw the movie once but I always remember that line for some reason.
If you guys think watching a drug addict shooting up his life away is sad, watching someone being strangled by an internal sense of pride and greed is a whole other beast.
It’s PURE willpower. Growing up in Vegas I’ve seen a lot of people gamble their entire life away within just a few hands, it’s harder than it looks
He is just gambling while he still can
Love this hadnt seen it b4 so thanks for the upload, psh is also amazing in before the devil knows your dead.
I don't have a gambling problem I have a financial problem.
I like that.
Grow up
I guess a mutual interaction is there between those two problems......
Very good movie thank you so much well appreciated
That college basketball loss, i lost a million bucks that way. It was a $5 parlay but it still haunts me to this day. Make a 🤬 free throw!
I feel like your and Mahowny's relationships to gambling were different, though.
I hit a trifecta at the tracks when I was a teenager out with my family but being a minor I had to have a adult place the bet and she placed the bet wrong. Still won a couple hundred but had she placed the bet correctly I would have won around 350 Gs. I was all excited thinking I could buy a house, pay for college, this that and the other and then she brought the receipt back and I saw the bet/payout. Was so mad at my mom. 1st and last time we ever went together so I feel your pain in losing. 😂
You brought the curse to the table, holy moly deja vu from past
" what am I supposed to do, go to the track and watch '? Ahahhahaha fkng movie is great. If you even gambled big you can taste the authenticity of this guy's plight
The hard crash from loosing. He captures it perfectly.
I’m here after listening to Bill Burrs take on the film. “I can only watch this in 10 minute increments….”
This movie is good! One of my managers met this guy in real life!
30:24 the shot of him crossing the street looks so iconic. I fell like I’ve seen it elsewhere and often.
brilliant sets and amazing performance by the legend
I knew someone who manufactured shells for slot machines. He said they put facial recognition software into hardware.
They can tell when someone is “fresh” their eyes are looking all around, and expression changes more than someone who is “zoned in”.
When they are “zoned in” their eyes stay focused on the corner of the machine, and facial features rarely change.
Casinos employ a whole team just to watch you, just like in this movie.
😧
But what would tgey do with that info?
@@jayeankh5671probably game the software to make you lose more knowing they have a lesser chance of pushing you away after a major lose streak, since you're "zoned in" throwing good money after bad. Just a guess though
Well that’s creepy.
This is up there with The Gambler starring James Caan in the 70s. Very dark and depressing
Philip was amazing.brilliant film.sad hes dead.really explains gambling problem well and how the owners of companies and casinos are evil
No way that dude bagged Minnie Driver 🤣
Classic Brilliant Movie. Brilliant cast. PSH RIP 🙏🏾
Awesome Movie thanks for the upload 🤘❤️🤘
