You couldn't have been more wrong. After thinking about the film, I hated most of it. All of the new material is awful. A ton of Star Wars fans hated. *spoilers* The best part was Luke and Yoda, nothing of the new. Kathleen Kennedy and Disney have butchered the star Wars main line series. I have no hope for episode IX
And now we have the diseaster "rise of skywalker"😂😂
How do you give this movie a pass? Im a passionate prequel-hater but id rather watch a prequel marathon than "the last jedi". What a complete dogshit movie.

I just walked out of the movie theater and I'm also thoroughly disappointed... felt more like a marvel action movie than the star wars I fell in love with so many many years ago... Hollywood machinery is killing the franchise, and fast... sign of the times I guess, and I know it's 2017 now, but if star wars is just like ANY other movie then what's the point?!
The direction this movie goes with the Starwars story is terrible. They hijacked Luke's character and turned him into a completely different person, and The Rey parent reveal.... I can't believe anyone liked it.
I'm finding it difficult to understand why so many youtube reviewers I respect are giving this a huge thumbs up and saying they loved it. I've listened to you and these guys for years and know that we share the same love for the originals and everything that made them great. I thought TFA was a decent restart and that Rogue One was excellent... but this, this film to me is an abomination.
It cheapens almost everything that came before it, it introduces certain jedi "skills" to the film that are utterly ridiculous. "The force" worked before as it felt like it had limits with what you could do. Sure it was powerful, but now basically you can do anything on screen and just explain it away as some jedi hologram nonsense.
Star Wars isn't a comedy either, so why on earth are they trying to ram cheap gags down our throats at what felt like the beginning of every scene.
This is the worst Star Wars film I've seen and it kills me to say that.
I agree with you.. the thing that pisses me off is how this movie addresses questions like who snoke, ( we don't know they killed him off) who is phasam ( Idk they killed her off) who is rays parents( no body yeah cause thatll make the fans happy) and apparently anybody can be born with the force now ex. the kid with the broom and ray even though Vader wiped out the force gene leaving on the skywalkers but whatever to canon

This movie was straight trash. So many plot holes, goofy jokes, Rey is a Mary Sue, SJW garbage, etc. But all of that would be forgivable if they didn't utterly screw over Luke Skywalker!!
So spoilers, but these are the reasons I found this movie very disappointing.
So the first problem was the humor. They felt like gags rather than anything character driven like C-3PO interrupting Han and Leia before they kiss. Finn in a leaking water-suit walking around calling for Rey was...something that happened. It made him look like an idiot. Similar things happen several times.
The second was how small and slow the film feels. The characters hardly go anywhere and circles back to where it began. The Resistance escapes one rebel base just to go to another, older rebel base. One story branch is one long chase scene, but unlike Empire Strikes Back where Han is trying to give the Empire the slip, this was long a boring.
Finn's story line did worse than go nowhere. It gets people killed. It's not even really his story, but the new girl Rose whom we're suppose to care for suddenly.
Poe's story makes him look like an idiot. He's butting heads with this admiral and instead of telling him her plan, he tries to mutiny which ends up doing nothing.
Snoke's plan goes nowhere. It's as though the writer/director/creative oversight said "We've seen this type of evil overlord character before. So instead of doing something a little different and give him a very interesting background and motivation we'll just Darth Maul him."
The scenes with Luke and Rey were good, though Luke is a very different character know. And while I wasn't expecting some kind of epic battle on a scale we've never seen before, we get a rather clever fight between him and Kylo. The entire time the audience was expecting Luke to die, and when its revealed Luke was Force projecting himself thousand of light-years away there was a round of relieved applause that the film did not do the obvious thing and kill Luke Skywalker, only for Luke to die seconds later. Yes, the scene was touching, but this send off to this much beloved character felt hollow.
It was obvious that the idea behind the film was subversion and deconstruction. After waiting two years for Luke to speak, instead we get a joke as he tosses the lightsaber over his shoulder. Finn's efforts to get a codebreaker to sabotage the first order backfire into letting the First Order know the rebels plans. Poe thinks he's found a traitor when really he's just screwing things up. Rey tries to turn Kylo when really he just wants to burn everything. Luke isn't the "legend" people thinks he is and, though his departure is peaceful, felt like a bait and switch of "Oh, he's alive! Nope, he's dead". Snoke dies before really doing anything aside from giving speeches.
Sorry this was so long. It's just that this film has left me slightly heartbroken. I can't even be mad about it. I'm just sad.

phasma was a complete waste too. she was in it for like 2 scenes and her fight with finn was such a let down, it was so short and nothing even happened
the only thing i don’t have a problem with is kylo, he was the only good part of the movie

jailen cobb I did. And again with the Leia scene. It bothered me untill I thought about the gravity inside Sci-fi spaceships! Then I realized real science has been thrown out the window in all Star wars movies anyway. She wasn't sucked out into space either like the other scene. It's the underlying problem I have with the movie. That they want us to take the film seriously when it's emotional, but not serious with the technical/physics/science stuff.

This might surprise you but people can and do lie. How many people negatively rate a movie that they haven't seen because they dislike the cast/director or studio? And the opposite is also true. If you cant control for that then your rating system is bullshit. Love them or hate them but at least critic reviews can be verified.

I just saw it and thought it was a major let down.. I liked Rogue One better and I didn't really care for that movie.. I won't even bother with a second viewing in theaters.

Agree with your assessment. Love this film so, so much. Would have been nearly perfect if they cut the Rose/Finn subplot, or at the very least the Canto Bight stuff. This film reminded me why I've love Star Wars. The future is bright.

The thing about any Star Wars movie is, people expect too much. Not just expectation of how good it should be, but people feel entitled that the story has to go a certain direction, and when it doesn't they feel like it's the movie's problem. When there're real issues, for Star Wars movies they stuck out sourer than flaws from other projects, noticeably!
Which means people WILL be mad with The Last Jedi, and Rogue One and TFA too for that matter, because it's not rocket science to dissect them. Their biggest flaws are too obvious even for general audience without many movie experiences. TFA with too much rhyming ANH, Rogue One with lack of character development and TLJ with the Finn/Rose subplot. I for one loved all three, and felt TLJ was the best among them, despite really not liking that one glaring flaw.
I felt about the same after watching The Phantom menace.So many WTF moments.Yoda has Thor powers,Snoke is a powerful dumbass,Luke is a cowardly almost murderer,pointless subplots,the galaxies most boring starship pursuit ever,plotholes big enough to fly a stardestroyer through.So disappointed.

Any scene with Oscar are the best. Mark did a great job as Luke despite being absent in Star wars Films for years, Carrie Fisher's acting was superb here. But Rey's story arc was basically pointless, the End of the Canto Bight scenes were corny(even for Star Wars standards) and some other stuff I cant say without spoiling the Movie.
Rian Johnson promised A Star Wars film That Fans would want to see. But it didnt do it for me. At best I can only give this movie a 6 out of 10. Rogue One is better than The Last Jedi.

This film was simply stupendous. The scene in the throne room was sensational, Kylo was amazing he is for me the best Star Wars character he has so much more depth than any character in the whole saga!

I loved the film. The main focus was, as it should, on the next generation. Finn's arc was great, although they could've not had Rose in the film at all.
The character work they did with Luke was fantastic. I understand people like living in the past, but the reality is that people grow old and change. That spark to fight sometimes dies with age, especially in people who've been through a lot, and Luke has been through a lot.
We finally seen Leia use the force!
Kylo and Hux are great. I love Hux as a character after 8 and Kylo acted like a true Sith, killing his master without hesitation. The anger and venom he had afterward was fantastic.
Now for dislikes: everything about Rey! I loved Rey after 7, but now it seems she's just a nobody who's as strong as a Skywalker? Nah, I hope Kylo beheads her in 9.
My second dislike are porgs. I want to kill them all! They're the new JarJar.
Best thing is to watch this movie without all these expectations. Don't overthink it because you'll be disappointed if it doesn't go the way you think.

This film absolutely requires a second viewing. My brain felt a bit twisted and abused afterwards because of the sheer weight of all the plot twists and turns. Leaving the theater for the first time I will say that I felt a bit conflicted, yet I was so happy how this film really took you for an unexpected ride. However there are 2-3 pretty major plot points I wasn't thrilled with. I think having the second viewing to digest all this will be necessary and beneficial to a huge fan like myself.

This movie was just...terribly disappointing.
I’m not a hardcore SW fan however loved all the movies so far except this one. Just finished watching the 7 movies before this one and this is by far the worst in my opinion. I could have understood slightly if this was ep 9 but didn’t fit at all as the second film in this saga JJ set up for this film perfectly with so many things to explore and Rian Johnson just chucked them aside. Unfortunately this film will work with a new audience as visually amazing and the soundtrack as always is incredible. Great action movie but horrible SW movie dreading Rian Johnson’s trilogy
I agree the way the movie ends it’s not episode 8 felt more like 9 or starting a new trilogy up. I like the ROTS better than this and I never thought i would say that

It felt like a filler episode of a tv series rather than a second part of a trilogy. Terribly unsatisfying how they treated Luke. Rey is still a bland Mary sue and Daisy still can't act well. Finn served no purpose so was given a pointless sub plot that accomplished nothing other than give the character something to do. Characters introduced just to kill off ten minutes later in a lame attempt to make us feel emotion over their sacrific but without the writers actually having the balls to kill off any main characters we might care about. The awful shoe horned in humour which doesn't fit the movies at all. So many problems you seem to be blind to.
While watching Force Awakens in the cinema I was frustrated by how easily everything came to Rey. I just hadn't heard of the term 'mary sue' to describe it before then. I guess you never ever use a term to describe something that other people have used before, lest you be accused of not coming up with it on your own and that somehow invalidating it. That must make conversation difficult for you as you must then make up your own language that no one else has heard before to describe everything.
Your defense seems to revolve around it being fiction so anything goes. Never mind quality, the laws set within it's own universe and internal logic of the story, established character traits, writing characters well with a point to their being in the story etc. Just that it's Star Wars so it can do as it likes and you'll lap it up. Then resort to implied sexism as an argument. Why not throw racism in there too. Usually an easy way to try win an argument and dismiss others opinions.

Luke didn't league Rogue Squadron in the first one, he was Rogue 5. Luke and Wedge were the only survivors of Rogue Squadron in that fight, and since Luke destroyed the Death Star, he was given the initial promotion to Rogue Leader in Episode V. In Episode VI, Wedge is Rogue Leader.
Princess Leia was a more pro-feminism character than Rey. She was a princess who never cracked under interrogation in torture, took over her own rescue operation and saved Luke, Han, and Chewbacca, is a top strategist for the Rebellion, and actively aids multiple missions, including escaping the first Death Star, escaping Hoth, escaping Bespin, and blowing up the shield generator for the second Death Star.
I didn't enjoy the 20-minute detour to Horse Planet to pick up a stuttering Guillermo Del Toro for no reason at all. They could've just figured out how to breach the shield on their own and cut out an arc that seriously dragged. I wanted to love it. You and other early reviewers had me convinced I would love it. But I thought the film was underwhelming. The answers to JJ's mysteries were unsatisfying, Luke didn't have any real badass moments (his being an astral projection was a great reveal, but still it was his one legendary moment and I felt it was diminished by his not really being there). And aside from the brilliant Rey/Kylo scene in Snoke's chamber ending with that incredible fight with the praetorian guards, every Big Confrontation in the film seemed to just peter out and end because it was time to move to the next scene. To be honest, after seeing it I'm not all that excited about Johnson's upcoming trilogy, and I'm looking forward to Abrams returning for Episode IX. As much as I liked TFA, Last Jedi has even left me wondering if Lucas's original plans (if directed by someone other than him) for 7, 8 and 9 would've been superior to all of this.

Rian Johnson repeatedly gives the answer of "don't care, doesn't matter" to SO many themes and questions of the previous movies. Rians Parents? Doesn't matter. Snoke's origin? Don't care. Luke's core character from the trilogy? Doesn't matter. Training and mentorship? Doesn't matter.

This Movie sucks. Snoke hype was pointless and lame. He is fodderized. No lightsaber battles. His conclusion was lazily done. Story sucks big time: I mean FO chasing Rebels in space? Is that the best story that they can do? The decoder plot goes nowhere. Its just there to make Finn has its own plot. The question is if Finn can escape the main ship then why cant others do the same?

Wrong. Every creative decision has thoughtful meaning and purpose. You just didn't pay attention and follow the film all the way through, beginning to end.
Gotta say guys, 1st time I hated it, but 2nd time I loved it. Go see it again with different expectations if, like me, you thought the character decisions seemed wrong...
AGENT BLACK that's what I keep going around and saying. I loved it because I went in and erased my expectations. I think you need two viewings so that you can go in without the baggage of two years of speculation on what you thought you should have seen.

You could delete an hour of this film and scrape together something that's half decent. The extra hour of total rubbish wasn't needed and cheapened the whole film and franchise.

This movie was horrible, and how could you miss that? The flaws are enormous and numerous. Leia flying through space, admiral snooty, lack of backstory for rey, Rey magically able to do everything with no one ever training her, worthless pointless side story, no backstory to snoke. Nothing really explained. I liked force awakens and went into this movie with high hopes and eager to like it. I walked out feeling punched in the gut.

@@Gdean25 it came absolutely out of nowhere and was so random, we have not seen her use the force in previous movies so it didn't make any sense. Maybe if we saw her using the force from previous movies it would have made more sense and worked . It just felt like a seen that should have been cut from the film

Simple, they watched it, and thought it was good. You don't need to agree with everyone and not everyone needs to agree with you.

No, they're bandwagon jumpers. It pays to review Disney well. You can get exclusives, invites, swag, etc... The sequel trilogy and The Last Jedi especially are an insult to Star Wars in a way that few could have ever imagined. It assassinated the character of Luke Skywalker who was not just the center of the whole Star Wars franchise but one of the most beloved characters in all of movies. Disgusting.

John, I’ll say this first. You sir are amazing at what you do. But I fundamentally disagree with the positive reviews of this film. I believe it was poorly written and we have a directors/writers conflict again. They need to have separate writers and directors. I feel like there was a lot of unnecessary moments in this film and huge let downs. Was it suppose to be this way to hype the last film of the trilogy? Who knows. Milking it ? Yes. If there wasn’t the one main scene, which I won’t mention, it would have made it a 6/10 for me. It brought it to a 7/10 because of the scene. I’m like actually hurt and truly disappointed. I CAN NOT wait for JJ to come back. This film makes JJ a god for making The Force Awakens. My favourite Star Wars besides the originals. Agh I can’t believe im writing this. I will see it once more to give my film review. I know it’s all subjective, but I will say there’s a lot that doesn’t work. I hope there’s someway to explain all this. Thanks for everything Giovani! So dissapointing Leia doing the super man,Luke Skywalker milking a sea animal and drinking it,finn/rose casino scene,Luke just throwing lightsaber away after we waited 2 years to see what he would say,snook being able to feel and see everything kylo does but didn't see a lightsaber beside him shaking and about to kill him ?? We all waited years to see this snook being some special powerful bad guy but just gets killed off easily ? Reys parents ??? Really ??? and not a lightsaber vs lightsaber battle....this film is not for the true star wars fans.....😕😕 THIS FILM IS SO SO BAD AND A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT 😕😕

Matt Rollins believe me, i am not trying to be rude. I had the impression that snope was more connected to the force than both rey and kylo, but he couldnt sense that lightsaber moving? Snope already knew that ben was struggling with his inner demons, so wouldnt he have been more prepared for betrayl? Like kind of been more on guard.

TLJ left me so confused. I have no idea whether I liked it or I didn't. A lot of cool, interesting ideas/directions but I do vehemently disagree with a good few of Rian's decisions.

I honestly don't know how you can claim to love Luke Skywalker and also be thrilled with him in the movie. Disney have destroyed his character completely.
