George Lucas Calls Disney “White Slavers” in Charlie Rose interview

- George Lucas has criticized the latest installment of “Star Wars,” the series he created, in an interview with Charlie Rose, describing the film as too “retro” for his taste and jokingly comparing the Walt Disney Company, which bought the rights to the franchise in 2012, to “white slavers” who had bought his children.
The hourlong interview, broadcast on Dec. 25 and released online this week, focused on Mr. Lucas’s legacy, which was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors this month. But he was harsh in criticizing the film industry for focusing on profit over storytelling.
At one point he said that filmmakers in the Soviet Union had more freedom than their counterparts in Hollywood, who, he maintained, “have to adhere to a very narrow line of commercialism.”
Mr. Lucas appeared particularly unhappy with the direction the “Star Wars” franchise has taken since he sold the rights to it, along with Lucasfilm, his company, to Disney for $4 billion. He compared the sale to a breakup and a divorce.
“These are my kids. All the Star Wars films,” he said. “I love them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them.”
He added, trailing off with a laugh: “And I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and. …”
Mr. Lucas said that he decided to sell his company in part because his filmmaking interests had changed and that the more experimental movies he wanted to make would not be financially successful enough to ensure the health of the company and the well-being of its employees.
Still, he said he had begun working on another “Star Wars” film before the sale, including preparing story treatments and “working with a writer.” But, he said, Disney was not “that keen to have me involved.”
“They decided they didn’t want to use those stories,” he said. “They decided they were going to do their own thing. So I decided, ‘Fine.’ ”
The film that Disney made, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its release on Dec. 18 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.
But not from Mr. Lucas. On Mr. Rose’s show, he criticized the producers and writers of the latest film for emphasizing familiar elements of his previous work - some of which he said had issues - over innovation and storytelling of their own.
“The first three movies had all kinds of issues,” he said of the original trilogy, which was released between 1977 and 1983. “They looked at the stories and said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ All I wanted to do was tell a story of what happened. It started here, and it went there.”
“They wanted to do a retro movie,” he continued. “I don’t like that. Every movie, I worked very hard to make them different, make them completely different with different planets, different spaceships, to make it new.”
Getting over “Star Wars” is like getting over a lost love, Mr. Lucas said. He told Mr. Rose that he tried to approach it the way one would approach the end of a relationship, by focusing on the future instead of the past.
“You have to put it behind you, and it’s a very, very, very hard thing to do,” he said. “But you have to just cut it off and say, ‘O.K., end of ballgame, I have to move on.’ And everything in your body says, ‘Don’t, you can’t.’”
On Thursday, Mr. Lucas apologized for his “white slavers” remark and backtracked on his criticism of Disney.
“I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize,” he said in a statement released to several trade publications.
“I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of J.J. and Kathy,” he said, referring to J. J. Abrams, the “Force Awakens” director, and Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president.

I love you for this.
Only watched 15 minutes and I find it really interesting how Charlie is really trying to get George to boast about himself. But George is being very humble in my eyes. Love it.
I think George is humble because first he knows what's like to have a film fail as well as succeed And two, George understands that Star Wars was a few bad edits short of being a bad movie. His editing team saved the original Star Wars, which everyone was admitted was a mess in its initial cut . Without those proper edits to A New Hope, we may never have had Episodes 5 and 6.
Turtle Island LAC The music and the voice actor changes for C3PO also played a big factor in saving it from it initial edit.
everyone hates on lucas cause their jealous...they as adults hate on kids newer films complain about the same issues the original films had like selling toys they ignored and forget cgi didn't exist back in the day and that prequels are always about set up not execution...for a 10 year old the 2nd and 3rd prequels and moments in the first film are amazing and their star wars and made him way more money ...so....people can just suck it sorry he didn't give you what you wanted or would write..he did what he wanted...as the creator he can..do I wish he let the guy who directed empire help direct movies 1 and 2 sure but what can you do
do you understand the job of the interviewer?
Anonymous 2000 you’re an idiot. It’s well known that a new hope was a complete mess before the editing team saved it
George Lucas is a very humble man. I love it. We need more people like him.
More humble than your average person aspiring to become a director.
True. We can always BE more like him. Cheers 👍
Not many people like him left in the US unfortunately TBH…
"what do you want the first line of your obituary to say?"
"I was a great dad"
*applauds silently*
yeah that was powerful
Speechless. For 9 minutes, Charlie Rose blows smoke up his @$$, and his humble response to that question was SO incredibly telling about keeping his priorities straight.
A great dad would have kept his daughter's weight in check, it's not like he couldn't afford the best dietists. Would have also made sure his second and third kids have a mother, rather than adopting and raising them by himself.
Mario Gómez Wow. I seriously can't believe how someone could become such an arrogant piece of shit.
I've just pointed out the truth. Have you seen his kids? Letting one of your daughters get well over 200 lbs is bad parenting 101, specially when you've got unlimited money and you've supposedly retired to take care of your children. Regarding Amanda, her career choice was... pro fighting, getting arms like those of a truck driver in the process. Say what you want about "chasing your dreams", but that reeks of daddy issues. And yes, adoption as a single parent is a selfish decision, one incidentally taken by many billionaires who think no one's good enough to raise children alongside them.
So yeah, "I want to be remembered as a great dad" is a great answer in an interview, but he being one in the real world? Not very likely, really.
Amazing how we sit here in 2019 and realize that he was 100% correct.
Right?

Agreed right. I would have said something similar.
Charlie Rose is obnoxious. Disney gave Lucas 4 billion reasons to walk away from Star wars. Now, he can make whatever movies he wants , no commercial or critical pressures altering his masterpieces. Pander free. Just movie. That's probably why Lucas decided to sell the Star wars franchise. That, and making a big picture like Star wars costs big money. Big money= big pressure. This is the most disrespected man in movie history. And the worst thing is that he wasn't only disrespected by critics and other media, he was disrespected massively by his own fans. I hope he knows that there are still a lot of people who love him for pouring his heart and soul into the movies we watched growing up and that we respect him for being who he is.
@@BeardLAD You’re seeing things that aren’t there my friend. Almost everybody doesn’t realize that it wasn’t just all the extra scenes and cgi added in the special editions, but also all the effects that have aged so well actually weren’t like that originally. Everything got massively enhanced and upscaled to look much better, but nobody ever talks about those changes because they assumed it was always like that since you were less cynical as a kid and didn’t notice all the flaws. Lucas actually did release the original editions on DVD once but with all the weird outdated effects. The truth is every single version of the Star Wars movies that have ever existed are available to watch. So what you actually want is a version that doesn’t exist, a version that has none of the changes Lucas made except for the ones you didn’t even know were changes. Lucas is the arbiter of Star Wars. It’s his life, his passion, his story. He has the right to change his movies however he wants. And before you pretend this is about preserving film history or whatever, this is something big directors do all the time with DVD releases. People just notice it with Star Wars because they’re fanatic about it. Also, Lucas made just as many changes with the prequels but you probably don’t even know or care since you don’t like those movies of course. So this isn’t about Lucas making the original versions unavailable, nor is it about preserving film history. So what is this really about? I think this is about you wanting to recapture a certain nostalgic feeling you got when you saw the movies as a kid, but you never once considered that this was also about George Lucas and the vision that he wants to tell. So when the films aren’t exactly identical to the ones from your childhood, you think something is wrong and even try to make believe that he tainted the originals somehow. But in reality, all the wonder and imagination from the originals are still there in the prequels in spades and the originals were merely improved to age better with time. You’re just not as open minded as when you were a kid. Nothing could’ve ever met your impossibly high expectations of rekindling the magic of your childhood. And of course millions of people have shared this same lapse in logic about Lucas as you, and a disgusting cottage industry has arose on the internet in the last 20 years dedicated to demonizing George Lucas simply for making movies you didn’t like, which led to him ultimately selling the movies to Disney and more or less retiring from filmmaking. And look what we got: creatively bankrupt, hodgepodge, cookie cutter at best, soulless, counterfeits of films, mass produced by a committee that studies analytics to decide what’s the most ‘accessible for general audiences’ so that they can make enough money. So much better right? So much better than the prequels which were oozing with creativity and beautifully impeccable landscapes of planets they go to in each movie, with all the same rich, timeless themes about fathers and sons, the struggle between the temptation and balance of the soul, the duloagy of life, and there always being another side to the story (the prequels of course being the ultimate other side to the story), that were present in the originals. Lucas never changed, you did. (Forgive me if I made any assumptions about your opinions on Star Wars but this comment wasn’t necessarily aimed at you specifically but at the entire culture of people who disrespect George Lucas in spite of him making some of the best movies of all time).
@@BeardLAD like? Oh u miss old Anakin at the end of rotj? Or maybe you like less stormtroopers? Is the movie that much better in poor quality video and with 10 seconds less of xwings?
He's like Walt Disney. He's a brilliant story teller and a once in a generation mind for big picture and scene by scene understanding. But he's a terrible director and and even worse writer. Phantom Menace is, without doubt, the worst of all of the Star Wars movies. Its possibly one of the worst movies ever made, and Lucas wrote and directed it. Carrie Fisher said that Lucas couldn't give direction.
@emario No. Being a good story teller makes you a good producer. It has nothing to do with directing or writing. Empire Strikes Back is, universally, agreed to be the best Star Wars Film, was neither written nor directed by Lucas. He created the story and was in charge of the overall focus of the film. Thats what a producer does.
@emario Yes. Im sure. Jar Jar is the worst character ever created. And Jake Lloyd is the worst actor who has ever been cast in a Star Wars film. The political struggle between the Trade Federation and the Naboo is the best part of the entire movie. And as for which movies make sense... none of them do. It would be impossible for 30 star fighters to destroy the Death Star in IV. I will admit the the plot to the sequels is strange, but there aren't any character or actors that just make you want to heave.

Charlie Henderson pretty sure he made a lot off Star Wars and look at how he’s dressed. I doubt he blew all his money
He has stayed true to what HIS vision of filmmaking is. Studios don't like that, they never have. They only care about the money, NOT the art form. The people who run the studios have no friggin clue about what it means to be a visionary or an artist. I love that he blazes his own trail and sees that in order to get the films he wants made he has to do it on his own. Very intelligent man. He doesn't spew BS like so many others in the business of filmmaking do incessantly. Just the fact that he doesn't give a shit about awards speaks to that.
you need to balance the force of movie making, if you lean too much into one you neglect the other, neither will be successful. the art is the entertainment, and the entertainment is profitable. if you make a movie solely to make money, most people can see through the bullshit and eventually your movies wont make any money, but if you make a movie solely to be artsy, people can sniff out the pretentiousness and walk away the same.

Yeah, i don't like how people misrepresent the quote when talking about the prequels.
The effects in the prequels enhance the story, as did the practical effects in the OT.
Thanks Orlando you're absolutely right. The prequels did in fact make star wars better but the real reason that all the visual effects in all the star wars movies worked is because George Lucas wrote a solid and interesting plot behind it sprung from his mind. And it's really sad to see all these mean small-minded, uncreative, rude and deceitful people who work for Disney trash George Lucas and turn his creation into garbage just for the sake of money and 'modern audiences '. When the last Jedi came out everyone said shut up and like this garbage. That’s what he did with the prequels did though
Yes I agree with everything that you just quoted but why isn't anyone calling him a hypocrite?
After seeing what Disney did the sequels, I can 100% understand where Lucas is coming from. Star Wars thrived because Lucas went against all the Hollywood culture. He didn't care about the money, the corporations, the pointless red tape, the bureaucracy. Lucas just wanted to make a good movie born form nothing but pure imagination that would touch the hearts of audiences everywhere and he succeeded.
But everything Disney did was the exact opposite of Lucas. They are a soulless cooperation who were bureaucratic to the core. They didn't care about the story, the character, the legacy, the plan, they just cared about the money and their movies are everything Lucas's Star Wars were not. Even those who criticize the prequels can at least admit they had more heart that all the sequels combined.
Man, I feel so bad for George. Star Wars was his baby and the ruined it just to make a quick buck. If I hated the Sequels as much as I did, I can only image how Lucas feels about it.
yeah I'm really disappointed George sold Star Wars to disney. Disney seems like everything he's against.
Same thing happens to RWBY except the creator died.
@@LummyTum It was kind of a forced decision from his part, I think. As he said in the interview, Lucasfilm had at least 2000 employees. And Disney was a mammoth, it bought other companies, they had a lot of money and influence. Also, Disney had a Star Wars theme park. And Bob Iger was the CEO. The guy who helped Lucas with the Young Indiana Jones series in the '90s. He trusted him as he trusted Kathleen Kennedy who he knew since the '80s. Lucas was always true to himself and honest. I actually agree with George Lucas here. When he talks about award shows being about being shows and less about the actual artists that win the awards. I think this is why a lot of artists stopped going entirely. These shows just put these events together not to actually celebrate art, but to get views and pump out the most expensive long commercials every 5 minutes. I felt the host was quite rude a number of times telling George Lucas how he should perceive shows and himself, based on wealth and awards. A lot less conversions about his artistic and story telling side, which I'm far more interested in then conversions about gloat. It seems George doesn't really like talking about that either. He's a real artist.
T-Bone I think Charlie Rose was giving Lucas "awards" and "wealth" as a FOIL so Lucas could rebut and express his actual opinions and emotions. Charlie's tone is that of an advocate, a psychologist/friend who goes, "people *say* you are all about the Star Wars toys, wealth, and accolades--but who is the *real* you?" And then creates a safe space to respond. Charlie Rose is (was) a brilliant interviewer, perhaps the best. Also, from personal experience, I can say he was a really nice guy and great listener even with a total stranger like me who isn't famous yet!
@@alexlippard2360 Yes. Yes I totally agree with this. I think that Rose is the best interviewer in the US for the past 40 years.
It reminds me of Ed Bradley asking Bob Dylan how he felt about having Rolling Stone's "best song of all time," and he just scowled and said, well they change that every week. He didn't even show up for the Nobel Prize. I think when you're at the stratospheric level of Lucas or Dylan, and you see how your work permeates the cultural world, awards _would_ seem silly. Awards are important when they help small and middle level artists immensely, giving them exposure and an audience. If you not only have the biggest audience already, but you've literally changed the culture - nothing is greater than that. No form of recognition. You don't want to offend the awards people paying court to you, especially because you don't actually think you're above them, and thay means you can't be honest and say their praise is an inferior form of recognition and mostly uncomfortable and tedious. It's a hard one to feel sympathy for because it's a bit unimaginable, but I can at least understand it.
Thank you for saying this.
That’s what awards are, in my experience. Great big circlejerks. Very rarely about the honors. Mostly about the ceremony.
Star Wars without George Lucas is like Lord of the Rings without Tolkien imput and Harry potter without J.K. Rowling. You can't be in one's creative writer's mind.
more like LotR without Peter JAckson and Harry Potter without Christopher Columbus
WartimeConsigliere You've got a point. Adaptations are different than original work though.
Tolkien spent almost half a century creating an entire mythology by himself. "Star Wars" required the input of George Lucas, yes, but also of lots of creative minds, like Ralph McQuarrie, Gilbert Taylor, Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew, Irving Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, the actors and actresses, John Williams, etc., etc., etc. Lucas couldn't be any further from Tolkien.
mcquarrie only visualized Lucas's ideas. Lucas played a very important role. To say that Lucas didn't while Tolkien did is bs.Nearly every writer is influenced by others and gains input from them.
WartimeConsigliere I agree with you there regarding Chris Columbus. Watching the first two films, it was like the books actually came to life.
I could listen to George talk like this for hours.

At the very end unfortunately.
George Lucas is a incredibly brilliant man. I think in some ways he's just a regular guy who enjoys being a father, auto enthusiast, mechanic, an affinity for 1950's and 60's Americana.
That's where American Graffiti was inspired from. Absolutely loved that film!
The other side is this creative visionary genius that captured the world's attention and made us all look up at the stars at night and think about a galaxy from a long time ago and far far away. Thank you George Lucas for sharing your imagination and brilliance with the world. I was 7 years old when Star Wars came out and I've been a fan ever since. The world you created captured the hearts and minds of billions of people. You have done exceptionally well!
D J Tanner ....well said. I treasured the musical score. I was maybe 10 years old. My family was very poor. To have the record was amazing to me! I later went on to become a DJ. I am an admirer of George Lucas.
George Lucas is an ass he won't even release the original star wars trilogy on blu ray and he fucked up indiana jones with the crystal skull movie. I can't wait until he dies because they might release the original theatrical versions of the movies.
your a dipshit George lucas wouldn't even have come up with star wars if it wasn't for Gary Kurtz and after their falling out after empire strikes back star wars has been going down hill since.
george lucas had a lot of help from Gary Kurtz in American Graffiti too. I'm not saying he is a bad guy but u dont go and change ur fucking movies 10 to 15 years after u make them and then say they r the true movies. Now when my kids watch star wars they have the see all the bad shit in the original movies and trust me they can notice the shit in the movies and their only 7. I can't wait to see if disney will release the originals because they just bought fox which has the rights to them. PS I think disney is going to fuck them up too. Revenge of the jedi would have been a way better movie but george fucked it up to make more money on toys. by the way if u dont know what revenge of the jedi is it is return of the jedi just a changed story and the reason for their falling out. Harrison ford wasn't even happy about the changes that were made because he was supposed to die in revenge of the jedi.
...and, among others, Akira Kurosawa - He and his work succeeded despite him.
There would be no Star Wars without this man, simple as that.
at the current rate there is no longer Star Wars. Just some giant company printing Star Wars themed garbage.
@julian marx wrong. Episode 1,2, and 3 tell the story of how the empire came to be and why the Jedi went nearly extinct. Add the clone wars series to fill the gap between episode 2 and 3 and it all makes sense. Watching the original trilogy on their own makes no sense, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions like how did palpatine gain so much power, how did the Jedi go extinct, where did stormtroopers come from? I love both prequels and original trilogy. Don't delude yourself you clown.

Couldn't agree more. He's a wonderful bloke.
I always understood him. He's a great writer, an amazing innovator who has propelled what they can do in movies further than anybody else. He's just a mediocre director. Star Wars - A New Hope was ...an ok scifi flick that hasn't aged very well. THEN... we have Empire and Jedi that were amazing, and that have aged almost flawlessly. Lucas didn't direct them. Then came the prequels, which he did direct, and we're back to mediocre again. Just goes to show...
"So why go through all that and get bad reviews, get all those crazy people yelling and screaming, why not just make the movie for yourself and your friends?"
My2Cents His Only flaw is writing unrealistic and terrible dialogue sometimes. Even the OT is riddled with bad lines, but the prequels aren’t bad.

I don't think it makes sense to say that technology is art on all levels. Sometimes it is created to resolve an artistic problem and and most of the times it is created to resolve a non-artistic problem. Either way, a problem exists and then the technology to resolve the issue is then developed.

It's obvious from what Lucas chooses to discuss that he has far more interest in ideas, art, elements of the human condition, than he does in himself. He strikes me as a man full of creativity, wonder, and curiosity. His films reflect that. Sadly there seem to be far fewer of the qualities present in the people who have come to claim ownership over the Star Wars name, and perhaps their art reflects that, too.
Closest to that is filoni. Sadly i can see Disney as a company intervene in the directors creativity and story telling. Disney is a company that limits what they put out. Hence why creative artist who made shows like the owl house decided to quit working for their company

Just look what what kind of media sells the most. For example, console games are the biggest seller of video games, which are generally dumbed down and casualized to painful levels to someone who is use to more complex, or at least slightly challenging kinds of video games.
Movies, (or even news) a lot of them are so cliche and dumbed down and over simplified portrayals that they break from a consistent representation of society . People think everyone who is muslim might want to kill them if they're at an airport, they think every pedophile is a serial killer than wants to kill their children, and is a white old male. They think everyone on the internet is trying to kill you , but if you meet them in person, they're somehow more or less safe than if you meet them on the internet, as if its a separate set of human beings from a parallel universe.
Humanity by and large is stupid, under applies themselves, and is shortsighted. Even the smarter ones often fall short and dont use their noggin as much as they could.
Humanity is dumb, but compared to what? It's not like anything else on this rock is smarter.
Compared to be smart enough not to make so many mistakes.
There is a scale of potential of intelligence. Overall, humanity has a lot of room for improvement.

He is creative and experimental, clearly intelligent and understands that there is a level of popcorn, bullshit, manipulation and control in the industry he wants to work in (film and storytelling) so what he essentially did was play them to the point where he was wealthy and successful enough to then say - f**k it - I'll do what I want now. And don't forget - government and corporations run the media ultimately and don't like free thinkers at all (read John Lennon's back story and the efforts set against him by those running America towards destroying his character and deportation). It’s really fascinating to me that in the early 70’s George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Brian de Palma, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese were all buddies and hung around w/ each other and look what each of them became. Someone needs to write a book about how this crew hung around together in the 70’s before any of them were big time and each of them made an enormous impact in the movie business. There’s no question that is a reason why they all became so successful. They were all trying to one up each other on each movie they made. Someone write that book. How’d they all meet? Where’d they hang out together? What’d they think of each other? Who’s the smartest? Who’s the most gifted? I’d read that book if someone wants to go write that.
There is a book titled: George Lucas: A Life by Brian Jay Jones. Though it's about him, it also talks about the things you mentioned. I've read it recently, it was interesting.

@@starlighter93 His biography of Jim Henson is fucking incredible!
Interesting to note: one of the reasons people think they’re so successful has do to with that competitive-ness you mentioned. They weren’t competitive with each other at all, really. They never thought, “If I’m to succeed, you must fail.” That line of thinking is what a lot of filmmakers today think, and it’s the death of collaboration. These men went to school together and worked together immediately afterwards. Their competitive drive stems from an idea of, “oh well, you made The Godfather, can you make Jaws? How about Mean Streets? Pretty good, but can you make Star Wars? Move over, I’m gonna make Indiana Jones.” They we’re driving each other. Like the Beatles or something.

@Richard Sutton Give it about 3-4 more movies and I can almost prove it will be dead.
Disney has this problem of unoriginality.
Take Rapunzel for example. The story would NEVER have been greenlit if it was an original work. But because it was a successful storybook, they took it.
This is what every Disney princess story is based on, and sometimes their retelling is pretty sick. Like Pocahontas, who was barely 10-12 in the history books. HISTORY BOOKS.
They are known for taking public domain works and copywriting them instead of coming up with their own stories.
Ex-fucking-actly
@Richard Sutton Marvel down to it's original core is falling apart with story releases like "the new mutants" and the other name of some comic that's so forgettable I can't remember the name of it, featuring "new heroes" with aliases like "snowflake, and safespace" and when fans realized this wasn't ironic they were furious, no one wanted this. Then the writers and executives at Marvel comics started antagonizing fans, and their fan base. Their customers. Comic book stores are closing, and no one is buying the new marvel issues. As well Brie Larson, the actor for Captain Marvel, is now going to spearhead the entire team of the Avengers. Brie herself isn't well liked because of her antagonization of audience goers, mostly men, who *Statistically* buy more movie tickets to see these movies. So she bashes the fan base who supports and puts her in this universe. I mean besides that we have other heroes like Black Panther or Thor that could continue to lead the Avengers. People don't want some "woke person" to tell them how horrible they are for the fact that they simply exist. Don't bite the head that feeds you. Disney with the track that it's currently going in, is going to figure out real soon by already running Star Wars into the ground with even most of its cast hating the movies they acted in. Marvel is currently on the same track, and if Disney doesn't realize what it is they're doing then they're going to suffer.
George Lucas is a intelligent man. He's the kind of guy you'd want to talk to for hours about history and human psychology. Never knew he'd be that kind of guy. I have a bigger appreciation for his work now.
Same!
Read his interview in James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction Book. It's fascinating.
But why is Charlie Rose interviewing Dexter Jettster instead of George Lucas?
First five seconds and Charlie rose already fucked up
Man I love George Lucas. The main thing you should take away from this is that Lucas "had a story to tell" and that's what Star Wars was all about to him. All the world building, cinematography, innovations, and everything, even the mistakes, came as a result of his own passion around the original idea of Star Wars and the main story. People speculate a lot on how Star Wars has changed since it was bought by Disney, but I seriously believe this is the root of all those changes. Disney is not propelled by a enthusiastic need to tell a story as Lucas was, it is all about money and box office numbers now unfortunately.
thats the fall of many long running movies books games series...they don't have any more good stories to tell..all that other stuff from hype to this little thing and that little detail is fine for the surface level wow factor but what makes media last is the story itself which draws everyone in not like say what a character wears or the name of a thing.....characters matter coolness matters plot matters but story usually means more than plot it means themes that can last generations be passed on ideals ideas messages morality that is the heart of storytelling...it isn't just things happening it can teach inform and inspire...now tell me what the hell were the disney films about?..besides action to sell merch and protect the main characters and kill off fan favorites for reactions and to advertise for hype? ...exactly..fuck off new star was your not welcomed here...if lucas killed off han luke and leia it would of been special...we would of cried learned something about ourselves and been taught some lessons and we would of been team new characters ..they wouldn't just die because we need them to be gone to sell the new people..thats so lame
Not to sound callous or anything, but Lucas knew damn well who he sold his company to. Did he honestly believe that his baby would remain the innovating force that he brought it up as? No. Nor were the new bosses obligated to keep things as is. LucasFilm eventually became a cog in the money-printing machine calling itself Disney.
@@fhb3 your right... maybe if he just gave it straight up to some innovative film maker like ... who... oh how about fox... then when fox sold to disney fox would have given them star wars for a bit more money, would that make you happy? would it? atleast this way has a huge amount of disney stocks and has a actual say in star wars legally as well as other disney film projects and can continue to make other projects pretty good with friendly advice... you remember something called the marvel films.... notice how they were all pretty good... and how most of them came out with lucas aboard disney as a shareholder.... and how bob and goerge both seem to like each other and get along and do things together? and how bob and george even seem to have a respectful embrace of each other's existance in each others lives
I should thank you for this comment. I first read this a month ago, and it motivated me to start working on my own fictional story that I've had stuck in my head for about two years. Seriously, those words "had a story to tell" kinda sunk in for a bit. It was like a revelation for me. I'm just like, "Wait, so if I've had this story idea in my head all this time, all I have to do is just... tell it?" I mean, I don't know how to make movies, but I know how to badly write a story. But after reading this, I spent the whole month creating my own world and it's characters and setting the rules and logic within the universe. It's been difficult and had a lot of changes made, but it's been fun. I'm just a little worried about the storytelling aspect. But it can't be any worse than the Star Wars sequels, can it? Well, maybe it can, because I still think I suck at writing, not that it's gonna stop me because I wanna do it.
@@Indurok writing is all about subtlety and not subtlety, just world build for now and do the rest as you learn it if you like, world building is fun and theirs a lot of games and things that support the concept of world building, many hobbies even encourage you to build your own worlds and armies and fictional histories, soo you just have to look for ways to express your joys and passions, and as you continue to read and learn and practice writing on the basics of world building, you will invariably find ways to write a more subtle story using your world as it is and how you reflect on your world with the story will determine a lot of its ability to communicate with people its popularity could rise or fall purely depending on random occurrences in the story itself
Say what you will about the prequels... but George is spot on. Copy and paste anyone? Abrams and Disney played it safe. Instead of "telling the story" they aimed exclusively at fans and their nostalgia of the originals. Even to the point of recreating the trench scene. Still loved the movie, but as a fan wanting the story to continue, there were too many cheap or "familiar" shots, specifically designed to replicate the originals. With roughly 30 years in the making... I completely agree with George, it was too retro. In an attempt to recreate everything that made Star Wars great, Disney lost their way and ultimately forgot about the story.
+Flynn's Video Arcade Despite what people say Episode 1 did get a new generation into Star Wars. I doubt the rehash thats episode 7 will bring in many new young fans.
I'm honestly looking forward to the new trilogy. Undoubtedly, there will be a new fan base, Disney made sure of that. That's all well and good, but I would still expect it to be more of what Star Wars is and not what it was. At a certain point it felt almost as if it was meant to be a reboot of sorts. Which seemed, shall I say... "disturbing". ;)
+ALitleBitSpecial I honestly doubt that Episode 1 got a new generation into Star Wars. I watched a lot of stuff when I was kid and bought all the merchandise for it too. But not all of it "stuck" when I grew up. For example old and new Doctor Who just looks like schlock to me these days. But Star Wars stayed, and I think it was because of the strength of the character writing. Something which is not there in the prequels.
+Angel Marley Awww... did someone huyt yu wittle feewings? I must be a horrible person for having a different opinion than you. Your comment speaks volumes of your intellect. Just because you may not like the story line, acting or over use of cgi in the prequels, at least George stuck to the story. They certainly weren't a cash grab or a blatant attempt to reproduce everything that predated them moron.
+Kimon Matara Hey don't knock DW man... ain't no coming back from that 😉
You can tell George is grieving inside about Star Wars
I think hes just disappointed. He was an artist taking risks. They are a corp reskinning the first 3 to play it safe. They didnt destory the legacy, just retarded the brand.
Same, I know everyone can have whatever thoughts on the Prequel Trilogy, but this man has a pure love and passion for that expanded story, and he knew where he wanted to lean it and go, and I respect him enormously for it
And this interview was made before the new triology, imagine how he feels now after the disaster disney made with his creation.
No he really does sound sad in this video...
that's ridiculous.
Been watching a lot of criticism about George Lucas this week online. I have now watched this and realised... it's all negativity. This man is a great man and a genius and the people that criticise him are not worthy and will never achieve even a minute portion of what George Lucas has... and he has done it with kindness and dignity. Very impressed.
yeah it's cultural marxism, they are trying to demonize George to discard him and rewrite the meaning of the franchise to their own ends. A modern day book burning. Pretty consistent for the this new generation of Nazis.
What this man has made in 77', 80' and 83' is the mindboggling. Truly a man ahead of it's time. The practical effects...dang. I only wish this man would have crossed some other man's paths.
Imagine what we could have had in a new Film Saga.
George's Writing, Tom's Savini's Practical Special Effects, Steven Spielberg's as a director....
A set of NEW actors...All of this shot with "back in the day equipment".
Make this happen y'all.
Charlie Rose is a terrible interviewer. It is so frustrating when he keeps interjecting with what he thinks is the correct answer. Just let the man speak ffs.
Then you let your emotions blind you to what he was actually trying to do.
Exactly my thoughts, too much leading of the witness happening here.
Actually you just have been introduced to how a Jewish person talks in private most of the time.
@@galapagoensis Lol I even think he tried toning it down a bit there too
smart people like George should be interviewed only by their peers. In this case by another director who actually knows what he is talking about, and so can follow the thread.
People who bash Lucas are dummies. If it wasnt for him their would be no Star Wars, their would be no ILM, no Pixar. He changed the game and i respect the crap out of him.
+Mike Telford amen to that bro. this new generation reminds me of that movie Idiocracy, everybodys getting dumbed down lol
+Francisco Navarro He still made bad movies. I don't hate on him, but he made bad movies!
+Ross Pit: shark hunter
Star Wars was also a bad movie. The themes were amazing, and they stayed the same and only strengthened in the prequels. Films as films on a technical aspect alone, they were kiddy soap opera films. Simple. He made bad films?..... If you are referring to the prequels, then you should count the classic trilogy as well. Especially Return of the Jedi, aka, SW: The Teddy Bear Special.
+latestHD
Did you see the interview? Once again he revealed that he was basically "holding their hand" through episode 5 and 6. Are people still so thick they don't get it? And ROTJ was as I already mentioned, the Teddy Bear march against Storm Troopers. Seriously, Jar Jar is were the line was crossed???? Fucking teddy bears man, fucking teddy bears.
Prequels were badly shot? We get an entire fucking sequence with Leia and the taming of a fucking teddy bear eating biscuits! o.O
DCF - HazardReborn Keep in mind, Ewoks are COLD BLOODED KILLERS!
George doesn't deserve the hate he gets. First and foremost the prequels were great stories and great successes as well. Second, he created Star Wars, one of the greatest stories/universes in world history, how many works of fiction had the same impact as Star Wars? And he directed American Graffiti as well and gave us immense technological advancements in film. I mean seriously what do you have to hate?
TheAmericanCynicPartyChannel
Da 4ce iz wit George Lucas. He iz a billionaire!
Try Nikola Tesla, on 4 size.
This shed a lot of light on many of the things I've wondered. He also seems like a good guy on a personal level too.
Cynic, Your 2nd & 3rd should be way above your 1st & foremost, "great stories" is pretty debatable.
The prequels were trash.
Your mom is trash. OHHHH
There you have it. This is why the current Disney "Star Wars" is a mess. George Lucas said it himself. You tell a story, using tools to help you. You don't use tools to tell a story. This is what is missing from "The Last Jedi." There is no story. The whole movie is about space battles. That isn't what the TRUE Star Wars is about.
And the space battles in TLJ were bad too, with characters behaving like idiots (Gen. Hux, the pink-haired lady). Not even the space battles were good! :(
They are tools who use tools to "create" a mess. There is no HEART. No SOUL, Just sjw agendas, and selling of toys like Ryan Johnson said... and this ungrateful hateful Kathleen Kennedy. RIP STAR WARS
Well, they have a story: nobody girl becomes a Jedi Knight. Unfortunately, not a lot of conflict comes from that because there never has been a bar against female Jedis, as George has always created an equanimous fantasy world. Also, they kind of forgot to actually tell the story and instead just handed her a lightsaber and said, "now you're a Jedi." The basic elements of drama and the essential conflict are shortchanged or are abandoned altogether for the sake of style and nostalgia. Corporate $$$$$$$$$ grabbing at its finest! It's not impossible for large corporations to make good art, but it almost is.
@@NolalanD Jedi Knight? With no Jedi Academy or Jedi Council? In the words of Mace Windu:

ya nailed it
People love to bash Lucas. But I still really like the guy. And i feel like after tfw, people will miss him. ...especially as star wars movies pop up every year, for the rest of forever, always...
Star Wars fans have a lot to thank Lucas for. Not only did he create the serious, he created the fervour that exists around it, by not prostituting the franchise the way Disney now seem to be intent on doing.
+Fergus O'Reilly "series"
+Fergus O'Reilly The edit option is on the top right of the comment box (once you've posted it ;-) the little triangle inside the circle lol ;-)
What? Why the hell should we be upset that they're making more Star Wars? We LIKE Star Wars, right?
+OSheaHandMade I never really enjoyed the prequels particularly TPM & AOTC.I preferred the originals, but I'm not gonna bag Lucas because without him there'd be no Star Wars universe.
TFA was so forgettable, you could tell George Lucas's imaginative influence wasn't there
I mean, I'd call the prequels unforgettable in a way, sure, but not for the right reasons.
***** It's pretty hard to forget their flaws with how glaring they are.
TFA only did the characters great. But new set pieces/designs and ORIGINAL planets, places and such, TFA absolutely did nothing and is an insulting rehash of the originals in that regard, the prequels did best with those categories...
Tom Whitley the prequels are fucking dope
What are talking about ?, I was great ;)
This guy is a terrible interviewer. I’m not sure how Lucas didn’t lose his temper with him.
I agree. He's fucking awful. The way he couldn't get it into his pompous head that George just isn't a guy who gives much time or merit to the whole 'awards' bullshit was particularly annoying.
i agree
Because he a true Jedi, hes in control over his emotions, or why the hell do you think he was able to eat all the nonsense hate from all these 40 year old babies crying on the internet about the prequels in the early 2000s?? Everyone would've went to the dark side immediately, not him!
He labels himself as a gentle giant, which is a great feature george is shown to have. He's very laid back and does not anger easily.
LOL imagine reffering to Charlie rose as "this guy is a terrible interviewer"
George has a lot to say and this guy can’t let him finish. It’s annoying, he’s a wise man and the interviewer doesn’t let him show that.
Charlie Rose did that to all his guests. The worst.
How the hell do you do an interview with George and not know he doesn’t have an academy award.
Yeah big L
He knew. Was just baiting him into a response. Charley Rose comes with a certain reputation as an interviewer, he's actually quite mild in this.
@@MonkeyspankO this dude is a horrible interviewer. She should just go interview politicians. That's a group of people that need to be pressed for answers.
Poor preparation by Charlie. It's also common knoedge and media is Charlie's full time job.
This interviewer is not getting the answers he wanted lol
Wow
It would be boring if he got only answers he expected. This is deeper than that.

Are you my long lost family member?
Jk, to your comment it's just like how Disney expects what they wanted but always back fires them XD
@@JordanWheeler1999 Not related afaik unless distantly.
No! No! No, George! You can't tell that! The sheep must believe the awards are the most important thing, you can't say they are just for shills to pat each other backs.
About the so called overuse of CGI in the prequels. At this time the use of CGI was a very revolutionary and interesting topic. So being able to do "new" stuff with "new" technology....of course he did that. It was exiting at the time.
+SoundbombSoldier Plus its not really less CGI in the new one....it just looks better and less CGI-ish.
+SoundbombSoldier I agree. The difference for the CGI in 1, 2 and 3, vs 7, is that in 1, 2 and 3 it's really obvious that it's CGI based (kinda sad to watch).... but in episode 7 the cgi is a lot "cleaner". It "disappears" into the story telling. It's not in your face like it was in 1, 2 and 3. Special effects (when used correctly) should blend seamlessly into a story. When it doesn't, it detracts from the movie experience.
35:23
+SoundbombSoldier The only problem I have with CGI is doing main characters with it.
+SoundbombSoldier It was also meant to show how glossy, progressive, clean, and futuresque the past was under the leadership of the Jedi. The harshness in the originals shows how much life sucked under the Sith.
Charlie Rose is terrible ... how does he still have a job. George is so much more patient than I could have been.
Chris Medeiros Lol that prick is gone now.
Why is everyone in here acting like a high strung SJW?
Lol who?
Charlie Rose is actually an excellent interviewer. I just think he wasn't prepared for George Lucas' cynicism and eccentric personality.
53:33 if you’re from tik tok

TFA was horrible, we need George back
Amen brother! Amen!
I challenge you to watch Mr.plinketts review of the Star Wars prequels and say with a str8 face you want Lucas back.
I didn't mind them. I say it with a straight face. I want Lucas back.
+Zer0dog most overrated director in the history of cinema
+Zer0dog it seems from what I've read and watched he was great in Star Wars because he had other talented minds around him to challenge him and tell him no, they didn't have all the special effects technology they did in the early 2000's so the relied on character development and sound story line.
Not so much in the prequels (which is probably the worst trilogy of all time), he became way to reliant on special effects and lightsaber fights. Something that he detests in this very interview. I'll be honest I've never seen American graffiti, but I'm not gonna call him an all time great director if he can only hang his hat on American graffiti and Star Wars (which in my opinion cancels itself out with the prequels)
George Lucas is a great and decent man.The fact the nostalgic fan boys who shat a brick over the prequels hate and chastise him and that documentary was made is bloody ridiculous.
Sebastian Fitzpatrick yes ik its our fault he left. stupid fanboys
Brother of E.N.D in many ways, yes. Society has lost much in the last 20 or so years and basic courtesy is one of them.
The prequels were bad movies, end of.
Yes, although the level of hate Lucas received was childish and ludicrous, he's a human being.
What he should have done was at least write the prequels years before making them. Rather than writing them a couple of months before shooting them. Preparation is key.
What's so special about George Lucas?
