My issue is none of these, and VLC player does not have the options I need. I use windows app "Movies and TV" as I can advance frame by frame and take a "photo" of the frame I want. I cannot do this with files on my 2T USB SSD, but if I copy the file to my hard drive - it works OK
I had the same issue, when I exported the video with the Canon Utility software and that worked. Oddly, two videos on each camera had this issue, and they were the same scenes of an interview that I did. I don't know how that happened. Two cameras, and 2 our of 8 same scenes but different angles on each camera were messed up. WTH!

You need to pay for it to save the video but the 30 second preview it had was enough to convince me it would work and it has worked!!!! I have recovered my video! Thanks guys, you are the best! I am actually already using VLC. When I first download the file, it works. I leave it in the folder, come back another day, it has this error. That makes no sense to me. I have tried updating codecs, everything, nothing works. Including the above. The problem didn't exist until last Wednesday (1 week ago) when Microsoft sent one of their confounded system updates and it has wrecked both my video downloads and photo (jpg) downloads which members of my family send me. Anything downloaded before last week works!

It is just that it works only the first time on the EDD. Switch off and come back, it no longer works (it did before the update last Wednesday). Make a backup copy of your video file, Change the file’s extension to .avi then open VLC and head to Tools > Preferences Under Input / Codecs, look for the Files section Under the Damaged or incomplete AVI file dropdown, choose Always Fix then Save the changes and close VLC. Try opening the video file with VLC and see if it plays normally. If that doesn't work you can try some video repair tools like Kernel Video Repair Tool, Stellar Video Repair and Online Video Repair.
I downloaded that VLC player and it didn't work. I mean... like, at all. I told it to open the file that the other app said had the wrong format (or something) and it just sat there. It didn't play. One of my files is corrupted beyond any method so far. It is a 1.29 MP4 video file (stored on an external hard drive) that played entire length,but then one day it started to only play the first .19 and I get Error code 0xc00d36c4. Wondershare Repairit did not work. It only (supposedly repaired) fixed the first .19 that was already working. Also, Automatic Updates does not show as an option in my Windows Media Player. All of my work (7 weeks) animation video is lost forever.
