Hey Everyone! LINKS are UPDATED* 😎❤ I'm so happy to hear the stories of how this video has saved some people's heartache over potentially losing important content. So far there have been comments about people reviving all kinds of videos whether it be personal home movies, weddings, funerals, or memorials. Even things like TV shows, client projects, and pilot episodes have been brought back using this method. Apparently, it works with other video file types outside of .mp4 as well. I do plan to make an updated version of this video in the coming months to make this process even simpler to digest. I appreciate all of the positive comments and LOVE to hear about those who are able to bring back their videos! *Much love to you all!*

Out of about 40 videos/photos I took with the GoPro Hero 9 during a vacation, one video file seems to be giving me an issue. I was able to view it 1 time after the initial recording & was able to see the thumbnail/time duration & playback directly on the camera; After that, It would only work using the GoPro app on my phone even though it showed 0:00. It now says "Unable To View" on the camera gallery & after attempting to download the file to a computer the file shows its 3.07 GB but it will not play anymore, not even on the app now. I tried the recovery method from this tutorial but no luck. Any other suggestions?
I'm not an expert, but it seems that your case is different, it sounds more like a broken SD card, I think this case is for files that were not properly saved at termination. Which means the beginning and middle of the video is ok, it is just the finishing that is not good, so it can read the entire file and cut the bad ending. In your case, it looks like the file got corrupted in other ways since it was working properly in the beginning, so I recommend you to not use that SD again or properly format it and check for errors. But about the file I honestly don't know how to help you, In the past I had corrupted files like that, that I was able to open them with VLC, but not other players, and they had skipped frames but VLC player was still able to read it. So I used to open with VLC and then use, if I'm not mistaken, save as, and make it a different format. Ex: If the file was AVI I would make, save as mpg2 and it would make a new file. But with the broken frames. Give it a try if you didn't do that yet. Try open with VLC player and see if it works at all there.

This video is a life saver. I lost 23 minutes of the start of an event I recorded. My battery suddenly just gave out (sony a6500). I quickly pulled out my backup camera and recorded the rest of the night. Then next day I check the SD card. Clips 1 through 14 were good but I was missing clip 15. I used a software called “Wondershare” and recovered the missing file. The resulting file was corrupt and would not play. I followed these instructions step by step and the resulting file was a perfect MOV with audio. Thank you so much!!!

*_"Only I couldn't change the directory, because C: is the only directory I have, since I only have one M.2 drive."_* - You need to be in the right directory. "Directory" just means "folder". "C:" is not a directory; that's a drive. Did you copy/paste the directory path from the Explorer window as shown? (Step 6)

My Command Prompt doesn't let me change my directory in C: which is where my bin is located. Do you have any tips on how to resolve this? I really need this thank you :))
I did a silly and turned off my xbox and unplugged the usb drive while forgetting I had a video recording, so I didn't stop it properly. I tried this, and while the audio is now a bit glitchy, the video is usable, thanks bro :D
I was extremely happy to see my mp4 actually give me a video, however was quickly a bit saddened to see my videos speed constantly fluctuate. It's constantly speeding up and slowing down, and the audio is completely broken too. I might still find a use for the footage as is but If anyone here knows how to fix this problem, please tell me. (I believe the source of the problem might be because I record in variable bitrate).
Pim I actually managed to get my mp4 fully recovered with all 3 audio streams by using the alternative paid method (in description). Sadly enough though it’s not really worth the price as I paid 20 dollars for about 20 minutes of footage.
I have the same problem :/ I tried several method and this is the only one that got me close. I tried VLC and the 'doubling the length, then use grauonline.de' method. VLC didn't even play the video while grauonline turned the 30min video in to 9 seconds with horrible audio. I pretty much given up hope. Wondershare's Video recovering worked flawlessly, at least the 30 second preview. I was tempted to buy it but I'm not a youtuber and have no intention of using the program actively so it felt like a expensive waste. Especially since the video isn't important and can be re-filmed if absolutely necessary. The video I'm trying to recover can do without sound, and the speed can be fixed in editing, so I don't mind. But there seem to be a visual glitch in replaying right at the middle which doomed the video. I decided to run it on VLC and hope to play the broken-but-less-so-video on a famously can-play-anything video player. And that helped a lot. The player didn't freeze up and played just fine, albeit sometimes fast forwarded and no audio for 60% of the video, all of which I'm willing to accept. I am desperate enough to recover something usable. Re-filming would more effort than I would like, but the content itself isn't worth paying some 30-50 bucks(depending on subscription length) for recovery.
Sweet video. By the way, Step 1 -- if you want to get the zip folder instead of the *.exe file, click the link below the green download button, it reads: "please click here to download the software without the installer." -- that way you get the zip file.
You Lost me at 6:34 can you or anyone else elaborate as to what you did there please? You said "this is in my A and then you populated an address in the search engine within your Bin folder and then when you went into Your cmd report you put an A: and hit enter and everything populated there. I'm confused as I don't know how to bring up the address in the bin search engine so when I go to the Cmd report and put A: and then enter nothing comes up. Please help someone if you can.
It works! Thank You and you save my video file! I have similar situation. When I recording a long video, my Sony camcorder screen flash battery empty for a few minutes already. I stopped the recording and the screen indicated stop and within 1 second I swapped the battery. I found out later that it can still write to the SD card for 5 to 6 seconds from the buffer after I stopped the recording. The 10.8GB could not play at any player. I followed the instructions carefully. Step 8 and 9 took me almost 1 hour each and not as fast as the video. After the 2 hours processing line by line, the Result video works and no loss in quality and the audio is great. I think this method is the best for MP4 video recovering. Those software cost $80 and may not even work according to many reviews.
This didnt work for me when i put in the last command. It said things like missing picture in access unit with size 56, no frame, could not find codec parameters for stream 0, format aac detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible, and more
Try to change it adding parameter --avcidrmax 2CE107 and/or --avcxmax E6619 they said this to me and the step after said what ou said ... no frame blabla .. only got a video like paranoma .. a photo each 2 min ... something like that

Stas Tatarin 1 week ago (edited) Hey guys, for those who can't find the "bin" directory, or can't find where to download FFmpeg: The legacy link from the guide description is outdated. You need to download FFmpeg version 3.4.1 for this guide to work as in the video. This version can be download from this page: www.videohelp.com/software/ffmpeg/old-versions Specifically, here are direct links for the appropriate packages: www.videohelp.com/download/ffmpeg-3.4.1-win32-static.zip www.videohelp.com/download/ffmpeg-3.4.1-win64-static.zip If you're not sure which version of Windows you have (64 or 32 bit), then download the win32 package, which should work regardless.
oh my god THANK YOU! it worked but i had to change the last command from this: ffmpeg.exe -r 30.000 -i result.h264 -i result.aac -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc -c:v copy -c:a copy result.mp4 to this: ffmpeg.exe -r 30.000 -i result.h264 -c:v copy result.mp4 it was a lucky guess but i thought id share in case anyone was having the same problem as me
Hmm thanks, i prefer the result from this one more. The recovery from the line the command prompt gave me is very stuttering when trying to skip through different parts. The audio is only there at the start unfortunately. The one you provided is much smoother, but lacks audio, however the less stuttery playback is preferred to a tiny bit of audio at the start.
The recover_mp4 downloads all refer to restore.media/en, which is a paid software. Can you please give a direct download via something convenient like dropbox? It would help a ton.
This was a big help for meee! I have filmed at least 20+ of video files back then and it was all corrupted because of bad SD card that I had before and then I just had to go on with life without recovering every single of it. Now I can totally prevent these unfortunate situations.
You Absolute legend!!!! I was recording a funeral for relatives who couldn't be there due to covid when the battery went flat and corrupted the file. THANK YOU SIR!!!!!
any suggestion on being only able to recover 26% of the original corrupted file? It doesn't look like you answer many questions here, but on a chance you may, I'll ask anyway. Super helpful so far with a little trouble in step 6 like a lot of people. The addition of cd (change destination) was not real clear in the video and this of course was key. Help me and I'll help you. I have a decently sized audience and us video creators need this kind of information as it is bound to happen sooner or later. Thank you for considering. I've even tried the newer downloads you have listed in the description and I still get the same result. The original file is about 2.5 hours and almost 4G, and I was able to recover about 1G and about 25 minutes some additional incentive, help me recover this and I'll give you $100 in your patreon account (time sensitive, I'm working on this with a 3rd party as well)
Was filming a youtube video about 3 months ago have the files on my computer still watched your video cant get the website to work for what ever reason. The site is the same one you showed but it looks much difftent than it did 4 years ago. Can you do an updated video on this same thing?
Step 8 creates a h264 file of about the same size (good progress)... And in the instruction the command gives me, I had to replace "corrupted file" with 'bad.mp4". Then step 9 gives me a huge list of mistakes and creates an mp4 file of 0Kb. I renamed the h264 file "result-repaired" and used the command "ffmpeg -i result-repaired.h264 -c copy result-repaired.mp4 " And it worked :)
When I try using the afterdawn link in the description that you gave as step 1, the recover_mp4 is downloading as a .exe file and not as a WinRAR file, what is going on?

Step 7 just keeps telling me in Command Prompt that "is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
What's the dealio? ? I followed every step, but to no avail. Only I couldn't change the directory, because C: is the only directory I have, since I only have one M.2 drive.
(Step 6)

If it's already in C:, there's no need to do the A; stuff he did in the video. just put "cd *insert folder location*" and you should be good.

@@knockknock8965 Mi screen recorder....it records system sound, mic sound .
謝謝你!!!我用這個方法救回了一台用SONY CX900錄完並不正確斷電造成檔案損壞的影片 A LOTS THANKS!
I have the same problem. The original file was over 3GB and now it's only 2GB
Pim I actually managed to get my mp4 fully recovered with all 3 audio streams by using the alternative paid method (in description). Sadly enough though it’s not really worth the price as I paid 20 dollars for about 20 minutes of footage.
I have the same problem :/
I tried several method and this is the only one that got me close.
Re-filming would more effort than I would like, but the content itself isn't worth paying some 30-50 bucks(depending on subscription length) for recovery.
ffmpeg didn't have a bin folder

Happy it worked for you!!! 🙌
This didnt work for me when i put in the last command. It said things like missing picture in access unit with size 56, no frame, could not find codec parameters for stream 0, format aac detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible, and more

Hey guys, for those who can't find the "bin" directory, or can't find where to download FFmpeg:
The legacy link from the guide description is outdated.
You need to download FFmpeg version 3.4.1 for this guide to work as in the video.
This version can be download from this page: www.videohelp.com/software/ffmpeg/old-versions
Specifically, here are direct links for the appropriate packages:
www.videohelp.com/download/ffmpeg-3.4.1-win32-static.zip
www.videohelp.com/download/ffmpeg-3.4.1-win64-static.zip
If you're not sure which version of Windows you have (64 or 32 bit), then download the win32 package, which should work regardless.
Hello my man, I would like have a question. Does it matter if the length or size is different?
oh my god THANK YOU! it worked but i had to change the last command from
this: ffmpeg.exe -r 30.000 -i result.h264 -i result.aac -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc -c:v copy -c:a copy result.mp4
to this: ffmpeg.exe -r 30.000 -i result.h264 -c:v copy result.mp4
it was a lucky guess but i thought id share in case anyone was having the same problem as me
thanks mate!
It works for me with your command. Thank you!

any suggestion on being only able to recover 26% of the original corrupted file? It doesn't look like you answer many questions here, but on a chance you may, I'll ask anyway.
