My humble contribution for this issue: I recently bought Korg M1 and wanted to reload the factory presets. I bought a cheap generic USB-Midi interface and watched this video carefully and followed all steps. Nothing happened. I tried with MIDIOX on PC and SysEx Librarian on Mac. I read all the forums over the internet regarding this and tried different buffer settings. That took considerable amount of time. The solution was to use quality midi interface and cables. I borrowed a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and a Klotz Midi cable, plugged it in to mac and all the SysEx files went in without any hassle, or tweaking with the buffers and stuff. Everything was done in 5 minutes. Probably it would also work with PC/MIDIOX, or any other quality midi interface. tl;dr - Do yourself a favour and go for good midi interface. Otherwise this video is an excellent tutorial of how to do the trick.
Seriously underrated piece of equipment. Not only do you get 200 sounds, which you can change out any time you like, you can record full multilayered tracks to this thing. Great for sketching ideas and making interesting soundscapes. After taking an unused one apart and restoring the patches I've found this thing to be a real gem.
Your a God send!! Ive been staring at my M1 for a year now, reluctant to go thru this process to restore my sounds, but you explain it so clearly! Thanks for posting this, I'll let you know how I do.
Your vids on the battery replace and patch were VERY helpful. I finally got all orig patch and combi restored. Two problems I had: 1) the cheap midi-USB (oval shaped) found on ebay for $6 were no good. They work for note transfer, but drop some data sometimes, so sysex transfer wont work. I got a better midi-USB and then could trnsfer some patches but not all, (the first 11 or 12 would be ok). 2) I increased midiox buf size to 16K, 100ms delay, and loaded it as 2files (prog & combi)
First, thanks for taking the time to make this video. It is appreciated.I was having the same issue that many folks are reporting - nothing happens when you send the file. After reading the post by Paavo below, it dawned on me that although my midi cables work, they are 15 and 20 feet long. All I had to do was grab a 3 foot cable and it worked fine. I did not have to tweak anything. I am using a Tascam US20x20, Win10, and a USB 3.0 port with MIDOX, and once I went with the shorter cable, It worked perfectly.
Thanks so much for this! Finally starting to understand MIDI and this was a great help! Important note to other users: Make sure your outputs are set up right in MIDI-OX (ie that your output is your midi box/soundcard/etc). I got stuck for a few minutes on this, but figured it out quickly enough
I cannot thank you enough for creating your videos. You have helped me restore my Korg M1! I lost the factory sounds years ago and could only use a Bo Tomlyn sound card to play it. Some of the factory sounds were on my first CD and I could not reproduce the same mix. Your instructions were very easy to follow for both the battery replacement and the patches restore. Great job! (My music is on Spotify, Jango and iTunes.) Thank You! R W Randall
Lo He logrado compañero!! GRACIAS a VOS!!! SAludos y exitos!!
What a great video. I picked up an m1 really cheap that needed a new battery. Changed that, followed this video and it's up and running! I've never used midi before (I'm a les paul into a marshall guy) so am really impressed. Thanks!
Glad everything worked out for you. I'm a guitar player myself and moved into midi by necessity many years ago. So I understand where you are coming from. You'll get used to it. Embrace it as a way to further progress in your playing and make it part of your writing process. When I was in a music group I started liking to make arrangements little parts at first then bigger part. I only wish I had midi in those days and we would have made a lot of great music. Sir, Thank you for thoroughly explaining how to do this. I was able to 'fix' both M1's we use in our school system after I replaced the internal batteries. One minor point: I needed to set the MIDI channel to "1" in the M1 to receive the data from MIDI-OX. Channel 9 that you used in your video didn't work and I couldn't figure out where to change the MIDI-OX channel. Where in MIDI-OX can I change that send channel?
I am glad everything worked out for you. I don't personally recommend using those cheap midi devices especially those on a single cable. As I have said before I have two midi boxes (midiman and Midisport) they are around $50 to $80 but get the work done. Especially know that I am working my way thru to the soft synth side of my DAW.
You can use the same program to transfer sounds to the Yamaha, but they must be Yamaha sounds made for that particular model synth. You can not use Korg sounds on a Yamaha keyboard. Each Synth is a little bit different the way they construct sounds internal. Hope this answers you question
Thank you very much for your response looked at your while i was doing every thing all over & i had made several mistakes i bought a cheap midi to usb cable from ebay & plugged it just like you said (In to Out & Out to In) but if i plug it like that it doesnt show up on Midi-ox, if i plug them In to In & Out to Out it shows up but it wont let me send the files to the keyboard i don't know if i don't have the keybord on the same midi channel as the midi ox
No pude abrir los archivos descargados (syx) me sale el siguiente cartel "No Output Device is Selected or there are no SysEx buffers. Only Manual Dump Supportes. Hint: Make sure "options/Pass SysEx" is Checked." Tendras algun concejo para esta situación!! gracias!!
I thank you so much for your kind words. Your email made my day. Especially now that I am under the weather sort of speak. This email boosted my spirits! Thank you! Please use it anywhere you like. As other problems pop up I'll be sure to document and video them. Thanks again for a very inspiring short email.
Bueno depende.
This video it was very helpfull. Thanks a lot. I live in Brasilia D.C, Brazil and have no customer suport for korg in my city. Thats is our reallity down here in Brazil. Thanks again!!!
I almost bought one back in 1989 for $3000 at the guitar center but being only 16-voice polyphony I backed off. But how much is the EX worth now? Thanks for the great instructional videos!
maybe u heard from many people this but thnx a bunch once again I did read n watch the video long time ago n wanted to do it with my KORG M1 as well got a the cables hook it up n KORG is woking many thnx for ur help
Busca este cable "USB to MIDI Cable ".
Gracias.
I saw your video and did not see anything wrong. You must check your settings in Midiox and verify that your midi box is transmitting correctly and that you have the cable plugged in right as well. Please let me know of any further progress.
thanks a lot sir. found one with a dead battery yesterday, but your videos got me up and running. i got my sounds from the korg uk website in one file. for some reason the combinations didn't work for me off the link you were using, but like i said everything seems to be good from that korg uk file. thanks again
Dear anievestor, thanks for your support! Unfortunately I still have problems with the soundstransfer. I don`t know where the problem is. Where can I see which MIDI-channel I have to take for the transfer? (I use MIDI-OX) I know that normally I have to stick one MIDI-cable into the keyboards MIDI-out and into the PCs MIDI-in. Now I use this instrument ( M-Audio MIDISport Uno ) I have sticked the USB-contact in the PC. On one MIDI-cable stands in and on the other out. How connect to KORG M1? THX!
OK First I think you are talking about the Korg M1. If so, it is very very easy. When you reach the Midi filtering hit the "G" key underneath the display then hit the up and down button on the left side of the display to toggle between the enable and disable. That's it!!! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Hopefully you have been patient with me. Hope everything works out well for you. Let me know how everything went.
Sorry for the delay responding I was out of the country. I use the following buffer settings. 256 bytes, Num 32. Now remember this has to do a lot with the midi interface you have. I have not had the need to change these settings, ever!, but I have a EMU Xmidid2x2 interface an it works very well with it. I previously had another midi interface a midiman 2x2 but it did not work well with Windows 7 64bit. Hope this helps. Thanks
Thank you very very much for your support! The sounds are back on the Korg M1. Only the sound`s names are missing from Nr. 50 up. But there`s another little problem. The sounds come only through the left headphone. I`ve tried it with several headphones and it`s the same when I use the two "Out"-Channels. Do you know what I can do? Thank you very much and greetings! (Y)
Thanks for the good info, this was very supportive. But just wondering if you have run into an M1REX (rack version with extended memory, no keyboard) like HyperSoraSky I'm not getting the 100 programs/combi's although using the patches you recommend from vintagesynth.com I'm getting more programs/combi's loaded (up to I73 and P83) only loading I53/P60 from other website providing "original patches" . Just wondering should those files be loaded in any particular order, and.. I had a buffer error originally with midiox that i fixed by increasing number of buffers within midiox,.....maybe increase buffer size....? Thanks again for the good info.
Without being at the synth I would say that your Korg is setup for 50 prog and 50 combis. Go to the global settings of the synth and check and see if it is setup for 50/50 or 100/100.
Most cables i have used in the past i bought from radio shack. They worked fine. Later i bpught better csbles from guitar center i little bit more money but they can be also found in amazon cheaper. Rule of thumb if you are tunning longer runs (8 feet or more) get bettet cables. They usually bettet shielded and better wiring. So if you really know that your midi interface works fine in your DAW then switching to better cables would be a logical approach especially if you have longer runs. Hope this help.
There has been a number of users that have had the same problem and 9 times out of 10 it is the cheap interface. Especially those you can buy off of eBay or made in some foreign countries. You are right and if you see the extended comment string I have talked about plenty times but it certainly wouldn't hurt to mention it again. If you have am interface that you own and know that it works use it or do what you did get one borrowed and test it. Thanks again
+anievestor do you think it could be done with only 1 midi cable ? i cant connect in and out at the same time but i could switch them during the process
+Captain Mike Meloni Well let think this one over. MidiOX will send the information from the computer to the keyboard. IF you have a good interface that interface will have both an in and an out! Having said that if you are trying to send the patch information to the M! or similar device, the OUT cable of your midi device should be connected to the IN port of the keyboard. So you are right to assume one cable is good enough for this exercise, BUT, if you are planning to swamp patches in your device from time to time you definitely need two cables. Taking them out and swamping them could at some point damage the port. Also if you are going to use it in a live performance setting them you definitely need both ports connected. I hope I answered your question. Let me know how it goes. Thanks
When I watch your video the Port Activity screen shows RT and SX lights flash when you download one of the synth files. Mine just has the SX light flashing, whether I'm trying to download anything or not. Also, should I be able to see the Korg M1 in some screen on the Midi-Ox, because I can't. Mark
Have you been able to successfully communicate with a sequencer and the keyboard? This can tell a lot. Go to your sequencer and try to lay down a part and then another part. If you can record and playback the parts then you midi cables are setup correctly. IF not then they are on backwards. Most of the time when you get a light stuck like that it is either the cables connected wrong or the cable or cables are bad. Check this out and let me know
You have to set the internal buffers and external buffers to certain values that I cannot remember it's a pain in the hole actually trying to get it to work .
I have Midiox 7.0.2.372 and for a while this program has always transmitted and received on all channels. In my case I used channel 9 (on my M1) for some reason I quite can't remember right now why I used it, but you can use it on any channel. Just make ssure your Midi filtering is set to receive System Exclusive data and take the protection off, set it to any channel and your done. Try it and let me know. Thanks
What I meant was go to your synth and press the global button located on the left side and cycle thru the menus until you get to the midi channel page and make sure it is the same as what you have in Midiox. That's it!
There were several releases other the years when the M1 came out. I only gave you one link to use but you can search on the internet and you will find a number of other files claiming to be the originals. They might well be. It all depends on the year your model came out. Down load them all and upload them until you find the one that you had before. Hope this helps. On the subject of the name not showing up you probably downloaded a file that was corrupted. Try downloading it again.
when i connect my midiusb to my pc-keyboard the red light comes on,but then the yellow and green would start flashing the whole time which i dont think is what its supposed to do .
Please help - I am trying to do this right now by I am getting a SysEx: No Buffers Available: there is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again. What do they mean? Memory on my computer, on the programme or the M1? How do I fix this? thanks!!
I haven't use a MAC so I can't tell you much. But those your MAC register the midiusb device as properly working? Try opening your sequencer and playing an old song and then try adding something new to that song. This exercise is to see if the device is working correctly. Let me know a bit more information after you do this experiment.
hello I have a korg wanted to consult m1 that lights but is labeled and discovered that if I disconnect one or two chips that go to the board of the keys no longer works is labeled everything but my question is that keys can be wrong
I used the files from the Korg website, I used the mid version, need to set the M1 for SYS=ENA and MIDI channel 1. My previous attempts almost worked but didn't show voice names, nor did the effects work.
When you say Mid version, do you mean midi version? If so, that is not going to work. The files I provided in the video are system exclusive files. Try it again and let me know. Sorry for the delay responding
Thanks, all sorted now. yes my first two attempts was using midiox and sending sysex files. I'm familair with midiox and sysex files so I was puzzled why it didn't work. As I know the process using a sequencer, I loaded the mid file in and sent it which seemed to work. I think what happened was, maybe I didn't have the correct settings somewhere and it was only up until I did the mid file did I get the magic sequence. Korg say, even for sysex dumps, needs midi channel on 1. BTW: I am using a M1R Once I got the factory settings restored using the mid file, I can now upload various program banks using midiox and sysex. Thanks for the help.
It should not matter they are the same but in rack format. Going back to the sysexec dump. You really don't need to set a channel for it. You can go Omni in both Midiox and the M1R and it should take it as well. Glad to got it resolved. Thanks Antonio
Hi A, indeed the rack and kbs should be the same, I just noticed one person made comment regarding the rack so I thought just to mention it and maybe put their mind at rest should they be having problems. I agree with you about midi channel not being important with the sysex dump, that is what I expected too, but when I read the instructions that came from Korg which is this -> "Note: Korg system exclusive is channel sensitive and therefore this preload data is saved using Midi channel 1. Please ensure you set the receiving M1 to Midi channel 1." - Actually as you say, Omni mode should encompass this. Best regards, TT
Seems as though I have everything hooked up properly but the sounds I upload are not the original.sounds.I am using the same source for the tones that you suggested. I'm not sure if I understood you properly with regard to the usb interface. I have a single usb connector from my computer ending at two midi plugs that I mounted to the keyboard as you suggested. But the sounds delivered are all wrong and I still only have piano on my combi mode. Help??
OK, lets work this slowly. I am going to assume several things and let me know if I am wrong. 1. You have the program portion of the M1 unprotected? 2. You are sending the entire file to the M1 thru midiox or equivalent? 3. The file you selected has the patches you want including combis? 4. Finally to can communicate with your M1 thru your interface? Test it with a DAW. Normally if it is configured properly your DAW will let you know. Get back to me and we can see what's going on.
I did change the batery in my KORG M1, and when I should load all the things from my card, the music wasen´t there.....? where can I find the original musicfiles for KORG M1....:-) senserly Jarleiceman
Hola Amigo..
Asegurate que diga Internal OFF no NO. Despues regresas a GLOBAL y el numero 6 y cambialo a Interna; ON.
Dear anievestor, I don`t know how it works with the video answers on youtube, but I have sent you a little video. First thank you very much for this helpful video. But I have troubles with the transmitting of the sounds. In my video I show the actuel settings of my KORG M1. Have a nice day! Greetings and best regards!
HELLO ,,I HAVE N PROBLEME WITH THE M1 AFTER DEAD BATTERY I HAVE ALSO THE PROGRAMS AND SOUNDS BUT VERRY VERRY WEAK ON THE BACKGROUND , ONLY ON MAX VOLUME I HEAR THE SOUNDS VERRY VERRY WEAK IS THIS NORMAL IN THIS SITUATION BEST REGARDS IVAN
Dear anievestor, when I executed the SysEx transfer, there's a warning on my computer "No output Device is Selected or there are no SysEx buffers only Manual Dump supported. Hint: Make sure 'Option / pass SysEx' is checked" . Please advise. Have a nice day! Greetings and best regards!
I think there have been comments and suggestions. I will let them chime in on it. I have personally used M-Audio (they work very well), Roland (also good). I currently have an audio interface Focusrite Saffire PRo 24 DSP. IT has a midi port in the back. It works awesome. A good two for one. You get the audio interface and the midi interface all in one. One catch it only comes with one port. If you can handle only one port and daisy chain several midi devices, you are good. The other ones I suggested are USB based. Make sure you have USB ports in your computer to use. Normally I would tell people go cheap, but there have been too many problems and comments about cheap interfaces that I can not in all good conscience tell you that. Between 60 to 80 bucks you can get something reliable with mulitple ports on it. Well that's my two cents worth. Hope you get something good for you. OBTW make sure you read the manufactures manual before you buy (know a days thay have them posted on the website) make sure they have drivers for your computers OS.
I found this very useful, thanks for posting. I've found several hundred .sys patches online and I was wondering, does the M1 store more than 99 Combination Patches and 99 Program Patches without a card? Right now, that seems to be the limit and adding new patches just overwrites the previous ones. Thanks.
Internally it can only do 100 combis and 100 programs. You can format the cards which should be cheap now a days and add an additional 50/50. But with todays computers there is no problem storing these files you found. I have hundreds myself. All you need is a librarian. I use Midiguest Librarian. It is the first incarnation of what we know now as a Kontakt type librarian. With the exception that all the files are system exclusive the one and only way in those days to brings patches to these units. Now with librarians such as Kontakt everything is done with wave files. The midi librarian gives you freedom to overcome the 100/100 limitation. Hope this helps
OK. I got my M1 connected thru midi to my computer, downloaded midi-ox, and the M1 sound files onto my desk top, made sure all the settings on the M1 are as they should be . . . BUT still nothing happens when I try to send the sounds across to the keyboard. . . . :( Are there settings within midi-ox that I should be checking . . . ? You mention making sure that midi global is set to CH 9 , then no further mention of it, Am I missing something I should be checking elsewhere ? Hoping you can help me DjT
Thank you very much. Yes, that answers my question. What a shame, you know, because I like the sound piano'16 of the Korg M1 and I don't have a Korg synth. I guess I'll try the rack version of the M1
Thanks for the inspiration Anievestor, I finally managed to do the trick as well. But what a struggle. When I used your 7 files from the .zip I only got 6 patches under Prog (no combis, no seqs) with the first vage name "Z Z 2" ? Here's how I managed with a simple 40€ usb-midi converter and windows 7 : Midi-ox buffer size 256 and 25 for both in and out (as default) but selecting the output device is where it went wrong first. If clicked on wrong or multiple devices it would produce an error when clicking OK. From that point on it simply would not work at all unless I rebooted my pc! I had to pick with only one click the output device "midi cable" and touch nothing else but OK button. Also I did not activate midi-input monitor to free up more memory. The biggest improvement came from Korg.com where you can download one file "M1preld.syx" in stead of multiple files. Then I set the SYSEX timeout (menubar: view, Sysex, new pane menubar Sysex, configure) both to 500mS and certainly not to 'automatic'. The big difference suddenly was that the monitor pane showed regular blocks of data with a statusline in the center each second passing thrue another block (before this was a random mess and not in sync which might have explained the rubbish instruments I got or did not get anything). THE most difficult thing in these situations is that you do not know how it is supposed to look when all goes well. Might be a good idea to make a video that shows the real proces also as it shows on the Midi-Ox screens while doing the upload. Cheers, Ernie.
Hi Ernie, I would love to make the video but the process it so quick that you would not get to see much. The main reason is because the data being transmitted is so small, it is not even encrypted it goes by so fast. That's why I have not done it! I am glad you worked it out. Much more satisfying when you are able to fix the problem even when you had to bang it to make it work HAHAHAHA
I would love to do that but the problem is that the process goes so fast you can't see anything! Remember this is NOT encrypted data. It's just a very small binary file and with the serial connection (midi) it goes extremely fast. If you transport yourself back to the era of the 8088 processors then there we can see how slow it used to be. Now with today's processors, it's instant. Glad you got it to work.
I went through all the steps yet my M1 still has no sounds. Just displays "Init Prog" and "init combi" and no sounds are available. I must have not set something up. In your vid you select Channel 9. How is this significant? Where does this relate to the MIDI-OX settings?
I'm having the same problem as Ernie, after sending the .sys file, 1 until 100 has vage names like: 6 6 6D, D 6 6 D6. Tried everything. How to fix this?
Hi, Have followed your vid and been very helpful. Have done all the steps but when i get to seeing the results, the M1 still only has INIT PROG on the screen. Have i missed a step or is there something else i need to do. Appreciate your help. Cheers Mike
+Mike Lind Sorry for the delay response to you. Somehow the message did not reach me thru the normal way ad now I see you message. If you still have the problem let me know so I can better show you where to go.
Thanks so much for this. I'm stuck at the early step of GLOBAL>MIDI FILTERING. My EXCL=DIS and I can't figure out how to toggle it to ENABLE. I've tried all the buttons none do that... Any help greatly appreciated...
hello, excuse knows how to put a keyboard T3 effects and midi cables will connect but not like putting that falling global effects. I hope and can help
Another thing I forgot to mention. Korg apparently made the M1 and at different times during the production put different sets of sounds on the models coming out of the factory, so there willl be sites out there claiming they have the original sounds. That might be true, I have seen several files out there and some of them are different, but anyway they are all good sounds!
If you have a software or hardware sampler you can try sampling the sounds you like. But you will have to have the range of the sound you like within the octave you want to play. This is another way to get it, or you can try to find who made it if the company is still available they could have made it for several synth. You might get lucky. You never know. Like me know what your research gives you.
Ok I am confused. First of all I understand that you have a Midi interface that is USB, correct? If that is correct then the second part of the equation. Do you have a Midi controller keyboard that is also USB? If you are connecting the Korg thru the midi usb interface the flashing green and yellow are OK not bad. It means that there is communication with the PC. Does your computer register it a usb controller that has been properly installed? Just a few questions to help you
hi ! thank you for the video :) but i have a question Everytime i do this steps i got this message : (((SysEx output devices: le port est en train de transmette des donnée au peripherique. Attendez que les données soient transmises et réessayez.))) what should i do .. thank you
Well thanks for the email. Well my French is a bit rusty (just kidding. I don't know French, I do know Google translate though). It sounds to me that there might something else sending a signal to your midi port. I assume you data is being transmitted because you don't say it isn't. Make sure you are not connected to other midi gear that might be sending data. Just shut them off and close your DAW if it is open. Check your cables.
DAW is a computer application that is used to record and compose music. It stands for Digital Audio Workstation. If your connections are correct there should be no problems. Please give me a run down of the equipment and how you have it connected. Photo would be appreciated. Thanks
Plenty of places on the web for that. I like the EMU USB midi. I just googled the one that I got and found it for $40. Sadly I paid more for it. But it is a very good and reliable box. EMU was bought a awhile back by Creative the people that do the sound cards for computers. They have all sorts of boxes at different prices. Just check on the INTERNET and get one that satisfies your needs. Good Luck and create away!!!
anivestor, I have the same problem here. I looked at all the settings so many times but I cannot make it work. I am using the patches from the website you showed in your video. I am using a Mac and SysEx Librarian because MidiOX is nto compatible with Macs. Any advise will be great. thanks
Oh when i thought i had loaded sounds to it it was just the computer because you can hear the sounds changing on the computer but when plugged the keyboard to the amp it didn't have any sounds just the piano on all the sounds
Hi Juan I'm having trouble get my Korg to load the factory patches I followed all your steps but it still won't work. You said you used channel 9 but I did not see where you set mid-ox to channel 9 could you please explain. Thanks Mario
I have one question. Can I connect for example a non Korg banded keyboard, in order to download the patches or the sounds to a Yamaha, for example, branded Keyboards?
Does the MIDI OX softwear up end running on window 7? Because I tried many times to send back the sysex files to my keyboard and nothing really went throught. I followed all your instruction whitout any succes. Any suggestions. Michel
+Carlos Rojas Hola Carlos.
great video.....thanks for this but i'm kinda stuck. i've got the new battery in using your video instructions but now i can't get to get the "GLOBAL" button activated or any other button for that matter and without access to GLOBAL i'm kinda dead in the water. any ideas?
FuntimeVideoChannel I need a bit more info. Have you turned it off and back on again? Do you feel that the button might be stuck? If so try finding a can of tuner spray. I use to get my from Radio Shack (went away) but there could be stores in your neighborhood that might be still open, or try Best Buy. Let me know if you have more info. Thanks
thanks....i did eventually get the "global' button to activate which let me upload the programs again. i still can't get the "combis" to load though. don't know why. any idea on that?
Make sure that you setup the M1 to accept the number of progs and combis you want. It has several options. But you must format the keyboard to the correct setting and then upload the patches and combis you have and it will accept it. Let me know how it works.
hi again, i tried a few different setting...50 progs/50combis and 100progs/100combis and neither one worked. then i tried just loading the combis alone. setup for 50 and then again for 100. neither of those worked. i appreciate your help but i think at this point i probably have an internal button problem or something hardware related....the machine is 25 years old. so i guess it's just shot.
OK lets go step by step. Do you have a sequencer program? If you do can you communicate with it using your midi interface? Second if the answer is yes. Then we can rule out the interface. Third we can then move on to midiox. You can put your Korg on channel 1 and putting midiox to transmit and receive in Omni mode. This will make it accept any channel. Try this and get back to me.
Danny G Make sure you have the right battery and that you put it on the correct side. Check the video and sure sure the numbers behind the battery are up (you can see them). That's all it should not give you any problems.
I can't find the screen in Global mode that has the ENA's!! Found MIDI GLOBAL but after that it was a bust..You show it as the next screen after the Global mode screen. Which but will be the right one to turn to the next page? Thank you in advance.
Damn. Thanks, man! I bought my Korg M1 in 1990 for $2200. Had traded in my grandfather's Gretsch guitar for some of that (one of my top 3 worst choices in life!). Love the synth but it never amounted to anything. Battery went dead and it sat in the closet for about 22 years...until today. Anxious to get back into music and decided to bring the ole synth back to life. Installed a new battery and now need to upload the sounds. This video will help IMMENSELY! Any suggestions for cleaning keys? Looks as though a couple are slow to pop back up and one in particular just stick when i press it. Im guessing some funk got down between the keys years ago (probably beer!). Any thoughts on making a video where you take the keys out and clean them? Thanks again!
I have not considered that but it could be a possibility. I did find one video on youtube that helped on working with sticky keys. The process is the same. I am working on other ideas right now to help people with the lost art of using Midi. The technology is still valid but there are a number of issues with the new DAW that make it sometime tedious at times. But I will keep that in mind especially if my keys get stuck. Anyway take a look at that video I am talking about. If it doesn't help you much send me a link and I will look at it and work on one better. Thanks Happy Holidays
anievestor Worked great! All my sounds are back. Still gotta clean the keys but the worst is done (I think...)! The only issue I had was when you opened MIDI-OX > Actions > Send > SysEx File I got a error message saying that a device had not been picked. I had to go to Options > Midi Devices and select my Midi/USB port for both the MIDI In and MIDI Out. in my case a Yamaha UX16). After that all went just as you showed! Just wasn't sure if you wanted to try and include that in the video or anything. Thanks again, mate!
There is a person that posted a video. Quite intensive process since it requires opening the unit again, but totally doable. Just using some air dusting cans you know the ones you use for computer to blast all the crap from the keyboards food, candy etc. and some tuning lubricant you can buy in Radio Shack. Hope this helps.
Mark Eskola13 hours agoFirst of all, your video on changing the battery was great. I did that and now am trying to restore the sounds. I get the midiox installed but when I open it shows No Output devices and No Input devices. I have tried the midi cables both ways: in put to input, out put to out put and reversed. My USB to Midi device has a single cable connecting the USB to the computer and one midi marked IN and another marked OUT. Any help would be appreciated.
It should work right out of the box. Did your interface work with your computer before? Do you have access to another synth you can plug in? I ask this because if you can get information flowing in and out of your DAW then you interface is OK. For now I suspect the interface until proven different. Please test it this way. Let me know what happens. There is not much you need to do in Midiox to get it to work. There is a setting menu option. Make sure your interface is recognized by the midiox. Let me know BTW sorry for the delayed response.
Purchased Roland UM-One Mk2. Confirmed Win 10 drivers would auto load on installation. Connected to Korg M1 per your instructions: Input from Roland to Output on Korg 1. Think I set the channel on the MIDI-OX correctly to match the channel on the Korg, but may not have. Set all other settings on the Korg per your video. When I download the Vintage Synth files and open them it shows they downloaded but the Input Port Activity does not show activity on the channel I selected. It does show activity on the Output port under SX. Under the Input port the green light shows activity under the Midi-ox generated event, but, again, nothing under the channel I selected. In any case, the program files are not being repopulated. Please help.
Please make sure that you have enabled the M1 for save patches to the unit. Under global settings take the protection off for the internal patches. If you are sending also combi's then you have to do the same thing for the combi's unprotect them or else you can be sending patches until you are blue in the face and unit will not save them. Also after you do this make sure that you use the selection button (the up and down button) click it up and down. The unit needs to go thru this cycle to refresh the unit! Let me know what happens
I'll try that next. Also, how do I confirm I have the same channel on the Midi-ox and the Korg? In other words, where in Midi-ox do I go to set it's output channel?
My humble contribution for this issue:
I recently bought Korg M1 and wanted to reload the factory presets.
I'm about to embark on the journey, I've got the Scarlet 2i4 also. Did you have to use 2 midi cords as he describes?
Excellent. Years later from when you put this up it still is helping people like me! Thank you!!
Glad it is still doing its job. Thanks and be safe!
@@anievestor it's really like rediscovering an instrument after 30 years! Stay safe too 👍👍
Seriously underrated piece of equipment. Not only do you get 200 sounds, which you can change out any time you like, you can record full multilayered tracks to this thing. Great for sketching ideas and making interesting soundscapes. After taking an unused one apart and restoring the patches I've found this thing to be a real gem.
Very True. It can fit into the description of timeless!
This was one of the most informational videos ever for the M1. I have used this video as a tutorial and as a reference. Thank you.
I knew there was nothing out there but never thought so many people would like it. Glad I could help some!
Glad to be there for you. I made it when nobody helped me go thru my problem. Glad it helped!
Great job!
(My music is on Spotify, Jango and iTunes.)
Thank You!
Sir,
Thank you for thoroughly explaining how to do this.
Hermano, You're a life saver! The battery on my N364 just crapped out and I was able to recover all of the sounds using your method.
Glad it help. As you can see it is not only for the Korg but for an unit. Good Luck and get inspired!
"No Output Device is Selected or there are no SysEx buffers. Only Manual Dump Supportes.
Hint: Make sure "options/Pass SysEx" is Checked."
Tendras algun concejo para esta situación!!
Thank you for your help. I've been trying to sort this out for ages and you've explained it well and now my M1 has proper sounds again! Nice one.
Obrigado Senor. Saludos!
Cual es el problemas. El teclado no la lee? La tarjeta se ve fisicamente bien?
Thanks
thank you for the quick reply. it worked, its great. i use audiobox for 200$ - good enough, it worked
What I meant is, Can I connect my Yamaha Keyboard to the MIDI port so I can download some Korg souns to it with the Midi ox tool?
BTW: I am using a M1R
Once I got the factory settings restored using the mid file, I can now upload various program banks using midiox and sysex.
I did change the batery in my KORG M1, and when I should load all the things from my card, the music wasen´t there.....? where can I find the original musicfiles for KORG M1....:-)

HELLO ,,I HAVE N PROBLEME WITH THE M1 AFTER DEAD BATTERY
I HAVE ALSO THE PROGRAMS AND SOUNDS BUT VERRY VERRY WEAK ON THE BACKGROUND , ONLY ON MAX VOLUME I HEAR THE SOUNDS VERRY VERRY WEAK
IS THIS NORMAL IN THIS SITUATION
BEST REGARDS IVAN
Brilliant. I think my trouble was not having excl enabled. Many thanks.
Oh just let you know I have sys ex enabled and clk ext ch 1 memory off not protected. Thanks
Hi Ernie,
I would love to make the video but the process it so quick that you would not get to see much.
+anievestor Hi. Still have not been able to resolve issue of patches holding in the Korg once uploaded from computer to Korg. Any help appreciated.
+Mike Lind please make sure that the m1 does not have the protection on. Go to global and look for protect and tell me how it's setup.

Just a few questions to help you
hi ! thank you for the video :) but i have a question
what should i do .. thank you
Well thanks for the email.
DAW ? what is it ?
btw i'm using a MIDI to USB cable, in your video you are using that box i don't have it
DAW is a computer application that is used to record and compose music.
Any advise will be great. thanks
Oh when i thought i had loaded sounds to it it was just the computer because you can hear the sounds changing on the computer but when plugged the keyboard to the amp it didn't have any sounds just the piano on all the sounds
you saved me a great amount of time and trouble .. THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!!!
No problems. Glad I could help. that's what youtube is for. To help others. I have recieved so much help in the past this is my little contribution!
Hello
I did all you said but nothing happen, can you help me please
Hi Juan
I'm having trouble get my Korg to load the factory patches I followed all your steps but it still won't work. You said you used channel 9 but I did not see where you set mid-ox to channel 9 could you please explain. Thanks Mario
question: would the midi light blink if it's actually receiving sysex data?
I have one question.
Can I connect for example a non Korg banded keyboard, in order to download the patches or the sounds to a Yamaha, for example, branded Keyboards?
Does the MIDI OX softwear up end running on window 7? Because I tried many times to send back the sysex files to my keyboard and nothing really went throught. I followed all your instruction whitout any succes. Any suggestions. Michel
Michel Cholette Yes it does work because that is what I have at home. What sorts of problems are you having?
a replase the battery but mine korg i3 geaves me nothing than i black display. Can someone help?
+Carlos Rojas Hola Carlos.
Excellent video, sir! Very clear and lots of good info. Thank you!
great video.....thanks for this but i'm kinda stuck. i've got the new battery in using your video instructions but now i can't get to get the "GLOBAL" button activated or any other button for that matter and without access to GLOBAL i'm kinda dead in the water.
I have a quick question I just changed the battery on my korg m1 and it still continues to display low battery do you have any clue what it can be?
Danny G Make sure you have the right battery and that you put it on the correct side. Check the video and sure sure the numbers behind the battery are up (you can see them). That's all it should not give you any problems.
I can't find the screen in Global mode that has the ENA's!! Found MIDI GLOBAL but after that it was a bust..You show it as the next screen after the Global mode screen. Which but will be the right one to turn to the next page? Thank you in advance.
Press "Global", then "Page +" 11 times to get to the MIDI filtering page that has the ENAs
Hi , I did all the steps but I didn;t get what you meant by channel ? ( yours was 9 , mine shows 1 , how do I check the correct channel ?
thanks a lot
Thanks Happy Holidays
anievestor
Worked great!
I don't have my computer with me right now, but tonight when i get home I can let you know. Sorry :-(
