- Many hits of the late 80s and early 90s featured the piano and organ presets of the Korg M1 synthesizer, especially in the house music genre. Here are a few examples, We'll listen to the original track and then I'll try to recreate the riff on the M1. Not as easy as you might think... :)

That Robin S organ is still the best synth sound ever!
That is Preset "Perc. Organ" on the M1
Yep and the same with the piano sound used in house music
"Robin S - Show Me Love" sound preset VSTi KORG M1 (BROWSER / PROG / CARD / CARD 1 / Preset: M01 17 Organ 2) ? And similar like sound preset VSTi KORG M1 (BROWSER / COMBI / SEARCH / Preset: M01 29 M1HouseSplit ) ?
TOTALLY AGREE ON THIS ONE.
You can approximate it on nearly any drawbar organ. Just gotta add reverb, delay, and some compression
Basically the M1 is everything I love in these songs, and I did not know!
And the Tx81z by Yamaha, just for the "LatelyBass" C15 preset:-)
Yep
Sameeee
One machine. And a decade of memories.
M1 Piano + 909 is the sound of early 90s house
And Tx81z!!
@@dussie920 yes ! lately bass
2:18 the sound of the organ is very warm, I love it
As soon as I hear that M1 organ I’m on the dance floor without hesitation 😂
That Gypsy Woman chords sounds absolutely amazing!! In France we can find the M1 for around 180€ no ones wants it anymore! In 2018 listening to Silk City, Calvin Harris... The M1 is back on the charts baby!!
“In France we can find the M1 for around 180€” that comment aged poorly.
Although to be fair, Korg released the M1 VST a few years ago.
EDIT: AND the 3DS app M01D (which itself is an upgraded version of the Japan-only DS software Korg M01) followed by the iOS app Korg i01 which is basically an even more powerful M1 that also includes EVERY song its upgraded version, the T1, in one app, and I'm not even counting the purchasable presets! You can also use the i01 with Korg's own VST Korg Gadget (under the name Darwin) if you own both.
In poland still for about 200$
@@RealXFool damn and 500$ second hand in France
My M1R with 4 MB ram was a bit more than those, but it came with a stack of cards. I love it to death. My dad had a M1 back in the day and I love its weird engine. If you get deep into the menus you can follow the attack sample with any analog subtractive waveform you desire...mostly. This keyboard was also used a LOT in TV production. Just watch 90s TV and you will hear the M1 all the time.
I bought it in Norway for around $200. So I'm sure you can get it in France for a similar price.
Sounds of my childhood. Finally I know where they come from
it all comes from The Korg!
@@Diamond_Tiarapretty much 😂
The iconic piano and organ sounds from most 90s House songs are from that synth? That's the best discovery of the year.
I'll definitely add this synth my favorite synths for that reason, these sounds are so iconic.
The M1 just sound classy and timeless!
It sounds fresh today whereas other similar synths, even the Triton a whole decade later, are sounding mostly dated or even downright cringy. Even today, knowing that workstations are mostly a thing of the past, the Korg M1 rises in popularity again! It's a damn masterpiece.
3:16 Crystal Waters - "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)". I love that organ riff, but I never knew the name of the song or the artist it was by. Now I do. THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video!
It's been sampled so much, it's incredible!
I LOVE GYPSY WOMAN (SHE'S HOMELESS)!
What you needed to make a 90's hit was a Korg M1 and a Roland TR-909 job done.
Almost or a good Roland W30 or a EMU or Akai MPC
And a XZC-KLO/5x/XXX-Schkelkischrel.
What you needed to make a hit is TALENT. The kit used is elementary. I could have had a hit using a DX7 and RX7. If the song is there.
The black DIVA without her impossible to create than unique 90's garage/deep house hit
@@fender1000100 Which I don't have enough of. I do have a M1 DX7 and Juno 106 though. What I am missing is real talent. With hours of practice I can play a few things.
for when you get one of these, the legendary organ preset is "Organ 2". The piano used in RIAD is actually called Magic Piano. Piano 16' (bank 1, preset 1) is the house piano. load up, and tweak until it sounds just like the song. those two are EVERYWHERE. tunr off the effects to start if you have the VST, then add to taste.
korg m1 was all over the 90s
Proud owner of two T1s here, the extended 88 key weighted version of the M1. Still love it to these days. Never use another keyboard, although most of the time, it runs through my Mac and software synths.
That Show Me Love was beautifull
I got almost the holy trinity. A DX7, D50 and O1/W which was M1's grandchild :)
It's so funny that fake piano Korg sound became THE piano sound in house music. Amazing!
"show me love" sound is amazing
3:34
i love these chords
The best ever made workstation to produce dance music
M1 is worth the money just for that piano
WorksopGimp it's such a powerful sound. Cuts through any mix.
piano learning
It really the dance piano of dance pianos
I've got a Yamaha PSR something, and it's got a great clone of the M1 piano. Add a little reverb and voila.
You can get it as a VSTi nowadays.
I love these piano skills and everything about this video.
I have a DX7 and a D-50...I feel like now I HAVE to buy a Korg M1 just to complete the holy trinity.
i have all of saint trinity of 80's
Нахер тебе этот мусор?)
I used to have a D10 (the D50s little brother) a CZ1, a VZ1 and a Juno 106. If my situation changes I may have to buy them all again plus an M1 for those sweet 90s pianos.
hahaha, I had the D10 too, because I couldn't afford the D50.
Don't forget the Roland MKS-20, the rack version of the mega-classic digital
piano of the 1980s, the Roland RD-1000.
LOVE the piano sound this thing makes
Great video. Definitely one of the defining keyboards, along with the DX7. Still capable these days too, when linked with other instruments.
90s creators really adopted and made amazing music with this machine. Eurodance😍😍😍😍
wow the "show me love" sound is spot on, amazing, the other sounds too lol omg
Good old Korg M1!! I love forever M1. Amazing 🎹🎹🍻🍻👍👍
I’m getting old. 😂
I remember first playing the M1 in the early 90’s. The Wavestation and 01/Wfd are two of my favorite Korg synths.
Great work Woody - love those lower register notes!
Wow!
Always love the DX7, D50, M1 and 01W
Tenho todos!
I have these 4 synths too. they all sound great. de 01w is in repair at the moment.
Just bought a M1 today for £120, already enjoying playing around on it but it could seriously add some nice sounds to my stuff, well happy!
This is great. I would love to see another video like this with famous sounds. Thumbs up!
Just bought a Korg M1 recently, mainly due to my love for early 90's rave and dance music :) Thanks for showing the M1 some love, and keep up the great work on your channel.
i'm sure you'll enjoy it, thanks for the feedback!
Now add a Tx81z for the bassline! Present C15, called LatelyBass. :-)
Soooooo 90's and used in about every dance track back then.
You hit every cover dead on...amazing!
Awesome !
I saw the M1 debuted at Olympia and I thought the world had changed !
That thing is amazing Love the sounds
Dude, I was at a friends house last night trying to remember the name of the song, Show Me Love. There's some new song out that was totally influenced by it that my friends kids are into. Thanks for helping me find it. I knew there was a classic organ sound that I remember from my days playing the M1 at college. Good stuff man, keep it up! I still have my Korg 05RW that I bought later from earning money working at Walmart in the early 90s. What's crazy is at the time they where offering share in Walmart to be taken out of your paycheck. Needless to say I should have taken them up at that offer lol
Very interesting vidéo to understand the use of this great synthétiseur , thank you for sharing your passion ;)
i love my m1.Good video and nice play
Man! The M1 still has the dust on it from the 80's and 90's. Epic!
'80s and '90s.
@@siler7 You knew what I meant dork!
@@opinionatorX That you don't understand apostrophes? Yes, that was clear. Now I also know that you don't understand commas.
@@siler7 Okay...Sorry for calling you a dork. Do you accept?
@@opinionatorX Sure. Have a great day.
I had the m1 & dw 8000 those where cutting edge. Recognize the piano. Such a gud vibration haha got the m3 now what a machine
Wonderful video! Seriously magical watching you play
I had a M1 EX (modified after purchase) for 5 or 6 years (before the keyboard died). It was a fantastic machine with multiple layers, sequencer and great sounds.
It was perfect to create "song" like the one you were playing in the video. But I still have some difficulties to see the M1 as a "real" synthesizer. It was more a "rompler" with very good sound selection, a kind of super Sound Canvas.
Creating new sound were merely impossible, it was possible but you were finally always coming back to some existing presets (more or less the same).
I love it, piano sounds were really great, all sounds were well balanced with the others, nothing bad to say.
But coming from modular world I was always feeling frustration with the M1 when it comes to create "your" sounds. Apart a few emblematic sounds, all the others (and those you created) were sounding the same.
I know some people will think I'm false, and it's ok, each one has his own perception, they will say the M1 was a real synth. Then I'll say Ok, let's play : let me hear your incredible sounds that I have never heard. I will be honest, if you win the game I'll say it.
So, the M1 was a very good rompler with beautiful sounds, but even in buying all cards, you were finally ending with the same set of sounds. The VST version has not the warmth of the real M1, but for those emblematic sounds it is a good solution (with all cards for the same price ! so you can see all sounds are the same :-( ).
you totaly nailed the show me love organ baseline
Thanks for refreshing this golden tracks, nice work bro👍
I don't know why I love this type of music so much, but I do.
The M1 is still my go-to synth for any piano
The piano preset is used extensively on Mariah Carey's 2nd studio album, Emotions, including the title track.
Nice going. This was a time when Brit pop music was changing (1988+). I recall the AKAI S1100 was everywhere and now I see, thanks to your presentation, so too was the M1.
yeah, the music of that era was defined by the akai samplers, would be interesting to try one as i could never afford one at the time.
I always enjoy learning songs by ear. I like having the music too though. Just in case I don't know the exact way to play something. Great video. Take care, Sam.
thanks sam, yeah this was by ear too, but I would have saved some time with sheet music, so I usually check for that first. in this case it didn't exist or was inaccurate.
The problem is you can't really get accurate transcription of pop songs for sheet music.
I totally agree.
Now I get why all that music sounded so similar hahaha :-D
Thanks for the demo man. Nice work :-)
Sounds of my childhood. Finally I know where they come its the Organ
your skillz and choice of music!
👍👍👍1st all-in-one music work station
That's pretty darn close!! Great job!
Exelente yo conservo mi Korg M1 me gusta mucho sus sonidos muy bien el vídeo saludos Woody piano shack
SUPERB! I need to get one of these!
You're so damned entertaining and talented. Been listening all morning. I declare March 9 National Woody Piano Shack Day. lol
i second that emotion!
Thankfully I have most if not all of those sounds in my Triton Studio. Now I need to figure out how to play that Robin S song.. thanks for getting it stuck in my brain. :)
Enjoyed ur little performance very much 😎
Excellent comparison - keep it up !
Unrelated to this video, but Queen used the M1's "Universe" sound on their 1991 _Innuendo_ album track "Don't Try So Hard".
Great!, this video just now told me to hurry up getting reparied my Korg N364 which has these Korg m1 legend presets, thanks for the video!!
M1 is to the 90s what the DX7 was to the 80s. Overstatement or worthy?
Worthy all 2. I have both and the Roland D50, they have their own capabilities and legendary sounds
Correct
Makes sense since Yamaha manufactures their components since forever, they even bought Korg shortly after the success of the M1.
Korg's founder then bought back Yamaha's shares in 1993.
great concept !
Though I was listening to Rock and Jazz at the time, these were "good, exciting and changing times."
Beautiful sounds
Well done! You did it well 😍
i love the 90's music and 80' music ,, and 90' sounds 80's sounds,,, the M1 (90's) ,,, and yamaha dx7 (80's)
In the song “Ride on Time” (1988-1990), the Korg M1 MPC-00P programs patch “Piano 8’” as the piano sounds in sometimes in 5ths was heard.
Fantastic! Love it.
Very nice! Don't forget Des'ree's "You gotta be" which also featured an M1.
I enjoyed a lot the video. I will go back to my (vst) M1 straight away
Cool Video!!!👏👏👏
On the Album Innuendo from Queen this Synth is Featured A lot
I would have loved to hear the whoo-hoow of Ride on Time from you, Woody. I was really looking forward to that, but then the video took a different turn. Keep it up, man!
i so should have done that!
Fantastic mate.
Could Nine and Universe pad, my favorite pressets of this fantastic M1!!
I love this particular piano. It sounds so great for House music. Probably why so many artists used it.
Great Video 🎶
Thanks for this music lesson 👍🏼
Korg m1 organ always sound amazing
Well played! Funky as hell!😎😎
What a Miracle
Korg M1?
Thank You Woody
Great Explanation

Great man ! Love that M1
You nailed them :)
In some Misery (1990) theme, the Korg M1 MPC-00P programs patch "Piano" was heard.
My first keyboard EVER! I wrote a ton of songs and saved them to Roland Quick Disks using a Yamaha MIDI Data Filer. I don't know where I can get a machine to read those anymore. But I'm sure the MIDI data for the songs is just terrible now. ;-) But your system recorded the M1 in a truly rich way. I'll have to explore it again.
The best part about the M1 is that with that one keyboard my band in 1992 won some kind of contest and got sent to compete in central Canada and then Tokyo, Japan. Great memories. I still have my board for posterity.
My favourite I41 patch song is EMF's You're Unbelievable.
My favourite patch overall is I36 Synth Bass 1.
That sounds so nice, it's like a bass guitar mixed with a piano. It's a very sexy sound.
love this kinda video. I do just what woody is doing. fire up some you-tune fun and play along.
I play a Krone EX 76.
..and also ,Rich in paradise, haha regards great video from good old times...
What a synth,Queen had used this for their last album with Freddy Innuendo.
They used it on a number of tracks on "Innuendo", namely "Innuendo", "Don't Try So Hard" and "I'm Going Slightly Mad"...
Daniel Davies yes,and on These Are The days of our lives maybe on Bijou too or it was DX7?A great synth.
The Show Must Go On uses a string patch off an M1
Show Must Go On - DX-7
