Hey Matt - You have a lot of great tips on your channel. 👍 This helps de-mystify SysEx a bit and shows how important it is that it's fully implemented.
@@mwmusic29 Also worth noting that as you said in the video it takes several runs of the sysex date to completely restore the banks - first time it only got to preset 37 - a subsequent four or five runs got it to the full 99.
@@campfirecoyote Glad it finally worked. Slowing down the transmit speed might help in the future. These old machines need lots of time to take it all in! :)
Excellent, thanks so much for sharing this! I bought a second hand M1 a few years back and the internal battery is running low. I've been too lazy to replace/don't know how to replace it and just needed to update the factory presets today. This worked perfectly :)
Hi Matt, Can I simply use a "Lekato" MIDI to USB Cable found for 30$ on Amazon to transfer the data from my PC to my Korg M1 or should I buy a more expensive connector like the one you have (you didn't talk about that detail) it seems to be a "Focusrite Scarlett" and is a LOT more expensive. Hoping to get an answer from you before proceeding - thanks in advance!
Hello! You are correct, I use a USB audio interface (Focusrite 18i8). I typically don't recommend a USB to MIDI cable just because I've heard may reports that they can be unreliable for sysex transfer but it's certainly a much less expensive option and if it works, you're in great shape for very little expense! I know that's not a super definitive answer but hopefully it helps a bit. Let me know if you have more questions and thanks for stopping by!!
@@mwmusic29 thanks for the fast reply. I checked and a Focusrite 18i8 is worth 639$ CAD, more than a Korg M1 on Ebay (595$ CAD) I'll give a shot on a simple cable and will let you know if it worked. Your video was absolutly great, thanks again.
hi matt, I'm having some issues getting this to work. I'm using a USB cable (roland um-one mk2) with a mac. it looks like the data is transmitting, but nothing ever shows up on the M1. i tried slowing it down, still nothing. how slow.do you think i need to go?
It's hard to say but I'd try one session of the lowest speed you can muster. If that doesn't work then you may have an issue with the USB cable. I'm not saying the cable is bad, but rather that the cable might not be allowing the transfer. In my experience the USB/MIDI cable converter cables can be hit and miss. Once you try the slowest speed just try changing a patch on your M1 to see if it took the load. Hopefully you'll have some good success soon!!
@@mwmusic29 thanks for the response! good news, i figured it out...i just had my midi cables into the M1 backwards. whoops! my M1 is running great now! :)
@@mwmusic29 you wouldn't happen to know how to fix sticky keys on an Alesis MMT-8, would you? or know of a repair facility in the seattle area who could do that? :)
There are usb to MIDI cables and I forgot to discuss that in the video. However those are not as reliable in successfully transmitting the data. They work well for playing but can be hit or miss when trying to send sysex to the synth.
@@mwmusic29 Thanks for the video, but I ran into a problem... I'm having to use a USB to MIDI cable from my Mac to a exM1R.... the transfer appears to go fast and doesn't show any errors or anything but it's not loading anything. When I restart it's still at the initial program... Any thoughts? I also can't seem to locate the exM1r file, only the M1r could that be it?
@@holeshot1982 It's possible that the module version has its own sysex like you said. I'm not sure on that. Have you tried slowing down the transmit speed from your Mac? It might be sending the file so fast the unit can't even respond. That's just a guess, but try slowing it down if you can.
@@mwmusic29 thanks man, I did manage to get it by slowing things down... but as a reminder to others that might be having my issue and not familiar with MIDI, make sure the cables are in the correct orientation 🤦♂
