Update: Hoooooooh boy! This recipe is fantastic. My wife loved it. I loved it. My cat gazed at it like she would have loved it had we given her a piece. It's rich, delicious comfort food at its finest. I'll be making this again for sure!
Salisbury steak with a mushroom gravy and mash is one of my all-time comfort food meals, complete nostalgia. That frozen Hungry Man box brought back memories.
I had a Hungry Man ten years ago and the one in this show looks nothing like it. The sauce is just like jello in this video. Before it was a big gooey but it was clearly a thick sauce.
As children in the 1950's my father would let us pick out which Swanson TV dinners we wanted to eat while staying up late to watch "Gunsmoke" and "Have Gun will travel" on Saturday nights. We always picked fried chicken or salisbury steak. We didn't know it then, but those really were the good old days.
don't know how much you read your comments, but I used this video yesterday to cook a birthday lunch requested by a 12 yr old. I made a few minor changes, but she helped me cook it for ourselves and 8 other adults. we got the best compliments of anything I have cooked for the group. It was a wonderful time exploring her interest of cooking and tasted amazing. Thank you for posting this and for all of your inspiring videos! God bless!!
Back in my day, we had roof shingles every Saturday for dinner and we thanked our parents for this shingles! We even ate the leftover roofing nails for Sunday snacks!
Dude….. you just made home cooking WORTH it to bypass the frozen tv dinner all together!! That Salisbury steak is to die for! You just chose dinner tonight 👍🏼
Love all your content. Random video idea !! Your camera man vs camera man Manny from Nick's show in a camera man cook off with you and Nick as a blind taste judge.
The sauce you made with the Salisbury steak is almost exactly what I did for a crockpot Yankee roast beef I made. My roommate is very allergic to wheat flour, so I had to figure out how to do a gluten free brown gravy using rice flour. I normally use 2 pkgs onion mushroom soup mix & 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, but they both have flour in them. So I did a brown gravy with beef broth, used fresh mushrooms & onions, rice flour, & Worcestershire sauce, heavy cream & pepper. Lol, because I was using a powdered beef bouillon for the broth, it was salty enough. It was the best pot roast I've ever made!!
As much as I love cooking from scratch, every so often busting out a frozen Salisbury steak family pack just hits some great levels of nostalgia. I've also done them quick and easy with minced meat and canned french onion soup.
I've loved and been making Salisbury steak for years. And I just learned about baking instead of frying them. It makes it so much easier. But I hadn't thought of adding some ketchup, till now. My simple gravy is 2 pkg brown gravy mix 1 can of cream of mushrooms soup and a can of beef broth all mixed together and pouted on top of the meat after flipping and bake for 25 more minutes. Works great everytime
What timing on this video! 6:32 I had a rough today today, found my long time feline-friend had passed on. Those nice words would have been easy to cut/omit, but they actually do help a little bit, and I appreciate it. I find cooking cathartic. And now I've got a outstanding looking new recipe to try, thanks Sonny!
My condolences. It's never easy losing apart of your family. I find cooking to be cathartic as well, so I'm glad you have something to help with the grief.
I just made this for Sunday lunch and it blew us away. Oh my gosh, the mushroom gravy was to DIE for. Every last bite was craveable, and we both wanted more. Hands down your best recipe yet. I’ll be making this for friends and family from this day forward. As a side note, I did order a jar of marmite and it made such a big difference in the flavor of the gravy. Chef’s kiss! ❤❤❤
Growing up family didn't really prepare a lot of American dishes. However where I could get it, when I could get it, from the first time I had it, Salisbury steak has been a favorite and is tied to so many great memories.

Another enjoyable video! I usually watch your videos, especially your shorts, with my 8 and 10-year-old kids. They actually love it when you clown out together with Marcus! Your channel is much more then a cooking channel, in my humble opinion. It's pure entertainment!
Nice. If you want to go with shortcut, instead of roasting greated onions you can use crushed roasted onions that you'd normally add on top of hot dog. Works everytime. Im also adding this to my burger, just grounded beef, crushed roasted onions, salt'n'pepper and butter in room temp. 👍
When you said "It'll all work out in the end, your whole life will work out, don't worry about it!" I knew you were my kind of chef "We are getting into textures that don't exist in nature" made me laugh, you two are hilarious
Came out GREAT. The little details you do make a huge difference. Oven, then broiler. Adding grated and sauteed onion to the mix, etc. Came out so good I even did the little dance. 🥩🍄🧅👨🍳👨🍳👨🍳
When my father passed away late last year, he told me that he had always wanted to be a chef. That was something that nobody knew about him. I have since found peace through cooking at home for myself and my family. I appreciate your positivity in these videos, I feel it 💯
My Dad, who passed away at age 83 in 1994, was our chief cook and bottle washer. He did all our family’s cooking except for holidays and desserts. I guess he passed along the cooking gene. I do all of our cooking, moving from weekend cooking to full time when my wife was diagnosed with dementia. Like you, it brings me joy and comfort.
2:31 As a German, that's what most of us do; me included. Quality meat, no fears. In the end, we eat "Mett" which is literally raw pork. Aside from that, this microwave pack reminded me of these very compact, frozen ground meat "steaks" which I demolished as a kid in various ways. Good, cheap and quick meal...
Made this tonight, but substituted tallow for butter when searing the mushrooms and added a healthy splash of beer in my roux. I've made a lot of Salisbury Steak over the years, but this was by far my favourite. Thanks Dude

6:50 "your whole life is gonna work out... don't even worry about it" I came for the Salisbury steak recipe but I stayed for the vibrant meaningful philosophy.
We made this last weekend.. Holy.. Wow! It was so good, I remade the sauce to coat with some mashed potatoes the following night with our leftover steaks. So wonderful!
Why does this look SO much better than the picture on the frozen version?? Salisbury steak is one of those dishes that my stomach doesn’t realize when it’s full. I can keep on eating it until it’s gone .
Been looking for a Salisbury steak recipe forever, something delicious that does not fall apart. The bake/broil method is genius! The seasoning is spot on, the [hamburger/meatloaf] steak tasted amazing. Thank you for this solution and it is a 5-star recipe in my Paprika recipe box.
I love you rosemary salt. Made a pasta salad for my friends last week using it and they flipped for the seasoning on the salad! I keep it coming in the fridge!
Dude, Sonny, I love you man but we need more Marcus. I’ve tried many of your recipes and I love the rosemary salt, I know. Marcus is the camera man that needs to be front and center. Keep up the great stuff that you all do. Luvyas!!!
I made this tonight. I replaced the green beans with roasted broccoli though. It was delicious. The wife and son approved it as well. Going into the rotation. Thanks
I make this at least once a week. It's the absolute best recipe out there. I also love the rosemary salt. 👍👍it takes the dish to whole new level. I've never been able to make a good gravy. Well, this gravy you can use on other dinner as well. It's so delicious. ❤
Going to make this for my Hungry Man loving, seventy nine year old mother. Swanson turkey dinners, frozen pot pies and Salisbury steaks are her guilty pleasure comfort foods. I'll see if I can impress her with this recipe.
Salisbury Steak - This was the name given to this dish during World War "I" along with Hot Dogs getting their name. Otherwise this was a "Hamburg Steak Dinner" and hot dogs were "Frankfurter Sausages." Very similar to what was tried with "Freedom Fries" during the Gulf War. A note on tasting raw mince mixtures for seasoning before cooking them off. You can microwave a scant teaspoon of the mixture for 20-30 seconds and taste for seasoning. I recently learned this trick from my reading about East Asian dumpling making and it's come in handy a number of times.
This is a reinvention of the Salisbury steak. The actual Salisbury steak as recommended by Dr. Salisbury is a bit different. Although he didn't call it such, he used it as an elimination diet considering it as a way to repair one's digestion. His version was cubed beef cleaned of all connective tissue and extraneous fats packed together just enough to stay together while cooked. His book, "The Relation of Alimentation and Diseases" is a fascinating read.
I made this last night following the recipe except that I don't have Marmite in my pantry so I used a bit of Pickapeppa sauce. If you're not familiar with Pickapeppa from Jamaica you should give it a try. I'm old enough to remember when Swanson invented the term "TV Dinner" back in 1954. My sisters and I considered TV dinners a real treat because we got them only when my parents went out for the evening, which was a rare occurrence. Salisbury Steak was my favorite. Your version is WAY better.
I love your food channel you explain why things need to be done and how it will change the flavor, other food channel just show you how to cook they dnt tell you why you are doing certain things.👍👍👍
One thing I do to add a punch of flavor to homemade burgers and Salisbury steaks is add powdered beef bullion (not cubes) to the meat mixture. It adds more flavor and help retain the moisture.
I have seen more and more people actually use what I have done for decades when it comes to gravy and this is a good thing. People can use wine in a gravy, but instead I use Caramelized Onions and Mustard powder. it creates the same flavor. I dont know why this works but it does,
Excellent recipe! Just made it. I should've used less broth and more water because the sauce turned out super rich. But quite delicious. Browning the mushrooms is a must!
Surprised My Wife tonight with the recipe. I did it exactly how you did right down to the measurements and it turned out amazing I just didn’t put in the marmite didn’t have any. Lol but thank you. I follow all your recipes. They’re absolutely amazing.
@@clorenger I'm honestly not sure. I've always skipped roux in recipes and just accepted a thinner soup/stew/sauce and/or tried to reduce more to make up for it a bit. I know that wouldn't be acceptable to most, but I have a very sensitive gut, so alternatives like corn, rice, or nut-based flours don't work for me either.
The way y'all described the hungry man stuff is spot on imo. I'm still traumatized by being forced to eat those on rare occasions. That was over 45 years ago. Yours looks & sounds amazing though 😋
Love love love Salisbury steak. This should be a great improvement over the frozen stuff. We still occasionally get the frozen ones and use them for sandwiches
Sonny, I have to say if you're ever bored of cooking, you could be an Ad spokesman here and there ! I hate sponser obligations because they are usually really boring, but you are genuinely interested in the products! 😊
One of my favorite meals. Yours looks delicious! Sometimes I don't have time to cook for myself and the Hungry Man has to stand duty. I've found that cooking them in a conventional oven per the instructions ( 350 for 45 minutes) is way better. Cut slits in the tops of meat and veggies, remove plastic from the nasty brownie and throw away, then when done, butter and season the beans and mashed potatoes. Not a 5 star meal but better than a handful of saltines. I'm trying your recipe this weekend!
Dude you are my favorite guy on UA-cam. Seriously love and agree with everyone of your takes on these dishes ….. all this and martial arts. Rock on bro 0:42
I'm a vegetarian, here just cause your cooking is too perfect. Idk what I'll do but I'm using this information. You're the type of chef I just want to see birth meal after meal for the better than Food Network comforting content of your performing your craft. Thank you
I love Salisbury steak, my mom would make it form scratch at home. Bought a frozen one one time as a teenager, it was okay it just wasn’t what I expected. Been cooking my own ever since and never looked back to frozen.
FYI - I bought the butane stovetop that he's using and I love it. Sooo much more control over the temp than say a coleman or the like that you would buy from walmart. Its pricey but worth it. And PS - you do not have to use their branded butane refills as they state in the manual. Any brand will work fine.
My 12 year old son had the same microwave Salisbury steak a few nights ago. He too, gave it a 5/10. I figured we'd give this a try. It was a lot of extra steps for 'Ok'.
It’s really nice seeing Marcus open up man. Honestly, his camera presence is so much better. Also, WHAT YOU THINK OF UFC 297?! Strickland 3-2 for me 1, 2 and 5 him.
Mushrooms are a necessity for me. The frozen types never seem to include them, but I've never tried Hungry man. I like Stauffer's with the mac and cheese in a pinch. Still no Mushrooms 😢, but their mac and cheese isn't bad! This, and swedish meatballs are cozy winter comfort food to me! Thanks, Sonny! Homemade is everything ❤
Salisbury steak, yes! I haven't had one in years, this hits me right in the nostalgia. Also, I finally made the rosemary salt and now I'm an addict! Thanks to you, my sodium intake has probably gone up 30%!
Okay...I gave this a whirl tonight and it turned out fairly well. However...baking the patties for 10 minutes and broiling for 5 wasn't nearly enough to cook them through. Next time I'll bake them for at least 20 minutes. Also, rather than milk I used V8 juice [wife has a lactose problem] and the patties barely held together...perhaps they needed more breadcrumbs. I used ghee and lactose-free butter in the pan and that worked okay. I used boullion cubes for beef broth...next time I'll get the proper stuff. Using the cubes made the gravy more salty than we would prefer, but not too much. All in all it was a positive experience, and I'll do better next time. Thanks for this...that mushroom and onion gravy will work on all kinds of things. I'm thinking meatloaf...
I make homemade Salisbury steak at least once a month. I just grill up a quality 80/20 burger patty with salt, pepper, onion powder. My gravy I make with corn starch vs flour and finish with a splash of sherry as the gravy is finishing up. Nothing like homemade if you like Salisbury steak.
You're the only big UA-camr that actually reads our comments and corrects your pronunciation of Worcestershire sauce 🥰 Could you do a video where you hug the fridge please instead of kicking it all the time?

I had a Hungry Man ten years ago and the one in this show looks nothing like it. The sauce is just like jello in this video. Before it was a big gooey but it was clearly a thick sauce.

The fried chicken TV dinners were great.
Absolutely! Nothing today even comes close to how good things were back then.

Wrong. Hotdogs were invented in 1936 by Larry Hotdogs, when he accidentally dropped a bag of prize-winning pig buttholes into his Dick Shaper Machine.
I have found about 1/2 cup of Dry Red Wine works excellently in it too to take it to the next level!
I love your food channel you explain why things need to be done and how it will change the flavor, other food channel just show you how to cook they dnt tell you why you are doing certain things.👍👍👍
The Joy Of Cooking (Bible) Salisbury Steak recipe is amazing. I’d love to see you put some of the recipes from that famous book to the test!
Just ordered Marmite from Amazon. Can't wait to use it in my cooking.
My grandma just made Salisbury steak when I had home for Christmas! It was so good. Looks very similar to her recipe.
You are the best youtube chef. I hope this stuff is really lucrative for you. Inspiration for me as a cook
One thing I do to add a punch of flavor to homemade burgers and Salisbury steaks is add powdered beef bullion (not cubes) to the meat mixture. It adds more flavor and help retain the moisture.
Good idea.
when you add concentrated beef (essence) to your beef
lol cx
unironically good idea though 😭
use the maggi version. it finally made it to my local latino grocery stores after years of begging people to stock it and its magical
@@axdambient i love maggi sm omg 😭
I use beef base and sometimes a little demi glace.
I love my Made In nonstick pans too. They really are amazing pans. And I love that they’re made in the USA.
I like that you give recipe instructions in a clear and entertaining way. Cheers!
I’m definitely trying a version of this. We don’t do bread crumbs so maybe I’ll grind up some mushrooms in their place. Thank you!!
We use pulverized pork cracklings as bread crumbs because I have Celiac!
@@faeleaf174 What would be a good replacement for the flour in the sauce (roux). Went GF in 1992 and have never gone back.
I used to buy the TV dinners many years back. I remember this dish, and it was delicious. The brownie was always a treat.
The way y'all described the hungry man stuff is spot on imo.
I'm still traumatized by being forced to eat those on rare occasions. That was over 45 years ago.
Yours looks & sounds amazing though 😋
I never not gave Salisbury steak a chance. That was my favorite banquet frozen meal. There's a special place in my heart for it
Love love love Salisbury steak.
Oh man, your version looks great! Nothing beats homemade!
Yep, French Onion Gravy and Hamburger Patties. Can't go wrong.
Dude you are my favorite guy on UA-cam. Seriously love and agree with everyone of your takes on these dishes ….. all this and martial arts. Rock on bro 0:42
What pan are you using for this?
Can’t wait to try this recipe. My wife is in love with you and Sergeant Gilbert!
My takeaway from this? The line “you’re whole life is going to work out don’t worry about it” much needed 🙏
I'm a vegetarian, here just cause your cooking is too perfect. Idk what I'll do but I'm using this information. You're the type of chef I just want to see birth meal after meal for the better than Food Network comforting content of your performing your craft. Thank you
That poor fucking fridge. LMFAOOOOOOOO
Always a great day when Sonny drops a new video. Always a good time.
Tried this. Followed as to-the-letter as I could and it was a winner. Thanks Sonny. Keep the hits comin’!
My 12 year old son had the same microwave Salisbury steak a few nights ago. He too, gave it a 5/10. I figured we'd give this a try. It was a lot of extra steps for 'Ok'.
Marcus makes these videos great! Love to see the lgtqb+ representation!
Holy smokes. I just made this for dinner tonight, and it was amazing!!!!! We're adding it to our recipe list!!
I love this and will be cooking it soon. I appreciate the idea of browning patties in oven, I'll have to give that a try. Cheers!
It’s really nice seeing Marcus open up man. Honestly, his camera presence is so much better. Also, WHAT YOU THINK OF UFC 297?! Strickland 3-2 for me 1, 2 and 5 him.
The breadcrumb, milk and egg mix is called a panade, at least according to ATK. I like the idea of baking the patties instead of frying them.
Homemade is everything ❤
living in South Louisiana my grandmother used a milk chocolate roux for her Salisbury Steak's gravy and it was the bomb.
Salisbury steak, yes! I haven't had one in years, this hits me right in the nostalgia. Also, I finally made the rosemary salt and now I'm an addict! Thanks to you, my sodium intake has probably gone up 30%!
Dude, please put links in the description when you say you will! Thank you 🙏🙏 love your content!!
Thanks Sonny now I’m salivating uncontrollably and craving this heavy!
I did salisbury steaks with my nephew and he liked them much more than I expected he would!!
I just had a conversation with a friend about never having homemade Salisbury steak. Totally going to make this. Thanks
You don't want them fully cooked because you'll finish cooking them in the sauce.
@@river7874 Maybe. At 8:10 Sonny says the patties will be cooked through.
I just made this tonight, everybody loved it! Thanks dude, you can cook.
Whatsthishersauce
Made this for dinner tonight, and it is awesome. Everyone loved it.
