I genuinely think that Bungie is starting to set the stage for another big bad, the witness is still some corporeal being however powerful it is. Nezarec, capable of transcending death and predating the collapse, might be some eldritch being far beyond what we understand. 'Fealty' to the Witness might simply just have been a way to spread pain and suffering, and now that we're challenging that status quo he seeks to spread his influence in other ways.
The Witness has been pulling strings from the other side of our galaxy I wouldn't count him out yet. I think a lot of people also fail to understand that Nezarec's influence wasn't that far reaching until the traveler blasted him with light and it is doubtful that the traveler would blast him again so I really do think he is done for now barring any future Osiris shenanigans involving Nezarec and his acolytes. Not to mention Nezarec's goals are very simple compared to what we know about the Witness as all Nezarec seems to want is to sow discourse and accumulate power which doesn't make for a great central antagonist because it's been written into oblivion to the point of being cliché. Also what makes you think that the Witness doesn't have similar if not greater incorporeal qualities to Nezarec bc they even show during the campaign it is talking with Calus in his mind. I think it's a giant leap to say the Witness "is still some corporeal being" bc we don't even know that much as we have yet to see anything in the universe physically interact with it.
They better have good writing, the reason LOTR is famous is because there's so much lore and insane things that happened, yet the main story focuses on the little people, and it's good when written very deep.
One thing you don't seem to mention is that Nezarec doesn't seem to have any connection with his body parts - during the raid he asks if we know anything about where they are. So I guess all of their dark effects are just automatic? Or is Nezarec somehow split, each part holding a seperate mind?
Just because he doesn't know the location of the body parts doesn't mean he isn't connected to them it could be that they just enable him to influence the minds of those near the body parts.
@@magikcarpet1360 You can look up the dialouge, I think it's said during the jumping puzzle before planets. It's not just that he doesn't know where they are - he has no idea what happend to them at all, who has them, etc.
That last conclusion of fear resonates with me. I once was scared out of my mind by a videogame I now know to be Fade to Black, a PSX game, a sequel to flashback. I've been fascinated by that game since childhood, mostly because it terrified me for days with its 3D uncanny death cinematics and because I didn't understand english.
15:33 ...I haven't ever felt a trace of a grim fascination like that, maybe since I was a kid... I don't understand it personally. And I thought Briar just thought "yes" because he preferred feeling Nezarec's power more than being blind.
When you talked about how people can be unvelievably affraid of spiders and sharks but still be curious about them.....well I felt that on a personal level. I am a girl who has a really bad case of Arachnophobia, yet I can't help but be fascinated by those eight-legged terrors, they are litterally one of my favourite animals and even though I am deeply affraid of them, when I encounter one in my house or in the wild, I always observe them as much as I can, sometimes even physically interacting with them if I don't have any other method of catching them when I spot one crawling around in my house. It is a terrifying experience, and my hands usually shake when I catch them by hand, but I still take my time with observing them, to see if they have all of their legs and trying to figure out what species they might be, ect. I have a hobby of studying spiders, and I allways seek to learn more about them, and now that I write about it it's starting to become not just a fascination but an obsession with these creatures that I am still deeply affraid of. So yeah my relationship with my intense fear of spiders and, well, spiders themselves....is kind of a weird one, and many people told me that I'm crazy for being obsessed with creatures that give me nightmares. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. I see this curyosity and obsession with spiders as a way of my mind trying to cope with my intense fear of them by trying to know and understand them better in order to try and elliminate of lessen the fear that I have towards these creepy crawlies. And honestly I think it is working, since I am definitely way less affraid of spiders now, than I was before I started to learn more about them, though this doesn't mean that I don't get completely creeped out by them when I suddenly see one appear out of nowhere near me, but I don't react to them in an over the top "OH S**T THERE'S A SPIDER! RUUUN!!" way, as I used to do back before my curiosity and fascination with spiders was a thing in my life. So yeah. Sorry for the long comment, and for if my english is bad for it is not my mother language anf it's quite late here where I'm from and I am tired as heck, but I felt like I needed to try and write down this comment because what you said was so heckin relatable, and I just had to comment. But I'll end it here since this comment is getting waay longer than I intended it to be, so yeah, thank you again for what you're doing and keep up the good work!
this lore is so interesting that it just makes me sad that we didnt get a lore that actually focused on Nezarecs strength in nightmares. Instead we got a raid that, while visually cool, didnt really have anything to do with nezarec. it could have been any disciple at the end of it
Nezarec is definitely badass in his own way, but there is something that’s just so special about Rhulk and his lore that makes him so much more interesting
what ive slowly realised is that byf has turned to the support darkside from solar warlock healing to void titan overshield i knew 3 yeets was a bad idea
15:33 That's exactly why I'm here. Anything to do with the eyes makes me squeamish, yet I find myself morbidly curious about those particular scenes in horror films, and literature such as these pieces.
A lot of this lore and the way they’re establishing the dynamics between Nezarec and his victims reminds me a lot of extremely abusive and manipulative relationships - there’s an inherent fear within an abusive relationship and a twisted lack of purpose or belonging after leaving them. They both leave people empty and full of self doubt, and damage (in every form).
I was definitely confused initially, when I saw the name Briar come up I had wondered if they were the same as the Cloud Strider named Briar, guess there are two who picked that name up.
Love how we're learning about Nezarec. The more we learn the more I think he's not dead and the more I worry about Osiris. The Whispers told Mithrax what to do, and we can only assume that was Nezarec himself. And I doubt the acolytes of Nezarec aren't aware of how Osiris woke up 🤔
I really hope they do something with the acolytes of Nezarec in the future. I think it's really cool to see a sect of humanity devoted to the darkness for a change.
Nezarec: "Do you enjoy hearing the final screams of your enemies" *war flashbacks to my ear drums bursting every time Omnigul opened her mouth* If they aren't Hive. Then yes.
As much as I have always loved the Lore of the Destiny universe, the year of Witch Queen (year 5?) managed to put so much in-game in a satisfying way. So far, the start of Lightfall feels like it has regressed back to the ways of old with great lore that needs to be found in lore entries of weapons, armor. The raid lore proves that the writers are still there, but the application of it is somehow off again, which is sad. The lore explained in these acolyte entries is great, but you do not feel Nezarecs presence in the same way in the raid. The balance between telling and showing is completely off so far and the structuring of how they tell the story is off. I know they can do it. They proved it last year, and I really hope we get back there again sooner, rather than later. In the meanwhile, I will continue to devour Byf videos to get more context :D
This is my personal wish as a tribute to Lance reddick where bungie gives us an exotic weapon but the exotic weapon is the assault rifle zavala used it that story of zavala video awhile back to give to us to use and have fun with they could even call it Lance's rifle the name of the npc character who had the gun before zavala and it has a in game backstory about Lance That would be an insanely cool idea to honor his legacy in game
Nezarec really is puzzling. He's an enemy we won't ever conventionally defeat. If you take him seriously, show any respect for his power and the terror he inflicts, you only feed him and perpetuate everything he embodies. And if you ignore him or try to hide your fear, he possesses immense power beyond the realm of fear and nightmare. It's hard to say of we'll ever truly be rid of him.
I have a question if anyone could answer. Since nezzy got accidentally resurrected by the light does this mean they can be resurrected again by a ghost?
Do I enjoy hearing the final screams of my enemies? Does the ether hiss of a vandal when the head pops count??? If so, yes... Don't tell misraaks, we're going for drinks later...
Quick disclaimer this is me trying to put the pieces together, and thought Id share what I fond, from what I could gather things are starting to make even more sense with lightfall now out. Ok this is essentially going to be about why I have reason to believe that Savathun is vital to learning more about the witness. 1. The first thing That I want to bring up is the wall of reflection and Savathun's 2 truths 2 lies game. We have to remember that Savathun is the hive god of lies, and trickery. I feel that it is reasonable to believe that Savathun's lies could be truths and the truths lies, or even all be true, or all lies. Grant it. I know that some of the things that she has said turned out to be true. The thing that she says about the Witness giving Mars back to us, but Io, Mercury, and Titan are in her care is what we want to look at again. 2. I think Savathun does have our missing planet and moons. Through sources it heavily suggests that we are going back to titan In season of the deep. And Bungie has confirmed in a TWAB that we will be learning more about the Vail and the Witness in the coming seasons.
3. I believe the following three seasons after season of defiance, will take place on Titan, Mercury, and Io as when they do return they most definitely will have those same temporal scare that we see on mars. Like when Mars came back we learned that the witness placed the relic on Mars because they were looking for something about Rasputin and we know how that turned out. 4. The reason why I think Savathun does have the planet, and moons is because I don't think the Witness would just give them back if we could learn something from them. For example we now know that the Witness is trying to cover its tracks when we had entered the Black Garden to kill that Vex mind and the taken were sent in to clean up after the witness. The planets have information we must uncover, we have to revive Savathun's, and make a kind of deal with her because I think she knows more than what she's already told us. 5. We now know that Savathun was the one who killed Nezarec, and hid the vail on Neptune, how did She kill him. We actually kind of know how in a way. In season of the haunted we learned after we had killed Savathun Eris conducted an autopsy on Savathun's body and found hive magic that allowed us to properly combat the nightmares on the Leviathan. She played the long con against the Witness, just like she did to us. 6. Also I've read some of the Root of Nightmares lores books, and it's funny cause it's not About Nezarec it's about Savathun. Byf has even mentioned that as of yet we cannot collect all the entries. The final two entries I believe he said, there has got to be something juicy that Bungie doesn't want us to know yet.
7. In conclusion we need Savathun, and anything she knows, as well as we need to get our missing plant ,and moons back if we want to defeat the Witness.
I don't think the person mentioned is Mykel. More likely one of his ancestors. If Briar was a warlord and he lost his ghost during the dark ages, he would have died from aging long ago. And in one of your other videos on this topic you said you belive Mykel was only made an acolyte recently, or at least not more than a few decades ago.
To be fair, we don't know when mykel lived. In the entry where his mom/dad wakes him up on his 18th birthday to teach him about nezarec, it mentions that their house has sconces on the walls, something you would put a torch in. If they don't have electricity, they probably don't live in the city, so unless they're people out in the wilds who haven't made it to the city, then those events could have been during the dark age
@@peteraustin9057 True. I would have thought so too but if it wasn't for Byf's comment about Mykel becoming a memeber recently. That was just speculation too though so you may be right.
Is it possible that Nezerec has his own logic that exist somehow along side sword logic? A nightmare logic? He's not the blade of the final shape but maybe he's the blade's song when it is drawn. Not the void itself but the shape of it, so we know how empty it truly is. It seems a few weapons we have crafted emulate a nightmare power source such as Red death and Bad Juju. Decorated and empowered with marks and items that brought fear and pain. Failed attempts at weapons of sorrow... or maybe we did it wrong and made weapons of nightmares.
I'm super curious if any/all of the acolytes are still alive in game. Maybe we need to put an end to them in a future season, will we kill their leader? A human's blood on our hands?
I doubt that if they are out there that they are capable combatants bc from the lore they seem to operate in the shadows to even further increase the fear around both their organization and Nezarec. That being said I really hope they end up doing something with Osiris and the acolytes because there is so much potential there.
Of Hatred Nezarec is a pre-Golden Age text right? Could there be a connection between Him, Clovis using the Darkness to help create the Exo, and the “Dreams/Nightmares” the Exo have of killing the people they know to get to the Crypt
It seems nezerac a influence was greatest during the dark age. Essentially right after the collapse. Seems he didn’t die right away. It took the fallen cutting him apart to reduce his influence to near nothing by the time we were resurrected.
Nezarec is so creepy. Like literally a creep. He’s unnerving and uncomfortable with his sounds of satisfaction and breathiness with everything he says. He’s the ultimate sadist in every way.
No way this was the last time we see Nezerec. Weather it be a full season around him or him taking his true form in final shape without the touch of the light from the traveler.
The problem is that Nezarec's influence was very strong at that time. even broken into tiny Phylacteries his power was strong, the issue, those pieces are gone though, Distilled and void of darkness and peracasual energy. the only thing left that REMOTELY had any power, was his head, it's why Nezarec was like "i can't feel my body parts anymore" and that's why, because they've been CONSUMED. Nezarec is not a threat, atleast, not anymore. could he become one in the future, time will tell, however, he was Shunned by both darkness AND light thus his power is VERY limited now.
now that we know darkness subclasses are based on thoughts, feelings, and emotions, bungie is suspiciously going very in depth about fear in recent lore 🧐
So, I have an idea of who/what nezarec may have betrayed. His title is "final god of pain". Potentially, there may have been more of them to which nezarec slaughtered or killed them to cause all tribunes and offerings to these gods be left to him. Just an idea and probably wrong.
It's amazing how destiny has this much lore behind it but it never shows in the game. Imagine hearing about these guys in the campaign and seeing this in cutscenes. All we got was the veil which we know nothing about.
I get the very distinct feeling that Nezarec was heavily inspired by Lovecraftian cults and mythos. The insane cults worshipping fear and terror, the inescapable presence once exposed to the central figure.
Savathun and her Ghost can be killed and her memory, her legacy of lies and deceit would die off generations later. Nezarec… as long as fear, pain, and death exist, so does he. How could would possibly hope to permanently erase Nezarec’s legacy, his spirit, his very memory? When he is ingrained across the cosmos, as being synonymous with fear itself? Savathun would eventually fade from all memory, die forgotten, how could we hope to kill one which lives on in the minds and fearful memories of billions? Nezarec’s spirit would continue to live on after death, while Savathun would meet the very end she’d feared as a child, and would end.
The lore of Briar is both fascinating and terrifying. I think that comparison between Nezarec and Nyarlathotep is growing more and more apt.
So the Witness can subjugate an Eldritch horror beyond my light. Great. Glad I saw his face.

6:41 oh so THATS what Nezzy meant by replacing ones shadow
Im gonna be honest, I'm more interested in the acolytes of Nerzarec than Nerarec himself.
This is fair, their experiences with Nezarec are much more compelling Lovecraftian horror wise
They better have good writing, the reason LOTR is famous is because there's so much lore and insane things that happened, yet the main story focuses on the little people, and it's good when written very deep.
You're so disinterested in him that you somehow spelt his name wrong on both attempts, pretty impressive stuff 😂😂😂😂😂

You can look up the dialouge, I think it's said during the jumping puzzle before planets.
It's not just that he doesn't know where they are - he has no idea what happend to them at all, who has them, etc.
@@XIIthehangedmanXII Perhaps they work similar to the nightmares in that they act like echoes of him from the past carrying on his will.
Nezarec in Lore *swole* Nezarec in game *smooth round “normal”Spongebob*
The acolytes lore is top shelf. I’m not even mad about the campaign story anymore. ❤
You can not say destiny dose not have some horror elements. It's all here in the lore. I love it..
Love your videos by the way, your chanel is one of my favourite chanels on UA-cam since the lore of Destiny is kind of a second obsession of mine, and your videos are just the absolute best on this topic, the delivery of storytelling, the way you read the loretabs, everything about your videos is just ✨CHEF'S KISS✨ perfect!
You and your editor/editors are doing a really great job at making these videos and I thank you for doing what you do, these videos are some if not the absolute best videos on UA-cam, when it comes to Destiny lore.
So yeah, keep up the good work, and I wish you and your team only the best!
And yeah I know I'm kind of really late with this comment and it probably won't be read but I just had to write this down.
But I'll end it here since this comment is getting waay longer than I intended it to be, so yeah, thank you again for what you're doing and keep up the good work!
Making Roman time to watch more byf
this lore is so interesting that it just makes me sad that we didnt get a lore that actually focused on Nezarecs strength in nightmares. Instead we got a raid that, while visually cool, didnt really have anything to do with nezarec. it could have been any disciple at the end of it
I feel though that he’s a character that’s actually better served by being shrouded in mystery. He’s got the whole lovecraft thing going on.
Lol all we got was a glorified tormentor when we fought him
Nezarec is definitely badass in his own way, but there is something that’s just so special about Rhulk and his lore that makes him so much more interesting
Rhulk is more relatable. He also actually has an origin story unlike “the final god of pain.” The story of rhulk is one of struggle and hopelessness.
I don't know. Rhulk was just a guy that doomed his own planet. Then countless others. And eventually got killed because of his pride.
Nezarec , God of Minor Discomfort
Lore = OMG
Gameplay = some shots and he is dead
This is the scariest lore yet, imo. Crazy stuff!
what ive slowly realised is that byf has turned to the support darkside from solar warlock healing to void titan overshield i knew 3 yeets was a bad idea
Gotta say I am loving the nezarec lore. This stuff is crazy
Love your content byf!

Thanks for the great hard work! Very haunting.
I love the intro music
Nezarec: "Do you enjoy hearing the final screams of your enemies"

If they aren't Hive.
Synobites and hell razer is the vibes I get. Look into it to see if there is sorce material like the othere video with cthulu

Very Event Horizon. "Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see."
…You will fear nothing. And nothing will not fear you…
Adrenaline is addictive... Fear and pain produce it.
I feel like the only way we could truly defeat him is if we completely erase his existence
They had huge.... Tracts of land.
This explains why some people love horror movies.
Oh so I forgot to say but I feel the comparison is apt the book “of hated nezarec is described very similarly to the necronomicon ex mortis
Nezarec is basically just “My death was… greatly exaggerated”
Anyone else confused about an apparent Cloud Strider named Briar from the chest armor of the Thunderhead set?
I have a question if anyone could answer. Since nezzy got accidentally resurrected by the light does this mean they can be resurrected again by a ghost?
No. Since he wasn't given the light via a Ghost, he doesn't have the ability to resurrect.

This dude is just Vaati for destiny lore… FUCK YEAH
I'm waiting for the day that Taniks becomes an Acolyte of Nezarec. They'd be homies for life (death?)😊
Damn that’s intense, all I had to do was ad clear
I'm super curious if any/all of the acolytes are still alive in game. Maybe we need to put an end to them in a future season, will we kill their leader? A human's blood on our hands?
I doubt that if they are out there that they are capable combatants bc from the lore they seem to operate in the shadows to even further increase the fear around both their organization and Nezarec. That being said I really hope they end up doing something with Osiris and the acolytes because there is so much potential there.
Mykal is pulling a Nick Fury and assembling his Avengers

Ay yo, a M.A.G. style game with Iron Lords, WARLORDS, and light bearers?
Byf really just pulled a "Next time on Dragon Ball Z!"
Is there any lore about how different races in game feel about fighting against and with taken like them?
The problem is that Nezarec's influence was very strong at that time. even broken into tiny Phylacteries his power was strong, the issue, those pieces are gone though, Distilled and void of darkness and peracasual energy. the only thing left that REMOTELY had any power, was his head, it's why Nezarec was like "i can't feel my body parts anymore" and that's why, because they've been CONSUMED. Nezarec is not a threat, atleast, not anymore. could he become one in the future, time will tell, however, he was Shunned by both darkness AND light thus his power is VERY limited now.
Byf, do you have a Spotify show? I'd love to be able to listen to your lore reviews on the go.
RAISINS ON THE SURFACE OF MY MIND!
now that we know darkness subclasses are based on thoughts, feelings, and emotions, bungie is suspiciously going very in depth about fear in recent lore 🧐
not sure if its 'grim fascination' or just straight up '(dis-)comfort zone'
So, I have an idea of who/what nezarec may have betrayed.
His title is "final god of pain". Potentially, there may have been more of them to which nezarec slaughtered or killed them to cause all tribunes and offerings to these gods be left to him. Just an idea and probably wrong.
It's amazing how destiny has this much lore behind it but it never shows in the game. Imagine hearing about these guys in the campaign and seeing this in cutscenes. All we got was the veil which we know nothing about.
I wonder if theres ever gonna be another cinematic movie, I think one on the Cabal and especially Calus would be awesome imo lol
Anyone else curious about Byf's void Titan buidl?!
This whole expansion has been a ruse for us to drop our guard and get distracted, worried about the wrong things and how "easy" he was... its a TRAP!
The Lance of Reddick
