    WOw, that must run cool, I have a late 2012 with 8GB DDR3 and it does the job well, I want the 2017.

    Thank you for doing this review. I am in the market for an iMac myself and I've been looking at this model. This seems like the sweet spot. If 8 GB of ram is working for you, then it works. It can always be professionally upgraded later and you can still keep the machine for years to come. Sounds like a winner to me. The only thing I would have done different is get the 256 GB ssd and just add an external ssd to hold all my videos and photos.

    The ram is non user upgradable, only the 27 inch is. Also, you should of got an SSD model, this would make your Mac feel like a speed demon. You still have time to return it!!!! Remember you will have this machine for years!!!!

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому +12

      That's a really good point. Of course swapping to an SSD, a 27", and 16+GB of RAM puts the total well over $2k, where this was $1500. Might be tempting to go for the baseline 27" with 8GB of RAM so I can upgrade it myself later

    • @DotShaddy
      @DotShaddy 7 років тому +3

      Jordan Keyes How about this spec: www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/imac?product=MNE02LL/A&step=config#
      It's under $2k and it gives you more ram and the smallest SSD. You can easily add several terabytes of external HD with all those back ports.
      And when it comes to wait times to be delivered. I would rather wait 2 weeks and be a happy bunny for the next 3 plus years.
      BTW, I'm from England so I have no idea how tax works in your state. So please forgive my myopic opinion.

    • @DotShaddy
      @DotShaddy 7 років тому +2

      Oh sorry, the link did not keep my selections. I picked the 16 ram option and the 256 gb SSD for the price of $1800

    • @AntoineLamarre
      @AntoineLamarre 7 років тому

      if the inside is anything like the last iMac models you can upgrade the RAM yourself. And if you chose the Fusion drive you can put a bigger HDD and a bigger SSD if you know what you are doing, you just need to remove the screen and perform an almost complete disassembly and this will void the warranty so that's why apple says it's "non user upgradeable".

    • @Riceordie
      @Riceordie 7 років тому +4

      Isn't it possible to just buy an external SSD and just install the OS from there and choose the SSD as a startup disk? I got a 1 TB fusion drive and you're like the 1000000 comment i read and feel bad about my poor decision at the time that i bought my 27" imac.

    Purchased this exact same model and specs refurbished for $250.00 cheaper. So I received mine for the price of their base model. This is our 3rd Apple from their refurbished section...all come in the exact same manner and box except on the box in very light grey it says "REFURBISHED", with the same warranty. I'm typing this on an 3 year old refurbished MacBook Pro purchased from them and my son uses an Ipad. You will never notice the difference.

    After you finish Migration Assistant can you sync an iOS device on either device? MacBook or iMac or only just one? Given the iTunes Library is the same. Gotta love how easy it is to migrate apps and documents from Mac-to-Mac.
    Quick question: Why not get a Mac Mini instead?
    Aside from the USB Type-C, the iMac and Mac Mini are almost the same. The Mini is much cheaper and it can be used on any aftermarket monitor/TV.

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому +2

      if Apple had put out new Mac Mini's, I might have... but the previous one was last updated in 2014, and the dual core chips in them are about half the power of the one in this iMac.

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому

      Might do just that... from early impressions, the MBP actually renders slightly faster for 1080p60! Thinking the 1Tb Fusion drive must be a lot slower than the 512Gb SSD in my MBP.

    I want to get this but I think I will wait a little bit more for a design refresh. I would be surprised if they don't update the design before 2020. While the iMac still looks nice it is starting to look dated with those thick bezels. Glad to see they finally added some kind of dedicated graphics

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому +2

      I can definitely agree about the bezels, it's a bit of a bummer.

    • @zactogan8903
      @zactogan8903 7 років тому

      But we are now accustomed to thin bezels due to all the flat screen TV's out there. My monitor has large bezels and its still fine. I don't mind bezels, it gives a border so you're less distracted of whats behind it. Good video.

      27" was available, but for my small desk area, it's just a bit overwhelming. I've been editing on a 13" MBP for months now, so 21.5" is quite a step up without being too big. Of course from the other comments, I'm kinda tempted to swap out for the 27" just to get the easily upgradeable memory...

    I'd like to know how long does it take to boot the computer with the 1TB fusion drive? I'm afraid it'd be quite long since there's merely 32GB SSD storage there. Is it enough for exporting Final Cut Pro video? I'm afraid the bottle neck will be the slow writing speed of the HDD there.

    Why is Apple doing Fusion Drives in 2017.
    Everything should be SSD.

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 7 років тому +1

      The fusion drive would be ok if it was the absolute base model. That there's pure HDD iMacs after the refresh is the infuriating part. And 32GB for the FD NAND seems a bit sparse, I had hoped it would double up this gen.

    • @JordanKeyes

      You can, as long as you have either a USB-C to HDMI adapter, or a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, and a monitor that accepts those things.

      Possibly! For the most part it's web browsers and FCPx. Honestly, if it weren't for video editing, I could probably survive with a Chromebook.

    iMac Retina 4K 21.5-inch, 2017, Intel Core i5 3,4GHz, 8Gb 2400MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro 560 4096Mb можно ли сделать апгрейд ОЗУ с 8Gb на 64Gb?

      @JordanKeyes  4 роки тому

      Not for the 21.5" 2017 model, unless you pay Apple directly or disassemble the whole iMac. For the 27" 2017 model, there was a door on the back you could open to replace the RAM. I made a video about the 27" and I think I showed the RAM upgrade here: ua-cam.com/video/KC7ZMEF0vbM/v-deo.html

    Why 21,5".... why.... whyyyyyy?

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому +3

      For my desk size, 27" just seemed overkill, and I'm usually just editing 1080p60 footage, so 5k vs 4k doesn't make a huge difference for what I do.

      A user can't (easily), no. Taking it to the Apple store, they can.

      Jiraqa if you’re gonna be downloading a lot of stuff and making videos, etc go with the ssd if you’re doing basic occasional downloads, etc go with the cheaper option.

    I got a 27" retina iMac late 2015 with 3,2 GHz i5 processor and Radeon R9M390 2GB.. Is your iMac 4k faster than mine? I don't know a lot about specs but i want the fastest and i am considering selling my 5k imac to a friend to get the 2017 version. Nice video btw, i have no idea why i just stumbled on you now but i'm definitely subscribing!

    Hi Jordan - Great video. I just subscribed ! You got the best one :)
    One question before I go to the store and pick one of these babies up:- how did you do the migration from your MacBook Pro? Wired link or via wifi? I just want to make sure I have all the kit to set it up when I get home .. I also have a MacBook Pro ..

    • @JordanKeyes
      @JordanKeyes  7 років тому

      When I was setting the iMac up, it asked if I wanted to migrate, and ran the assistant for me. Here's an article with more info: support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350
      You can do it over wifi or ethernet, or with the two plugged into each other if you want. I just did wifi.
