    For me the 5k was worth it. I used to get tension headaches fairly frequently and I thought it was my ergonomics, but after using the 5k iMac for a few months, I haven't had a single tension headache. (I work from home on the computer for 8-10 hours a day). I realized it must have been the average display I was using before. Most of us geeks agonize about specs like SSDs, RAM, and CPU, but don't overlook how good this screen really is. It's what you're staring at for a good portion of your life. Don't underestimate how how that affects you. I can barely look at my previous monitor now that I've been using the 5k retina iMac.
    Also, I picked up one of the first refurbs in the Apple store. Literally, the first day they had 5k iMacs in the refurb section I bought mine. I did have a quick, barely noticeable flicker in the screen at a regular interval, but all it needed was graphics driver update. After I installed the newer driver from ATI, I've had no problems whatsoever. I got applecare just in case though.

    It's fantastic with a 4K video camera for your. I use a 4K video camera and i have recorded 4K video at 100 MB/s and 60/s when a 23 minute video is 18 GB in size. It looks fantastic when playing 4K video before the video get uploaded to UA-cam or for something else.

    You didnt make the pricing clear enough..other companies such as dell who make 4k displays sell their monitors at $2500, these are just the displays not a desktop pc, you will need to buy a separate PC to go with that 5k display. But with the iMac you get a full pc and a 5k monitor with the same price.

    • @Hoerkelis
      @Hoerkelis 9 років тому +1

      But you cant compare the iMac display to a professional 4K or 5K monitor.

    • @supbrotv
      @supbrotv 9 років тому +23

      Hoerkelis What the hell are you talking about? Movie studios have been using apples 2k monitor for years to edit blockbuster movies this 5k display is even better than those! Every reviewer is claiming this is the best 4k+ display in the market, even better than most 4k tvs.

    • @supbrotv

    Just opened up my new baby: Base 5k Retina except I traded the 1T Fusion for a 250GB SSD on the theory that one less moving part to break and with thunderbolt I can hook up an external HD and still be wicked fast. Going to hook up my older 30" CinemaDisplay to have some serious desktop real estate!

    Great comparison of the Apple 5k iMac and the regular iMac. I decided to get the regular iMac and instead of the 5k iMac and spent the extra money on upgrades. Also the regular iMac can be used, down the road, as a monitor for a newer iMac or Mac Pro computer but from what I understand the 5k iMac cannot, that was another reason for my decision to by the regular iMac computer.

    Its interesting, I compared the 27in retina to the 2013 iMac, which is the one I have, and it all depends on how close you are to the screen. if you are fairly close to the screen, you'll see a HUGE difference. But where I have my iMac sitting on my desk, if I'm in my chair, and I reach straight towards the machine, the tips of my fingers are about 5-6in away from it, and from that distance I couldn't tell a difference at the store.

    Considering that I am at the point of upgrading my 23 inch iMac to the new 27 inch 5k iMac, this comparison report is timely and I consider it to be excellent comparison. I appreciate the comment on the comparison of Final Cut and Premiere when using the 27 inch 5k iMac when editing video. Very well done. Thank you for your obvious hard work and effort.

  • @futureboy7653
    @futureboy7653 9 років тому +2

    Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought desktop real estate was measured in actual area, not pixels. Also, much of what was shown here had very large empty spaces when not having 5+ windows on one screen. It seems that the average programs & online media layout aren't yet at the level where you would truly benefit from a 5k display.

    Thanks for an informative video. The difference in the speed between the 1 TB HDD and the 1 TB Fusion drive was good to see. As expected, the Fusion drive is much faster than the HDD but most likely still slower than an SSD only drive.
    As a developer I would like to know if text displayed on the 5k Retina iMac is is noticeably sharper and clearer than late 2013 27" iMac.. Guess a trip to the Apple store will resolve that for me.

    I apologize if you've answered this question, but which components, if any would you recommend upgrading from the factory? I do lots of photo editing and always save my work on an external hard drive. For RAM upgrade, I believe I can do that at later time for less cost. So more specifically, between the processor and the type of storage, which would be the most beneficial? Thank you!

    For picture retouching you will better go with EIZO monitors for real colour display instead of 5K false colour with just better resolution. I have iMAC 27 late 2012 and I was trying to calibrate my monitor with external expensive devises which never worked properly causing some weird colour cast.

    I was wanting to get the 5k iMac but I hear it has a lot of lagging and stuttering issues like dropping the FPS just in general using the UI. I've experienced this on the Macbook Pro retinas and don't want to deal with it on the 5k iMac. Did this 5k lag for you? If it did maybe I'll just go with the 2.5k iMac since it doesn't seem to have the lag.

    Great review,
    The advantage with the mac pro is if you will be hammering the machine all they long. Thermal issues with benefit the mac pro in terms of durability and sustained performance, particular in the Graphics card department. It's also easy to update in the future. In the other hand if I was about to buy a mac pro I will wait for V3 Xeons to roll, and with a little luck a W9100 derived graphics.

I do detest these trolls and self-opinionated ex-sperts. If you have not owned or used a Mac, your opinion is completely irrelevant and useless. Go and annoy someone else as your comments are just ridiculous and your ignorance exceedingly so. Fine video and tests, by the way. Very informative. It will help me when I purchase my NEXT Mac.

For example, he wants me to pay him back the money for it by selling my pictures, but I replied that's a really difficult thing to do. I've looked up online why would a 14 year old need an iMac and all this other stuff, I think the main reason I want an iMac is because #1 I freaking love the graphics! #2 I think I could do my essays and homework more easier without lag. And #3 I could edit pictures and edit videos and it could become a hobby. Also, I am in high school and I don't really wanna wait until college to get a 5K because I wanna already know how and what to do. I'd rather get an iMac 5k while I'm in high school so I'm already familiar with everything.

      +BRIGHT YEERZ Mate trust me on this the 5k imac does actually run slower due to all those pixels while the normal one runs nice and fast while also retaining a crisp screen.

      +Nikhil Anisetti I'm sure the iMac is still pretty fast and it also has a way better screen. I'm sure both iMacs have the same speed. Even if they don't there is not much of a difference. Plus for me newer is better because I like being up to date with things. But thanks for the reply😊

    This is one of the best computers on he market. You can do all those things you've mentioned. BUT upgrade the ram by yourself. It's half price than what Apple charges

    The New 27" 5K iMac, is actually a TFT panel and not an IPS one. Apple used TFT to accommodate the increased resolution.

      It is both IPS and TFT: IPS and TN (faster for gaming, worse colors than IPS) are both TFT technologies.

      store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac-retina It is indeed IPS.

      The heart of the display panel is the TFT, or thin film transistor. The TFT transports the electrical charge to each individual pixel. By manufacturing an oxide-based TFT more precisely than had ever been done before, we enabled each pixel to charge quicker and stay charged longer. This was essential for delivering consistent and uniform brightness from corner to corner across such a massive display with so many pixels. And it turned out to be even more energy efficient, too.

      TFT and TN are not the same. TFT is thin film transistor, TN is twisted nematic. TFT has nothing to do with TN vs IPS. Read here store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac-retina

      Depends on your computational needs and not your computational specs.

      You don't need the new iMac 5K, all you need is to add more ram, and a fast external hard drive with at least 12TB with SSD and also an external 4K monitor that's all you need.

      Who is that "you" you talk about?
      And why 12 TB? And should that 12 TB consist of SSDs?
      I just ask, as I have about 40 to 50 TB of storage capacity and do no think everyone needs more than 1 TB.

    That is a PC with average hardware for gaming but without good cooling... it will suck...

    Don't think you can dual boot with a fusion drive ?

    • @happyspaceinvader508
      @happyspaceinvader508 9 років тому

      +mat2090 You can dual boot with any kind of drive... HDD, SSD, Hybrid... it makes no difference.
      A "Fusion Drive" is not a hardware device, it's a software RAID available in OS X that combines an SSD with a regular hard disk to get a large & fast storage area. If you have an SSD and a Hard Disk in a Mac, you can create a Fusion Drive volume using Disk Utility: www.macworld.com/article/2014011/storage-drives/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html
