I love that Sal is the clear villain of this episode. It was completely unnecessary for this episode to exist, but he just wanted to torture two innocent people.
Very true. At least we choose to go through the torture.
Welcome to back issues son. Where the more ridiculous the book, the better the episode.
@@andrewfoerster6864 what made you think I'm new here? Lol
Sal is the villain of most episodes.
@@casteanpreswyn7528it’s a joke
I can't lie, I really want that poster...
No, you really don’t. Especially once you know this whole book was made out of ego.
Good news! You can have it! You just have to pry it out of Sal's cold, dead hands
Now all we need is a Captain Marvel episode to complete the U-Decide trilogy.
I cannot wait for the dramatic conclusion: From the madness of Mar-Ville, to the laziness of Ultimate Adventures, to... a cohesive comic book by Peter David.
@@AlriikRidesAgainyes!!!! I want that!
I would love that, I was a huge Captain Marvel back then and still am. I've got the first couple issues of marville and ultimate adventures
In local news, an orphan boy and three guys on a couch who thought they lost all hope loses last bit of hope they didn't think they had.
Marvel U-Decide: The gift that keeps on taking
Two things I love about back issues. Sal giving us behind the scenes stories of books like this and Sal’s quick edits, zooming in and out when something ridiculous happens.
Ethan looks like a detective, who let a case get the best of him
In a good way! I like Gruff Ethan
Oh my God. What a roast
Detective Inspector Alec Hardy sitting on the couch
Really makes him look older and more grizzled. Amazing how just a “little” facial hair can make such a big difference 😒
He’s seven days from retirement.
You know the fucked thing, there are so many little elements that could work in a book. Like the idea of adopting a kid to draft them into superhero stuff, realizing you care about them and then be willing to give it all up for them could hit really hard in a different context.
Yeah, I feel like the _bones_ of this story can work, it just needs to drop the "heehee haha funny batman parody" angle.
the costumes are pretty great too. This isnt absolutley terrible. With a reboot it could be a nice addition to the Ultimate Universe.
You know it's gonna be a good episode when Sal spends the first 20 minutes explaining why the book exists
I wonder if there are books where this kind of tumult around it's creation exists but the actual book is good. Like Apocalypse Now of comic books.
I could listen to Sal talk about the marvel drama that bill Jemas and Joe Quesada drummed up for hours. 😆😆😆
I can’t believe this ended up on the couch before ultimate X-men, but here’s hoping that they eventually get to that series
Peter David is such a legendary creator who deserves more recognition I feel like. I feel bad for his situation rn and prey for his health
If you can donate to his cause, then please do.
@daelen.cclark i donated money in the original go fund me page when he was in the hospital. My brother works at a comic store him and his family go to pretty frequently. Thats how I first heard about it
Surprised you guys didn't need hazmat suits just to touch this book.
The "context" episodes are always my favourite ones
I love when you do books that nobody remembers lmao
touche. They should do Ronin by Frank Miller.
not exactly obscure but a less talked about good book by him before he went crazy.
I wish I didn't remember it
I personally love this episode! New favorite. Weird ass book lmao
Second that ! Every year just gets better
Now they need to complete the trilogy and talk about Captain marvel from U-decide.
Hawk-Owl looks so much like the Phantom of the Paradise which is a rock opera from the 70s
Wow, the character design for The Principal is straight up Michael Douglas in Falling Down. What a book this is.
I grow to dislike Bill Jemis more and more with every single story I hear about the man, which I didn’t think was possible after the Marville episode.
Jemis and Quesada represent everything i despise about comics
@@Henderson10666They poisoned our water supply, burned our crops, and delivered a plague upon our houses!
I did not even know he had a second book? I thought marville was his one and only shot. To see a 2nd one is unbelievable
He honestly makes me appreciate Jim Shooter more than I actually did.
Yea, I’m right there with ya.
Alright! It's ultimate spider--wait a minute, that's not ultimate Spiderman!
This is what I love about Sal, half an hour of context before even getting into the actual story, I learn so much. Any other content creator will give you one or the other, but you only get both here
For every great idea Jemas and Quesada had, they had 4 terrible ideas to go along with it.
The 2000s was such an interesting time for comics. Marvel seemed like they were willing to get weird in a way that would never happen today. The results obviously varied in quality considerably but we still got some amazing stuff in that era.
The 2000's as a whole were like that. Especially 2006.
Hawkowl Beyond! Hawkowl '66! Hawkowl's evil opposite Eagle Owl from Earth-2!
The Hawkowl who laughs 😂
"I'm sorry"
"thank you"
this is an all-timer, holy hell 🤣
The “Fuck Paul Levitz” thing is interesting because for the most part is he seems to be an OK guy; like idk maybe not the greatest but he’s just some guy that wrote a celebrated run on LoSH just doing his job.
Considering the amount of pot shots that he makes at Peter David in his Marville book it seems like Bill Jemas is a very petty jackass.
It's funny how Hawkowl is somehow more pathetic than the Ultimate universe's Nighthawk and that guy is just Kick-Ass
I’ve been refreshing my page for 30 minutes waiting for this😂
Sal, you sir do so much research and work for this channel! Your passion is really inspiring man! You got me into Spider-Man at 30! I’m now 40 and still watching all your content. Your whole team is awesome 👏
Man that Woody name reveal was like getting hit with a taser, it's actually a good name because he can just go I'M WOODY and then arrest everybody while they're laughing too hard to fight back
I'm surprised Linkara never covered this one.
With that Jay and Silent Bob parody it was never a question that this book would appear, only a matter of time.
The Pinkertons are gonna come after that poster.
As long as their lair isn't hiding any Wizards of the Coast merch they should be good
I'm sure Quesada was editor for UA just to officially get his name into the U Decide debacle without having to go "Here is my champion, Ron Zimmerman!" David and Jemas wrote their own books, but Quesada wasn't about to take the time to write or draw one himself.
But he would do so for One More Day.
The way hawk-owl looks in the background image remind us of phantom of paradise
Just because you said that no one remembers this means that Hickman WILL write them in just to spite you
Its like Aunt Ruth and Father Joe had a whole spin off comic then showed back up for the series finale.
Joe Quesada's weird obsession with reigniting the Marvel/DC rivalry post-90s crash was friggin' weird... (and arguably a contributor to the toxicity we see in online comic discourse today)
I am so tempted to buy this trade for a friend of mine that is a big Batfan and despises ASBAR
The fact anybody thought either of these books that aren't anything would outsell the only one that is a thing is so fucking funny
Hawk Owl and Woody appeared again in Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal in the background at the "The Alley Behind the Closed Down Laundrymat Comic Con" just sayin
The only "Marvel Batman" I can think of really is Nighthawk. Who's part of a whole Justice League pastiche.
"wrong again kid" 😂😂😂
ULTIMATE SPI- oh. Wait. XD
Now you need to do Captain Marvel
Opens with 20 minutes of Behind The Scenes of whats happening at Marvel. Love it
This is like Brat Pack but if the reason for its existence was weak as hell
Everyone seemed to hate this back when it came out and it's been one of my guilty pleasure reads since release. I always wanted just a bit more with these characters.
A Chicago-based Batman analog in the Marvel universe could have been a really interesting idea. There's still time for Marvel to try it again!
I like how it takes 21 mins of back story for this one book. I start rolling
I had never heard of this. What?! This had so much baggage. My favorite part was everyone just feeling sorry for each other for going through this ordeal together lmao
Marvel's What If?: What If Batman Suuuuuuuuuuuucked.
The owl tangent at the end is honestly a great idea for a villain. Like if the court of owls were deathly silent as they approach
I feel like they read Berserk and thought "hey that Griffin guy has a cool costume" before designing HawkOwl.
You know it’s a good one when you get 20 minutes of sweet, delicious context
I am a massive Ultimate Universe fan...and I somehow didn't know this existed. This book sounds insane.
The real question is: did Hawk Owl and Woody survive Ultimatum?
Been reading comics 20 years. Honestly never heard of ultimate adventures.
Count yourself lucky
You know what this whole story feels like? It feels like one of those fantasy American dad episodes. Like I can see Steve and Rodger getting in to this kind of nonsense and fighting principle Lewis or Bullock
The silent owl at the end was hilarious! Really funny to think about, but it would be legitimately terrifying!
I was going to say that now we need the Captain Marvel book to complete the trilogy, but I am thinking, "Perhaps, how about no?"
I'd watch it.
Fill the pie with Joker venom
Now we need you guys to cover the Captain marvel run
I unironically love this book! 😂 Read it many times, still hoping for a sequel some day! 😁
I don't think that's gonna happen considering 7 people know about this
Captain Marvel by Peter David slaps
You know it’s a really good episode if Ben and Ethan want to leave within the first few minutes lol. Also, did anyone else audibly yell OH NOOOO! At the end of ep 2 of ‘97?
Oh Lordy.
Of all the things I could have expected, this is not one of them.
If we went this deep for a back issues, I really hope for a Godzilla episode in the near future
HAHAHA a U-Decide poster. Glorious! 🤣
Bill Jemas somehow makes Rob Liefeld look like a artistic genius.
I saw the episode of Futurama that they referenced in this video and Sal and Ethan were quoting it directly. The Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium
Fegredo had an amazing run drawing Hellboy, at least.
I remember reading this book when I was a kid but completely forgot what happened in it and had no idea about it’s complicated history.
What's Griffith doing there? :D
1:24:00 that had me absolutely howling with laughter, new episode=good day. love the tidbits and insight into the industry at the start of this video too! just another wonderful episode, Sal you're really pushing the boys to the limit with these books haha. i kinda would love to see the alternate universe where this book was covered in the early days when Ethan and Ben were a bit less forgiving of comic book whackyness lmfao.
I love this episode i enjoy y'alls disscusion of this book so much
Eventually we are going to get through all the bad ideas Marvel had in this era. We got trouble, Marville, and now this. What else can we put into this back issues playlist
What?! Ethan’s beard is even thicker now?! I thought you were one of us but now I see I was mistaken… you lucky magnificent bastard.. grow it out as thick as you can! For all of us no-facial-hair-growers! 💪🏿
WTF was this lmao!!
Thanks guys I had so much fun, great show!
Sal: “One gets a pie thrown in his face if he loses. And the other gets fired.”
Um, how exactly is that fair?
I LOVE THIS BOOK
I have so many panels in the snow saved from his series
Thanks for the hilarious episode, guys...! 👍🏻
I enjoyed reading this as a kid but I felt bad for the principal. Can you imagine if they bring these characters back?
You got to love that it takes 20 minutes just to build up to talking about this book
Hey, that's "Stately" Danner Manor. 🙂
Honestly, I "like" this "better" than Trouble... 🤣
Of all the comics, this was one of them.
OK, which one of you ticked off Sal again?
I now need Ethan to sub his dialogue into all spoken sections of Another Brick in the Wall
I... Actually want this book to get a reboot. It could be something great.
How about this: If there is ever more HawkOwl, I will buy it as my first ever comic book.
1:08:17 I literally had to rewind this part because I thought sal was joking... This book is insane!
oh thank christ I was hitting a part on the exercise bike where its getting hard [about hour mark] and need a great distraction if I want to make it to 90 min. steam deck in hand, back issues on the tv, me int he bike seat, all is well with the world
I love Ben's reaction 😆🤣🤣
Oh look, it's Griffith!
please do Inhumans by Jenkins and Lee. I'm a huge Inhumans fan but there is only one Inhumans video on this channel and it's the death of inhumans.
I've been waiting for this!
There are some nuggets of ideas in there. I kind of like the concept of the Principal, he feels like a Silver Age kind of Batman villain with how absurd the premise is, and the way he gets turned into a villain is even reminiscent of King Tut from the 60's show. There's almost something here. Almost.
I read the first couple issues a couple times since they were hanging around my local comic shop for a long time.
Hawkowl was killed in Ultimatum, but no one cared to find the body.
I don't think I've laughed harder this year than that last minute
