  • With the help of Companion we can use one Blackmagic ATEM to control another. This method will let you push a button on an ATEM Mini and have that same thing happen on your ATEM Mini Extreme - for example.
Perfect for helpers, volunteers and training - or if you just don't fully trust your team-mate!

Perfect timing, I was just planning on using this kind of setup very very soon!
Thank you for the clear explanations! :)

Thank you for sharing, John. When I got time I will test this method to start a video on VLC when I press corresponding input on my Atem.

Very interesting video, indeed the use cases will come up, especially using it to run a 2nd or 3rd M/E for IMAG...makes life quite easier, give it to the multimedia team to get the right feed, and possibly supersource or something close to it too (dependent on which ATEM)...thanks for your videos always informative

This was great. I’m thinking of a use case where a person can use one mini to handle 4 inputs and feed into the other mini/SDI etc to add and have up to 7 inputs. I think you have touched on this before but haven’t seen it yet.

Thanks John, excellent explanation of an interesting idea. Is there any chance you could create a video showing how to use OSC on Companion. I want to control the Mixing Station app but cannot work out how to do it. Many thanks.

Thank you for the video. So basically you created a rather expensive but great looking remote control :) I immidiattely after this video checked the used prices again. With all the unused first generation Atem mini's laying around, the used price become less and less so this gives the old mini's a new life :) But I have to be quick because when people find out about this video, the price of the mini will go up again :)

It’s only expensive if you don’t have 5 ATEM Minis laying around 😅

    Cool idea! 🙌🏻
I’m thinking: why not control multiple Atems from one? Some button that is not used could be set to change what Atem should be controlled.

Do you know if this work essentially the same with a constellation 2m/e and mini extreme? I’d to continue using our mini extreme on the desktop as space is limited, but looking at the 2m/e mainly for the extra outputs/camera control and using it as something of a video hub.

Yes you could use it that way!

Can I Use the tbar controls with this method? So I'm using a 4me with advanced panel and the mini extreme should perform the same commands

Sounds like it has changed over time - But last I checked things are fairly similar - where are you finding issues?

I've worked in live TV for at least 15 years. I simply cannot understand the point of this. This seems absolutely useless to me... But at least, I see that ATEMs can be combined, I am worried about latency however. My main concern in researching this is to try and find a way to use two of those things to have a cheap switcher with an AUX bus to feed displays on set

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  3 місяці тому

You could use this as an instant backup when with ATEMs are connected and the backup is ready to be switched to at any point. Or you could have one ATEM in your rack and use another ATEM at the control location where you would only need the network connection attached.
There are a bunch of weird use cases, but sometimes it’s just fun to explore what is possible and then let others apply it to their needs.

@@heretorecord Yeah, I get that. I don't know if what I'm talking about is that weird though.
The one drawback from the miniaturization of live switchers to me is that you're losing the MLE/DVE and direct AUX output you get from big broadcast TV Ross boards, which is used to loop and feed animations and so much more to monitors on-set (as in, monitors that are in frame: in the background, under the desk, etc.). I love how ATEMs can sync playback to source selection, like Avid/Ross Overdrive would...
It just seems ridiculous to me that you can get so much out of these small switchers, but still, in order to get an AUX bus, you need to pay tens of thousands extra for a much larger model with tons of extra stuff that's often not really necessary.
