I guess Dumbledore and Voldemort each had a bad feeling about the other. "If anything, by Harry's 2nd year at Hogwarts, after he destroyed Voldermort's diary, that should have been the supreme wake-up call for Voldermort to be weary of the other horcruxes potentially being destroyed." Yeah, Voldemort seems to have been overconfident about his horcrux protection. If he really wanted to screw up Dumbledore and Harry's horcrux plan, all Voldemort needed to do was create an extra horcrux, and stick it on the moon or somewhere else obscure. That makes a lot more sense than killing his favorite professor, who was too cowardly to confront him. I always thought Dumbledore's weird obsession with Slughorn's memory was head scratching, when the more important info was the location of the horcruxes, and how to destroy them. Slughorn knew none of those answers.
@billebrooks I think Dumbledore wanted the memory because he wanted to confirm his suspensions about what dark magic they were dealing with and also he didn't know how many Horcruxes he made.

Voldemort probably thought Slughorn was an old fool who wouldn't be any threat to him. Voldemort was all powerful and had so many followers who would do anything for him. What was the point in killing him? It wouldn't achieve anything, so he chose to ignore him.
@@AnnaBellaChannel I meant in his later years. He felt he was no threat to him and so left him. Why waste his time. Voldemort felt Harry, a mere 17 year old wizard couldn't find all of the horcruxes he made and he was safe.
Honestly, its probably because he didnt know about the connection to lily and therefore, the emotional pull Harry may have had, didnt eveb cross his mind. But then again even if he did it probably wouldnt have mattered anyway and the video covers the rest of those possibilities. Good piece
Voldemort has large respect for knowledge and wisdom for ambition, Slughorn is poor working man who became a professor and was kind to him. Voldemort saw himself in a similar manner
Horace Slughorn is a genius wizard who literally raised Tom Riddle at Hogwarts .Tom Riddle loved him hence the sugared pineapple cubes. Slughorn is the father figure to Tom Riddle plus the wizard can turn himself into an armchair. Why kill the great Horace Slughorn? There is everything to loss and nothing to gain form it.
lol Riddle didn’t love him, he loved no one except maybe Nahgini, he was manipulating Slughorn, buttering him up so he could get information out of him…simple as that. 🤷🏻♀️
Riddle found out about his Slytherin heritage after researching the origins of his second name, Marvolo. He knew about the Gaunt family and the connection to Salazar Slytherin. Researching the history of the Hogwarts founders, he probably learned of the spat between Gryffindor and Slytherin, which led Slytherin to leave the castle, but not before leaving a monster in a secret chamber to purge the school of muggle borns. Professor Binns knew the history, as did other Hogwarts professors, and it is likely that Tom found out about it, since it wasn’t exactly secret. I don’t think he would have heard the Basilisk moving around the castle. A powerful charm was placed on the Basilisk to ensure that it hibernated, and could only be summoned and controlled by Slytherin’s heirs. It is likely that through the Gaunt connection, Tom found out about Corvinus Gaunt, and how he hid the entrance of the chamber in a bathroom after the introduction of modern plumbing in Hogwarts. Which probably led him to investigate the bathrooms in Hogwarts for a possible entrance. And he found it, in the girl’s bathroom we all know about. Being Prefect probably meant that he had privileges of monitoring the castle after dark, which would have given him plenty of opportunities to investigate and find the entrance to the chamber.
@@b5913-w8l Also dont forget that he used the basilisk to kill the girl in the bathroom which Harry later on become friends with. Helena Ravenclaw also knew him from the time on the school where he promised to destroy her mothers diadem. But instead he used it to hide his soul in it. And then he ofc become a mentor like Percy is which grant him more power over normal students like walking on the castle after bed time.
I disagree with you, Voldemort did not have a close relationship with anyone including professor Slughorn. Voldemort used people and pretended that he liked them to get them to give him what he needs and wants. One of my favorite parts of the whole Harry Potter movies was actually slughorn scenes they were the funniest and the most touching for me ,like when Harry caught him stealing the herbs and when he breaks the spider's thing lol but my favorite part is when he tells Harry the story of the fish lily gave him Harry's answer
Slughorn is a genius wizard he is not harmless. But he is comfy in his armchair form. He is a mean dualists. Tom Riddle respected the wizard who raised him and taught him.
Most of the people voldermort murdered were harmless. Actually when you think about It, he never really killed powerful wizards. Most of the people he killed senselessly were harmless.
Voldemort wasn’t the most powerful or the smartest wizard (Dumbledore and Grindelwald were the ones) but he was the most perverse and ready to do unimaginable things.
He is canonically stated to be stronger than Grindelwald. Its time to accept this and move on. And he has some statements that would place his raw destructive power above Dumbledore, albeit still not being as great overall as him due to not having as much of an understanding as Albus did. Remember, Voldemort fought against the Elder Wand. Grindelwald lost while he himself wielded it. And while Albus was older, magic doesnt grow weaker with age. Its not like athletics etc. If anything he was more knowledgeable than he used to be.And he is stated to have still been fast and strong like a much younger man physically
Dumbledore yes, Grindelwald no. I swear ever since the movies came up, people got the wrong impression that Grindelwald was stronger than Voldy. He was not.
Two reasons: 1) Slughorn was embarrassed and guilty - thus Voldermort knew he wouldn’t tell anyone 2) Slughorn has a unique space in his life… he taught Tom, was in the Slug Club and Slughorn being the Slytherin head also taught most of the death eaters and Pure Blood Families etc Childhood perception is a wonderful thing, I still call my teachers Sir and Mrs and I’m 30 years old 🤣. It’s the reason Voldemort still fears Dumbledore too, deep down he respects Slughorn but would probably still have killed him if necessary
Voldemort knew Slughorn hated himself for telling him and he knew he'd never tell because it'd ruin the reputation he built through the years. There was also respect there, he respected Slughorn skill and intelligence and was wanting to use him in the future though Slughorn wouldn't join and be killed so either way his secret was safe but he didn't expect Dumbledore and Harry to exploit Slughorn like he did to get information, one of the reasons he lost
There's another option - Slughorn may well be too powerful for Voldemort to kill. Voldemort may well have feared Slughorn as much as he does Dumbledore. One other thing - most people do not know Tom Riddle is Voldemort. It's suggested that Slughorn does but it's never spelled out specifically...
Slughorn was a part of Voldemort's prestigious rise to power. I think he was reluctant to destroy him because Voldemort wanted there to be the belief out there that he was special and not a belief that he was just an orphan who lucked out into power. He believed in the whole being collected by Slughorn as a mark of unique greatness or atleast the narrative of it.
Voldemort was not as evil as everyone thought. As you perfectly described he has wormtail do over Cedric. And Nagini actually finished off Snape. Most of his terminations were done to further split his soul and were calculated. He really didn't have a massive number of deaths at his hand.
Keeping Slughorn alive to live with the guilt on his conscience would have been just about the most sadistic thing Voldemort could have done. If Slughorn was killed or tortured under Cruciatus Curse, then he’d have just been another statistic; also, Slughorn could be manipulated easily for info.
Voldemort wouldn't have really had the opportunity to kill Slughorn before he took over the ministry at the start of deathly hallows. After that I don't think he would have seen the need to kill him. Dumbledore was gone and slughorn was at a death eater controlled hogwarts where order members had little chance of being in contact with him.
Probably because he was Tom's father figure and the only person when Tom had nothing who was actively interested in his success. Tom likely had the closest thing to love he was capable of for Horace Slughorn.
What if Harry talked to the basilisk in the chamber like he did to other snakes in the movie they made it to where he couldn’t but it’s different in the books both the memory and Harry has some of Voldemort soul so they should have equal pull with it
I don't really think he made a mistake on that though as you said, he knew Slughorn very well they were very close and he is as you said an actor he's a master manipulator not only was he able to get this knowledge this dangerous knowledge out of slughorn. He is also the man that managed Either figure out or get the Gray lady to reveal her true identity to him and even manage to convince her to tell him where she hid her mother's Diadem a secret she kept for what a 1000 years?. So the man knew people he may not have had any empathy for anyone because he didn't care about anyone truly except himself, but he understood people and understood how they work, how they're Emotions and mentality work so he knew how Slughorn would behave when he realized that he had helped create one of the most dangerous dark wizards on the planet. A man like him would not reveal that information to anyone and to be fair he was almost entirely correct, I mean look at the series of events that had to happen for him to even give the information in the first place. Ironically enough one of the driving factors for this was that he killed Lily Potter someone who just like Tom himself Slughorn valued greatly And out of all of the people that could be the one to try to get this information from him it was lily Potter's son and even then Harry still had to rely on the liquid luck to really get him to do it, get him to give the information. And even then I don't think Voldemort ever really considered the information that slughorn had to be a real danger, because when you think about it voldemort had to have assumed at some point that he would probably get himself killed, especially when someone like Dumbledore was still around and he feared Dumbledore because he knew dumbledore could kill him. And it's not as if Dumbledore is the only powerful wizard or witche in the entire world, because there are a lot of witches and wizards in the entire world so there must be a few out there as powerful as dumbledore if not more so that would definitely be a threat to Tom. After all one of the things he did after he left Hogwarts was travel around the world as he learned more, under go rituals and grew in power and all that, so it's not as if he would be unaware of just how dangerous the magical world is, even to him. So eventually when someone managed to kill him he would have to resurrect Himself and obviously there would be witches and wizards out there with the knowledge of horcruxes. It's not like the knowledge's secret I mean seriously Tom found out about this in a book in hogwarts if the book is in hogwarts I'm quite sure there exists other books on it, clearly because slughorn himself possessed even greater knowledge of it than that book Tom found so this knowledge exists in other places. Look no further than Regulus Black he easily figured out that Voldemort had created a Horcrux. And I'm assuming he did so because the black library should no doubt have knowledge of it probably extensive knowledge of it. So to voldemort really the only dangerous knowledge would have been how many he made and what they are and where they are located not the fact that he created them, I'm sure he figured people would figure that out eventually. So the knowledge slughorn on his own possess was no real danger to him by that point, it was only really so dangerous because of who Slughorn told the knowledge to because of the knowledge that Dumbledore and Harry already possessed. So I can understand why he didn't really see Slughorn as a real threat to him. But unfortunately for Voldemort he could not account for every situation.
I feverishly disagree that it was circumstantial factors that allowed Harry to defeat Voldemort - Harry had power Voldemort knows not. It was that power - of love and caring and knowledge - that allowed Harry to win. That's not circumstance. That's power and skill.
I forget what fire they wizards can produce that can also destroy a horcrux... but that felt lazy... they had the power all along... click your heels, start a fire... and bam... not need to wander the woods with a locket...
Still making Harry Potter videos! I thought by now you would have run out of ideas, and I look forward to that day when you have finished these fantasies that you have. The chat was purely academic from both the books and movies, so Tom had nothing to fear with regards to Horrace Slughorn.
Voldemort was too concerned about Harry Potter and his inability to kill this one person. - From the moment he came back he was all about finding the prophecy, killing Harry’s protector Dumbledore and then hunting him down. Also Slughorn was first in hiding and then in Hogwarts.
He was hiding from death eaters the first time we meet him. The only reason he was out in the open at Hogwarts was because it’s protected. Voldemort didn’t respect anyone, including his family and followers.
A lot from what I took from the books was how arrogance, complacency and overconfidence can negatively affect your goals. I don't think he cared about slughorn at all. Like you say, he knew things, very dark things. If he was so inclined, he could have been a very valuable death eater with his magical skill and intelligence. Slughorn was a coward, and there is no doubt about that. In the end Slughorn pulled through and faced his own demons, Voldemort did not think slughorn would change.
Your last video on this I loved because I’m watching new rockstars and their breakdowns and your last video on Slughorn, who’s an absolute favorite character of mine I think the movie does him such justice. Was really amazing. You reading the book was fantastic. Your work for the characters was really well done. And happy to see a new video and excited to watch it now.
The real answer? A plothole.. a character inconsistency, resulting from it being out of mind during writing.. Because come on, all things being followed to conclusion.. Voldemort would of 100% have killed the only man who knew his biggest secret.. his only weakness.
Because we needed to know how many horcruxes riddle made . In simpler words for the plot (wich made Voldemort whole arogance thing repetitive, especially in 6th year. So no loyal Death Eater child told their parents at holiday about the favorite teach Snape getting DADA position and Sluggy getting appointed, then Voldy reading his followers mind casually and not thinking that the guy he asked splitting his soul 7 times is back is not fishy at all ?? Rowling needed to make Voldemort an idiot+ unsuccessfull when she needed him to be otherwise he would have won so many times . ( The whole love protection charm needed: 1. Ask the sacrifical person to step aside 2. 3 TIMES 3 The person begging and using minimum or no force against the opponent at all
Voldemort played by Ralph Fiennes was complete clown, just a straightforward villain Hated more 1. Umbridge 2. Lucius 3. Bellatrix 4. Cornelius 5. Wormtail
Voldemort did not kill Snape because he thought "he was stopping him from controlling the elder wand". Voldemort killed Snape because he remembered that it was Snape who killed Dumbledor. Therefore, the wand answered to Snape and not Voldemort himself. So, logically, he thought that by killing Snape, he would become to true master of the Elder wand. It was not just a whim or a minor inconvenience.
“Stopping him from controlling the elder wand” and “snape killed dumbledore” are part of the same chain of reasoning, and cannot be divorced in the way that you did. Snape killed Dumbledore, which led Riddle to believe that Snape was the impediment to controlling the Elder Wand fully.
Voldemort probably thought killing Slughorn would expose him. I'll explain. Let's say Slughorn extracted the true memory and entrusted it to someone with the condition that they're only supposed to, let's say, give the memory to Dumbledore if he dies or is tortured by Death Eaters.
Voldemort was skilled in legilimency. He knew that Slughorn was ashamed and too prideful to admit having helped him. He never counted on him making that personal sacrifice for the greater good.

However, I don't think either of them ever trusted the other ever again. It's hard to pin down exactly why, as Voldemort attempted to charm every other professor, especially Slughorn.
I used to watch your videos all the time, but for the last many many many many months I have not seen them pop up in my scrolling! So I’m glad I saw one of your videos today! Happy new year
One of the most interesting premises in the series, thank you for the great video.
Probably a combination of nostalgia, and the fact finding out about the horcruxes only complicated things for who ever wanted to defeat him.
Voldemort: I'm going to choose wizard artifacts for my horcruxes. I can't make it too difficult.
Pretty much make him see that he created a monster and make him feel eternity guilty about it. And probably might be Tom's favorite teacher.
He is Tom Riddle's favourite teacher as the boy got him sugared pineapples. Slughorn raised Tom Riddle.
Slughorn created a monster but no body wants to that monster no more they want voldy he’s chopped liver but if you want voldy he’s what he’ll give you a lil bit of fathers bones, wormtails arm mixed with some potter liquor
Great video Dean.
Voldemort probably thought Slughorn was an old fool who wouldn't be any threat to him. Voldemort was all powerful and had so many followers who would do anything for him. What was the point in killing him? It wouldn't achieve anything, so he chose to ignore him.
Tom Riddle did not think Slughorn was a fool. Slughorn is genius wizard.
Good piece
Knowing is half the battle...
And the other half is violence.
Always love ur HPF vids Dean. Could u make vids on more creatures, like dragons and merpeople pls.
Two videos in two days! Nice
Lord Voldemort made a massive blunder in sparing Horace
Yeah cheers mate that’s exactly what he said in the video
He made many blunders in his life. LIke giving his own book to Lucius.
I still want to know how Tom Riddle found the Chamber of Secrets when he was at school.
Honestly might have just heard the basilisk and worked from there
Riddle found out about his Slytherin heritage after researching the origins of his second name, Marvolo.
There's a difference between a close relationship and someone who manipulates another by whatever needs possible including deceiving them that they feel close to them. relationship
Slughorn was a harmless man and Voldemort probably respected him.
Myrtle was harmless too and I don’t think Voldemorts arrogance would let him respect anyone
Slughorn is a genius wizard he is not harmless. But he is comfy in his armchair form. He is a mean dualists. Tom Riddle respected the wizard who raised him and taught him.
Voldy didn't care for hardly anyone.
@@aniekdolstra4269 Myrtle was a muggleborn, Slughorn was pureblood.
Most of the people voldermort murdered were harmless. Actually when you think about It, he never really killed powerful wizards. Most of the people he killed senselessly were harmless.
My question was always " why Voldemort didnt make more horcruxes when he felt that harry was destroying them "
Because the nr 7 was a strong magic number which he cared alot about. Making more would make no sense to him.
I'll never bore of Jks ,Potter lore. Wand lore especially.
He was not.
What if Snape looked and saw Harry was taking notes in their first class
That was in the movie only
Two reasons:
1) Slughorn was embarrassed and guilty - thus Voldermort knew he wouldn’t tell anyone
2) Slughorn has a unique space in his life… he taught Tom, was in the Slug Club and Slughorn being the Slytherin head also taught most of the death eaters and Pure Blood Families etc
Childhood perception is a wonderful thing, I still call my teachers Sir and Mrs and I’m 30 years old 🤣.
Slughorn was a honorable man in detail Hiwos designing to stay behind and Dight
He wanted Slughorn to bear witness to the monster he help to create. It was torture, not through the cruciatus curse, but through guilt.
That was his favorite teacher
Again because of Voldy's great weakness: his inability to understand love
What if the Malfoys were double agents playing both sides so they come out on top seem more to fit into their motive
Voldemort say slughorn who? Hahahaha 😂 next. 🎉. Happy new year everyone ✨️
It's all well and good but as he was a Hogwarts professor in the year Snape was headmaster, surely they could have found some way in to get/lure him?
I feverishly disagree that it was circumstantial factors that allowed Harry to defeat Voldemort - Harry had power Voldemort knows not. It was that power - of love and caring and knowledge - that allowed Harry to win. That's not circumstance. That's power and skill.
But what about Regulus A Black. He found out about Voldemort’s secret too…
he died
He not only found out. He also tried to destroy them
@@octapusxfthe only knew about & tried to destroy the locket, he had no idea about others
Ok
How many people in Voldy's life were actually as good to him as Slughorn was?
Voldemort was too concerned about Harry Potter and his inability to kill this one person.
-
From the moment he came back he was all about finding the prophecy, killing Harry’s protector Dumbledore and then hunting him down. Also Slughorn was first in hiding and then in Hogwarts.
read the title thought "because it was there little secret"
Could be that’s why he kills anyone who gets in his way now. Learned his lesson type of thing
This makes a lot of sense.
He was hiding from death eaters the first time we meet him. The only reason he was out in the open at Hogwarts was because it’s protected. Voldemort didn’t respect anyone, including his family and followers.
I think 🤔 he didn't kill him because he helped make the horcruxes become possible unintentionally
The only one he killed by his own hands was the muggle teacher in the 7 movie.
@ what’s that got to do with that I said?
slughorn was actually nice to Tom.
That comment really means so much to me. Thank you
The real answer? A plothole.. a character inconsistency, resulting from it being out of mind during writing..
Because come on, all things being followed to conclusion.. Voldemort would of 100% have killed the only man who knew his biggest secret.. his only weakness.
Voldemort didn’t kill him because he knew slughorn had his own horcruxes
The answer is simple: he spared him out of pragmatic reasons.
Such as?
Slughorn is raised Tom Riddle and is pureblood genius wizard who can turn himself into a armchair. The wizard is minted.
Because he couldn't find him stated directly in the beginning of the 6th book
Because we needed to know how many horcruxes riddle made . In simpler words for the plot (wich made Voldemort whole arogance thing repetitive, especially in 6th year. So no loyal Death Eater child told their parents at holiday about the favorite teach Snape getting DADA position and Sluggy getting appointed, then Voldy reading his followers mind casually and not thinking that the guy he asked splitting his soul 7 times is back is not fishy at all ?? Rowling needed to make Voldemort an idiot+ unsuccessfull when she needed him to be otherwise he would have won so many times . ( The whole love protection charm needed:
1. Ask the sacrifical person to step aside
2. 3 TIMES
3 The person begging and using minimum or no force against the opponent at all
oh I feel that Voldamort had tried to get Slughorn on his Side he said no and just was running how Harry a d dumudore find him in Half blood Prices😊
Yeah your right
Roy slater 🤣🤣🤣
I *WISH* I Could "Obliviate" TheMemories From My Past.😒
He could have probably drink liquid luck
Are we disregarding Regulus Black?
Voldemort played by Ralph Fiennes was complete clown, just a straightforward villain
Hated more
1. Umbridge
2. Lucius
3. Bellatrix
4. Cornelius
The wand answered to Draco until Harry disarmed him in Malloy manor cause it was Draco who disarmed Dumbledore
@@YamiYugi13 Yeah. Voldemort didn't know that.
@@AnkhArcRod You're saying the exact same thing, just in more detail.
That's the same thing
Collected?
Plot convenience. Simple :)
There are people who cried when Voldemort died, because it wasn’t Umbridge.
Wasn’t slughorn a pure blood so he more then likely wouldn’t want to
Voldemort probably thought killing Slughorn would expose him. I'll explain.
Let's say Slughorn extracted the true memory and entrusted it to someone with the condition that they're only supposed to, let's say, give the memory to Dumbledore if he dies or is tortured by Death Eaters.
Harry flipper!!!
Because JK isn’t that good of a story planner.
Yeah it's pretty much that simple lol
Because JKR is unable to write a good plot.
This is all extremely obvious stuff fully explained in the books. What a waste of time watching this video!
