- Yes, we crashed the Ferret! In true Douglas Adams style, in order to avoid any stress and nervous tension I can tell you that both of us are OK, apart from one of us getting a thorn stuck in their finger while climbing back up the bank, and the Ferret is now back home in the garage and working OK, although I will check it over very thoroughly to find out what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.
It's a bit hard to tell from the video with the recorder's image stabilisation but we were travelling along at 20 mph when the front of the Ferret bounced a couple of times and then the front right wheel locked up (which also locks up the rear right wheel as they are connected), and we were dragged off the road to the right and slid about 50 feet down the bank, stopping about 6 feet from the river. We might have been able to reverse out, but just as it came to a stop it slid sideways and ended up at 45 degrees sitting on a rock with both left wheels off the ground and a tree behind us.
We walked to the Wasdale Head Inn where they were very helpful and let us use their phone as there's no mobile phone signal in the Wasdale valley. We also had a pint of Guinness each to steady our nerves.
Taxi home that night as no recovery vehicles available, then back the next day with two recovery trucks, it took 2 winches to get it back up and we blocked the road for about 2.5 hours, but everyone we held up was very understanding, luckily. M6 Recovery Services, highly recommended.
We think we were very lucky - if it had happened earlier we could have ended up in England's deepest lake, Wastwater, and any later we could have rolled down the bank as it's steeper, which would have done a lot more damage to us and the Ferret. If we were in a normal car we'd have rolled and completely trashed it and ourselves. We may have to apologise to the National Trust for destroying a few of their trees on the way down.
In order that some sense of mystery should be preserved I won't reveal which of us sustained the finger damage... you'll have to watch the video.
My father spent a lot of his 35 year career on secondment at Bovington camp teaching people to drive. He was in QDG’s. Long story short he was out with a trainee Rupert and lost control opposite Lawrence of Arabia’s cottage, as is started to roll over my father managed to get inside with the exception of his fingers. He was very lucky and suffered the tips of each finger getting scraped. Needless to say he wasn’t overly impressed with said Rupert and finding a bit of wood whacked him on his head. By the time my father was fit to go back to the D&M school the Rupert was no longer serving.
THAT DID NOT SLIP!! he just didn't steer correctly in the road! and if he had slowed more he might have steered correctly to make that turn!!
We did say it was hard to tell from the video because of the image stabilisation. It pulled to the right a bit before we got to the corner, too quick to recover from it and once a wheel goes in the mud it's gone.
Some unplanned field work I see. Maybe the Ferret had a flashback and was diving for cover? Great to see you both unscathed and wiser for the experience. Look forward to the 'return to the road' videos!
We have a bunch of Ferrets at our museum. Ive seen this happen if a bevel box, drive shaft, or hub on one wheel has no oil and it seizes on a longer run.
I had checked the hubs just before we did this part of the journey, all just slightly warm, and the bevels by the driver were just warm as well, but we'll be checking all of this before we go out again!
Glad you got it out in the end, heck of a challenging recovery just there.
Kubelwagen….spelling?……..love em !
Wow! I'm pleased your both OK. Excitement for the recovery team too.
I think they enjoyed the challenge, but it would have been better if they'd turned up earlier and could have done it in daylight!
@@CliffAndLouise at least it wasn't peak tourist season 😅
@@BritishTeaBiker And it helped that we had passed the campsite and car park, so less traffic trying to get past.
@@CliffAndLouise true, have to admit though, I had serious secondhand fear when I rode past and saw it down there, I've had days when driving my old Defender along that stretch when it's been sheer black ice, always had a fear in the back of my head of 'what happens if I slide here' - in fairness I think the defender would roll, the ferret has that nice low centre of gravity thankfully 😁
The magnetic trees claim another victim
Ive always heard that when you have the front impeller shafts in you need to drive off road or over some bumps every now and then or this can happen
We know about that, they can get locked up, but usually on straight roads or when you do a lot of turns in one direction, not on bendy roads like this!
skidded my arse wtf really happened...not watching road? Woulda been a bit freaky for sure!!
Thought you were going a bit to fast for single track ! 😁
It might look fast, but it was about 15-20mph, probably in 3rd gear. We don't go fast on roads like this!
You did not Skid down the bank you Drove down the Bank???🤔
Once one wheel in a 4 tonne vehicle hits the soft verge that's where you're going, no control.
pleased your both OK
Good driver
And it's a normal blue bell call eh?
Oh, the car commander was NOT happy was she?
She was OK after a few Guinnesses and a couple of single malts...
And 20 fags.......😂👍👍👍@@CliffAndLouise
Cute car that Ferret, it’ll buff out.
Greets from Romania ❤️🇷🇴
There was almost no damage, just a missing wing mirror, which I went back and collected, and one wire to the rear lights broken, which I've repaired. A few small dents, but that just looks 'battle worn'!
Driver !!!
Mrs Patterson
Sucked ya right in there!
Glad all is good.
Serious numpty
camera quality looks more like 720p not 1080p!! shame you didn't have a better camera!
Numpty
Bad luck to happen with the women onboard
Driver needs a new licence
Seen that a lot , because of the drive system once it goes you can't stop it
Yes, that's what we found! We'll be a bit more cautious in future!
I'm so glad neither of you were hurt! 🫡👍Finger poke notwithstanding as it was post crash.😂
Yes, but it really hurt!!!! Luckily, my wife kissed it better and put a plaster on it. Shame she couldn't do that to the Ferret...
