There exists a scale to understand how to use gouache. Tea, coffee, milk, cream and butter (butter being gouache straight from the tube). Ideally you would work from light washes (tea and coffee) and build up to more opaque, thicker layers (milk and cream).
I started with Gouache recently so this is helpful! I've used it before in color theory classes but I had bad experiences with cheap gouache so I never went back to it until now. This is a pretty solid pack for most beginners but I'd also reccomend the introduction set of 10 as it has split primaries and some extra colors. I would highly reccomend others to use synthetic brushes with Gouache as having study brushes means a lot. Regular sable watercolor brushes tend to hold a lot of water which makes evenly spreading the brush I find to be more difficult. Lastly, work in thin layers! You can work thickly with Gouache but the biggest mistake I made was just layering it so much I couldn't change anything. Working super thin to thick will help you correct any mistakes quicker and easier. Overall, thank you for the review!
Gouache needs at least a wet brush. Most gouache requires some water to function properly. Often moist paper helps with the process as well 👍
I'm an "armchair painter" meaning I watch more videos than I practice painting, ha. From my learning, yes, water is needed, always. Sandra Ruberto is my gouache hero and her other tip is to always swatch before painting because, unlike watercolor, gouache dries DARKER, typically. The urban painters I've seen using gouache, pretty much use it just like watercolor, but take advantage of it's ability to layer light over dark for adding detail to foliage, such as adding the suggestion of flowers over leaves, highlighting, etc. The tricky thing about traveling with gouache is it maintains more opaque consistency used directly out of the tube. But you can dry it, just figure you'll have less opaque paint. Also figure it can crack and make a mess in your palette, so put it in a separate palette. It'll be fun to see if you incorporate it into your sketches
I do love Sandra Ruberto's videos! Have you seen James Gurney painting with gouache and casein? Amazing stuff! I love Teoh's style, but in watercolor and ink...he is a master of layers. Gouache is more a pyramid of color, back to front. *and yes, I think he would be great at it as well :)
not all gouaches crack. Anyway you must spray some water on them for they don't crack on the palette.
Add a few drops of glycerine to gouache to prevent it from cracking if you leave it in paint pans.
@@muskndusk the thing to remember is that traditional gouache is not made to stay in pans. Adding glycerin changes the texture. Just buy a good brand well balanced with pigment and medium is enough. The tip of spraying water on it concern the palette if it dries on during the process. But professional knows the quantity they have to extract from the tube to avoid the issue of drying on the palett.
I love Sandra's videos, too. I use both gouache and watercolour, but like you I mostly watch painting tutorials. Lol!

I used to hate gouache, bc at secondary school in art class, we would always use gouache paint, but with questionable quality and wrong brushes and paper.
Nowadays I could make the same setup somewhat work, but back then it frustrated me so much it woke a hate that lasted for years!!
I tried gouache again maybe 5 years ago and then upgraded to some kinda-artistgrade gouache (Talens Plakkatverv Gouache) and it was a gamechanger! Gouache is sooo much fun.
I'm planning to upgrade again and I wanted either the W&N Designer Gouache or the Shinhan Postercolour.

Hi Teoh ! Thanks for this review. I would like to see more of your gouache works. By the way, I think it is better to have 3 brushes at least. One medium round size, one thin for the details, and a flat soft brush to cover large surfaces. Yes, designer gouache are more vibrant. I think primary colors set is not enough.

I just used this after getting used to the Caran D'Ache gouache pan (which has dried cakes of gouache). This handles very differently. It's way more pigmented but also dries up very quickly (in seconds on the palette!). I can finally watch gouache tutorials now since it's from the tube, so I can mix colors more easily. I think I need to be stingy with the paint and generous with the water - I guess the thickness of the paint tricked me into thinking it would spread smoothly. This video really well demonstrates the scratchiness I was seeing, which I was struggling with for details. Maybe a smaller brush will help, but the Caran D'Ache (though lower quality) let me use the same brush for thick and thin painting. I was just globbing on the windsor and newton and then trying to nudge it around quickly before it dried. Annoyingly - but again due to how pigmented the paint is, which is a good thing - my water cup got ridiculously dirty right away.

I'd recommend winsor newton gouache. Caran d'ache gouache feels like watercolour.

When you were explaining why when water is added, the goache becomes more transparent, it kinda felt like a science lesson! 🤣
I've only used goache once and had problems with the paint not covering the surface properly as I assumed that to get the creamy look I needed to use 100% paint but only afterwards found out that a wet brush is quite essential 😅 Nonetheless, loved how your artwork turned out!!

I don't like much sets because they always put colors that are not very wanted by most of painters, that is a way to sell them. For designers who want vivid mixes with white, titanium white is better than zinc white. Zinc white don't have a good reputation, I heard it tends to cracks after long time dried. Zinc white is dull regarding to titanium white, I think it is important to know. Permanent white is very used and generally sold in big tubes which ones worst the money.

Gouache is a very clever tool to use with watercolour, particularly white. Also seeing several posts, Whatever level you are you MUST use ARTIST grade paints. You can't expect good results with crap materials. How good would your living room furniture look if it was made with plywood? Nice one Teoh 👍
I totally agree that bad quality of paints are not very significant to the name gouache, œil or anything. I always prefer to wait patiently for having enough money for good quality. But also the good quality deserved that I make many efforts to do a good job ! And for all paints it needs a long starting to be accoutmate with the several ways that it offers.
FYI permance rating is not lightfastness rating, permance measures the chemical stability and other factors along with lightfastness so the lightfastness might be different from the permanence rating.

Marty Owings from Owings Art, UA-cam channel, has done some pretty good gouache illustrations. Also, Lindsay Weirich from The Frugal Crafter, UA-cam channel has reviewed and demonstrated gouache from several different brands. I've tried gouache before and did not have a good experience with it.

I tried the Windsor and newton guoache too, very nice! But the white run out pretty quickly and the individual white tubes are sold out lol
White is often that case. More economical to buy a big tube

you seem to have a suitable brush for it now, just make sure its a little damp. you can use acrylic like this too on paper - i like brands that dont have glossifiers added.
Wow I’ve used this brand for a year now, it was good. One of the paints I bought has leaked tube. It dried out now. The binders (the oily thingy??) and paint is sometimes separated! :( I prefer my holbein gouache paints but it’s harder to find here.
Have you ever tried Schmincke for designers?

@@smithanandari... M'graham are sold on internet. Schmincke also. I don't know where you are living. Maybe they don't have the internet secure payment system in your country. Schmincke and M'Graham have a good reputation for gouache, as well as for Holbein. All these are good ones, and many like also Winsor and Newton.
@@aylinbegum5744 good choice, I was thinking of buying M. Graham because James Gurney uses it but the shipping fee is the real problem. The local selection of gouaches here are W&N, Himi/Miya, and Holbein.
@@smithanandari I never tried jelly gouache but I know some illustrators have good results with Artxx. About the brand Himi Miya, I am not sure it is the same quality but I saw some good results too. I prefer to stay with traditional gouache, I love the texture and I know the possibilities with extra-fine to get thin texture as for watercolors. They also are very easy to mix and to apply.
Holbein gouache is excellent but it is also expensive. I think M'Graham could worth the money because of the quality. You don't need more than 12 tubes. If you begin with a set of 5 you have a lot of possibilities by mixes, but avoid black in mixes and white zinc, titanium white is better. Winsor and Newton have a good reputation and so many people paint with this brand.

I just want to ask a request since you also love to draw traditionally can you also include rebelle 3 on your drawing test i love that drawing program i used it on my desktop,. i've only tried the himi gouache on baohong cold press cotton paper.. I don't know if it's because of the brush or the paper or the paint i use, but I CAN'T GET A NICE CLEAN LAYDOWN OF PAINT. IT'S ALWAYS PATCHY :(( i'm thinking if i should try other gouache brands, or try again
I think you would get advantage to try an good brand of gouache. But just want to say first, be careful with the paper, thin grain is generally better than raw for gouache. Also, animal bristles brush could be too soft. I prefer synthetic brush, they hold the creamy gouache better.

Use a flat watercolor brush and try with different amounts of water concentration. Usually a flat is way less patchy than a round brush.
@@collapsev it depends on the surface. For small surfaces, round brushes are more convenient. I mostly paint with round brushes and "cat tongue", I never face this matter of patch. Flat brushes are especially good for large surfaces like backgrounds. It requires a certain ability to use flat brushes for everything. The angle and straight forms of flat can also become an issue for many people.

How long do the tubes last though?

I have only 1 white gouache tube from this brand and i regrette for bying it because is expansive the price of only 1 tube of this brand is the price of a box that have 12 tubes of the cheap gouache me i use MCOLOR brand of gouache this brand contain a bonus tube called mixer
