- Comparing cheap vs expensive gouache: does affordable gouache mean that it's not as good or is the expensive gouache worth saving up for? I compared two affordable gouache paints: the Himi Miya Jelly gouache with Arteza gouache against the most expensive gouache I have, Winsor & Newton gouache. I wanted to find out what the fundamental differences between each of these paints were, in opacity of the paint, quality, and pigment. I break down the differences between each of these sets of paint and swatch the primary colors on a color wheel to really see which performs the best.

hey for the zinc vs titanium debacle, put down another color. let it dry n cover half it with titanium white n half it with zinc white. zinc white will be the (way) more translucent one.
W&N Designer Gouache is not artist grade. It’s for designers (for logos etc) and not meant for people who are looking for lightfast pigments. Unless you only pick the lightfast gouache W&N provides in their Deisgner line......and they do have some, but artist quality consists of most (if not all) pigments being extremely or moderately lightfast, knocking out W&N Designer gouache from being considered artist grade but they are good quality opaque paints however they were only produced with designers in mind, not artists looking for lightfast permanent gouache. Aside from all that, they are still probably some of the most opaque gouache available. A bit pricey though for not even being actual artist grade.
@@valeriereneeharper yes, this. Lots of Winsor and Newton has a reputation for being artist quality, but often isn't. How many people think that Cotman watercolours are professional quality for example?

I always thought Himi looked so good but compared to Arteza and W&N the himi gouache literally looks like dollar store quality
The 24 color set HIMI Gouache only cost about $15 in Indonesia. This is amazingly super cheap for all those colors and big tube.

It's even cheaper in China. About $6, you can get a 24 color set.
The reason the Arteza didn't give you a good purple is that you used a red and blue that are both cool. one cool and one warm give you a proper purple
On my gosh, that is very eye-opening! I had no idea that's how you could achieve a proper purple. I am honestly ashamed I didn't know that sooner😂

@Glum Sullen the K stands for Key! It essentially means that it’s the “key” colour to provide details to the painting, like details and shading, whereas the others mix to create different colours - it’s a hold over from older printing technologies, you’d use a key plate to add the details
The blue she used is warm - it has a slight yellow note to it (cerulean), compared to a cool blue like ultramarine, which has a red note. The best mixture for purple is magenta (cool) with ultramarine (cool) - it will be dark so diluting it with water or adding white will bring out the colour
That's probably why winsor newton is really expensive. You can clearly see the big difference of color pigments. Very nice review by the way. :)

I suspect it is partially depending on if you are in a country closer to where they are manufactured. I have read that some artists make a point to buy supplies if they travel to Europe since they can get better deals.

Where I live (Germany) you pay about 3-4€ for a paint tube. I can’t believe having to pay more than that for these little tubes
I live in Canada and this Himi gouache set is about $80-90 USD. The import taxes here are outrageous and because of that the selection is also pretty bad. I order from Jackson's Art Supply in Europe and it's been the cheapest way to buy paints for me.

@@naerwend8937 You get way less W&N paint for the price though. If it's the set i think it is you get 10 tubes with 14ml each and the Himi set has 18 cups with friggin 60ml each. That's 140ml of W&N vs 1080ml of Himi, with Himi being almost 8x the amount of paint. Can't find any set of W&N with the bigger tubes let me know if it exists ^^
@@nalcarya yes, that’s the set I was talking about, didn’t find another on Amazon :( Actually, the cups in Himi’s set contain 30ml of paint, but you’re right, there are more colours and the price (1.83€ each vs 3.6€ each for W&N) is lower, that’s why I wanted to buy the Himi, since I’ve never used gouache and thought they were good for a beginner. Though, after seeing this video I don’t know what’s more convenient in terms of quality :/
The purple you get with W&N in comparison with the other brands depends on the different tonality you chose for the primary red. The W&N is a magenta, the orhers are Carminium red

Those are some good looking color wheels. I enjoy my HIMI gouache but would like an upgrade eventually. It’s always amazing to see how all the colors can come out of just three colors. I would be really interested to see a limited 2-3 color painting in your style with gouache!

The acrylic gouache isn't really the same sort of gouache, it's an acrylic paint that has a matte finish to it. Pretty sure Turner has a regular water-based gouache as well, so just be sure to double checke which you're getting!

I do have both Turner and himi, because of a class by glen vilpuu... but in the end, he was like, guys I’m really not sure why your school asked me to teach you guys gouache. Like Cherry Blossom mentioned your reds used in color wheels from the inexpensive gouache are definitely warmer. But I also wonder how much pigments used played into that. You are much more likely to find multiple pigments in primary colors, and single pigment in artist grade, which, of course, would give greater clarity and vibrancy to secondary and tertiary colors. Even so, I may just use Arteza as my springboard into gouache. It's probably the only medium I haven't tried yet. Thanks for the comparison, you've got a new sub. 👩🎨
Great comparison of really great gouache sets. I personally don´t have any Gouache from Arteza yet, but they seem really amazing.
I love the Himi Gouache sets, to be honest, of course, they aren´t artist-grade like the Winsor&Newton one, but still if using the right colors the colors are super vibrant and beautiful
I have the arteza set (60 colors) and I can not express how much I love it! It is my favorite paint I have used so far. Although, that is coming from someone who has mostly used dirt cheap acrylics most of their life😂. But I really do love it, and can not recommend it enough😁
Sophia. Thank you so much. But, I'd like to give you a heads up. Davinci brand is a small American based company of Outstanding Artist Quality oil acrylic, gouache and watercolor paint. They are based out of California and are dedicated to providing the highest quality paint for the least amount of money. Their Gouache line is small but you can buy DaVinci Gouache in 37ml. tubes from about $7.70- $17.70 with a few pigments a bit higher. They curated watercolor sets of various sizes for several watercolor artists and even designed colors for Joyce Hicks and Denise, from Scratchmade journal. It's very, very good paint and a great way to save a lot of money in the states.

The color saturation and color mixing are clearly significantly better and so good to know. I have a 30 year old tube of wn ivory black paint. Calling it a tube of paint is a stretch because it is now basically a rattle.

The W&N is a wonderful gouache paint, even though it is expensive, the quality pigments allows for wonderful colour mixes and because of the pigment strength you don't use as much paint as you might think, they can last somone who paints regular a long time.
18 paints of Himi gouache at my place costs a lil more than 10$. Art supplies is amazingly priced in Vietnam. Even with american and european paints.

In my country, you can get the HIMI one for around 6.28 dollars.... It was actually quite good specially for students who just started... The Arteza one in my country was around 79.54 so as a broke student, I probably won't even think of buying it at this moment 😭🤧... I'm not sure how much the Winsor & Newton here....

Perfect - just what I was looking for and just when I needed it!
You might like the Royal Talens Extra Fine Gouache (not their student grade Art Creations brand). Very creamy consistency, highly pigmented, and very affordable--at least in Europe. All 20 ml. tubes the same price. I have W&N as well and they are stiffer and tend to dry on the palette faster. I find I'm too miserly with W&N with cadmium colors costing 16 euros a tube. The Talens brand binder is potato starch, not gum arabic like W&N. Talens has been suspect for a lack of light-fastness but their online color chart says colors rated with +++ are good for 100 years under museum conditions.
Wow I’ve never even heard of that paint I’ll definitely check it out! Sounds incredible, it looks pretty reasonably priced here in the US as well, $35 for a primary set of 5, definitely something to invest in down the line 😊
@@SophiaMitropoulos Holy cow! While almost everything is more expensive in Europe, in Portugal, I paid 2.90 euros for each tube of Talens gouache recently--that's around $3.45. I originally bought the 5-tube mixing set for around 15 euros--around $18. and that includes the 23% Value Added Tax. I hope you can find some on sale!

also, the main difference with artist grade paints is that they are Archival and Lightfast, which really matters to professional artists if you are selling originals. Many student grade brands do not say what pigments are in the tubes or offer a lightfastness rating. The reason the WN color mixing is more vibrant is because they use less filler in their gouache to bring up the opacity.

I really wish you would have used a colder (more on par with magenta) primary red for himi and arteza. The purple that the two brand mixed came out muddy because you used a warm red. But you know that and which is why I was confused by your purple comments for himi and arteza. Either way WNewton are superior paints no matter how you test them. Thanks for the review!

I personally don't trust paint that does't say which pigments it was made with. At least when trying to paint something somewhat seriously, for practice anything is okay
Nice video! I'm about to get my first artist grade watercolors and I was thinking of making a similar comparison. I have a complicated relationship with expensive materials, I feel I have to be at a super high skill level to even consider using them XD. I feel at ease with the himi set, even though I do feel sometimes they are somewhat slick (not sure how to explain) and muddy at times, but nothing too terrible that can't be fixed. I'm guessing muddiness is not a problem with high pigment and good binder artist quality brands, which I'm curious about, but I feel I gotta level up in painting and color mixing in general before trying them.

Interesting. I have the Arteza and the Holbein sets. Although the Arteza is not expensive, it is easier for me to use than the very expensive Holbein. Being thinner, I can manipulate the Arteza better. But then I am a novice used to watercolor. Thank you for sharing.

I definitely noticed some separation in my Windsor and Newton as well. I’d love to hear your reaction to M Graham if you get them!
Colour depends on the pigment or pigments used in a tube. A cheap brand can name it whatever it likes, but if it’s not made if PB35 it’s not cerulean blue, for example. That’s one reason why you’ll get different mixing results. Then there’s the issue of dyes vs pigments and the fact cheaper brands use fillers. You’ll get more mileage out of Winsor & Newton drop for drop of paint. Corporations know how to make money. If you’re not paying one way you’re paying another. You just gotta decide why you’re painting and what’s the result you’re after. Play is the process, joy is the result. Cheers.
I recently bought the Miya 24-color set for about ~15USD (rough estimation). There are a lot of online stores selling the sets here in my country and depending on which store you buy from, you can save a lot of money.
Good test. I like it. As a German I use Schmincke oil, watercolour, acrylics and guache which is the best German colour brand and I think is comparable to W&N.

I did this same study with himi and arteza. I didn't water down the himi as much as you did (i like mine in a creamy almost acrylic consistency), and all 3 colors we pretty opaque (obviously the yellow not as much) but I definitely mixed a purple using the brighter red and the acid blue I believe 🤔 lol anyway this was dope I've not seen much on Windsor and Newton goauche considering I've only used gouache for about a month so that was dope

I read somewhere that the only significant difference between student/cheap and expensive/artist grade paints is the amount of pigment that is in them. That is the most expensive component of the paint (whether that is in gouache, acrylic, watercolour or oils) and so the more that is in the paint, the more vibrant and opaque it will be (for opaque mediums anyway) and the more expensive it will be too.
So if you were answering a beginner who said that they have X amount of money (say £25ish) and they want to try gouache for the first time, which should they buy, what would your answer be and why?
Is the jelly gouache really just a gimmick to sell the sets or do they have advantages over tubed gouache? (Aside from the ease of their 'grab and go' style, meaning you don't need a separate palette and don't need to mix your own colours so much etc).
If someone has a decent sized set of acrylic paints is it worth trying out gouache? I bought my acrylic paints set (the Magicfly box of 60ml bottles) mainly for painting polymer clay sculptures, as well as trying to learn to paint. This is essentially because they are waterproof once dried so I can layer and use techniques such as dry brushing without lifting the layers below. Is gouache more suited to paintings on canvas or in a sketchbook?
I would love to hear any advice or tips you can share on the two different mediums.
A pack of Winstor & Newton with the three primary colors, black and white costs about 35$ in Norway. Usually art-stuff is more expensive in Norway, so this was nice surprise :)

"Arteza colors pop off the page". Yup! That's the issue I have with them. The colors are garishly neon. You can tone them down by mixing in black, white or a complimentary hue - but why have 60 colors if you have to mix constantly to get natural looking colors?
You cannot rewet the Atreza to soften edges once they have dried. That is why I'm returning them and getting Winsor and Newton. There is more to testing than just opacity and mixing purple.
Omg! I never thought that Arteza was so good, I prefer W&N maybe for the quality and the tradition but Arteza really surprised me. HIMI I think is really lost the money. THANKS
Great video so informative, but, the Arteza and himi reds you chose would never be able to match the one you had from W&N, I believe if you had used a cooler red than what you had the results could have been much more similar but that being said it’s great to know all you have shared so thank you!!
I was so shocked when you said how much the Windsor and newton gouache was, in the UK, it is like £3-£9 (depending on pigment) for a 14ml tube. The primary colours are like £3.50 a tube here.

Oil paint generally doesn't go bad. Still check them for peace of mind though.
How do you figure if your paint has gone rancid?
@@amira921 If it smells funky or looks like it has mould then it's gone bad. This is most common with watercolours and gouache. I believe it can also happen to acrylics.

I have the Arteza 60, beauuuutiful colors and the Himi 24.
I was able to buy a 10 tube set of W&N for 26 € which is very good price + a Cobalt Turqoise tube for 3 € instead of the 10 or 12 it usually costs because it was on sale. I am so grateful since now that set is everywhere from 35 to 50 €

@@lovelyloner3145 I really love it! It has all the basic colors you'd need and it's a split primary set so you have your warm and cool primaries plus yellow ocher, a green, black and white.

You need to use a clean warm red like quin rose to mix nice purples.
I think the purples are worse in the cheaper ones, because the reds are way more orange/darker than the winsor and Newton 😊
Definitely! A true primary "red" is actually much closer to magenta!
I'd loved to have a paintbox as Himi has, but I use Talons gouache. Similar quality as W&N.

I think it’s really interesting how where you are located affects the price of different supplies. WN is not cheap here, but it is not prohibitive and can often be found reduced if you are not in a hurry and can wait for offers to come up.
If it dries in the tube you can scrape it into a jar and use it from there.
Good to know about the drying in the tube! I just used mine moments ago and most of them have dried significantly.

There's a lot less filler in winsor and Newton but most importantly it's light-fast for over 100 years. So I'd say use himi and arteza for fun and keep the W n N for your pro projects
Arteza has a gorgeous violet though, I feel like you’ve really undersold that. Their mauve, lavenders, and violets are all beautiful- and they come in that set, you were just selective with the hues you chose
I’ve been looking at the Himi but so far, after watching lots of UA-cam reviews, I’m not convinced. I love my Winsor and Newton they are just awesome but I don’t want to waist them in sketch books. I’ve bought and used up all the arteza gouache and will never buy them again. Watching your video here it looks like Himi are worse. I always think it’s best to spend money on just a few of the best quality, then buy lots of the bad quality. Winsor and Newton have a lot of colours that are lightfast where the other two student grad are very low or moot lightfast but then that doesn’t matter in sketch books 😊 Thank you for sharing 😀

I just bought the arteza and like the butter feeling while painting. W & N looked great for you. In a review from another they said the arteza didn’t have as bad of a dry down as Winsor did. What do you think?
I love painting whit my 56 himi miya gouache set. Its my favoriete set of himi miya gouache. I am thinkin about buying empty tubes to put the himi miya gouache paint in it so i can take the paint whit me😊😁👋🏾👍🏾🎨

Thats how I have been feeling with the Himi! Like they dry very dull! I really enjoyed this video, I have been contemplating about purchasing higher quality gouache.

Excellent review! $10 for W&N is considered cheap in Canada- I paid $12 a tube. Have you checked out M Graham Gouache?
Try $13.50 for us Aussies. We get sooo ripped off down here.
