This is super insightful Shivani! Helped me in making an informed decision in buying my first ever set of gouache. Can’t wait to see more tutorials and learn more about painting with gouache :)

I wish I could give this video a million thumbs up. I've been trying to find a good comparison for the student grade W&N set and literally couldn't find anything for days. This video was just Wowww

This was SO helpful! Thank you, I was having a hard time deciding whether I’m brave enough to mix my own colors from a primary set, but just seeing how beautifully they responded to mixing and laying down on, I’m now happy to jump on the W&N designer set that’s on sale at Blick. Yay for adventuring into a new medium! 😃

Glad you found it helpful, Christina! Yess colour mixing is amazing with good gouache. I have loads of videos on my channel about colour mixing that you might find helpful. I also have some more content on colour theory coming out in the next few weeks. Stay tuned, and enjoy your new paints! ❤

Thank you for this! I just bought my first set of gouache - just the primary mixing shades + black and white, so I can learn how to mix colors.

Hey Shivani, thanks for this great video! Really well-done and I appreciate how you set up the testing sheet so us viewers can easily compare brands. I love painting with gouache and have both the WN Designers' gouache and one of Himi jelly sets, they're both fun for different reasons. I LOVED that earthy green you created with the WN Designer gouache and am going to try that! Also, so do you have experience using artists' gouache? And if so, how would you compare it to designers' gouache? I've heard they're different AND I've heard they're the same, but I haven't tested any of the brands labeled "artists" grade gouache like Shcmincke or Holbein.

Hi Sarah! I am so glad you enjoyed the video. :) I am really curious to try Himi. I've heard so much about it, but we don't get it here in India. Aside from the brands in this video, I have tried Sennelier and Schmincke but I think those were Designers Gouache as well. Haven't tried too many other options because again, we don't get many in India 😅 So WN is really popular here. And I do love it ❤️

Hi Shivani, thank you for the video.
Reeves has a very long history, one box which I have says since 1766. They used make high quality paints used by major artists, but in more recent times, from my experience at least since the 1960s, they have concentrated on the lower end of the market, making things like powder paint and poster colour used in schools. Their ‘artist’ type products seem to be closer to the student ranges from other brands such as DalerRowney and Winsor & Newton. In recent times they have modernised their look, abandoning the many decades old spotted dog logo and coloured boxes for the ‘r’ logo and mainly white boxes with the text in a modern sans font. I don’t know if this is just a desire for a more modern image, of if they have been taken over by a different company.
That Winsor & Newton student grade set is available here in the UK, but I have only seen it advertised recently- I hadn’t realised that it was student grade, I had previously only seen one grade of gouache from W&N unlike their other types of paint where they make two grades but the student grades have their own names, Cotman for watercolours, Winton for oils and Galeria for acrylics. There’s also Artisan for water mixable oils, but there seems to be no artist grade version of those.
The gouache set does not seem to have a specific name to distinguish it from the designer gouache range, though the box is in the style of the other student products.

Hi Stephen! Wow, thanks for that info. I didn't know that.
And yes, I was confused by the Winsor and Newton Gouache as well because it had no series name as such, and it was way cheaper. I honestly expected the quality to be better than it was, given the brand. But it was pretty disappointing and I think there are better options for student gouache. I know a lot of people swear by Arteza and in India we have a brand called Brustro that seems to be of a similar quality to Arteza (same manufacturer is what I suspect, since both seem to be sourcing from China and white labelling).
