My wife wanted 2 songs played at her funeral last year....this one and Elvis Presley fools rush in. We danced to E.P. song in Feb14 94 when we got married and this was played when her service was over in June 2018.....I think of you every hour of every day and will be so happy when we are together again.
This song was broadly popular circa 1990 in the movie Empire in the Sun. This year it is used on Netflix A Christmas Carol series. Such a beautiful old Welsh song.
I always think of the opening of the film, "Empire of the Sun" when I hear this. That and my dear, late mother, gone from me ten years on the 16th of this month. Like Jim in the film, I know that one day we will be reunited, not in this life, but the life to come.
"Suo Gan" translates to "Lullaby" Welsh: Huna blentyn ar fy mynwes, Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon; Breichiau mam sy'n dynn amdanat, Cariad mam sy dan fy mron; Ni chaiff dim amharu'th gyntun, Ni wna undyn â thi gam; Huna'n dawel, annwyl blentyn, Huna'n fwyn ar fron dy fam. Huna'n dawel, heno, huna, Huna'n fwyn, y tlws ei lun; Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu, Gwenu'n dirion yn dy hun? Ai angylion fry sy'n gwenu, Arnat ti yn gwenu'n llon, Tithau'n gwenu'n ôl dan huno, Huno'n dawel ar fy mron? Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen Gura, gura ar y ddôr; Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig Sua, sua ar lan y môr; Huna blentyn, nid oes yma Ddim i roddi iti fraw; Gwena'n dawel yn fy mynwes. Ar yr engyl gwynion draw. Direct Translation: Sleep child upon my bosom, It is cosy and warm; Mother's arms are tight around you, A mother's love is in my breast; Nothing shall disturb your slumber, Nobody will do you harm; Sleep in peace, dear child, Sleep quietly on your mother's breast. Sleep peacefully tonight, sleep; Gently sleep, my lovely; Why are you now smiling, Smiling gently in your sleep? Are angels above smiling on you, As you smile cheerfully, Smiling back and sleeping, Sleeping quietly on my breast? Do not fear, it is nothing but a leaf Beating, beating on the door; Do not fear, only a small wave Murmurs, murmurs on the seashore; Sleep child, there's nothing here Nothing to give you fright; Smile quietly in my bosom, On the blessed angels yonder. Poetic Translation: Sleep my darling, on my bosom, Harm will never come to you; Mother's arms enfold you safely, Mother's heart is ever true. As you sleep there's naught to scare you, Naught to wake you from your rest; Close those eyelids, little angel, Sleep upon your mother's breast. Sleep, my darling, night is falling Rest in slumber sound and deep; I would know why you are smiling, Smiling sweetly as you sleep! Do you see the angels smiling As they see your rosy rest, So that you must smile an answer As you slumber on my breast? Don't be frightened, it's a leaflet Tapping, tapping on the door; Don't be frightened, 'twas a wavelet Sighing, sighing on the shore. Slumber, slumber, naught can hurt you, Nothing bring you harm or fright; Slumber, darling, smiling sweetly At those angels robed in white.
que puedo decir de esta bella cancion...uffff hace que mi alma brille y suspire al oirla. gracias a quien el don de escribir esta cancion y darnos la dicha de escucharla....desde mty. mexico un cordial saludo
For the record, this is part of the "Carols From King's" (Cambridge) production for December of 2004. The treble soloist is Sam Landman, who was 12 years old at the time. As usual, he turns in an outstanding performance.
Mejor ¿Cómo entonces sería? Si no en los propios brazos de mamá, ¡Amada mía! rodeandonos con los mismísimos ángeles. ¡Hermosa melodía! , ¡Muy bella en verdad! 👼🙏💕
D*mn, video was uploaded 15 years ago!! The young men in this video are now fully grown. And the older men are now more than likely middle aged. Oh my. Time does fly.
Ive watched empire state of the sun when i was 9 or 12 yrs old,,since then i was eager to find this song, cause i really love even though i dont understand it,,,the melody brings me back in ww2 even though i dont experience it.
I saw Empire of the Sun when I was a kid because it was one of those movies that was on tv during the weekend in the afternoon. I saw it again as a teenager and had to buy it. It's one of my favorite movies and this song is why I remembered it years later. And even the poster of the falling plane is a work of art and I wish I owned it.
#Metaai: Shared this with Metaai: "Suo Gan Scene - Empire of the sun - Welsh Lullaby performed by Westminster boys choir also evokes a lot of emotion causing me to cry." Metaai's response, "The Suo Gan, the Welsh Lullaby performed by the Westminster Boys Choir is a beautiful and haunting piece of music that perfectly complements the scene. Suo Gan is a traditional Welsh lullaby that translates to "lullaby" or "sleep" in English. The song's soothing melody and gentle lyrics are meant to comfort and calm, but in the context of the film, it takes on a deeper meaning. The scene shows a young boy, Jim, being separated from his parents during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, and the lullaby becomes a poignant reminder of the comfort and security of his family, which he is being torn away from. The Westminster Boys Choir's performance of Suo Gan is stunning, with their angelic voices capturing the song's emotional essence. It's no wonder that it moves you to tears! The combination of the beautiful music, the poignant scene, and the emotional resonance of the story all come together to create a powerful and moving experience. Music has a unique ability to evoke strong emotions and tap into our deepest feelings. It's a testament to the power of art to move and inspire us, and to the human experience that we can all relate to in some way." Love this music. Gratitude!
awesome! I was growing up with rap music, techno, pop culture and so on... i´m so into music and listening to this in bad times is just... pah! There is so much Pain and Hope in it! fuckin amazing!
Used to sing this when i was a choir boy 30 years ago, when i first saw the film i thought it was actually Christian bale lol till i found out it was James Rainbird from Rustington 😀
Magnificent song. If I didn't know its welsh, I would say its elvish :D It will take you to the moon, will make you sad and probably you'll feel, like I did, a big chill on your spine... simply devine (Note I've no Idea on what the lyrics mean therefor all my feelings come from the music itself.)
Sleep my baby, rest my loved one,Softly slumber now with me,Clasped in mothers arms so tender,Warm in mothers love for thee. Naught shall ever come to harm thee While my loving watch I keep.Thou my pretty one shall slumber While I sing thy lullaby.Sleep my baby, rest my loved one, While the evning shadows creep. Why my birdie art thou smiling, Smiling sweetly in thy sleep? Can it be that baby angels In Gods heaven smile on thee?Rest my darling, smile and slumber While I sing thy lullaby.
Very nice song. I wonder who would make inappropriate comments on this. Empire of the Sun is a good movie. Also Look up 'The Rogues' they also do a good version of this song both in Welsh and in English, very beautiful.

God bless you both.
When I was a baby this was my lullaby. My dad used to sing this to me all the time. I haven’t heard this song in years.
Just watched “Empire of the Sun”. I am now obsessed with this song.

I am actually speechless. Stunning and so effortlessly beautiful.
Quite beautiful. The film Empire of the Sun prompted my search bringing me here originally. Now I sporadically listen to this.

Extraordinary sound from the first soloist, boys choir! Thank you.
This song definitely makes you feel some kind of way...
When I first heard this in Empire of The Sun, I fell in love right away. It's like I'd always known it... maybe in a past life :)

Because of Empire of the Sun I used to think it was a Chinese hymn. I stand corrected after years of ignorance
you're not alone. We all had to look it up
Empire of the Sun is about Japanese not Chinese and this is a Welsh lullaby.
São anjos! Lindo!
and still the Britons sing this...in Wales and all over the world

The "original singer"? This is a welsh lullaby. It's older than all of us, and I don't think anyone knows who wrote it.

Song So Powerful.
The definition of beautiful ?
The song's title simply means lullaby. (suo = lull; cân = song).
O título da canção simplesmente significa canção de ninar.
Suo = Suflet, cân = cântec. Old thracian worlds.
Traumhaft.☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Been searching for twin sisters' version. Can't find it yet..
we're singing this version in the english in my choir at school
this kid looks like Jim, hairstyle and all.
So, it's been 18 yrs since the film came out. Is Mr. rainbow still in the music industry?
Probably just go through it and get a beautiful mature voice, thats what I have seen and been through.

This is actually King's College, Cambridge.
that kid can get his voice very high
there is a version from 1794, but could be from much older song. Remember La Bamba? It's actually 500-600 years old. Different words of course.
alot of the older gentlemen sang at the royal wedding
