- "Suo Gan" is a Welsh lullaby. I did the video arrangement using still pictures with Vegas Video Pro lighting effects which gives the still photos life. The musical arrangement is by Mack Wilberg; the musical performance is by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This is for anyone that recognizes the innocence and beauty of children.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. My daughter (37) died just a week ago. Though she was hooked up to a ventilator and full of tubes, we played this for her and she would cry tears, knowing that she would shortly go to be with her Heavenly Father and leave us and her 3 autistic children to have to deal with this life alone. This video both makes me cry and brings peace to my heart. Peace be with you, my darling girl.
I am so sorry for your lose but so thankful that this video helped, even if in a small way. Your message really touched me. My prayers are with you and your family and thank you for your message. I will never forget it.
Jesus be with us at anytime~
May God bless you all !
She is look at You and she love you
Dear God Janet, bless you, and your grandchildren I hope all has worked out in the last 5yrs since you posted this, may your daughter be at Gods side now .
@Vida dificil,mas digna I love your user name, God bless you
Janet, even 4 years later, I am so sorry for your loss. My mom just passed away a few months ago and reading your post while this song was playing made me cry. I miss my mom as I am sure you still miss your daughter. Blessings of peace for you and your family.
Love it. In my life time I have seen the man with the long hair and whiite robe.Thank-you.
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Its interesting to note that Suo Gan [lullaby] is a traditional Welsh lullaby and was first recorded in print around 1800.The lyrics were captured by the Welsh folklorist Robert Bryan.
Beautifully done and heartfelt ❤
Quite Beautiful. Words fail me.
I sang this in high school choir, first verse in Welsh, second in the approxiate English translation, and closed with Welsh. I've never heard this version, but I agree that it's beautiful and soul-soothing...it was cleansing to sing it and it's cleansing to be able to hear it still.
Beautiful just beautiful
Thanks so much. Glad you like my video.
yes, wonderful and amazing... thank you Jimmy
Sung in Welsh is so much more powerful, Steven Spielberg nailed it in his film empire of the sun.
Guido you are correct.
Although Welsh translation is different than this song
@@Mike-kw2uv That happens a lot. They take a great melody and tack on lyrics in a different language. A "make work" cover. Not exactly an always bad thing, as this vlog shows. Not a great thing, either. Some folks do not know, and likely never will, that this is not the original song at all. I don't know if you are at all aware of Sakamota Kyu's "Ue o Muite Arukou", aka Sukiyaki. The same thing happened. Listen to the original, then the cover by A Taste of Honey, then a much to be preferred cover by Matsuda Seiko, faithful, almost absolutely faithful, to the original lyrics.
Flawless! And perfect for Christmas Eve!
im so glad i found this again!!!! this is without a shadow of a doubt the BEST version of this song.
One of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen and heard. Thank you.
Maravillosa canción. Me recuerda a mi madre que en paz descansa
Absolutely fantastic it made me cry with pleasure at the sound. Brenda Flack
Wonderful !!!
simplemente me encanta, una de mis favoritas de motab, y el video es notable, representa lo que siento al escuchar la música...excelente!
Just absolutly Amazing!
What a beautiful video you made Jimmy. You were so talented in everything you did. I’ve known you most of my life. It’s hard to believe you left this world a few weeks ago. You were such a kind caring person. Will always miss you 💔
It was written by an 'anonymous' composer.
So perhaps it was first sung by a parent living in a little stone cottage in the middle of nowhere. Their little baby just going to sleep, with the wind and rain barely kept out by their modest building. And of course, some hundreds of years ago, those babies that survived under difficult circumstances really WERE miracles
I bet Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous had no idea that their personal little song would be translated/arranged in so many different ways!
Excellent...sublime...Thumbs Up...!!
Being half Welsh, I just love this. I even play the tune on the Pipes: at Guildford Cathedral, on one occasion. Wonderful video - thanks for sharing !
Thanks for including the lyrics. I think they really add to the song when you can read them while listening. Beautiful graphics, too!
BEAUTIFUL , INSPIRING AND PEACEFUL.
Thanks so much. Glad you like the video. Greatly appreciated.
Thank you for putting such nice pictures with the music. This is one of my most favorite songs ever. I love it.
Everything about this is so beautiful !! Thank you for sharing this and best wishes.
What a Masterpiece. I love it that theirs an American translation of the lyrics and vocals.
Wonderful music is simply that... it's a matter of the heart regardless of the language.
i love this song with all my heart and soul. the english lyrics are wonderful and beautiful. ❤❤❤😇😇😇☀☀☀🌹🌹🗽🗽
I agree; the lyrics are very touching! Thank you for your comment.
just beautiful. thank you so much.
Thank you; I do appreciate the compliment.
Amazingly comforting ..thank you so much
Thanks so much for listening and watching. Glad you like my video.
This is compelling and haunting music. I'm so grateful it has been transcribed into English so I can understand the lyrics. Beautiful, tender lullaby. Thank you for uploading this version!
susan you are mistaken these are not the original welsh lyrics
this is an evangelical re-write all new christian fundamentalist
take of the traditional welsh lullaby Suo gan tune only.
the original words for this tune are so much better and reflect a mother's passion and love for her sleeping baby smiling in it's dream on her breast,
how she promises, that no harm will come while she stands guard.
and not to take note of any noise of the wind in the leaves knocking at the door or of the sound of the waves lapping on the shore.
and she thinks why are you smiling my darling
could there be angels with whom you are dancing in your sleep
that's the short of it, of the original welsh lyrics.
Touching.
Muchas gracias.
SPECTACULAR AND MOVING!! Is there anything you don't do like you were born for it!?
Very nice...good job....
Incredible
So bizarre that people would complain about this beautiful song. I sang this with a choir years ago for a Christmas devotional and I broke down crying during rehearsal because it was right after Sandy Hook. The lyrics made me think of those mothers who just lost their babies right before Christmas. I knew they must have thought back to when they first entered the world - how perfect that moment was. How safe they were. If I lost my children, I would desperately want to live those moments again.
Thank you for posting this video. I was able to share it as a suggestion for our choir, not that I'll be able to get the words out this time either. :)
Thank you. The melody and lyrics are absolutely beautiful. Oddly, a few people's responses have ranged from being offended to out right mad that someone would have the nerve to change from the Welch version. I'm sure the Welch version is beautiful but as I told one person, "It's not a competition"! This is also a beautiful version.
It’s terribly poignant. I do love the Welsh, and the English translation of the Welsh I used to sing to my firstborn daughter. But this version is very, very profound. Who wrote these lyrics? These words make the song into a eulogy - a goodbye song, more than just a goodnight song. So painful as a mother to listen to, but so irresistibly beautiful too. I still have my girls and they are very little - 3 months and 2 years old. But I’m already mourning them as I love them so much and I know I will have to say goodbye to them someday. Don’t know when or how, but it will come. These days are fleeting. These are the things a mother thinks about in the night. This song reminds me of the hope of heaven. Thank you.
great!
@musicheart5 Thank you very much for your compliment. The lighting effect really adds a surreal sort of feel to a still photos. The movement of the light is very calming for me as well. I know your granddaughter is comforted by such peaceful melody and words. I've always loved "Silent Night", especially the Mannheim Steamrollers version. I will listen to the MTC version and maybe use it for next Christmas. Thanks again for your compliment.
BE STILL MY SOUL.
This hits me hard!
Thank you for watching and listening. much appreciated.
Thank you.
Well done!
in the movie a japenese soldier says boy you difficult boy,meening so welll
Beautiful. We love our English/Welsh brothers and apologize for the current administration. Most Americans simply hate and deplore what has happened. We are embarrassed and hopefully we can fix in the 2020 election. Bear with us.
Beautiful in both Welsh and English 🥰🙏
I'm used to hearing it in my mothertongue Welsh, but this version is wonderful. 'Suo Gan', and another Welsh song 'Ar Hyd y Nos' ('All Through the Night'), express similar sentiments... a sense of safety. & Your video fits the song like a glove. Well done.
Excellent music, that's all.
Thanks. I posted this as an expression, not a competition but I have gotten complaints because this is in English. It's good to see there are still some sane people out there. Thanks again.
@theboyunder Thanks for your compliment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
@georgiarebelinne Thanks for the compliment; I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I saw the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform this tune Christmas Eve. I was so fundamentally moved by the simple beauty of the piece that I had to do something; this is the result.
There are sadness behind the beautiful and wistful music .
From chaotic Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun .
Which country is yours ?
A. Suo gan is traditionally sung in Welsh but these members are going to struggle to pick up such an amazingly complex language. "And Jesus listening can here the songs I cannot sing!"
@Shadowboy4011 I do appreciate the compliment.
@electricalwilly Thanks for the compliment.
@zsibene
Thank you for your compliment.
@RhiC89
I know - I've sung it many times myself!
There is a difference between translation and transliteration - sometimes the original text has to be sacrificed for a song translation to scan well.
In Welsh, it makes perfect sense and scans perfectly!
@taffish1 Thank You very much.
Jim, You have a wonderful voice and a true talent. Do not soil your gift with rubbish. Do construct meaningful and significant messages of comfort and love that help others to heal, rather than prolong their suffering and pain. Gao San is a song of comfort and strength. I fear that trust in an anointed messiah, though a great, archetypical image, leads only to such agonizing.
I do not hate you and I accept your love as I love you. agape love, in it's truest form. I have many suggestions for music which would compliment your vocal range and need for self expression. Had I your talent, I would want to do likewise, but I have not that skill.
Work with me on this. Let's not be enemies. Use your voice for a greater good.
From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun .
In the neighborhood of Tokyo , most of the cherry blossoms in full bloom have been scattered .
After having been scattered , there are the lacking and pensive atmosphere .
The petals which are scattered , and fell cover all over the area , rivers and ponds and dyes it into pink .
In the endless vibrant night view of Tokyo , the various emotions of 13
million people's sorrow , pleasures , grief , suffering , regret , lamentation and anger are blended together , shining and effulgent as if those feelings were colorful neon lights .
Which are you watching this from ?
Peace!

Hang in there !
@MsDarcyS Thank You
@bracdiver Thank You
great
Thanks you.
Thank you
Right, So it's beyond the talent of one of the best choirs in the World to sing this in the correct language then?, Apparently so... #siomedigiawn
JonnyValleyBoy I suppose they could have learned and performed it in 12 different languages at the same time, but why should they? Personally, I’m glad they did it in English, the language I speak, the native language of America! There are many, many versions in the Welch language and apparently, that’s not enough!
es ist schon etwas besonderes dieses Video
Cairnsification: Sorry to jump down your throat; but, I was inspired by the beautiful work of Mark Wilberg and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as I listened late one Christmas Eve night. All I did was put pictures to music. I'm sorry you can't get past this video being in English but I absolutely refuse to apologize for that.
@1poiuztrewq2 I'm not sure it's used that much in English but I know what you mean and I thank you for the compliment.
Nice song but so much better in it's original Welsh version
Graham Bailey I don’t doubt the Welch version is beautiful, but would be a little ridiculous and completely senseless for me since I do not speak or understand the Welsh language.
Spiritual
is there a beatifuller song?
That being said buddy i'm Welsh/English and have no qualm with a song which is such a part of Welsh culture and could be called as old as Cymru itself being in English. It is merely a translation into English, Just like the Bible and the Book of Mormon
@ziggydamaestro
Eeeeeeasy there Zigggggggggy. Dang, this is fun. Does somebody neeeeed a hug rhetorically speaking. You said, "nothing less than AWFUL" but I assume you mean "something less than AWFUL" or just plain "is less than AWFUL" since “nothing” can’t be less, but “something” can and I assume you want the deeper cut. So Ziggggy, while the lyrics may not line up with where you want them, they are exxxactly where I want them. Sorry, have a nice daaaaay...this is fun.
The beginning sounds like it is from something else. Or is similar to something else. Does anyone know?
English forever, English everwhere, English always!
from the Celtic arts website: "
Sleep, my child, upon my bosom,
It is snug and warm;
Your mother's arms wrapped tightly around you,
'Tis a mother's love lies in my breast.
Nothing shall disturb your slumber,
Nobody will do you harm;
Sleep in peace, dear child,
Gently sleep on your mother's breast.
2]
Sleep in peace tonight, sleep,
Gently sleep, my beautiful;
Why do you now smile,
Smile so gently in your sleep?
Is it that the angels on high
smile upon you as you happily smile?
While you return the smile, still sleeping,
Sleeping in peace upon my breast.
3]
Fear you not, 'tis but a leaf
Beating, beating at the door;
Fear you not a lone wave's
Murmur, murmuring on the seashore;
Sleep, my child, for there is nothing
Here to frighten you.
Smile in peace here on my bosom
At the white angels yonder."
I wonder what is the closest translation? Either way this is such a beauty.
Is this particular music arrangement available for purchase through the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Albums?
Dee Adams it's from Ring Christmas Bells
They sang this in Black Butler....

We'll I suggest you take that up with Mack Wilberg and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Ever hear of them? I'm a musician and obviously you're not. Melodies are not in any language. One has to put, oh I don know, WORDS to a tune before it becomes polarized by a language. By the way, you said that I can't choose a Welsh tune and put english words to it. It's ridiculous that you're telling me I can't do something that over 25,000 viewers have witnessed the contrary. This whole encounter with you remi
english boy!!! english boy!!!

charles packard easter. I dd something....
The magnitude of this choir disappoints me. Where is the harmony? not forgetting the Welsh language.
Sorry that one of the best choirs in the world, disappoints. Apparently, from your statement, the choir's “magnitude” or greatness, disappoints, a very contradictory thing to say. And, forgive me, but there is beautiful, melodic harmony all through this version. I guess we hear what we want to hear. How people can become so closed as to not allowing this beautiful interpretation of a song is baffling. The Welsh language does not own Suo Gan. The Welsh version would make absolutely no sense to me or anyone else in the world, that doesn’t speak or understand the Welsh language! I don't care if this version doesn’t reflect the Welsh's version word for word. That does not lessen the beauty in this version! This song, like all songs, is open to interpretation. My disappointment is in the thinking that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir should only do the Welsh version if even that. It is truly a beautiful version. Sorry you can't hear that in this piece. Absolutely no offense intended; just my humble opinion and observation.
Well then you can go in pout in your corner miss Sally sadness.
Karl have a great day.
a beautiful song, but when I hear it, I think of the brave Japanese pilots of WW2
The lyrics are different
A rose by any other name...
In English? Is this a prank?
if its a welsh song, then why do you feel it should be changed into english? the words should go with the melody, you cant choose one or the other.
lyrics arent as beautiful in english as the welsh meaning.....great vid by all means :)
Although it is admittedly a lovely version, it has - very unfortunately - nothing to do anymore with that beautiful Welsh lullaby which, incidentally, has very lovely lyrics - so why the need to write a new song? Just to give it more of a religious connotation? Pity
Your a pity loser.
NOT IN ENGLISH!
They wrote a whole new song for this version. Has nothing to do with with orginal Welsh words. Shame!
I've read the English translation of the Welsh version. The words are truly beautiful; but, I respectfully disagree that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's version is shameful. Those words are equally beautiful and fits the melody so well that I can't imagine anyone thinking of that version as being shameful. Those words would be beautiful if they were spoken by a trained parrot. I took the tune on it's face value never dreaming somebody would find shame in that version.
Thanks. I've been shocked at the people apparently being offended by these words. To me, this version is truly beautiful, music and words. And, I'm sure the original version is also beautiful. I would hope there is room in this world, in this tune for additional beauty!
Jo Aelfwine, I completely agree with you, and it is a shame .
the choir struggle to fit the words to the tune, to lazy to sing the welsh
'not enough god in the original it seems. the english version is a literal
translation and cannot be relied upon to convey the welsh meaning of a mothers love for her sleeping baby smiling in it's dream.
all lost in this god soaked travesty, a terrible shame indeed.
I know what i like and don't like this knock off and a blatant slander to the original, yes there is mention of angels in the welsh original
but their in the service of a different emotion, that of unbridled
mother love for her child .this is not a chapel tune.
but a lullaby . I call this theft . there are plenty of beautiful hymns
so there is no need to steal this tune and paste and tack rubbish and ill thought lyrics, as the original welsh is a very well thought out poem
and to my mind cannot be bettered as it is reasoned perfect.
and mr wooten wouldn't know a good hymn if it came bit him on the nose, trying as he has, to defend these very poor over-sentimental, over-emotional, mawkish,and saccharine soaked blather that tries to pass as poem . the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. are nevertheless a very good choir but these lyrics are so poor that it is beyond even their formidable talent to pull it from the flames where it so deserves to be.
so there's my two-penneth.and not being nasty.
old bladder Horn Wow! You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. But, if this is your idea of "not being nasty" you must be a joy to be around! As far as your rather offensive and personal "not nasty" remark about me not knowing a good hymn if it bit me on the nose: I didn't go looking for a hymn. I heard this one Christmas Eve and was inspired by "this piece" and this piece alone, to make this video to honor my beautiful, young daughter. It wasn't a contest like some of you narrowed minded people seem to think, to one-up your precious Welsh tune. Please feel free to NEVER listen again! It is after all within your control. Thanks for your somewhat hateful, closed minded opinion. There surely is no shortage of that today in this world!
yes' i'm really a joy-full person at heart,even if do say so myself. happy as the day is long am i. every day is a new adventure for me, i cherish every moment.
and hate no one. also i enjoy every emotion and practise each
one most every day and never cling to grudges or petty hatreds.
i live a sober and drug free life, i love my family and friends ,
i care and have care for my neighbours. i envy no man his good fortune.
i do not steal or thieve other peoples ideas or thoughts and always let it be known and give recognition to the originator if known to me.
from sun up to sundown i am content for the most part.
and the nose part we call that a jest or humour ,
i hope it didn't bite you too hard on that appendage .
and i being not an American have a different background and upbringing from you.
and have a musical spectrum slightly at odds to your own taste.
Suo gan is not a christmas tune here in wales.
it is a grand poem about a mother's unconditional love for her baby .
while the tabernacle choir sing an evangelical to the tune structure it is nevertheless a different song and not a lullaby
and lullaby in the welsh language is pronounced as Suo gan.
the choir need to give a good name to their own poem,
and give credit where credit is due to this traditional welch tune
look at yourself now, in the mirror if you want to see hatred is my advice to you .
as that is the one emotion i do not foster .
I could go on forever, but there is no need.for you are the one with the froth on his lips and not i'.
feel free to reply if you feel the need .
PS
smile every day as it's free and costs nothing
oh and the , `not being nasty`that is welsh humour as well.
i was only practising boy i had no intention of being hurtful.
Lovely choir, but way over arranged. Hey kids, it's a lullaby.
These aren't the lyrics. This is a Welsh lullaby NOT a gospel song. Once again Christians steal. My mother used to sing this song when I was a child. This version pisses me off.
+Political Exposé A mother told me she played this video over and over for her dying daughter. It calmed her during her during her last few hours in this world. Does that piss you off as well!
It is sad that a strong and resilient woman who has suffered a great loss has turned to silly emotional pleas such as yours to further her suffering. That pisses me off. Yes.
What is sad is your intolerance! I read the original Welsh lyrics and they are truly beautiful. Still, it doesn't warrant your hate-filled, childish response! Please feel free to never listen or watch again. You definitely don't need the aggravation that accompanies a lyric change.
Wow. Give it a rest. If you have a problem with the Christian overtones, go look for a secular version.
@@JimmyWooten I couldn't agree with you more. When my mom passed away just a few short months ago, we sang several gospel hymns to bring her joy and comfort IN HER LAST FEW MINUTES. Someone that gains comfort for a dying loved one needs and deserves a little latitude don't you think. The other person who said they were p o'd by the English translation of this song really has some growing up to do, amen?
Well they stole cymru why not take this.are signs coming here now say welcome to wales no realy your welcome to it.and to the little boy who english forever no mate what you mean is german forever lol fool learn your history first
Too slow. And so much better in Welsh. These lyrics are awful.
Some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope!
I like ALL the versions of this song. You know what? I even made up some of my own lyrics! I do that with songs that I sing to my babies! That’s the beauty of folk music. Folks just be making music and singing about what they care about. It’s fun. A lot of people here need to lighten up!
Michael Shelby Suberlak Are you being judgemental about me being judgemental? 😆
