"Empire of the Sun"
Composer: John Williams
*Music originally from Welsh lullaby with an unknown composer
This scene with the music breaks me. The boy's father passes right by him. Only his mother knows her boy.
It's the first time he closes his eyes. Because he finally feels safe.
Movie was extremely underrated. Watched this when I was 9-10 years old Christian Bale captures whatever character he portrays with absolute perfection. The ending is one of my, if not the most, emotional of all time.
My God this scene still gets me, every time... one of my favourite films of all time, totally authentic, an absolute masterpiece.
I saw ET in Manhattan, NYC. Not a dry eye in the house. I saw this in San Francisco. Not a dry eye in the house. Spielberg can bring your emotions strongly to the surface.
Yes. The moment he can finally close his eyes, cradled in his mother's safe arms. Perfectly done.
yep classic film, amazing early bale movie and i find myself whistling this tune quite often.
Tear-jerkingest scene ever!
Me, too!
This scene wrecks me every time. One of the most emotional closing scenes ever.
I now only notice that many children s parents never arrived...
You need to see the film artificial intelligence!!!!
This movie moved my heart forever!
Tears roll down my eyes wth this scene, truly wonderful and emotional. Just love this film. ❤
What a fine actor Christian Bales was (and is) at such a young age.
And of course, Spielberg.
He's in shock. He's been separated from his parents for more than three years. The camp he was in was running short of food, so he experienced near-starvation conditions. The song is a Welsh lullaby.
Yet he became a survivor - the tough savvy black marketer understudy to John Malkovich. This scene he goes back to the child he buried to stay alive in the camps.
When he embraces his mother it's the first time we see him close his eyes. He finally feels safe.
@@dominicpardo4783 And he can rest...
I alway cry,when i watch this scene.
It is 100% pure, beautiful humanity.
Empire of The sun
A powerful, emotional movie to end a great movie.
It makes me laugh but also proud. This song is actually Welsh. .........
Cymru am byth ❤
Grande Christian Bale questo attore ha sempre avuto un gran talento dimostrandolo in questo film
The song is Suo Gân, a Welsh lullaby by an unknown composer/songwriter, sung in Welsh. The words are appropriate to the circumstances of the film although initially shown as a chapel choir performance (it's not religious although often assumed to be). Verse one:
Sleep my darling, on my bosom,
Harm will never come to you;
Mother's arms enfold you safely,
Mother's heart is ever true.
As you sleep there's naught to scare you,
Naught to wake you from your rest;
Close those eyelids, little angel,
Sleep upon your mother's breast.
Jim once said in the concentration camp, "He can not remember his parents' face." He wants to look and touch his mother's face again. The suffering has come to an end
I wonder if he ever joined the Air Force like he always dreamed of doing?
@@andrewcabral963He became a writer. J G Ballard.
That's nice.@@JaneNewAuthor
John Williams es un autentico genio
I love this movie why isn’t on tv ?❤😢
Nueve meses viviendo con el en su panza y despues d tanto tiempo sin verlo claro k lo reconocio la sangre llama y el amor d una madre mucho mas k final tan conmovedor
Incorpora com a mais absoluta perfeição o espírito do filme.
great singers and film
no hay muchas mas situaciones en la vida en las que se pueda sentir mas emocion
He can rest now.
Eu adoro esse filme, essa canção e toda a transformação de "Jim" (Christian Bale) durante seu sofrimento na guerra quando ele foi separado de seus pais .
Great Spielberg film, although the film should have ended when Jamie closes his eyes. That sequence afterwards deflates that beautiful moment and always felt pointless to me.
I was thinking about that last scene many times and then, I just realized that the baggage floating over the sea it's just a reminder of how about the material things have no value of you compare it with the real life situations.
@@kn71yndk Neat point, though I still would have loved ending the film earlier, given how emotional that moment was and how long the film is. overall But, hey, I'm not Spielberg!
Not a dry eye in the house
Home, is your mother's arms.

To my lullaby surrender
Warm and tender is my breast
Mother's arms with love caressing
Lay their blessing on your rest
Nothing shall tonight alarm you
None shall harm you, have no fear
Lie contented, calmly slumber
On your mother's breast, my dear
Here tonight I tightly hold you
And enfold you while you sleep
Why, I wonder, are you smiling
Smiling in your slumber deep?
Are the angels on you smiling
And beguiling you with charm
While you also smile, my blossom
In my bosom soft and warm?
Have no fear now, leaves are knocking
Gently knocking at our door
Have no fear now, waves are beating
Gently beating on the shore
Sleep, my darling, none shall harm you
Nor alarm you, never cry
In my bosom sweetly smiling
And beguiling those on high

What's this song got to do with John Williams? It's a Welsh folk-song from centuries ago.
His arrangement.
@@steveweinstein3222 Not. Listen to Welsh choirs. It's exactly as song in the Valleys.
@@isabellajones8535 ..... I think he still has to do the musical arrangement according to matching the music to the scenes, etc.
Even so, he did the music for the rest of the movie. I imagine he put this in, too.
This was actually not arranged by John Williams, it was John McCarthy
It's an incredibly touching scene, but seriously? You would only organise this mass meat market for estranged parents and kids when the kids were so damaged by internment they had forgotten their own names, and there's no evidence of that
It's called "fiction."
Not fiction, semi-autobiographical. J G Ballard.
Remember they'd been fighting a war for many years, they weren't exactly organised.
