Anyone who wants to learn this. Go and get a plastic whiffle bat and learn the motion properly first then it’s an easy transition to a real slugger once you have a fluid motion. So much easier developing that when your not worried about gaffing your fingers with a spinning slab of wood or aluminium Seriously I got this down in an hour
An important detail you might've missed is the initial swing before the spin. When the bat gains speed from the swing then gets spun from the handle the sum of the forces from its top and its bottom cancel out to make it spin right around its center which makes it a lot easier to catch since it will roughly be in the same place where you let go of it.
I wonder what was going through Mike's head when he was like "You know what would be a great idea? Swinging an aluminum bat indoors with 0 practice at all"

Over a few weeks of building a shed/barn I was able to go from maybe 4-5 swings and the occasional bent nail to single swing driving 12 penny nails with never a bent nail. Felt good
I like this a lot, and it seems like you figured it out well enough in the end, but I think starting with the concept of spinning the bat was the issue here. It's about adding a spin mid-way through a regular normal practice-speed swing, not about spinning the bat the bat. It only really works when you're already moving the end of the bat at the same speed it's going to be spinning around at. You're utilizing the momentum of the bat with some creative hand motions to get it do a 360 mid-way through a swing. To the end of the bat, it's still doing the same thing it always was... just in a different trajectory
Although I don't play baseball, (I play badminton which is all about swings), I can clearly see that Mike wasn't swinging the bat in an optimal trajectory for maximum momentum. I imagine that this spinning would be a lot easier if the bat had enough momentum to begin with?
@@howardkong8927 Definitely, yeah. The key to doing this trick is to just sorta kick the handle out and around in a 360 as you're swinging around. Because the end of the bat is heavy, when you sorta flick the handle backwards out of your hands as it's going forward, it just goes around in a circle around the heavy end and comes back

just found this video after watching you help Tom learn to ride a bike, impressive dedication. as a lifelong baseball fan, holding a bat since age 7 or so, definitely it feels like the "secret sauce" you're missing here is the correct form to begin when swinging the bat and following through. Which makes sense, British Baseball is an oxymoron, but definitely at least spending a good 10-20 minutes nailing the fundamentals of the swing would give you a much better result. at the end of the video, it basically looks like you're just sort of tossing the bat to yourself with a spin, not finding that axis of rotation that represents the midpoint of the swing. but it's easy to criticize, and it doesn't take away from your efforts, it's commendable just to handle and learn to do something cool with sports kit that's brand new to you

I am a straight male who has learned how to crochet and to knit. I now know how to crochet relatively well. I have made my niece a menagerie of animals, which grows by one every Christmas. I made my sone his first teddy bear, and while in the NICU with him I made him a baby blanket. While my brother was undergoing chemo, I made him a blanket with a semi-celtic design. This past year I tought myself how to knit, and made myself a cable knit sweater. These are skills which do not require much in the way of tools, and which can also be practiced with very little dedicated space. They can be learned relatively well on UA-cam. If it is a rainy or cold day, these are things to do while staying indoors and watching TV. They may not impress anybody at a party, but when you gift someone a blanket, or sweater, or crocheted elephant, it is something special. Or when somebody asks you where you got your sweater, and you can tell them that you made it yourself. Perhaps you would be interested in learning how to knit, and choosing a project that you would like to make for yourself?
I feel like you sold yourself a bit short on this one, the whole reason the trick is cool is because it looks like a baseball swing but with a spin in the middle, yours never really had the follow through, just the build up and the spin. Still cool though.

While you achieved the spin and catch, I don’t really think you’re actually achieving the illusion of doing it during a full swing. You should learn how to properly swing a baseball bat first. This will help with a few things: - In a swing with good technique, the bat stays on the same plane anyway so all that spinning should be nice and flat. - while the swing you saw might be perceived as an “upward angle,” it actually isn’t. The bat starts high with his hands up near his shoulders, it’s imperative you don’t drop your hands before initiating your swing. And then since the follow through will also be up high, the leading elbow makes it look like he’s swinging upwards, but he’s not. The bat is being driven through the zone by his hands (obviously once he initiates the trick, not so much) and the swing is staying on the same axis all the way through. But there is no upward motion to the swing. It is direct and flat, and if anything actually the bat is angled down, AND THEN he follows through high.

But there is no upward motion to the swing. It is direct and flat, and if anything actually the bat is angled down, AND THEN he follows through high.
@King Pistachion baseball isn’t boring just because you think it is. In my opinion, basketball is really boring, and I cringe every time I see the nba on tv.
King pistachion language: Basketball is really boring. Do baseball tricks instead
@King Pistachion imagine liking your own comment
@King Pistachion this is just you hating on baseball
Alright, I think this needs to be asked: When are we going to see Mike Boyd vs Mike Shake? Battle of the Mikes, champions of learning.
It should be a thing
We should dance together Mike! I think you'd kill it 😁
What if my name is mike

If he responded. You might as well gimme a call. I’m sure learning some dance moves will be great.
@@c00kiec18 You should dance with us too!
You Know what? Your videos are great and You are a person I lookup to
And I'm gonna take my time learning art
Thanks to you I feel better now
Thank you.
Sincerely,a very happy Viewer.
Mike is the most interesting man in the world, just try to wrap your head around how much stuff this guy knows how to do.
After playing baseball for 9 years, I developed this skill automatically
I think his realest skills are PERSISTENCE and CONSISTENCY and that's kind of his channel
The sentence we all await to hear: “This is day 1, hour 0”
I remember seeing this move in the baseball scene of the first twilight and have been mesmerized by it since!
I played in the baseball world series twice (team austalia, il 2018, jl 2019) and remember learning this trick. Very fun. Over time ive learned to do double spins and triple spins while putting them into combos between the legs, behind the back and whatnot. You can also bounce the knob off certain floors as part of other tricks. Would recommend doing this on grass:)
Love your vids as i have for the past few years,
I’m so glad you said “certain floors” because that’s the truest thing I’ve read all day. As baseball players you spend a lot of time standing around… but bat tricks are by far the most impressive looking sideline/dugout pastime! And for an Aussie! Good on ya mate! From the US!
@@macdaddy606 cheers mate, it always felt cool but pretty useless, until 1 day when a mate challenged me to do a bat flip blindfolded to see who carries the bucket if balls back from the cage. We were all shocked that it can be done blind with a mild amount of muscle memory but i was just happy not to carry balls lol
@@tyspaulding2025 once you get it right you can do it in your sleep. It was wild to see how much not knowing how to properly swing a bat slowed his progress. I mean we both know he didn’t do a proper spin but for a guy who’s never played ball it wasn’t the worst I’ve seen… still a little painful at times 😂
Hey Mike, you should try and build a fpv drone and fly it. This may sound easy but trust me it is not. I want to get into FPV and it would be cool to see someone like me (no experience) to try this skill.
Any chance we could Callab somehow? Love your stuff bro!
Lol, you’re late.
@@redhelmetsclips6297 so true
Callab
Are we going to see a bit more of bike trials stuff?
make the videos longer please, more backstory as it was before and all the days showing and just more context. just like the muscle up video! i love that one
2:15 u got me on that one 😂😂😂😂
How many skills have you remembered and how many have you forgotten over lock down? Cue rocky montage? 😂
U know there’s something good coming up when he hasn’t posted in 4 months
Negan: **strokes beard** "interesting"
Lmao love the twd reference
@@xPhantom_404x 😂 thank you
You, I like you
ohh man the time effort and patience you showed in the tricks is just mind blowing
Marks videos are the definition of practice makes perfect
yeah marks
0:34 "off the bat"... Both literally and figuratively 🤯
I think it would be really cool if you learned how to infinity spin a pen.
Gotta do this myself, thanks for the suggestion :D
Imagine meeting mike at a party, youd be entertained for hours
Josh makes it look so smooth and fluid! Well done for learning and getting it looking good
i swear mike is the living embodiment of skill share
I love how he learns so many things In such a short time yet it took him 6 days to learn that maybe he should move outside 😂😂
Come on bro, that was only halfway complete. You have to be able to do a full proper swing like the original video.
Right? Kinda disappointing. He literally just learnt to spin the bat, not doing so in a way that looks like you're hitting a baseball
He's getting lazier with his attempts
Well, he is getting older you know...it's easier to learn something at a young age.
I don't think that's possible without lots of training :)
@@aarond23 I thought that’s the point of this channel? The whole reason he times himself. Learning to do something half assed is completely worthless.
Like being able to do a shorty version of a great magic trick and being proud of that fact.
Absolutely lazy.
Dont worry guys, he’ll learn something new again eventually… 😔
I’m starting to get worried
here he uploaded a video lmao
@@just_porgs4276 about 6 hours after you said this he uploaded
Hey man! I’ve never thought to myself that I’ll ever comment to some UA-camr or whatsoever, but i really enjoyed watching your video. Keep it up🙌🏾
Bro you are SO uncoordinated, I learned this in the first hour!
Mike? Where'd you go?
Swinging the bat "up the way" is so Scottish! 😂
Normally they're used to using them on people rather than balls up there.
So did he learn everything?
I think so
Well edited well produced. Thoroughly entertaining. Thanks for your time and efforts on this interesting video. Cheers.
That is so awesome, I absolutely love the concept of you learning new things just because you can
alternative title : *Mike Boys hurting himself for 7 minutes*
I miss Mike, hope he's doing ok
What makes this even more interesting, is that baseball is not played for the most part in Great Britain correct? So it's not like you even had experience with a bat before this growing up, like most American boys.
Finally.Sometimes İt is hard but if you never give up.You'll do it.
👍👍🏿👍🏽👍👍🏾
I came here for all the knuckle bustin'. Great job, Mike!
So three things. 1: I don't know what it says about me, but I laughed every time that bat hit you and caused you pain. 2: Bravo for learning that trick, it's pretty sweet. 3: As a road cyclist, you've cemented my opinion that large cycling glasses only look cool when you're on a bike and should never, ever be worn anywhere else.
When we needed him most, Mike vanished. Come back Mike, we miss you.
What happened to him why is he taking forever to make a video?
well hes gone
Best man on UA-cam ! Perfect work
I have request this trick long time ago to you , and finally you make it! 😂
My takeaway form this video: Scotland looks beautiful in the summertime
All 1 afternoon of said summertime. :-D
For a second I thought he was gonna do the "I threw my bat but it lands standing up" trick...this wouldve been a long video

Where are you bro?
You’re apprehensiveness is so funny to initially see it makes me think back to when I first saw this and wanted to learn it just a 12 yr old punk without a care who or what he hit got it in 3 swings
We used to do this all the time with soft-toss practice. We only did half rotations (started holding the barrel), but it was fun to do it and hit the ball. I'd like to think it helped with bat-to-ball technique
I'm not gonna lie, I genuinely thought this was something most people could just do
No you didn't
"What you really need to learn this trick is some raycons"
Uhh... I think maybe you need to wear some gloves. Sponsor aside, that seemed to be the biggest lesson from your painful failures. "Watch your fingers"
If he starts at hour zero, why does he not also start at day zero? Also #FloridaMan at 4:59
Because its like: Day 1, Hour 0, Minute 0, 1st Second or something like that
Denim shirt, below the knee shorts, socks and sandals (4:00): magnificent.
As usual - great video.
Mike Boyd channel is all about learning and I'm all about everything I want to learn too. And I thought about it too if I'm gon' have a channel it's all about learning.
