When I was young I used to love going into a sporting goods store ( or maybe Sears), and checking out first baseman gloves.Other than of course a catchers glove, the first baseman’s’ glove always jumped out at you. Growing up in the SF Bay Area, my idol was Willie McCovey. I agree, it’s awesome to see the hidden ball trick properly executed!
AR Canada - The 1st baseman did have his foot in foul territory, but there's actually no penalty for that happening. So no, time should not have been called. The proper way to handle that is to have a coach bring it up with the umpire and the umpire will then bring it up with the fielder so that he can get it corrected. If the fielder continues to do it, then the umpire can direct him to correct it otherwise he risks being thrown out of the game.
Hilarious that the Wichita pickoff worked to the first base side AGAINST Wichita! My son's team did this twice in the same Legion ball season. Worked once .... second time against another team they got bit.
This is why baseball is the best game ever invented. Even though nothing is going on, the game is still under way. You never know what's going to happen or when.
I want to say the Uribe one was a particularly good instance of heads-up play by the defense. As the video shows it at least, It looks like Uribe only had his head down for a second or two (not with his back turned, getting up from a big slide, etc) and the fielders went thru all their machinations right in front of him.
Some of the plays were truly trick plays, so wouldn’t be part of regular baseball strategy. I’d assume they try the occasional hidden ball trick at random or because the baserunner has a habit of wandering off the base so it’s worth trying (I’d guess there are plenty of times where the fielder thinks about it but doesn’t try, hence it wouldn’t even be noticed by the announcers). A few of these plays were definitely not tricks but just heads up ball and that’s where I’d say the strategy comes in. But yes, the amount of things going on at the same time makes it the most fun sport to watch IMO.
I can remember a Red Sox game in the Eighties--I don't remember the opponent--when Bill Buckner was the runner on first. The camera happened to be on him when he was just about to take a step off the base, and he suddenly stopped and grabbed the opposing first baseman's glove and looked in it to see if he still had the ball. He didn't, so Buckner proceeded to take his leadoff. He was a first baseman himself, and wasn't going to fall for that trick.
Unnecessary to grab the 1st basemen's glove, just don't step off the base until the pitcher is on the rubber. If a pitcher steps on the rubber without the ball, it is a balk and he gets the next base.
@@joshuabailey3819 to be a balk the pitcher has to start the windup and his raised leg has to make movement toward home plate he can stand on the rubber all day long and throw to any base as long as he hasn't made a stepping motion towards home plate
I don't feel as bad. I got caught on one when I was on third base and wanted to score. Our man on first base attempted a steal and the catcher jumped up with what I thought was a throw to second to get him, so I took off for Home. What he had done was to throw the ball high enough to look like a throw to second, but the pitcher jumped up in the air and caught it and had me dead to rights. Seeing the Pros being caught makes me feel better.

UA-camr, he means the first base coach, the guy that stands near 1st and tell the runner to go, stay, slide, ect, should have been paying attention, and told the runner to stay on base. Seeing as he is staring at the first baseman, and facing the pitcher, things like that shouldn't happen and almost never do if they are paying attention.
Played in a softball game at third base. The ball was still in the outfield. I went to the bag, making it look like the throw was eminent, this forced the running coming in to slide and by the time he got up it was too late to head home.

Here's one we used. A baserunner on second. The shortstop would go to the base as a possible pickoff and then would continue back to his position by moving in front of the runner. The runner would be distracted for a second while the second baseman moves to second base and the pitcher would throw to him, for the pickoff.
