i KNOW there's a spelling mistake in that opening sketch and that time moves all weird like a christopher nolan movie WHATEVER also please subscribe my manager said if i don't hit a million by the end of the year they'll make me do hide and seek with a rehydrated cave bear
so this thought has pretty much nothing to do with the actual point of the video, but as you were talking about game shows, I couldn't help but think about Survivor. That show is now on its 41st season, which is fucking WILD, and a thing I find really interesting about it is that while it started off as "a game where you need to outwit, outlast, and outplay to win a million dollars" now it is "a game where you need to outwit, outlast, and outplay to win Survivor." The money is still a part of it, and obviously people want to win it, but as time has gone on and more and more people have connected to the show, the money has become secondary. People like the Romantic idea of going out and surviving in the wild all while trying to make alliances and outwit every other player. The prestige of being a survivor player or winner has become a far bigger motivator than the money, and idk that is fucking bonkers. I genuinely think that if Survivor took the prize money out of it, enough people would still audition for the show that they'd be able to get close to the same quality of cast that they get now. Almost everyone who goes on the show is a super fan and it seems like survivor prestige is more valuable to them than actual cash. There is probably a good tie to capitilism=bad in here, but I am too tired to parse it out. Would love someone else to do the rest of the legwork.
I highly recommend Intelexual Media’s video called “A Short History on American Celebrity” My argument is that they would do it for fame, if not the $ (and that video is my source for that argument)
The people that go on survivor are also not poor people, these are people wealthy enough to take a couple months off work and still have a place to live and a job when they get back, reality show contestants are a different breed
There is a version of survivor that exists without the prize money, college survivor. A lot of large universities have a club that does tribals and challenges but does not have the surviving aspect. The payout is really small too usually $50-100. I was a part of one at my school. It was a lot of fun but very stressful. I know that Uconn, U Migh and U Maryland all have seasons recorded and on youtube.
I really enjoyed your thoughts on Squid Game! South Korea is in a very rough situation which unions and workers-rights. The reason why Gi-Hun can't get a steady over the table job is because South Korea allows employers to discriminate against strike organizers, meaning if you strike once and lose your job it's near impossible to get another, especially in the same industry.
My wife's Korean and has family there. People don't realize how fucked up their labor laws are. Like they just changed from 68 to 52 work hours weekly but no one abides by them anyway and being shamed into 80 hour work weeks isn't uncommon.
@@josephmatthews7698 Yeah beyond the anti-union laws and shutting down leftist organization, Korea has an insane work culture. In the same way that America has an odd culture around aggregating wealth.
I know that Ro fully disallows Bo Burnham comparisons, BUT she does a refined better version of what he was trying to do. I'm not saying she got the idea from him, she's better at it anyway Just the introspection cinematic photography homemade with original music and clever lighting type thing
Uncertainty is the scariest headspace to rest at, but it's also the inevitable result of learning. You wanted to be a moral person under capitalism? The more you care the more you learn the bad news about everything that made your life what it is.
Damn. This was such a good video, Ro. It really helped me with trying to piece together why I’m not a fan of Mr. Beast’s content despite having little issue with him as a person. He’s always very generous to people, but he does it for content. But at the same time you know in the back of your mind that producing said content is what allows him to continue being generous in the first place. It’s such a bizarre and conflicting cycle. It isn’t Mr. Beast’s content, itself, that bothers me, but the circumstances surrounding why his content exists in the first place. Like a ”where did we go wrong?” type of feeling, you know?
@@Tsukiru reminds me of those articles like "coworkers band together to give their vacation time to single father so he can visit his child with terminal cancer"
Mr. Beast Commented on this in a podcast and said basically he publishes it for content so he can make money and reinvest and do it again, while also stating 100% of the earnings goes back into making videos and his company.
this. we've come to a point where you have to monetize the very act of charity in order to help people. its just an example of how we have to exploit each other and even ourselves tbh just to function in this society. it requires some level of cognitive dissonance to support it... but thats most choices we make under capitalism too tbh. we all buy stuff made in ways we dont agree with and work for companies who's morals we despise, but its what we have to do to eat and pay the bills. but people arent usually excited about that like they are mr. beast videos... its jarring to see people so comfortable in such unfair conditions
one of the most interesting game shows i've ever seen was called, like, Total Forgiveness or something from Collegehumor, where two queer comedians basically made up the rules to their own game show and got their boss to fund it to pay off part of their student debt. and even with all those safeguards in place - they LITERALLY made the rules themselves - it still was so stressful and genuinely hurtful that it almost ruined their friendship. like, it started out as a dark comedy kind of "ha ha ain't it funny that this is the only way we can pay off our debt" thing, but it very quickly became "when my friend suffers, i prosper, and even though we both agreed, i feel fucking AWFUL." imo, it's 1000% more relevant to the themes of squid game than the mr beast vid. (and the ending was uplifting as fuck and made me cry.)
Yes Ally and Grant!! The fact that they literally had to choose their friendship over money at the end to save their relationship... also I have a crush on Ally loll their work is really good
I'm still watching it, but I think it's pretty telling that the first episode ended with Ally recovering from an emotionally draining conversation with their ex and Grant being covered in blood.
10:20 here's something to dislike about him- in April this year he collaborated with Mark Rober for a charity live stream and all the money went to an shitty organization that wants to cure autism and encourage harmful practices like ABA... so yeah :D
thank you for putting it into words. there’s something dystopian and disturbing about a world in which something like a game show is legitimately one of the only ways someone can break out of the machine of capitalism. it sucks that someone’s future can be dictated by someone with more money and power like that, even if those people are genuinely doing something amazing and kind. it’s like when you hear those stories of like an elementary schooler raising money for their friends or family to eat or pay a medical bill through a lemonade stand and it gets turned into an inspirational story when in reality there’s something deeply wrong with a world in which a child has to work like that for basic human needs. it’s i think generally good when someone like mr beast can give someone a chance like that but the fact that we live in a world where he has that power to change someone’s life in a way they can never hope to accomplish on their own i think really shows how deep in the gears of capitalism people are. also mr beast looks like if a ferret had a humansona
@@s0Shi He does so much to help behind the scenes. He is actively running his main channel at a loss. We made content out of a popular show on netflix.
Idk I don’t think he deserves to mocked for his appearance. He’s not great, but I also think he’s not so bad that attacks on his physical appearance are warranted.
"it's not profound! it's very simple!" strikes a big chord with me. i was trying to explain to my partner why i get so angry and so burnt out trying to talk about world events and stuff, and i think that quote is a big part of why. any time you wanna talk about shit to someone there's a 50/50 chance they'll either just superficially agree with you or they might straight up try and argue with you about the very fabric of fucking reality. it's not a profound observation that capitalism sucks ass! it literally just *is*!! it's an observable fact and i'm so tired of having to treat it like it's a thesis to be proved!!
Totally agree. People who genuinely believe capitalism is perfect are just painful to speak to, but also those people who are like “well, if I were to play devil’s advocate…” make me homicidal.
@@yepthatsegg3604 omg if i had a hammer for every time ive heard the devil's advocate line. like no one is making you do that, actually. the devil does not need your help!
Oh god I love Ro’s experimental take on a commentary channel. Every time she comes back there’s always something now to show! I love this take on the regular pop culture commentary channel. Ro and D’Angelo are pretty much the new faces of commentary and I’m excited to see where they go with this medium.
I think its the feeling of a transaction. Even if it's free, even if it's a gift, there is always something you have to give in order to get. People are being filmed for content and Mr Beast made all that money back and even more. It doesn't feel right yet it should. He didn't do anything wrong, he gave away money. But the unsettlement still doesnt digest.
You’ve somehow managed to be able to verbally express exactly how I feel about Mr Beast and his content and I am so grateful I found your channel! It’s so interesting to me that he takes the role of the front man, the rich man dangling money over people playing games. But this video was actually the least of my critiques, the most upsetting of his content to me are the ones like his prison or solitary confinement videos. Also I have yet to meet a person that would not leave their lives behind to be with Sae-Byeok lol
This one was a banger ro. u are super talented in so many avenues and as someone who has followed you from your early tiktok days onto your youtube, i hope u know that u are inspiring to so many ppl. not tryna stroke ur ego too much but yeah hope u are in a good place mentally emotionally and financially
I hate the ending of mr beasts video. He really just said "well since the actual show never showed me precisely what squid games was, I will, instead of doing three seconds of research to figure it out, completely change the game despite it being the name of the series and video"
I've been to 4 jeopardy auditions in the last 15 years. The first one I went to was for the teen tournament. I was part of a small group that went to small, rural schools. There were kids from private art schools, one girl went to school with the Obama girls, one boy and his dad were speaking together in french, one girl said she would use her winnings to buy a bassoon because she'd been taking lessons at her school but wanted her own. My school could only offer the subjects they were legally required to offer, we were lucky to have a Spanish class. What chance did us rural kids have against the other kids who had every opportunity they could possibly ask for? And yet I was still lucky I had parents who had the time, money, and desire to drive me 500 miles one way to go to the audition. What chance did my classmates who were lucky if they had clean clothes to go to school in have compared to me?
no because i have been so conflicted on my feelings about this topic!! while there is no concrete answer, it has helped me to feel more comfortable about being conflicted knowing that not everyone is on opposite ends with their opinion. wonderful video as always!
I think the big difference you're trying to articulate for why Mr Beast's Squid Game interpretation sits better with you than it otherwise should is there's a wealth of difference between bad faith interpretations of Squid Game that are the articles and essentially a Squid Game parody on a game show. It's like making a kids toyset for Alien or Robocop back in the 80's! Films with really explicit themes of anti-capitalism toyified for a wider more general audience. There's possibly a certain scumminess there. A possibly perverse feeling that somebody might be toyifying a piece of media with serious themes, comodifying it in a way. But separating that from a purely capitalistic intention, there's an artistry in that parody and a clear reverence for the material. There's a difference between that and the pointed, political shittery of the articles you talked about! There's zero artistry in mindlessly simping for the status quo. It's all the scum of capitalism with none of the art produced under it. The closest thing I can think of is Mr Beast's Squid Game is like an extremely high detailed figurine from an anime or a high fashion catalog using designs inspired by the latest Final Fantasy. Undoubtedly capitalistic and made for mass market but there's a craftsmanlike quality to the object being made and the artistry is something to praise.
"Mr Beast's Squid Game is like an extremely high detailed figurine from an anime or a high fashion catalog using designs inspired by the latest Final Fantasy. Undoubtedly capitalistic and made for mass market but there's a craftsmanlike quality to the object being made and the artistry is something to praise." Meanwhile the articles claiming squid game is anti-communist is like finding a knockoff robocop action figure in a dollar store
Your existential monologue in the end of the video is always great. A genuine back and forth conversation between yourself, asking and answering the question at the same time. Feels transparent but human, by contradicting yourself and looking for more question and answer as you sink even deeper, getting lost inside a thought. i like it.
the mr beast stuff makes me uncomfortable because he’s like a Good dictator. he’s a benevolent ruler except i don’t want a good ruler, i don’t want a ruler at all. things should be distributed equally not given out by someone we consider to be Good
He built his channel/brand up from nothing and has given back and aided many many people. Provided money, food, homes, etc., to those in need. I think people like to look over this to immediately deem him a rich asshole. Jeff bezos fits your description. Mr beast gets money from companies to make videos, he doesn’t put it all in his pocket. He’s very selfless and I don’t get why people target him out of all people? I don’t watch his videos I think they are cringe but holy shit you got people like Logan and Jake Paul making hundreds and millions from a boxing match, why not direct your disdain towards them? They don’t provide any aid or support to people in need
I do not agree with your take, as I think he has worked to get to where he is at. Giving everyone the same things, regarless of effort will only make a lazy society.
I don’t agree with that last part. A lot of people need incentives in order to be productive. If there is nothing to work for, what’s the point of working?
@@nerasomnia Money is not the only incentive to work. In fact, when people are offered more money tl do a task, they do worse at it than the inverse. In a world where we have our basic needs met, we could pursue the work that actually makes us happy, because then we don't have to worry about money if that dream career happens to make little.
Ro, I want you to know I’ve quoted something you said in one of your videos (the Zelda one i believe) to multiple people, including my therapist. The gist was something like this: “I’m always watching things because if I leave my brain alone things get bad” and oh my god if that hasn’t been me, especially this last year. So thanks for the rad videos, and for putting words to something I hadn’t found a way to express yet.
Ok that “are you wearing stainless steel?” Made me genuinely consider my existence in a deeper way… mainly because, yes, I am wearing a stainless steel ring, and HOW DID YOU KNOW
I've been watching mr. Beast since he was around like 25k subs. He used to do a series called "worst intros" where he would make fun of youtube intros usually made by people under the age of 12. I feel weird about everything that has happened with him. Nobody knew him when I started watching and now he's almost a household name.
I found you awhile ago from one of Nick Green's channels and I'm so glad I did. Your humor, your views, your (very well done) content is much appreciated. You put a lot of work into your videos and it shows. Looking forward to the next video 💚
i love when you upload a video because i can't finish your videos in one sitting because they're just so incredibly dense. so i get to watch your videos in like 4 separate sittings and each one is equally entertaining and like its own little video :) not to mention i can't usually watch youtube videos on normal speed, some i even watch on 2x, but your videos are just so packed with content i have to stop throughout to give myself time to process it (in the best way possible)
I absolutely love the section where you strongly and emotionally express every problem you have with the video but also state the contradictions that you come to realize when you try to process why you have those problems. It's beautiful in a way that's hard to explain and every point for and against yourself are all very valid. At the end of the day, it's all a shade of grey with no real answer.
Maybe I'm being unfair to the person, but I seriously don't like Mr Beast. His content just strikes me as flexing but with extra steps, he only seems to be getting richer, and I seriously can't support him when his wealth directly makes him a part of the capitalist problem. You can point to his philanthropy and charities all you want, Bill Gates and McDonald's do charities and philanthropy and they're still greedy billionaire people/companies that are only working to perpetuate the gap between the classes. Smokey Edit: Wanted to come back to this comment to add something. It's not that philanthropy and charity work are inherently bad, it's just that they're not enough most of the time. Sure they can help, but in the long term, these things in themselves do little to nothing to actually solve any problems. I'm not trying to discount the idea that Mr Beast does more than the average philanthropic billionaire, but the fact that it's just not enough to actually solve any issues just seems more like a move to save face than to actually put any effort into solving these issues.
I feel like there is a lot more criticism that can be levied towards Mr Beast as his charity is often used as a tool to avoid criticism over his obvious love of ultracapitalism and many people who worked with him have come out saying that they have been mistreated and disrespected by the guy when the cameras are off. To me, one the biggest proof that his intentions are not entirely selfless is the fact that he constantly simps over Elon Musk to the point where he has said multiple time that he wants to be like him. Charity is a tool that most capitalist overlord have used and keep using to control their public image while continuing to maintain control over what kind of changes they personally want to see, essentially opting to be the arbiters of social change and social control. His Team Sea charity is a good example of that as half of the donations go towards a project that has been criticised for ultimate uselessness at cleaning up ocean as well as being extremely polluting itself. The videos where he helps financially people in his community have a small fraction of the budget that he will put just buying shit like fireworks and his comments over the poor living conditions of winners of the money are often just pointing out how happy he is that the people winning were in terrrible conditions, not understanding even that a large number of people watching his content likely live in worse conditions than those he shows on camera. He has always felt deeply off to me, because his actions and words always seems calculated to me to make him richer. In order to choose susbcribers for the Squid Game video he did, he asked them to buy his merch where they would be entered into lottery to win their spot, which meant that he would make record profit, with a large part of the people who really needed the money would buy merch they could not afford in the hopes of getting some money in return. He funds a lot of his charity in the same way, tying them to his different money-making schemes. We shouldn't forget that this guy is a millionaire already and he could stop making any cent from now on and live the most lavish life he could want, but his drive is clear; he wants to be at the centre of attention and be at the top of the class food chain.
Also giving away money as charity has a lot of tax benefits which were implemented to 'incentivise' the practice, but it ends up just being a big scam to end up with more money in your pockets by the end of the year!
It was debunked and the person didn't have anything to back it up other than his words against everyone else's when asked for proof. You mentioned "many people who worked with him have come out saying that they have been mistreated and disrespected by the guy when the cameras are off." Care to give proof of those allegations? You're complaining about a rich person doing good with their money, but I can't see a person with your mentality realizing that they wouldn't be as angry if Mr Beast was like almost every rich person and focused all their funds on themselves or to snowball more wealth, since that's the norm and I don't see you complaining about thousands upon thousands of people who do just that. There are people who hail Elon Musk as a perfect example of what to strive for, which is false since no one is, nor can be, a perfect person. Then there's people who complain about something because it's "popular", "mainstream" or "well liked". Elon Musk and his companies are constantly furthering humanity in several fields, like the physical batteries in teslas being a part of the vehicle's hull, saving space, weight and improving battery capacity and overall vehicle safety. And we don't need to think too much about *completely reusable rockets to space* and how big of a fucking thing that is for humanity in terms of resources spent long term. The list is long on top of those, and that's great. It's great that Elon Musk and the companies he is a part of are striving for better, which helps humanity as a whole. But you still complain and see something wrong with their wealth, even when Mr Beast is one of, if not the most generous person with his wealth and revenue stream. You're seeing evil where there is none. Poor people wasting money they needed for a chance at squid game? How is that a point against him, if that was the case? That's horrible planning for those people and he isn't responsible for that in the slightest. Too many people do the same by buying 1 or more lottery tickets *every time*, even when they really need the money. yes, he could stop doing what he loves, and be more than fine for the rest of his life, but he WANTS to help people and give back. It's not some act, he gave every contestant in his squid game money, on top of the prizes and when people chose to leave mid-way for 4000$. It was sponsored on top of everything else, and he spent 3.4 million dollars to create it. Are you a supporter of communism? "These evil rich people want to help people, it must be a trick!" "Oh the rich people are helping people and doing charities? WHY AREN'T THEY DOING MORE?" When would it be enough for you? When they push everything they gain back to less fortunate and charities? Why would they be required to do that? When have YOU last donated to a charity or similar?
@@sudenluola2241 you went all the way from "Rich people who do good for money are actually just good not just for money" to "Elon Musk is good actually and the destruction he causes is ok if he can do some slight good" to "Are you a communist bro? Why are you communisting when rich people just want to donate in peace. When have YOU last donated you commie" Lollllll literally funniest way to both agree with the original comment while presenting it as a disagreement. Because the entire premise of your reply is that rich people are actually good when they are exploiting the poor for money because at least they give some of it back, even though they always keep more. When will it be enough for us?? When this system doesn't exist. When Elon and Beast and the rest aren't being dick-stroked in UA-cam comment sections over doing less than the bare minimum. Rich people are not to be trusted because no system of acquiring wealth under capitalism is to be trusted, so people like Beast who try and present as trust worthy while being ultra capitalists are liars. Just that, liars with very good branding. All this "Rich people will actually save us if we just let them keep fucking the poor and the environment because they'll do giveaways" is the historically the worst possible means of liberating the masses. The worst. The biggest question is why, after literal centuries of wealth inequality and oppression by the wealthy, is your hottest take that rich people are trustworthy actually? At what point was that ever proven true? Literally in his first ever giveaway video of Mr Beast, when he was talking to Veritasium or someone about it, was him asking a sponsor for 10k to give a homeless man instead if 5k. Why? In his own words because it was more clickable. Even then he chose a higher amount not for the homeless man, but because he knew 10k was a bigger amount for people to care about on UA-cam. He said this himself with his mouth, so I don't know how you can argue that doing good is his primary objective when it literally never was even from the start.
@@sudenluola2241 Bruh, it's very cringe to read your response especially on a channel like Ro's- I'm not going to respond to this whole speech because it wasn't meant for you as you clearly still believe in the propaganda that the American Capitalist system feeds us. The only point that I will reiterate is that Musk and every ultra-rich person on the planet is actively taking away everyone's democratic rights through their wealth. Like I said, through charity and a lot more direct form of payment they get to decide what they think is best while no one can actually do anything against, which you should probably concerned if you believe in democracy. If you don't I would suggest looking deep inside of yourself and maybe watching someone like Hasan Piker as they would be a lot more useful to unlearning the bs you just shared. (Also I don't really care if the person didn't have proof per say since it barely matters in the grand scheme of my problem with Mr Beast) Cheers!
i only just found your channel (somehow????) and it's been so long since a UA-cam has scratched that itch in my brain, i am going to fall parasocially in like with you if you don't stop being so funny and witty and smart
You continue to astound me with how deeply you dive into these subjects. I can only hope to be half as quick witted as you on any given day. The way you speak is incredible. I just appreciate your work and it really gives me something to not only relax to, but also feel as if someone I there gets the way my mind works. I'm also constantly anxious and I have adhd and depression. It's a combination that really makes me feel hindered a lot of the time. I don't feel so alone in that when you speak on what you go through. Thank you for that.
this made me tear up, i related a lot to your thought process about this, thank you for speaking about this from so many different angles. wishing people didn’t need to be saved in the first place, yeesh. that one got me in the heart, ro.
the effort that went into this is insane, thank you!! what an experience and I love the end monologue of you explaining your thoughts while its filmed like a movie, you're so talented fr!
I remember thinking about these things when all this was going down. But my thoughts just weren’t coherent, and eventually I’d just get distracted by something and lose my train of thought completely anyways, so it’s hard to write things down or follow a long thread without losing it over and over again in the process. You have put my thoughts into words. You developed them. You remind me that maybe I’m not as incapable as I’m tempted to believe. Thank you.
This is the most thought-provoking video I have ever seen on youtube, one that breaks down the class war and the problems with philanthropy under capitalism, and its about a Mr. Beast video.
ro you expressed almost my exact conflicted opinion on this man. i was hesitant to watch this, expecting tons of (some justified) criticism, but its so nice to see we’ve reached this same place of: what mr beast does isn’t bad, it’s bad that we need him to do it. rich white men need no ego stroking, but, i dont know, im impressed by this 23 year old’s ability to do good and continue doing good.
The way you take my cluttered headspace and put it into a coherent and sincere format that I can share, instead of having to fight autism and bipolar disorder and anxiety to put together a sentence that doesn't sound like a Wikipedia article word salad, has been soooo refreshing and helpful. I've been in a delicate headspace where it's difficult to watch content that makes me think about things like this without doom spiraling. I know where I see a new upload from you, it's safe to watch, because you acknowledge and remind us that there's so much grey area, and it's okay to not know how to feel or to hold conflicting thoughts. I know it sounds dramatic, but thank you for providing content I can stomach, and comfort while my family and friends and coworkers work to keep me from going back to the psych ward for yet another holiday season, and while I anxiously wait to find out if I have hashimotos disease.
I really really really enjoyed this video, especially towards the end where you explained your feelings regarding this topic. You always seem to have a good, honest, and sympathetic way of talking.
I loved this vid! There's not always a super concrete answer for everything, and I appreciate you highlighting that. There's a ton of insight here and it's helped me begin to think about this in a better way. Also, for the sake of your fanart corner, I need to know if you have a fursona. If you do not, one will be made for you.

genuinely so confused about this guy bc i've never once seen him pop up in my recommended vids but like everyone refers to him as inescapable anyway here to boost your algorithm love u ro
Ro's editing/script writing style is staight up addicting. I keep scrolling down on the video tab of her channel checking for the 27th time that there isn't a video I missed.
The ending was such a honest and compassionate look on things. You have such a way with words, Ro. This video was eye opening and beautiful. Thank you.
I completely agree with your closing statements. It's nice of him, but it's not nice that there's even a necessity for it in the first place. It's not like he does HARM, but it's disquieting. I think he's a nice person, but he strikes me as just Oblivious. the Team Trees thing basically did nothing to offset deforestation or carbon emissions, and the Team Seas thing is affiliated with a shady org that supports trawling the sea floor despite being devastating to the ocean's ecosystem and is even illegal in several countries. and Team Seas' own website FAQ addresses how cleanup really wouldn't do much to improve the ocean because of how much more waste is produced than their cleanup goal is. But I can't be mad at a guy for trying to save the planet and picking up trash and planting trees and giving away money. Kind, harmless, nice guy. but oblivious. and I guess I kinda worry that it'll eventually lead to some sort of horrible mistake if he's not careful about his future philanthropic endeavors.
you're an INCREDIBLE creator. i feel like i learn so much from every video even when i clicked for pure entertainment. you're insanely intelligent thank u so much for sharing your thoughts with me ro.
Went through the same steps when thinking about private individuals who are just fortunate enough to give back to the comunity. They shouldn't have to. I'm happy for them, glad they care, but there's supposedly bigger, stronger systems that would rather them do all the work.
this video is absolutely phenomenal. The cinematography is stunning and it records thoughts that are rarely discussed in media, that personally i thought only i had these thoughts and it was driving me crazy. Well done, this is my first viewing channel and defi subscribing.
You are so incredibly talented. For whatever reason you do what you do, you positively add to the culture of our species for this day and age. We are desperately in need of more skilled time capsule makers like you.
You make a lot of good points here, and I definitely relate to how thoughts like these kinda ping pong around the brain like this, really liked the video gave me a lot to think about, the intro was cool :D
There were like 12 people that came forward about his off-camera personality and I'm pretty sure the original accuser just got harassed into apologizing. I mean, it doesn't really pertain to the squid game stuff anyways, but there's a good reason it wasn't mentioned at all.
It just feels so strange to have this legitimately nice person who still has kept their brand in check and hasn’t been revealed to be a puppy kicker or something
I remember watching mr. beast's content a few years back and just wishing i could end up on something like that, wishing I could have the chance to get me and my family out of poverty its kinda sad to be honest
I'm sorry the dog with the leash bit was so fucking gorgeous- how dare you call me out in my bad moments like that. I was really surprised by the turns this video took but so so excited to see the new topic- I actually am really interested in these show's history and their fall out of fashion. I don't comment too often but I wanna say your videos are some of the best I've seen in years- stylistically and especially in their writing. so this thought has pretty much nothing to do with the actual point of the video, but as you were talking about game shows, I couldn't help but think about Survivor.
I tried replying with a well-thought-out comment several times, but it keeps being deleted… shrug
I highly recommend Intelexual Media’s video called “A Short History on American Celebrity”
My argument is that they would do it for fame, if not the $ (and that video is my source for that argument)
don’t give them ideas about taking out the money-
The people that go on survivor are also not poor people, these are people wealthy enough to take a couple months off work and still have a place to live and a job when they get back, reality show contestants are a different breed

I didn’t understand the context, but he’s certainly more sympathetic knowing he can’t get a job because he stood up for his rights.

Hey, I know your channel.
Like a ”where did we go wrong?” type of feeling, you know?
we thought squid game was a social commentary on capitalism but the true social commentary was the existence of mr beast all along
Kavernacle has a few good videos on why I don't care for Mr. Beast and his content.
one of the most interesting game shows i've ever seen was called, like, Total Forgiveness or something from Collegehumor, where two queer comedians basically made up the rules to their own game show and got their boss to fund it to pay off part of their student debt. and even with all those safeguards in place - they LITERALLY made the rules themselves - it still was so stressful and genuinely hurtful that it almost ruined their friendship.
like, it started out as a dark comedy kind of "ha ha ain't it funny that this is the only way we can pay off our debt" thing, but it very quickly became "when my friend suffers, i prosper, and even though we both agreed, i feel fucking AWFUL." imo, it's 1000% more relevant to the themes of squid game than the mr beast vid. (and the ending was uplifting as fuck and made me cry.)
Yes Ally and Grant!! The fact that they literally had to choose their friendship over money at the end to save their relationship... also I have a crush on Ally loll their work is really good
I legit cried at the end of Total Forgiveness. I love Ally and Grant and their friendship
I'm still watching it, but I think it's pretty telling that the first episode ended with Ally recovering from an emotionally draining conversation with their ex and Grant being covered in blood.

"You get shot in the head and then you take an uber home" made me choke, thank you Ro
thank you for putting it into words. there’s something dystopian and disturbing about a world in which something like a game show is legitimately one of the only ways someone can break out of the machine of capitalism. it sucks that someone’s future can be dictated by someone with more money and power like that, even if those people are genuinely doing something amazing and kind. it’s like when you hear those stories of like an elementary schooler raising money for their friends or family to eat or pay a medical bill through a lemonade stand and it gets turned into an inspirational story when in reality there’s something deeply wrong with a world in which a child has to work like that for basic human needs. it’s i think generally good when someone like mr beast can give someone a chance like that but the fact that we live in a world where he has that power to change someone’s life in a way they can never hope to accomplish on their own i think really shows how deep in the gears of capitalism people are.

There is no one like you. I love your narrative voice. I laugh, I cry, you make me feel things. Thank you for choosing to create.
no because i have been so conflicted on my feelings about this topic!! while there is no concrete answer, it has helped me to feel more comfortable about being conflicted knowing that not everyone is on opposite ends with their opinion. wonderful video as always!
Undoubtedly capitalistic and made for mass market but there's a craftsmanlike quality to the object being made and the artistry is something to praise."
Meanwhile the articles claiming squid game is anti-communist is like finding a knockoff robocop action figure in a dollar store
This genuinely made me teary eyed, I feel like you create the perfect blend between describing something and making something if that makes sense.
Your existential monologue in the end of the video is always great. A genuine back and forth conversation between yourself, asking and answering the question at the same time. Feels transparent but human, by contradicting yourself and looking for more question and answer as you sink even deeper, getting lost inside a thought. i like it.
the mr beast stuff makes me uncomfortable because he’s like a Good dictator. he’s a benevolent ruler except i don’t want a good ruler, i don’t want a ruler at all. things should be distributed equally not given out by someone we consider to be Good
but i like your point about finding peace in uncertainty. i’m certainly 😉 trying to practice that more
He built his channel/brand up from nothing and has given back and aided many many people.

AHH THANK YOU FOR POSTING MY ART RO
thank u for making it!
This is the closest to me watching Mr.Beast, thanks Ro
Also giving away money as charity has a lot of tax benefits which were implemented to 'incentivise' the practice, but it ends up just being a big scam to end up with more money in your pockets by the end of the year!
plus he always talks about saving the environment yet he's into nfts and owns a fast food chain...
When have YOU last donated you commie"
Lollllll literally funniest way to both agree with the original comment while presenting it as a disagreement.
@@sudenluola2241 Bruh, it's very cringe to read your response especially on a channel like Ro's-
I'm not going to respond to this whole speech because it wasn't meant for you as you clearly still believe in the propaganda that the American Capitalist system feeds us.
“parasocially in like” LOVE THAT 😭
You continue to astound me with how deeply you dive into these subjects.
I’m only 2 minutes into the vid and the concept of ding dong ditching wolf blitzer is already the funniest thing I’ve heard all week
Thank you.
my favorite parts of your videos are 3/4s of the way through when you start your spoken word emo ted talks, luv you ro
I’m so glad I randomly found your channel, honestly quality content keep up the great work
One of the best vids so far rose
ty :,)
I really really really enjoyed this video, especially towards the end where you explained your feelings regarding this topic. You always seem to have a good, honest, and sympathetic way of talking.
I loved this vid! There's not always a super concrete answer for everything, and I appreciate you highlighting that. There's a ton of insight here and it's helped me begin to think about this in a better way.
Also, for the sake of your fanart corner, I need to know if you have a fursona. If you do not, one will be made for you.
"one will be made for you. This is a threat."

"Get in the fursuit, Ro!"
This is one of the best videos I've ever watched. And I just finished watching Dan Oslon's recap on the meme stock apes fiasco.
This is a beautiful, heartwrenching piece of art, Ro. Thank you for making it and sharing it with us.
i reaally really really love how hearthfelt your back half of videos feel
it just feels genuine in a way that like
almost makes me feel like crying at times

this was such a good video, amazing points, kept my interest as always. I love how you're able to balance comedy and seriousness, it's great to see the contrast!
I seriously love every one of your videos and I get irrationally excited with every upload, amazing work Ro!!
ro, you're incredible. you make me feel a lot less alone and scrambled in this world. great video
ALL HER VIDEOS ARE CINEMATIC AS HELL i lcoe her content so much
genuinely so confused about this guy bc i've never once seen him pop up in my recommended vids but like everyone refers to him as inescapable

Ro's editing/script writing style is staight up addicting. I keep scrolling down on the video tab of her channel checking for the 27th time that there isn't a video I missed.
The ending was such a honest and compassionate look on things. You have such a way with words, Ro. This video was eye opening and beautiful. Thank you.
"the closest thing we have to a benevolent Willy-Wanka in our reality"
Absolutely sent me
I completely agree with your closing statements.
Gimme your sources please
Goddamn, the short film at 35 is so good.
Your cinematography is incredible, I was stunned.
Just found this channel, you give me such a Chris Fleming vibe, I love it.
you're an INCREDIBLE creator. i feel like i learn so much from every video even when i clicked for pure entertainment. you're insanely intelligent thank u so much for sharing your thoughts with me ro.
Rewatching this 2 years on and I think this is my fav Ro Ramdin video- probably my fav video-essay.
I've always felt like Mr Beast was hiding some huge secret like I bet he eats children or something.
There were like 12 people that came forward about his off-camera personality and I'm pretty sure the original accuser just got harassed into apologizing. I mean, it doesn't really pertain to the squid game stuff anyways, but there's a good reason it wasn't mentioned at all.
U reaching gng. Like y people hate on a genuinely good person?
It just feels so strange to have this legitimately nice person who still has kept their brand in check and hasn’t been revealed to be a puppy kicker or something
The part from 35 mins needs cut and shared everywhere.
Thanks friend.
Ro both inspires and intimidates me. What’s new, when all my media consumption reflects back what I like, hate and don’t understand about myself?
Ro as someone who makes and edits videos I am blown away at the sheer volume & speed of jokes in your videos it’s like I’m overdosing
I remember watching mr. beast's content a few years back and just wishing i could end up on something like that, wishing I could have the chance to get me and my family out of poverty
its kinda sad to be honest
I'm sorry the dog with the leash bit was so fucking gorgeous- how dare you call me out in my bad moments like that. I was really surprised by the turns this video took but so so excited to see the new topic- I actually am really interested in these show's history and their fall out of fashion. I don't comment too often but I wanna say your videos are some of the best I've seen in years- stylistically and especially in their writing. You're the best stylistically cohesive bully I've ever laughed with and I hope you keep expanding on every interesting and obsessive thought you have cause they're wonderful :3
Once this gets views Mr. Beast will probably leave a comment on this complete dissection of him like "HAHA AWESOME 👍👈☑️" completely ignoring the contents of the video, like he normally does with his critiques.
What kind of critiques exist for his videos? Genuinely curious because I’ve heard a few things but never anything concrete.
@@helpgirlimhavingalifecrisis My personal issue with Mr. Beast is how he'll blow $600,000 on fireworks but only offer $450,000 for the squid game poverty shuffle -_-
(Edit: I am now realizing you may have been asking "What critique was I referring to?", If you look at Meatcanyon's animated parodies directly calling out Mr. Beast's crappy exploitative behavior you will find his official account tone deafly commenting on the animations. That was what inspired me to mention how he's done it before, and it isn't the only case)
@@EZOnTheEyes I feel as if you're choosing not to mention everything else he's done for the people, communities, and ect. Also, he shouldn't have to be giving money away 24'7 to people, he's allowed to be a person and have fun...
@@mossromantic913 When his definition of "fun" costs more than the average US citizen's home value in one sitting of a gun powdered fueled bender, it shows some glaring flaws in our economic system. And when he's willing to dish that much out on entertainment rather than community support, he doubles down on the issue. I mean Ro even said several times in this video he spent $2 million on the set but $450k on the prize pot.
Sure, billionaires can have fun, but it doesn't need to cost a small countries GDP whenever they want to do armchair philanthropy.
@@mossromantic913 What the hell are you talking about, why would you spend 600k on fucking fireworks?
This is the first video of yours I've found and I'm shocked you don't have more subscribers! Well written, detailed analysis, great intro/graphics and hilarious, absolutely 10/10
God, this conclusion was moving and stunning. I was in awe of the stream of consciousness you laid to words on paper, thanks for that
Your ending monologues always hurt me in my bones, thank you for writing them and shooting them so beautifully as well
