You make art using a gelli plate, many people who use gelli plates are crafters, AND I mean no disrespect to crafters!!! That's what sets you apart--you are an artist.
One of my goals is to prove that you can make serious high quality artwork with a gelli plate, just as you would with a metal etching plate or a lithography stone.(and have lots of fun in the process!)
This was a very interesting video. I enjoy your process because you are not ashamed to speak about mistakes and flubs during the creative process. I just want to hug you after each video! LOL 😅
Your artwork really stands out from all the other gelli print you tube videos. You have inspired me to keep trying to make better art. I love your hand made stencil idea!
Just what I was looking for .. I am a painter and wanted to approach the gelli plate from a more fine art perspective … wonderful mark making ! Thank you !
The placement lesson helped immensely! This is the part of designing that I need. I understand the printing but it always seems happenstance rather than planning how I want my painting to come out. Thank you for your kind, constructive instruction. I appreciate you and am consistently inspired to go print on my gelli plate. Last night I cut my own stencils from Mylar to go and create today!
I love the slow, deliberate, clear manner in which you work. I also love your aesthetic. I had no idea that I could use permanent markers on my gel plate--so it's safe?! Thanks for letting us see you learn from your mistakes--so reassuring to know I'm not alone in making the very same mistakes.
SMALL project? I don’t think so. That was just amazing. You must really create some jaw dropping art! Thank you for the instruction and also doing it pretty much in real time. Also not doing a voice over. I love to hear the sound of creation ❤
Great final image. BTW, I've used two 45 degree pieces of cardboard of heavy stock paper to surround your plate (like a mask) instead of cleaning with a rag so I don't get dirt/paint on my pressed paper along the edges.... Kinda like giant versions of crop tools used in photography.
I love your videos and your work. I was a serigrapher, am now mainly an enamelist which I incorporate into silver and gold jewelry that I fabricate.. Now I’m getting hooked on this process. I love it. Thank you!
Sir! You are the first person I've seen so far who has used pens and permanent markers on your plate. This is such a cool idea and one that is right up my alley!! My little 5x7 plate doesn't seem so intimidating anymore :D
I am so impressed by your prints. Your style of instruction is easy to follow and inspirational. Thanks for showing your work! I was so excited to try your sharpie technique. I thought I might note that the sharpie did transfer well just like in your video. However I did make the mistake of trying another marker, a Sanford Expo dry erase marker, that has made permanent stains on my Gel plate. I tried everything to get the marks out but no luck. Just thought I might save anyone else out there from making my same mistake. My plate still works fine.. just have to try to ignore the marks.
Hi Jan, I looked up the ingredients of expo markers and they contain alcohol as the propellant. You could try rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or hand sanitizer and baby wipes to get the stains out. If that doesn't work try baby oil and paper towels. The stains should come off and fade in time with repeated cleaning.
@@artwhisperer88 One of the tricks we used to get non-dry erase marker off white boards (someone always forgets to check) is to go over the area again as the marker is it's own solvent. I'm wondering if the same would work in this case taking the expo marker off the gel plate with more of the expo marker? It might be worth a small test?
I love your art so much! How inspiring, it’s bold and the simplified color choice makes it so pleasing. I also loved the way the ghosting showed up in the first pull; perfection. Bravo👻
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you creating this beautiful and gorgeous painting. I really really love ❤️ it and it’s going to look brilliant framed and on the wall too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
LOVE your work, it's beautiful. The process seems quite patient, I was wondering how your paint wasn't drying on the plate before you pulled it, especially on the black layer?
The acrylic paint has an open time of about 15 minutes, depending on the humidity of the room. Often times I speed up dry time with a desk fan. Thanks for watching!
Good morning, I'm new to Gelli plateting, and I think I made a error using a sharpy permanent black marker, because I can't seem to remove the marking of what I drew on the plate,do you have any advice on cleaning it off the Gelli plate.? Thankyou in advance. 😢
Your work is so vibrant and spontaneous ! I tried the marker on my homemade gelli plate, but would not pull off. Must you use a very light colored paint?
This surprises me as well! As long as you apply a thin layer on top to "activate" what's underneath, whatever is underneath even if dried will transfer to your paper. You can try it on a small scale with a smaller plate which is not too costly. I have to admit this large plate is quite expensive, about $150, but to me its worth it.
I find it unnecessary, unless i use a medium that could smear or bleed, like pastels or colored pencil. I used high gloss varnish once ua-cam.com/video/DJfqlnW4HNU/v-deo.html
Thanks! So I am a bit fascinated with how acrylic fuses to itself to enable you to Pull it off on one piece. I want to use natural pigments and will be experimenting with this without plastic or acrylic. Any thoughts?
Umm, no. You have to remember that many "natural" pigments are highly toxic, i.e. colors derived from metals like lead, chromium, etc. That is enough topic for a separate channel.
I hesitate to make my own gel plate because I am awful in a kitchen, I never follow recipes and make a big mess. I know that commercial gelli plates are expensive ( over $100!) and are a major investment, but it will pay for itself over time if you are serious about making gallery quality prints.
Hi again. great video. can you please tell me how to remove the posca markers from the plate after use? i tried soap and water, alcohol...nothing works. thank you!
omg. That worked. What a lifesaver you are. I don’t know what I would do without you and your tutorials and your timely responses. Thank you thank you thank you.
No, I don't think oil based/wax based markers will work for this purpose. "permanent" is really a relative term as the stains come right off with baby oil.
@artwhisperer88 I guess I meant sketching on paper, not directly on gel plate with grease pen and transferring onto gel plate for pulling print. What medium works for that purpose?
Isn’t a permanent marker water resistant? Didn’t know that you can use permanent marker on gelli plates was worried the lines don’t come off again after using … 😅
If I may ask is there a reason that my sharpie magnum is not printing fully black. It looks like tyre skid marks as opposed to a fully black line. Thank you in advance. I really appreciate your work.
@@deevaliciouspantheress2182 unfortunately the lifespan of a Sharpie on a gelli plate is short, I find that the new pens write dark black, but upon constant use the felt tip wears out and you end up with a purplish blue. I since have switched to black paint in a squirt bottle to make dark black lines.
Could you please tell me how you created the stone texture? I sometimes achieve this with the edge of the brayer. I wonder if it is permanently altering the plate. You achieve a very subtle and authentic grain.

Great Demo! What size is the Somerset paper?
Bravo! You give us a great demonstration of your art. I’m wondering what kind of thin tissu you use for the last collage. Thanks!!

I don’t quite get it: acrylics dry so quickly. How does your layer of acrylic paint adhere to the paper so well, with just a bit of hand pressure?

Hi, it doesn't cost you anything to watch! But I do appreciate donations to my Pay Pal to help production costs and art supplies.
if you use tyvek instead of copier paper, your stencils could be reuseable and free. I use priority mail (tyvek) envelopes.
I really prefer the thicker gauge of mylar. It holds up to cleaning and being knocked around. Please watch ua-cam.com/video/qUIHAwhjCSM/v-deo.html
How long do you leave the sharpie to dry before layering on paint? I am trying this for the first time.
Sharpies are alcohol based inks and dry almost immediately. It takes a bit of practice.
Do you have a video on making a large format gel plate?

rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab or hands sanitizer
Hi again. great video. can you please tell me how to remove the posca markers from the plate after use? i tried soap and water, alcohol...nothing works. thank you!

Nope, my phone is my filming device, and the acetate is a reference for future use. I'm strictly old school that way. 😎
Journal gel work is fine, but you have caused me to think deeper. More of an art than a crap shoot with color. thanks.

the texture is purely accidental. The texture is the leftover bits of black paint from a previous pull.
Let the paint sink into the paper a while
