Your explanations are so clear!! When you compare it to English, it makes me realize that I’ve been making learning Mandarin harder than it needs to be! Lol and I’m also grateful I was born speaking English because I don’t think I could learn it now😂😂😂
hahaha I'm glad you feel that way! But honestly I don't think English is too hard either. There's a reason why it became the "international language" 😉

Well, if you are complaining about conjugation in english language, I would highly recommend german language.
Also our slavic language has 6 grammatical cases of nouns, and only recently ditching locative case like in Latin language. :)
I'm Japanese, but one of the most difficult things in Chinese is pronunciation! On the other hand, we luckily have an advantage on learning vocabulary and 汉字. For instance, 安心(anshin) and 安心(an1xin1) are the same with the meaning and 汉字. For another example, 理想(risou) and 理想(li3xiang3) are different in pronunciation but still, the meaning and 汉字 are the same. But sometimes, I get confused with a false friend like "手纸 ", because "手纸" means a letter in Japanese. lol

And it's so cool that we have so much shared characters & words. When I was learning Japanese, I feel the great advantage to know Kanji too! 😉

Honestly the fear of messing up pronunciation.
I’m German and in German, while pronunciation of a word does matter, we rarely have cases where very similar sounding words mean very different things 😅 but your video made me a bit more confident in tones, even if that will probably take me a lot of time.
Also the “r” sound 😅
@@isa.7151 Don't worry too much! Just do you best and SPEAK UP! It'll build your confidence, and even if you make mistakes, it's just opportunities to learn! :)
I have been thinking over the past 4 years that I have been here in China that the language is so difficult but after your video my view of the language has changed a bit, and I can see what you mean about other languages having to deal with so many rules and genders and stuff, being myself a Spanish native never thought about these things.
The pronounciation! How to differentiate zh, c, q.
And, is it true when you say the consonant at the end of the word, it sounds like a little disappear? For example: xihuan is pronounced like xihua.

I agree. Only the sentence structure is making me crazy, but not because it's hard to understand but because it's different from western languages. But all in all its indeed a very logical and easy to learn langauge. Thank you for sharing your facts with us. 🧡

I'm not sure your first point is an advantage. The limited number of sounds in Mandarin, combined with the fact that the vast majority of Chinese words are only 1 or 2 syllables long, means that so many words sound alike. (Mandarin, infamously, has a lot of homophones!!!)
That's a fair point! But i still think it's an advantage in terms of mastering the pronunciation. As for words that sound alike, i don't know if it's easier to memorize words with same sound different meaning, or different sound for different meaning
@@linglongmandarin Thanks for the reply. For me (I can't speak for others) it is hard to memorise similar sounding words. The fact that Mandarin has a plethora of homophones is one of the 3 reasons why I'm put off trying to learn Mandarin again. (I tried once before, but failed badly!) The other reasons are difficult pronunciations and tones, and the characters.
Your explanations are so awesome ! You even can speak English fluently. For me, as Indonesian born Chinese it's very hard to recognize or use tones in Mandarin because we are influenced with local accents of Indonesian, such as Javanese, Sundanese, etc.
I know now. It shouldn't have been that hard to learn Mandarin.. Xie-xie, lao shi !

Yeah. I can understand it's hard to get rid of first language influence when learning a new language. But have faith that practice will make it better! Ask your Chinese friends to correct you whenever they can will help too! 😊

Great video, I do find sentence structure difficult. I often say, 中文语法很难。At hsk 3 there seems to be so many grammar rules, and don’t yet have a good system to remember them. (I know I need to study more btw), on characters, I totally understand what you say, but wow, I find I forget them quickly, it’s a constant daily review, and I have to make up strange weird stories about the characters to remember them… is that normal? Great video, highly watchable, interesting, also entertaining, your passion really comes through and despite what I wrote above, I agree with all your points 😂🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

and YES! I actually encourage my students to use their imagination when studying 汉字. eg. 坐 looks like two people sitting on the ground. It's funny and effective. So use whatever method works for you!

I really am enjoying learning Chinese. The pronouns are super easy which is a relief but of course the characters are taking a lot of tough memorization and I’m going very slowly. I’m trying to focus on making sure I remember the tones as part of the meaning of each word. I am currently learning about money and numbers, but I am having a tough time about when to use 二 VS 两 .
It's true. Characters can take a lot of time to process in the beginning, but you're doing a great job! And actually I wrote an E-book to teach people all about Chinese numbers, will release it later this month. I think it'll be very helpful for your learning!

It is easy to pronounce but every hard to remember the characters.
I wasn’t aware there’s no difference between formal and informal :o I always thought China was simply more relaxed with it than Korea and Japan lol. Because of honorifics like 哥哥 and 姐姐 I always assumed it was similar to these two languages so this is very interesting. But it is still common to address people older than you with respect, right? Does this happen between friends of a different age or in relationships, too?
If you want to address someone politely (older people, your superior, etc), you can use 您 nín instead of 你. But other than that, who you speak to doesn't really affect the speech rules :)

I need the logical explanation behind 前面（in front) 后面（behind) but when it comes to day 前天， 前 become days back while 后 means day after today (basically days in front)
前 means before, and 后 means after.
前天 - the day before
后天 - the day after
It shows that in the chinese conception, the past is in front of you, and the future is behind you. Which makes sense because you can see the past, but you can’t see the future.

You still to memorize 40,000 characters to read anything.
Not ture... with 800 characters you can read about 85% of the texts. Even the upper intermediate level (HSK4) requires only 1200 words.
You don't need to know every word in the dictionary to be able to read English. Do you?
Spanish is more dificult. Soy Argentina hablo español. 西班牙语比汉语很多困难。🧉
