I chose a side which makes sense in my opinion. 🇨🇳勉强 effort+force (forcing someone to make an effort to gain knowledge→🇯🇵勉強) 🇨🇳大丈夫 great+length+male (🇯🇵大丈夫 had been used to refer to Bodhisattva because of its diginity and power. and it gained the meaning of strong or firm, and become current meaning, Okay) 🇯🇵手紙 hand+paper (🇨🇳 In Chinese language, going to the toilet is expressed as 解手, and the paper(紙) when we use 解"手", call it 手紙) 🇯🇵先生 ahead+living (🇨🇳 In Chinese, it was, apparently, used to refer to teacher, philosopher like confucius, because such people were born earlier, and had a lot of knowledge and experience. However, from a different perspective, such people can be regarded as great, so it got a meaning of Mr.)

Well, good luck with that. My ancestors changed their surname from Boehm / Bohm with the umlaut, to Bame, in the 1830s, because in this country nobody could pronounce an O with an umlaut. What would have sounded much like your ee-uu (Bohm) now sounds like aaaaaaayyyyyy (Bame).
