His first album (1960) launched his fame. I will say that he stood on the shoulders of a giant, though... the legendary Shelley Berman. But he stood well on his own as well.
I've been a big Newhart fan for decades. Wrote to him a couple years ago and he took the time to respond. I really appreciated that. Bob will be missed.
I remember watching the closing scene of the finale of “Newhart” and my parents having to explain the joke. “The Bob Newhart Show” ended the month before I was born, but I came to love Bob for his later work.
I have many happy memories of watching Saturday night tv with my family. Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart , Carol Burnett. Thanks for all of the laughs, Mr. Newhart ❤
That was my Saturday night as well. 2 solid hours of excellence. I didn’t care for the song and dance parts of Carol Burnett, but I always knew a comedy bit was next, so I always watched.
"The Bob Newhart Show" was one of my dad's favorite sitcoms during the 1970s. And he was a fan of Bob's standup comedy in the 1960s; he would recount to me some of Bob's signature routines (the one-sided phone call, the bus driver). I saw Bob in person once, in 1990 (and I remember watching this 1990 interview when it first aired), when he visited the UCLA campus library where I was working at the time as an undergrad. Thank you, Bob, for the memories!
Bob Newhart was a genius and one of my favourite comedy performers of all time. He will be greatly missed but we will always have those wonderful routines to enjoy.
Well said and agree, we've lost so many from that era...very sad that I can think of more who've left us than those still with us...Rich Little, Bill Cosby, John Byner, and Carol Burnett are the only ones who come to mind that are still around.
I remember Bob so well from when I was a kid. He really was funny but unique at the same time. Never yelled. Was never rude or disrespectful to others. Pure situational comedy and so much of it came from him. He may have had writers on the side, but many of the ideas were original. RIP Bob.
I hope when I die at 88+ people say "gone too soon". One of the few stars who was truly universally loved. Thanks for the many laughs Bob. And thank goodness for the video and audio recordings.
Bob was one of the first times I learned that comedy had albums. My grandpa would play his stuff on his record player and it taught me to sit and appreciate good comedy. Rip bob
Bob Newhart wasn't just a comedian; he was a beacon of joy and wit in our lives. His humor transcended generations, bringing families together around the TV. Every laugh, every smile, was a gift from him to us. RIP to a legend who showed us that clean, clever comedy could touch hearts and change lives. We'll never see another like him. 💔 😞
He kept us laughing for six decades, and he always kept it clean. His occasional observations on Facebook were always insightful and on topic. Thanks for the memories, sir.
I'm 36 and watched Bob's shows in reruns on Nick at Nite in the '90s. I was very young so most of the jokes went over my head, but I LOVED his acerbic delivery. I'll definitely be revisiting those shows now.
Oh man. Woke up to this news on the radio and came straight here. Thank you, Late NIght team for this great memory, and thank you, Mr. Newhart, for everything.
Loved both of his comedy series. I took my mother to see him in-person when he appeared in Phoenix around 2004. I had the honor of meeting him after the show. One year, I drew him on my Christmas card.
Growing up my dad had a great collection of comedy albums and Button Down Mind was my favorite. Mel Brooks and Bob Newhart were my dad’s favorites and they became mine.
Bob Newhart isn't much known in the UK but I have fond memories in the 80s at school break over summer watching his show, 'Newhart' on the telly here in the afternoons - gentle yet funny, very enjoyable. He didn't need to win over a lot of comedy fans from the rest of the world but he did have them including me. Rest well in peace and thank you, Bob.
I didn't know Bob Newhart was still alive, and am sad to hear he is dead. I hope he died peacefully and without pain. I love that guy. Newhart continues to be a great show.
Thanks to Bob Newhart for all the laughs over the years. My favourite was the 'Newhart' show from the 80s...I own dvds of the series and watch them regularly! RIP Bob Newhart.
Loved Bob Newhart. His sitcoms were hilarious and his dead pan jokes were priceless. His character Professor Proton on Big Bang Theory was perfect. RIP Bob😢
Hi, i’m Larry, and this is my Brother Daryl, and my other brother Daryl 😂 As an 80’s kid, i always appreciated the comic style of Bob Newhart…the longer we live, the more 80’s greats we lose each year 🥲 Rest in peace Bob 🙏🏼
That old "Bob Newhart Show" from the 1970s is easily one of my favorite Top 5 TV shows of all time. Comedy is one of those things that doesn't always age well, but that show, at least for me, really holds up well. I can catch a rerun every now and then, and I'll still be laughing hard. 😄
I got to see Bob do a standup act in Vegas and he was so damn funny. He was such a smart comic. He was also such a nice man. My dad has connections and we got to meet him and he couldn't have been nicer. He was one of my dad's favorite comedians and was one of mine too. RIP Bob. I hope you make my laugh again one day.
I saw him in early 70s in Tahoe with Diane Cannon opening. Then about mid 2000s. He did exactly the same routine and was even more funny. I am currently on Season 6 of the Bob Newhart Show with Larry, and brother Darryl and his other brother Darryl. Fascinating how popular the became on the show. Will miss you Professor Proton. 🙏💪🌎🌍🌏❤️🇺🇸🖖
Thanks for sharing. Two of my favorites. You can tell Dave is really enjoying this. I already miss the thought of Bob popping up in a cameo or seeing a new interview once in a while. I know they were getting less frequent, but they were gems because he was such a treasure. He was the best Papa Elf there ever was. I'm sure Buddy would agree.
A Total and Complete Comedy and Television Legend. RIP Bob Newhart.
His first album (1960) launched his fame. I will say that he stood on the shoulders of a giant, though... the legendary Shelley Berman.
But he stood well on his own as well.
Truly. "Legend" is used far, FAR too much nowadays, but this dude absolutely fits the bill. God bless that man.
Boring bon the slob had fucken purple pit stains
Was waiting to see which interview you would pick. Excellent choice. He will be missed. What a legend.
Yes
Absolute legend!
So sad Mr. Newhart has passed but so thankful we had him in our lifetime ❤
Never vulgar, always honest, always funny, a unique and exceptional entertainer.

I've been a big Newhart fan for decades. Wrote to him a couple years ago and he took the time to respond. I really appreciated that. Bob will be missed.
My heart hurts. What a legendary comic. RIP sir.
We're so fortunate to have had the great Bob Newhart in our lives. RIP, Bob.
We were so fortunate to have a great man and a great comedian like Bob Newhart contribute to our culture.
Thank you for the memories Bob. Very few like you in the history of American television. Classy. Funny. Honest. Rest In Peace.
I remember watching the closing scene of the finale of “Newhart” and my parents having to explain the joke. “The Bob Newhart Show” ended the month before I was born, but I came to love Bob for his later work.
The joke also went over my head when I was a kid. But found it hilarious and brilliant in the years following. Great moment in tv

Those were the days...

Bob Newhart was a comic genius. There will never be another like him. This is so sad. Thanks for the many laughs, Bob!
He had a long and good life, and we got good comedy for a long time. Thanks Bob! Onward!

What a Legend Bob was
Oh, God, I loved him so much.
Add one more to the roster of complete originals that are no longer with us. Thanks for everything Bob. It's been a privilege to watch you work.

Does anyone else recall Bob’s guest appearance as a therapist on MAD TV opposite Mo Collins as the client? “STOP IT!” 😂
I just had a look for "Stop It - Bob Newhart" here on UA-cam and it's been uploaded
Well worth a watch, whether or not you’ve ever seen it before.
