Paul knew from the start that this was never going to work out.
Everyone did
@@mackstewart4203 Everyone except Conan, unfortunately. Why he thought *NBC* would treat him any better than they had Dave or Jay is a mystery for the ages.
My favorite part... Dave calling Jay "Big Jaw"...
The whole Jay Conan thing was just gift to Dave.
The best thing to come out of the Conan vs Leno Tonight Show fiasco was how much it energized Letterman, Conan and Kimmel. They brought their A-games throughout.
Remember, kids: Don't. Blame. Conan. Please. :)
PAUL: Well....don't blame him.
You're saying this is vintage Jay.
Conan green lit *NBC's* weird 5 year plan that set that entire debacle in motion, so we can partially blame him.
@@gallery7596 Whatever you do: Don't blame Conan. ;)
Sorry, but I think we actually can.
What a time to be alive! Classic moment in time. Thanks for letting me relive it.
When Letterman says “I’m really enjoying it” he loses 20 years off his face.
This era of late night TV never gets old. Don't blame Conan.
Being of a younger age, I never watched as much as I did during these years, This saga was wild, and Dave's coverage was great.
Dave´s impression of Leno is hilarious.
I love rewatching these! 😂
You can see why Letterman likes Norm MacDonald. Very similar sense of humor.

Just search "Leno vs Conan" and open up the first 5 videos that come up on UA-cam. I will bet my salary that you'll find @Gallery's anti-Conan comments under ALL of those videos. Two smart guys that played the dumb guy so well.
Out of all of these talk show hosts, Dave and Conan are the two I have watched religiously and marathon their previous shows. Their shows are timeless, innovative and hilarious.
This is just absolutely gold!! Thanks for putting it all together!! Oh the laughs!! 😂😂
Im just here for Dave’s impression of Jay
Conan’s last week as Tonight Show host was some of the greatest television ever.
Man, THIS was The golden age of television for me lol 😂….i couldn’t WAIT to watch letterman each night when all this drama unfolded. 😅
9:53, this is why i love this man
I remember this like it was yesterday 😂
15:40--the reason why to this day I refer to Jimmy Fallon as Lonnie Donegan.
Lonnie Donegan was the biggest victim of all of this.
Nope he was the only victor actually.
Don't blame Lonnie.
"Greatest period of American television."
Just keep living my best life by not blaming Conan.
Dave is my all time favorite, the most organic and fun. Much blessings.
Spot on compilation thread, all i remembered was "Don't blame Conan" 😂, always wondered what I missed. Leno's a putz.
The golden age of television.
"It's the Tonight Show with Lonny Donnegan!"
Johnny is spinning in his grave over what became of that show.
Oh man, awesome compilation of 'Leno v O'Brien', thanks! Watch this first then go watch Dave with Conan as guest after he got the boot by Leno (5/17/12).
Joan rivers always said Jay Leno jokes were perfect for sleepy people and people trying to fall asleep
@@gallery7596 Wow even Joan Rivers hated Leno? I didnt even know that lol. Honestly the list of people who DONT hate Leno is so much more manageable than the long long list of people who DO.
Probably in part why he never had Joan on the show.

“Hey there, Mavis! Bring me some Quaker State!”
I never understood why Dave thought it was okay to use Mavis Leno's name to mock her husband. What had she done to deserve that?
Never gets old :)
Lonnie Donegan😂😂😂
I always felt that Dave was Conan's mentor like Johnny was to Dave
"In the television industry there are two types of talk show hosts: Jay Leno and those who have been victimized by Jay Leno"
Classic bit.
This really was the golden age of television.
The fundamental flaw with this succession plan was that it was a guy in his early 40s waiting for a guy in his early 50s to retire.
Yes, and Johnny went to 65, so how could Jay (still consistently #1) not be disappointed that he's being retired while still in his 50's. Just a terrible plan from the start.
Except Jay's demo couldn't stay up late and Conan was the star the younger people wanted to see.
@@evekurocieru But they also found that during his time as host, the 34-49 year old demo was tuning out after the half way point in Conan's "Tonight Show." They had to get up for work for the next day, and viewers just didn't seem as interested in staying up until 12:35am the way they once did.
It wasn't a good sign to *NBC.*

I discovered Conan in the summer of 2010 or 2011 when it was Conan’s first season at tbs and I was bid ridden the whole summer with a bad concussion and he got me through it and ever since then I’ve watched every night and well now his podcast
Conan is a national treasure
The one time when Dave sarcastically said "I don't have a dog in this fight." I laughed so much.

Why in a few months, big bird? Finally got a girlfriend? 👩❤💋👨
Dave really was having the time of his life during this and it was great to see
Great edit, Don. Thanks.
Gosh I miss the bearded one! I hear he's in Montana or Wyoming or some such place...Leno comes over to fix his snowmobile and rehitch his snowplow to his Dodge Power wagon. What a guy!!
I thought it was a steam tractor…
He always makes sure to bring a photographer.
gotta love The Donz. excellent cut and kudos to the team
Oh, what a classic
'You don't wait around'... Is the nail in Leno's guilt coffin
9:01 this killed me ☠️
Ice-T as Carson Daly caught me so off guard, I cackled at 3 AM
I used to stay up and watch his show nightly. In Australia it was on around 11 or 12 so I'd have to try and keep the laughter down so I didn't wake anyone. Late Night died when Letterman and Conan left. Such a shame.
Letterman will always be No1
That’s right Dave’s number 1..
(Second to but also tied with Conan)
Because it's FUN!!
And that smile is so pure...
Now it's commonplace with UA-cam and podcasts to have people giving unfiltered opinions, but I hope the younger people watching this will appreciate that for Dave to give these honest opinions in the early 2000's on mainstream television was extremely edgy and powerful.

I thought Dave was just being bitter over his own loss to Jay.
Leno is for boomers. Dave is for Gen Xers. Conan is for millennials. Jimmy Fallon is for somebody. I still don't know who Carson Daly is.
Fallon is for the NBC execs.
I'd say Conan is for Gen Xers, millennials were still little kids when Conan started out. Dave and Leno were both of the same era.
@@Highlander77 Conan was very popular with us millennials.
