- This week, we look at every major news channel running amok with the recently resumed television ratings by the #BroadcastAudienceResearchCouncil. The clamour around which channel made it to the top was finally settled. Spoiler alert, it’s all of them. Arnab took the cake, of course, with a long and breathless name-calling tirade.
When not claiming to be number one, news channels were busy playing sidekicks to the state machinery that put its entire weight behind the propaganda film of the year, #TheKashmirFiles. We look at their not-so-subtle PR campaigns, with a tadka of drama. And the complete decimation of the idea of “facts”, taken apart piece by piece, in relentless nightly tamashas.
To recover from this din of disinformation, we spoke to a journalist who actually reported from Kashmir during the late ‘80s and ‘90s - Alpana Kishore, who worked for Newstrack.

I am a muslim and heres what I have to say- Defending yourself/your beliefs is *not* a reason to deny the pain, trauma and history of others. Saying "no this did not happen" is a disrespectful and painful jab at those Kashmiri hindus who lost their families and friends in the massacre and needs to be stopped, immediately. As muslims, let us remember that each time we deny the facts and figures of this event, we are doing the exact same thing thats been done to us whenever we have spoken about Islamophobia. The violence that took place against the Kashmiri pandits was horrifying, disgusting and shall remain a trauma for generations. At the same time, using this movie to start another war against muslims of this generation who did not have anything to do with the violence is also stupid. I personally know Muslims who saved Hindu friends and neighbours during the exodus by hiding them in their hours moreover Kashmiri militants are also responsible for the deaths of thousands of Muslims too. Let's remember that there are good and bad people in every home, community and religion. This movie is a lesson for the government to take action BEFORE such mass crimes take place and to reinstate Kashmiri Hindus BACK to their homes as soon as possible. Instead of wasting money on useless projects like demonetisations, changing names of cities or the farmers bill, WHY IS JUSTICE TO KASHMIRI HINDUS NOT BEING PRIORITISED? The government is busy inciting violence between communities, instead of taking actual action to give justice to those who have been hurt.

So, that's the thing : the intention of the movie was NEVER to spread hatred against innocent muslims. Smal spoiler alert lol but towards the end of the movie, they do mention that there were innocent muslims also killed by the terrorists.
When a movie raises a voice for victims, we should understand and feel for the victims, not become selfish and make it about religion. The terrorists made it about religion; we should NOT. we should put aside the religious aspect and have empathy. That's how we come together

All my Kasmiri Pandit friends have actually supported the movie.I've studied in a school chain established by KPs in Delhi-NCR. Many teachers and students over there were KPs.

Yes, Newslaundry is right. The truth of kashmiri pandits was so well covered are talked that me and my all friends never heard of it till now as an Indian throughout my life but The Genocide of Jews are known to every classmate since class 9th, which is not even an Indian issue. I am not comparing the two genocides but none was less heartshaking than the other.

Kashmir files is an excellent movie showing what really happened to Kashmiri Pandits....the brutal killings,rapes,them being forced to do many other things etc
The Indian media promoted the movie but not in the right way,they were just making it worse by being too dramatic...I repeat this has to do with the news channels and ofc the Government.No offence to the movie here.I said that they were being dramatic...ie it's because any of them never talked about how we as a very diverse country should be more conscious and cautious of the circumstances that arise out of religion chauvinist...the riots and mass killings on the name of religions.
This movie truly deserved huge support so that people can be aware of such exodus but the media failed to capture people's mind and make them understand how the religious extremism can bring this much issues.
In case of Kashmir at that time it was not the religion Islam but the severe extremism that led to all that's happened.In future I wish there won't be any such serious issue in the name of religion and its extremism ,caused by any particular religion.

Facts are not facts because people ingest, assimilate, analyse and then interpret it based on their narrative. The ideology that you subscribe will taint your glasses. If you have assumptions you can never reach the truth. The movie leaves on you to decide if the genocide happened or not. Its a really good film.

While making a mockery of other Indian news channels, the presenter spared no thought of actually interviewing the KPs who were the actual sufferers. Instead, he preferred asking this question from a lady not even living in India and has no KP connection. However, when mob lynching happens, all hell breaks lose for central govt.
Doesn't suit their narrative, hence they obviously didn't care to cover it.
Every event shown in the movie was real, even the last killing in which they came in counterfeit uniforms asked KP from the village to come out of their home and line up. 11 men, 11 women and 2 children were gunned down in cold blood - it is actually the Nadimarg Massacre in 2003. Which main stream media never highlighted and fake anchor like this call it propoganda.

Asking producer for donation is just silly. He has done a great favor by simply bringing this lesson in history in front of all indians. He should be admired and appreciated for it and he deserves every rupee he earns for this effort. As a movie maker, he could have chosen any topic but he chose this one. So hats off to him. He has already done enough in the last 4.5 yrs and many generations are going to watch this movie in future. Whether he chooses to donate more or not is his personal choice.

Agreed, have been a follower of Newslaundry for quite some time. One good thing about this movie is that these self proclaimed neutral channels have been exposed. Very disappointed to see Newslaundry also belonging to that category. Probably the Deshbhakt has maintained the most balanced approach in this matter.
I feel bad for the pandits who are being mocked in this Left vs Right battle. While it is true that the plight of pandits has not received as much attention as the Gujarat riots or the plight of Km's, both of which are frequently discussed. The film has raised awareness of what transpired in the valley with KPs among the general public. It shouldn't be called as a propaganda film.
If the film was left as a film and the usual advertisement like a Bollywood movie it would have been alright. But, the film is backed by the government, their supportive media channels, loads of right-wing portals, and thousands of new hate posts created to promote the film. And this is why it's a propaganda film, similar in style to the ones done in the Natzi regime..

I watch your episodes regularly but you've lost me on this one. If you're so confident that this film diverted from facts, which you emphasized so much in this episode, you should've pointed out the exact misinformation shown and given us the actual facts, just like how you do in other episodes with the misinformation shown on other channels on any topic. What context is your ex- boss talking about? Is she trying to say that the atrocities on kashmiri pandits were justified in a particular context? Nowhere does this film blame Muslims for all of it. It says terrorists or Islamic terrorists, all through. Terror must be condemned regardless of the underlying belief/ cause/ faith/ religion. I watched The Kashmir Files a couple of days back. There is no such thing as propaganda/Islamophobia in the movie. The movie throws light on the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide without any sugar-coating. This is a masterpiece.
There maybe no propaganda in the movie but the people who made it surely are using it as a tool to facilitate chaos and hatred for muslims

Hi NL, I make a point to watch every episode of yours and frankly I respect the type of reporting you guys do, but I can't wrap my head around this one. In the video you agree that the KPs have gone through those horrific times and I understand it's a sensitive issue to be discussed, but I can't understand how in the same breath you deem the entire movie as a "propaganda". You do realise how demeaning that is to the pandits who actually went through that ordeal, how their emotions are bursting out in movie theatres. They are not crying because someone made a "propaganda" movie on them, but they are crying because their pain is now atleast being portrayed in a mainstream movie.
You might assume it's a "propaganda" just because the context for the exodus is not shown in the movie nor does the movie mention jagmohan or bjp. Let me ask you this, did you ever see a collective meltdown by the pandits or other hindus when movies such as Haider or Mission Kashmir came out? Even these movies and many others showed only one aspect of the pain of Kashmiris and willfully ignored the pain of pandits. But you never saw people collectively declaring these movies as propaganda. Please do not water down the pain of the people genuinely affected by this dark episode of history.

I don't think entire background of the Kashmir can be shown in a 3 hr movie. The point of making The Kashmir files was to show the pain of the Kashmiri pandits which was not covered in depth. And the reaction of Kashmiri pandits post watching the movie itself shows the way they relate to the movie. Also, like NL team, many people are disappointed with the movie because it has only underplayed the the pain of Kashmiri pandits.

Jagmohan was governer who was appointed by Indira Gandhi not BJP. You are not pointing on 19 Jan and government in central but situation was planned by Farooq and JKLF.

However, If the film is based on propagandist agenda, your review is one too - we have to accept that kashmir has been reported in an angular sense historically. Look at CNN BBC or any international news media outlet - they have completely missed out the exodus. The victim was denied treatment and died, police burnt her body, the parents couldn't even see the body, the entire Valmiki community got offended - these visuals was shocking. I tend to agree even though I'm pretty left leaning myself, wiki says only about 80 kashmiri pandits were killed but as someone who has talked to many families who ran away from kasmir the real number seems to be much larger and abhinandan calling it exodus instead of genocide is a big turn off.

As a young journalist, I covered the Kashmir separatist movement approximately from 1989 to 2002. This opened my eyes like nothing else would. In those days, the entire Western correspondents' corps would periodically descend to Srinagar from Delhi to cover the events in Kashmir. At some point, because of the strife, there was only one hotel open in Srinagar, the Adhoos on the Jhelum Bund. The foremost voice in those days was that of Mark Tully, the bureau chief of the BBC News عربي, and an internationally recognised journalist. The Indian National Congress government was then accusing #Pakistan of funding, arming, financing, and training inside Pakistani Kashmir, the Indian Muslim militants (JKLF in those days), and then sending them back across the LOC border to create havoc. Mark Tully’s contention was that it was not true. And in this, he was followed not only by the entire Western correspondent group, but also by most of the Indian newspapers and magazines, stringers, and correspondents in Kashmir (like India Today).
I was the lone voice that felt it made sense, and wrote so not only in the French and Swiss papers (Le Figaro) I was working for, but also in articles in the Hindustan Times, Indian Express and Bombay’s tabloid Blitz. The ethnic cleansing of the Kashmiri Hindus (the term ‘Pandit’ is misleading) shocked me beyond belief: I saw for the first time that a people in the name of their exclusive and intolerant religion, could kill, rape, maim, and chase out another people from a different religion, who had lived side by side with them for generations. Till today, the plight of the Kashmiri Hindus hounds me.
In 2004, I received in the Parliament of India, at the hands of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (photo) the Nachiketa Award for Excellence in Journalism. With it came a cheque of 50,000 rupees and I decided to use the money to curate for the first time an exhibition on the plight of the Kashmiri Hindus www.factmuseum.com/kashmiri-pundits/). This exhibition was opened in Habitat Centre, New Delhi, by Srisri , L K Advani, and was visited by numerous leaders of that time, including Murli Manohar Joshi, Dr Karan Singh, and many others. We then travelled India with this exhibition: Bombay, Calcutta, Bangalore, and Chennai. Then, thanks to the help of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar we showed it in many parliaments around the world: Scotland, England, Germany, Poland, Israel, and others, and in 2011 in Capitol Hill, Washington, which led to a US Congress resolution, taking notice of the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits. This was the first time that the ethnic cleansing of the Kashmiri Hindus was brought into the public domain, much before the film #KashmirFiles
I am also proud to say that shortly thereafter, my wife and I put up an exhibition - the first one ever - on the Hindu holocaust www.factmuseum.com/hindu-genocide-over-the-years/ from the Hindu Kush, where 500,000 Hindus died, while being taken as slaves to Afghanistan, to Mumbai 2011. This exhibition is now permanently housed at the FACT Museum (the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum of Indian History, Pune), which Namrita and I started in 2012 on 5 acres of land donated by @srisri. It was not enough for us to have only the Hindu holocaust exhibition and the Kashmiri Hindus Habitat Centre replica, we decided also to show - as they were - the tyrants who were instrumental in that genocide, We have for instance, a unique exhibition on the Goa Inquisition (www.factmuseum.com/the-portuguese-and-the-goan-inquisition/) another one on Aurangzeb based on his own records, and one on Tipu Sultan (www.factmuseum.com/tippu-sultan/) has been unnecessarily and unjustly glorified.

He was particularly angry at the depiction of the razing of the Somnath Temple, a painting which was based on an edict (firman) of Aurangzeb, which he had approved and stamped with the Emperor’s seal. @narendramodi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat heard about it in an article published by The Hindu, and called me to Ahmedabad. He subsequently flew to Bombay in 2016 to open our Shivaji Maharaj exhibition 'www.factmuseum.com/chhatrapati-shivaji-maharaj-a-hero-for-modern-india/ with Sri Sri.

Bro, I was born in Srinagar in the early 90s... my grandfather (Lt. General Retd. PVSM,AVSM,VSM) who was a Major General then was the chief of staff of the Kashmir Valley-based Corps Headquarters. .... my whole family can attest that things were shown out of context and without thorough insight or background research in the film. Also, the time timeline of things were grossly muddled up ( half the things shown in the movie did not even happen at all or did not occurs in the late 80s- early 90s. This film is emblematic of an extremely heavy handed and erroneous representation of actual facts in the garb of ideology.

Long time viewer, and first time commenter. I have loved NL and especially the interviews. I remember seeing this video last year and was surprised that I was unable to remember any criticisms discussed therein. Hence I revisited the video today, sorry to say that while the jibe at Godi Media was good and humourous, the Kashmir Files criticism seemed to stem from a place of personal angst and not objective reporting. Of course, hats-off to the reporter for Newstrack who covered the story way back when but to say that one must understand the context is like saying that the first 30 minutes of Schindler's List should have tackled the 'usurer' trope of European Jews, the rise of the Weimar republic and the disposition of the kaiser. No context can justify killings. I was hoping to see that you would say, "Oh this particular scene has been exaggerated" or This is factually incorrect. But for all the cheeky comments of "Who said facts are facts?" you did not provide any alternative facts or refute the claims of the movie, rather shielded yourself by "context matters". I would have even taken a "The movie isn't well made and should have done a better job of explaining the context" but to say that this is factually wrong is, well, factually wrong.

Abhinandan sekhti's neighbours says that his Abhinandan's mom has spent her life in the kotha on the GB Road between 1980 to 1995. And Abdul was her regular client in those days.
“The Kashmir Files” is technically well made and deals with the horrendous exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. However this film was NOT made with the simple intent of telling a powerful story. It is a politically driven film, made with the intent to scratch the wounds of the past, furthering a divide at present while alienating/promoting discrimination against one community across India.
Here are a few FACTS to keep in mind while BJP tries to extract political mileage from this unfortunate episode in independent India's history:
1. During the exodus, BJP supported Janta Dal was in power, NOT Congress(Yet the film manages to blame Congress.).
2. Vishwanath Pratap Singh was the Prime minister of the BJP supported govt.
3. BJP leader Jagmohan was the governor of J&K at the time.
4. Consider how the film does not even mention the above 3 factors while blaming the entire Kashmiri Pandits tragedy on everyone else, such as student groups, activists, journalists, liberals, secularists, leftists, and ironically all groups that are critical of Hindutva/BJP ideology. Clearly the film is political propaganda.
5. During that period the seeds of Hindu-Muslim divide was being planted in the country by BJP. Ram Mandir issue was also heating up. They were lighting the fire, Muslim fanatics spread the fire, and since then the Kashmiri Pandits have been used as a vote bank for BJP (Film obviously ignore this.).
6. The BJP formed govt at the centre 4 times since 1990, yet they haven't done anything to rehabilitate the Kashmiri Pandits. Why? To add insult to injury, the BJP formed a gov with PDP, a Kashmir based political party that has support from separatist elements, a party who's official stance was denial of Kashmiri Pandits rehabilitation.
7. How do you decide which lives matter the most and which massacre is the worst? Google the 1947 Jammu Massacres. 100,000 Muslims were killed by extremist Sikhs and Hindus….. Meanwhile the number of Kashmiri Pandits killed during the exodus is 399. Over 15,000 Kashmiri Muslims were also killed by terrorists in that same period. Sikhs were also minorities in Kashmir, and they were also targeted in the valley by the militants, same as Kashmiri Pandits (google Chattisinghpora massacre), yet the Sikhs did not flee from the valley like Kashmiri Pandits. Why don’t these stories matter? Films have been made on Kashmiri Pandits, books have been written on the Kashmiri Pandits exodus. Therefore, this may sound harsh, but at this time it is pure privilege for the Kashmiri Pandits to claim neglect when literally nobody talks of the other communities that have been killed. (ofcourse, this movie also ONLY talks of the Kashmiri Pandits. No other community.)
8. In response to a recent RTI question, District Police headquarters of Srinagar has informed that Kashmiri militants had killed 1,724 people in Jammu and Kashmir since inception of militancy in 1990, of which, 89 were Kashmiri Pandits, and 1,635 of other faiths! If this is true, why do we only hear of the Kashmiri Pandits?
9. The film maligns phrases like “intellectuals” and demonises “leftists”, making it even more obvious that the film has a clear cut political agenda for a particular party. It reeks of anti-intellectualism and the film attacks a particular university (JNU). Only one political party benefits from such smearing tactics.
10. Vivek Agnihotri, the director, is often on television debates defending BJP and spinning narratives for BJP. Actor Anupam Kher is also very vocal and his wife is in BJP. Actor Mithoon Chakraborty is a BJP politician himself. They are NOT going to make a balanced film. They are all modern versions of Goebbels. Google “Goebbels.”
11. Many politicians of the ruling gov, including the PM, congratulated the makers of the film. That barely ever happens. Hopefully Vivek Agnihotri will finally get his Rajya Sabha seat.
In short, the purpose is to ignite fire. Keep it burning while spinning narratives for the current folks in power(The usual “hindus are in danger” nonsense and “All liberals/leftists are enemies”.). Using cinema as a tool for propaganda can have disastrous consequences.

Excellent points except the problem started with the rigged election in 1987, 2 years before VP Singh became PM. And I believe he was PM only for a period of a year. The actual violence/exodus may have started in 1990, not sure. Great points otherwise. As Aparna mentioned, if you look at it through very narrow prism, then KF is the ultimate truth. However, if this Vivek Agnihotri guy who is out and out political hack had shown in the film that many Muslims were killed as well, then the film may have lost its polarizing appeal, which obviously he didn't want to do. He was actually once invited for some guest lecture to Harvard of all places where he claimed terrorism in Kashmir is not India's biggest problem but it was Maoists who had infiltrated 40% of India's districts. Later Abhinandan challenged him in a interview where he said "facts are not facts", the real number was 6%, so he was off by a good 600%. Anyone who is taking this film as the holy grail of truth on a very complex problem, one of which does include Islamic radicalization of Kashmiri youth at that time, is falling for propaganda which is part of much larger political discourse in present day India.

Watched the entire video, waiting for the part when you guys actually explain how the movie is a propoganda. I understood your point that the mainstream news media is going bonkers. But come on News Laundry! for how long are you going to only talk about the mainstream media segment? Without even mentioning about what's shown in the film, do you think by playing some funny background music and showing cheaply edited clips of the director, you'll manage to deviate the minds of your viewers? The title of your video and the content within has contradicted itself. It's amazing how certain media segments including yours are trying their best to come together and call this movie a propoganda. Some did so even before the trailer of the film had launched.
There have been a few movies earlier which claimed to show the 'truth' regarding the atrocities which were committed against the indigenous people living in the Kashmir valley, it's ironic they managed to do so without even a single mention of the crimes which actually happened and conveniently glossed out over the genocide of Kashmiri Hindus. I wonder where were you then NewsLaundry? Despite the confidence of the makers of this movie right from the word go. As opposed to the usual escapist and evasive disclaimers, this movie's disclaimer does not distance the makers from the movie. Instead they own upto it which shows the faith in their research.
As the nation talks about the plight of Kashmiri Pandits today, I could see your so called 'concern' when you talked regarding the earnings of the film to be distributed. I say, show some more of this 'concern', for the sake of your 'independent' and 'true' news coverage. Kashmir Genocide is just one chapter among the many other dark events this country has witnessed. I challenge you guys to talk about these issues as well

Being a media student I've had my own share of healthy discussions with my teachers inspite of differences in our thinking and even my friends who are from the minority. Not every incident which happened in this country was just for a political or economic gain, many have been based on the indigenous civilization as the target and it's destruction the sole motive. You have the right to disagree with me but i would strongly suggest you to read about the topics I've mentioned in the ending of the main comment. As far as a conversation is concerned if we choose to be silent on everything as if it has never happened, we will become a society which has no understanding of it past, which will live in an incoherent present and hurtle towards an indeterminate and potentially bleak future.
