Sensory habituation!! It’s a neuroscience term. Give it a google search!

it's called habituation! "the diminishing of an innate response to a frequently repeated stimulus."

Cities that do not stay silent are widely written about; one could say there is a charm to a place’s sonic characteristics. I recommend the book written by Alfred Döblin's novel entitled Berlin Alexanderplatz - although set in Germany, a lot of the language can be applied to London and surrounding boroughs

You’re not listening. It doesn’t stay as sensory overload. The body adapts.

You get used to it! I once had a dorm near train tracks for one year and I couldn't get used to it because I was often only at my dorm for half of the week. I recently moved into my own apartment which is also near train tracks and it's only a problem when they work on the tracks at night (unusual noise), but the regular trains never bother me.

I used to live near a train station. I never once woke up to the freight trains coming though all night, but the first metro train coming along at 5am always woke me up.

My friend once lived close to the airport, it’s the same. After some time he wouldn‘t hear the plane noise anymore. You just get used to it if it’s a pattern

I remember when I moved to a house with a tram passing by literally under the window and I felt unconfortable with the noise. After living in my new home for a while I never even noticed the noise anymore. I got so used to it.

I lived in the bar/club/tourist area in the centre of Rome (Trastevere) for a year and a half. I'm a light sleeper...it's safe to say it was difficult. Ear plugs saved my life but weren't enough with all the drunk people screaming outside until 2am and then the market stalls setting up at 5am...

Also zone 1 & I’ve found the quietest out street gets is between 3-4am but there’s still always a fair amount on taxis, lorry’s & uni students no matter what day it is
After 4 years here I’m so used to it and struggle to sleep when I visit family in countryside / seaside towns

  • @socalodeas
    @socalodeas 4 місяці тому +1

Yup, it happens. Lived in Manhattan for a while and you get used to the ridiculous ambient noise. In some ways, "normally quiet" is a problem, because then loud cars, bikes, trucks, sirens will wake you up. But if those sounds are nearly constant - it becomes normal, and its absence would freak you out.

I lived in a city where I am very close to hospital, airport and a police station. You hear them go off every night and airplanes fly not so quietly when they are about to land. I slept peacefully after hearing the noises for like 4 months. I can't sleep well when it's quiet.

When I was growing up we had a ‘grandmother’ clock in the house (think a shortened version of a grandfather clock that hangs in the wall). It made a loud ticking sound. But most of the time I couldn’t hear it unless I concentrated on it. Through so much exposure my brain filtered it out. When I go back to my mom’s place I will hear it for several hours before my brain decides to filter it out.

Wait, what? They are coming during night with their noisy trucks? Im living in the middle of Berlin, also pretty busy street and i definitely wake up when when they start pulling out the containers but its always happening early in the morning or maybe between 6-12am depending what street you are. But i guess thats because there are rules and laws for everything in germany and Ruhezeiten (times of the day that have to be silent per law) are implemented in pretty every field.

it filters it out. I used to live in a city and totally ignored the garbage truck noise, and when we moved to a small town the noise of them totally wakes me up, and since it isn't everyday I'm not used to it, but I'm the last one to leave the house and others don't wake me up anymore, but as soon as my dog makes some noise in sleep I'm awake. just brains being somewhat weird. also I used to have no issue falling asleep with the lights in city but now sleep with a mask😅

I'm British but live in Italy and between midnight and 06:30 there are at least 10 drunk people going home shouting, there are two rubbish collections, random people are driving around all night, and then public transport starts at 06:30...
In Britain, I lived in the centre of a city and heard almost nothing..

Where I live we used to live in the 90s had a lot of power outages, so alarms going off early in the morning was so common for us. Had a posh friend stay over once and she was up with it most of the night. Turns out the electricity didn’t cut as much where she lived as it did in my council estate and never came back. Found out I was poor that day. 🤭😅

People who live near airports have a similar experience but if you stay near there for the first time you won’t believe how close planes fly over people’s gardens and how loud it can be good thing is the planes can’t fly during specific hours but that’s not an international rule

  • @raraavis7782

For people who are bothered: you can get custom fit silicone earplugs at those places, that make hearing aids. I got mine for 60€, although that was quite a while ago. It's probably more expensive now. But still...good investment. You literally can't feel them and they won't fall out during the night, either. They block typical night noises very well, but you will still hear the typical shrill noise of an alarm clock.

I know a few people who work in a theme park. Usually they work at 1 or 2 rides a day.
