- Learn how to use a string trimmer, also knoI wn as a weed eater or weed wacker. I discuss and demonstrate (most) 10 different skills with a trimmer including edging a sidewalk, ,edging a flower bed and a tree ring. I also show how to cut large areas. Then I show how to do a few gray area uses of the trimmer such as blowing off clippings, trimming hedges, defending against wasps and removing tire marks from the driveway. Hopefully you will gain some valuable tips and improve your skills as a string trimmer master.

Any manual skill automatically has increased credibility if the instructor has a southern drawl. Thank you, sir!
I couldn't agree more
I loved me some Southern folks👈💯👍
My peruvian wife noticed this as she sees me always watching videos on machines, handyman how to's, farming, etc. The thicker the accent, the better the information and more ingenuity! Haha

You strike me as one of those rare guys who:
1. Knows what he's doing to the point where he can explain it simply.
2. Is definitely not afraid to work, and probably inspires others on the crew to work hard and do a good job as well.
3. Takes pride in a job well done.
Thanks for the video!
Exactly this. It's probably why he seems so "handsome" to me. It's hard to find someone his age and younger that do those 3 things, or even 1 .
@@mlbashanti8885 You aren’t looking in the right place if ya thinks that’s a whole truth 😂 young “workers” do exist too. Been teaching myself how to do any and everything since 17 :)
@@9LivesNoHate I said "it's hard to find" so while you should always be proud of yourself as a "young worker" you're being very biased in thinking "young workers" are everywhere 😂 I literally turned 27 today well yesterday since it's almost 3am so I'm technically young still lol, and I see it daily where "young people" do NOT want to work. They slack off ALOT, skip important parts to try to make shit easier and they will not listen for the life of them. They also think they can get a job, work 2-3 days then quit. They think it's normal I guess. But to me, they are just losers 😂 if you have done what you say then congrats you may not be one and you should be proud. But don't say I haven't looked because it's very easy to see that these last couple generations have terrible work ethic, and also think they can just say "sorry" and "I didn't know that" like it's gonna help them. 1. It won't and 2. Take responsibility. This may be a long comment but it's all truth. It's very hard to find. I'm a female, I work hard and try to learn daily from what I do. My wife is a VERY hard worker and it's one of the things I find most attractive about her. Work ethic is hard to find when all people wanna do is get free things in life.... :)
True
Love how you put it, perfect example for me to follow
Self defense mechanism. Hell yeah. Saved the best for last. Wonderful video. I'm a homeowner doing only my lawn, but exceptional instructional videos like yours teach me the techniques used by pros. The more I practice the better my lawn looks. Thanks.
Thank you so much I am a widow I have to do all my yard work helped me so much had been struggling with my weed eater for quite some time it really helped me to watch your video people out here like me do appreciate it so much thank you God bless😊
Thanks for watching the video.
Thank you. I needed help. Didn't know who to ask to help me understand how to use this trimmer. I put new line in 3- times today and then gave up. You've taught me what I was doing wrong. Thanks!!!
Over the summer when i was a teen i worked for my uncles landscaping company. I only ever was on the weed eater and man my back got so strong.
Hi I'm a home owner and have a echo srm 266. I like the idea of taking the cover off for the reasons you mentioned. Did nearly my whole back yard (jungle) today with no cover, what a joy! And it doesn't collect dirt and debris in the cover. Thanks for your tips. I feel like a real landscaper 👍
This is an awesome video, I have been mowing my lawn and using a trimmer for more than 20 years, I never realized how much time I wasted.
Thank you, your last skill was also a good sense of humor and practical.
I'm off for the first time to try your great tips!
When doing lawn edging with a trimmer pay attention to where the fuel tank is located. If you don't have a full tank of fuel or you tilt the machine in the wrong direction you will end up with the pickup line in the tank out of the fuel level. The grass trimmer is in my opinion probably the one biggest addition to doing lawns and I have been at it for 76 years. When I started all we had was the muscle building hand trimmer.
One of the best videos on UA-cam.
The last Line trim video I watched taught me nothing.
This video is top. Thank you "Lawn Care Life".
I've been cutting for about a year now and you've given me some skills to practice and remedies to situations I hadn't thought of, like the wet tire marks in the side walk. Thanks!

Imma try the tree trimming technique at my neighbors house. He'll be so happy when he gets home from work!
Wanna do the neighbors here I am sure they will be more than happy
I give you an A+. I mow my grass but i needed to use the trimmer on the bank. I feel confident in trimming it. Never used one before. Thanks a lot.
Edging with a string trimmer has proven to be the most useful skill for as long as I have been doing lawn care. The very first edge of the year will always be done with a blade, but a string trimmer thereafter. The amount of time one will save by not having to pick up/put away an additional tool (the edger) will mean more money in your pocket. Another skill I have found invaluable is the ability to trim in such a way that I can determine which direction the trimmed debris will go. This skill will help keep areas that need to be debris-free, clean.
I agree with both your points. Thanks for sharing
Anyone can mow, but trimming separates the masters from the beer-chugging Joe's. For some odd reason I've always found it easier to walk backwards along steep hills. An invaluable video - THANK YOU! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wonderful humor! I still need a haircut. Lol

Best not edge it lol
Just bought my first house and am having to maintain a lawn for the first time in my life. Today was the second day of me trying out string trimming and I definitely should have watched this video first! I didn’t know they were so versatile and will definitely need to get used to handling it- can’t wait to get to the point where I’m comfortable taking off the guard, it seems so much faster to use it without the guard on!
Awesome video. Since owning my house I can safely say I've applied every maneuver you demonstrated here. Thanks!!
You sir, are an artist. Don't let anyone ever tell you differently! I'll bet you can make coffee with that thing! The first time I used a string trimmer I almost lost an eye, but that's another story. Thanks for the tips, Jason.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching the video
Thank you!!! This was an Awesome, Enlightening, and Entertaining tutorial. I like doing my own lawn work and what I've learned will help me work smarter and not as hard. As well as make my lawn/landscape look even better!!!!
One thing I always do for the higher end and comertial customers is float the edges. It makes for a real sharp manicured looking edge. I also use a string trimmer for most edging except for the early spring deep edge. Of course I've been doin lawn maintenance and landscapes for 40 years. Started as dad's helper. By time I was 10 I could handle that trimmer better than most people. A good trimmer man is very hard to find. I actually think women do better as they are detail oriented. Good video.

@@justinflores7131 I'm only 45. Started at age 5 Workin with Dad doing lawns and gardens for doctor's and lawyers. For the last 25 it was comertial and residential landscape, lawn maintenance, ranch land management. I retired from the work last year at doctor's request.

Float the edges 🤔🤔... intriguing now I will look that up😄

Thank-you for teaching me these valuable skills. I did improve after much practice and my yard looks awesome especially edging with a trimmer.
Thank you for teaching us in such a straight and to the point way, Jason! Definitely going to implement these skills-hope I never have to use it in self defense!😉
Going to buy my first string trimmer tomorrow. Have never used one. I feel like I'll be pretty good if I follow these tips.
nwfp nwfp ahh yes. Used scissors to trim my lawn XD
It’s just practice keep doing it I seen it’s been a month keep trimming with it and get a good feel
You are making that look easy Jason, but I know that takes a lot of practice to master using the trimmer like you do, especially to edge well.
I have a lot of practice though not as much anymore since I am mainly doing weed control and fertilization
I just start on my first crew ever and they have me on the stick iv been having a rough time but I'll get there. Hell I haven't blowed out no windas yet

Thank you for this info...just got a string trimmer and I know it's easier said than done but I feel empowered, oriented on what to do now. Appreciate your through video👍👍👍👍
Thanks a lot for posting this! Using this tool properly is going to make the Lilac line at my parents' house look beautiful and be so much easier to maintain. God bless!
Thank you so much. I learned more from you than from the other video's. They all get too technical. You get right to the point. Thank you God Bless You.
Hey, Thank You! This was super helpful! I have 2 of my 5 children sitting near me and we learned a lot from your video. God bless you!
Thank you
Thanks for showing me how to edge the garden my neighbors garden had grass right up to the plants but I put an edge on it and trimmed all the grass away and it looks so much better.
I have an electric one i used for my small yard and have since moved to a larger house with land and got a straight shaft gas mower.. i feel okay usin it but im sure there is a technique to improve my skills..
Everyone says your a noob wit the guard on and i can see the benefits removing it, i have kinda found if it have the head almost touching the ground I get more flush cuts..
Thanks for the video
Thank you for this!!!! I knew you could do things like this with the trimmer but I had no idea how. Now I'm going to put the battery in my trimmer and go out and play.
i feel so inspired on how Jason demonstrate 10 different skills with a trimmer because on run a lawn care business with just one Trimmer. Thank you for sharing. I am situated in SA and we call it a 'Brush Cutter'.
My brother gave me a 12 second demo today on how to use my new trimmer... while it was off... he seemed to have a lot of faith in me. Anyway, I need to lift weights or something because my arms are noodles now 😫
Right! I was debating buying an electric trimmer but afraid it won't work as good as a gas one
Yea I have a greenworks pro and it's heavy per the battery
The electric ones are powerful if not as powerful as a gas imo
@scorpiodoll1101 battery powered trimmers/weedeaters are really good for home use, just not great for a lot of commercial use due to you needing to wait for a batteries to charge after they run out, and spare batteries can cost $100+. Tho they last long enough to cut 1 large home. And they're def lighter
You demonstrated perfectly thank you. I was getting ready to weed eat and needed to restring and decided to watch this and very helpful thanks again!!!
TXS for the tips especially the flower beds and the trees it's all good well appreciated.
Keep these videos coming, I appreciate seeing different ways.
Brother it's been Dry down south an it's so Hott outside in Arkansas so I watch your videos during a break so I know I'm not alone!🤘
Thank you for all your videos, they differently help me improve my lawn care skills. Keep up the great work.
Glad to see someone doing this edging correctly by walking backwards slowly because now days I see kids going forward like that and it doesn't leave near as good of an edge than walking backwards
Great video and great info.
I’m a stick edger guy because I don’t possess the skill it takes to edge with a string.I’ve seen guys that can work it like a surgeon.i can’t so I use the straight shaft edger.
Keep the videos coming
Stick edger is better most of the time on concrete I like to use the trimmer for flower beds
I cut my teeth in the biz with a line trimmer and z turn as my only equipment. For 2 seasons I cut edges(even at large apt. complexes) with a weedeater because that's what I was taught. I honestly got really good at it over those 7 to 12 hr days. I'm still faster using only a weedeater, but edger is what I use for those nice deep edges that need to be blown out. For audits I come back behind the edger with a weedeater to really make them pop, or when we are "racing the rain." But mostly I weed eat edges to show off! I banned all but one of my guys from doing it and he only does it in emergency situations, or to show off!
Great vid!
I love how he doesn't tilt the weed Wacker much.
As a beginner, I find myself pushing the string trimmer towards a surface and/or weed and tilting it at different angles to get a sense of hitting the weed so my string snaps often and I have to bump it.
In this vid Dan didn't change his string once.
Dan handles the trimmer very neutrally and only let's the tip of the string work and flat edges when need be.
So that might be what I have done wrong in the past.
I mean he did extend the string in this video, and probably did it during one of the multiple cuts. But yeah I fet your point
“You’re not tryna dig a trench”😂😂😂😂😂
Bro I thought hitting here and there and diggin was bad then I seen this guy and I’m a pro apparently 😎
Just bought my first ever string trimmer today, bout to jack up my lawn tomorrow. I hope these tips helps wish luck me..😅😥😰
Thanks for that, watching you work is like poetry in motion.
Thank you so much for this video! I can't wait to go e my skill using it as an edger! I really appreciate your instructions! Hugs from Texas

Thanks for the comment
Thirty or forty years ago there was a cartoon of a guy standing on the top platform of a step ladder getting set to use a string trimmer on a wasp nest. It still makes me laugh to think of it.
Thanks for this video. Going into the lawn care business and I'm going to keep these skills in mind .
I watched this in preparation to weed eat for the first time tonight!!! Great video!
The trimmer, most versatile yard power tool.
The latter half of this video became increasingly more entertaining...lol.
Who knew string trimmers were so VERSATILE!
I'm from long island NY . I'm 6 foot 5 and I been landscaping for over 10 years now . Most hold the Wacker up high when edging . I always thought it was best to do the way you showed I can flat wack to edge in a split second doing it that way . Other way you gotta stop and lift the trimmer ul and slows you down
Just started working as a groundskeeper today and man you make that look so effortless
He sure does. Good luck in your new job. You will be a pro before you know it. It's a good profession.

Thank you for the video! I love mowing, and always wanted to use a string trimmer cause it cleans up everything nicely, but didn't know how to use and a little fearful of it. I'm excited to try it out after watching your video
A tool is only limited by the hands its in.
Wise words
Yep, and if you don't believe that just watch these BLM's riots! 🤔
Same goes for guns and knives, but librals don’t understand that 🙄🙄🙄
A camera being one of those tools.
Never put hands in tools!
Trimmers are directional. If you trim from right to left the grass flys toward you if you go left to right you stood the clipped to the front that’s very important around flower beds and certain areas
Thank you! I see so many "professionals " trim backwards and put all the trimming in the beds. Also I trim first then mow so any long trimmings are mulched up when I mow.
“You stood the clipped to the front”?
I like the passion ….. trimming is the skill that makes a good lawn guy ….
At 2:15 you gave me a shout out. Lol. You awesome. Thanks for helping us out Sir.
Thanks for the video. I am just starting using a trimmer. This video has been very helpful. Appreciate you man.
That's one good thing about the Echo PAS system. You can rotate and lock the lower part of the shaft. I only use my string trimmer to edge when I'm too lazy to break out my old McLane edger.
All very good skills to have as a landscaper for when it comes to weed eating. Though a good tip to keep in mind for edging beds (especially beds that have never had one), would be to establish the edge first with an actual edger tool to cut the deeper roots of grass types like Centipede & St. Augustine. This way (if legal in the state) chemical weed killers, or natural mixed weed killers can be carefully applied on the bed side to kill any shoots of grass that's invaded the bed. Allowing the beds defined edge to last just a bit longer.
I actually liked the last 3 or 4 that were not recommended but can be done in a pinch. Thank You.
Your a Genius! I laughed so much about the wasps!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Great information!
I already knew how to edge around a flower bed but now i know how to do it with a weed wacker
Using the trimmer as a force field against wasps. I like it.
Another helpful tip that comes with a couple years experience lol when edging with a weedeater it helps to bite in your lips because I have been popped in the lips on many occasion and it is not a pleasant experience
It's great info I love your attitude and seems like you have a great touch with that machine the way you cut grass with it looks great good job
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
Loved every minute of your video. Great work.
The blower trick is awesome , thank you.
Awesome man! I Especially like the edging part I always hold it up over my head 180 degrees with the ground that crap wears you out along with going and grabbing the stick edge i usually just use the string trimmer since its already in my hands
My dad's got me doing this its a real pain cause 70% is wide area places after awhile it gets tiring can't wait until grass season is over 😍
