5 Tips to Edge a Lawn with a String Trimmer Like a Pro

  • Learn how to edge a lawn with a string trimmer like a pro. I join my friends Jeremiah Jennings and Paul Jamison to provide 5 lawn edging tips when using a weedeater. Some people ask why not just use a stick edger. Those are great tools, but they are not great for flip edging around a flower bed or tree ring. I prefer to use a string trimmer for that. Also, edging with a trimmer keeps you from having to go grab another tool to finish the job. Included in the tips are not having the line to long or too short. I also recommended removing the guard but understand that you are increasing your risk by doing that. Jeremiah recommends walking in the same direction as you are trimming. Paul demonstrated how to make the initial edge. Enjoy the video and let me know if you have any additional tips in the comments.

Good stuff man, one thing about edging with a string trimmer is remembering to control where debris are being slung by either walking in the grass forward or on the sidewalk backwards to avoid flicking a rock into someones window. I find it to be much more stable to hold onto the shaft of the trimmer rather than the loop handle itself especially in st Augustine turf.

Jason, just wanted to add a couple of thoughts. I never used to use a guard, but after taking out three car windows, I changed my habit. I just learned to use the trimmer with the guard on it. I can see my object decently, and almost no more windows. I took out my truck window with the guard on, 25 ft away. But so far no more customer windows 🙂 Secondly, on my first edging of the year, I pull out my hard blade edger, run that on my edges, and the rest of the year, I use my string trimmer to maintain the edge. Thanks Jason! 😊

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

It takes some getting used to, but in my opinion you can establish a hard edge or starting point with a stick edger, and then clean out the groove easier with a string trimmer. My opinion is that you will always get a straighter edge with a stick, but a cleaner edge with a string trimmer. I only use a stick edger on new properties or corner lots with sidewalks.

Thanks for the tips guys, I've been helping out my disabled neighbour and found that my line keeps going inside my fast bump feeder because I don't bump it in time as it gets too short.
My trimmer rotates clockwise so it kicks up debris towards me, I might remove the guard as I have safety glasses.
My recommended guage is 2.4mm but I might try something thicker just for edging as it's about 2 inches thick.

    @smartdummy5751 2 місяці тому

I dont know if my theory is correct or not but here it goes.
You know how you're suppose to cut in the direction the head is spinning?
Well, when the head is placed perellel to the ground (how you normally would use a string trimmer), the string cuts in thw direction it spins.
So if you have a anti-clockwise the the side that would normally cut is now in the air so in a way to spinning force of head is pushing to the right instead of the left so you know gotta walk backward.
I saw this other video and it confused me cus the guy used an clockwise as was walking in the opposite direction the head was spinning so made me think if its the same thing as when the head is parellel to the ground.

With a 2 stroke weed eater, turning it upside down seems OK, but I just don't feel right turning my 4 stroke weed eater upside down, I can imagine engine oil lubrication issues. After all, 2 strokes have the oil mixed in the fuel.
Oh, and adding a little lube in the head plug from time to time is a good thing, too. If not enough lube, the head gets hot, and bad juju ensues...

    • @herculydia

NO. Sidewalks are generally 3 - 3½ inches thick and heavy. Occasionally sinking can occur if watering extensively, filling the edged crevice, causes an area of non compacted soil to condense. Roots are the #1 cause of uplifting.

I don't think anyone will answer this, but one thing I always wonder when I see videos like this is, does it make a difference that I'm left-handed?
Every video I've ever seen offering tips shows right-handed people, whereas my left hand is the one on the trigger.
I keep wondering if that would make any difference.
Maybe someone can help me out.
Regardless, this was an extremely helpful video. Thank you.

Adjust the handle so its comfortable for you then just practice. You'll get it

I appreciate both responses. I've had a lot of practice since originally posting my comment, and I can definitely see improvements.
      Thank you both.

@@chancesmalley6708 LOL, I love the Swamp Thing reference.
Yes I've been mowing a lot this summer and have definitely improved since I first posted my comment, but there seems to be no way to avoid being absolutely covered. My arms tend to be the worst once I finish weed-eating. They are just covered in grass pieces (and my face and neck also).
But I think I've got the technique down pretty good now. Thank you for commenting. Oh, and 5 acres? Yikes! 😬😬😬

Or you could make a couple hundred dollar investment and buy an edger so it would look cleaner and save your string. Crazy thought, I know
