I still cry, and I have replayed it 10 times at least. In my opinion, this is the best ending of a videogame of all time, alongside with "The Unwound Future".
I remember watching my older brother playing this game years ago. I tried to play it too, but I was very young and so didn't really understand the puzzles. So I watched him instead, and we were so excited when we got to the end. Our excitement changed to sadness though. A happy sadness almost. It was years ago, now. If only we got on as well now as we did then.
Maybe you can send him a message about that fond memory. If he misses you too he answer you for sure. If not then things will just stay how they are now, no?
What a beautiful comment - as I got to the end, the happiness from reading it changes to a happy sadness, just like your experience with this game. How thematic is that? Thank you for sharing this three years ago - I hope today that your relationship with your brother is where you wish it to be!
If it makes you laugh and stop crying, I spent about 5 minutes blowing into my 2ds's microphone just to realize my headphones had one and I had to blow on THAT one
Thank you so much for the great recording! I was crying at the ending and then I cried even more that I couldn't do the last puzzle on my DS because the microphone was broken :c
Well thank you for the kind words! This post really warms the cockles. It's unfortunate your microphone is broke on the DS, I've noticed that tends to be one of the parts that goes out a lot,, possibly because of a cost saving design. you could try rubbing a piece of wire inside the microphone connector to produce enough static noise to simulate blowing into the microphone, that can be a possible solution. Glad you enjoyed the ending!
@@Edomaden I'm in the same boat so thanks again for this video! Tried putting a paperclip in the 3DS microphone slot but no luck, maybe I'll be able to get the cartridge into someone else's (3)DS one day so I can progress past that point, but the video did me for the ending for now so thank you! :)
"Oh I get what Katia's involvement is. She's actually Sophia!" "Wait, Anton is in love with his own granddaughter?" "Oh I get it. Katia is not actually Sophia!"
Sophia actually spent her last days holed up in her room writing. Like it's tragic how when she finally did find what she was searching after for 50 years, she was already on her deathbed.
5:22 It seems like a translation error. It sounds as if the town weren't even inhabited. In JP version he said "The town, and the people, and whatever we see is a world fancified by the illusion"

@@superjoe1015 7:05 Also, Sophia's quotes became more specific in English. In JP, "I'm sorry, Anton. There's 'someone/something'(もの; can be either an object, a person, or an idea) else dear to me."
@@passecompose7484 Thank you for the clarification. The ending was ruined for me the first time around because I can't shake off the fact that Luke and Layton were going around town talking to themselves. This explanation gave the mystery way better closure.
It bugs me how Sophia didn't tell Anton anything about his daughter in the letter. She admits that she left to protect their baby, but she doesn't even bother to tell Anton what she named said baby. She refers to their child only as "Katia's Mother" and says she died shortly after Katia was born... That means that Katia can't even tell Anton about his daughter because she doesn't remember much about her. That just seriously bugs me.
I know. It bugs me too how she never tells anything about her first daughter, the REASON SHE LEFT IN THE FIRST PLACE, even though she was holed up in her room with plenty of time to write about it. I like to think it’s because she knew that Katia was going to try and get to Folsense around the same time the box left her possession, so it’s better to talk about her instead. Anything about their deceased first daughter can be said in the afterlife when Anton inevitably follows very VERY soon.
When I played for the first time I cried like a baby. All these years later I still do. This is why Diabolical Box is my favorite of the Original Layton trilogy.
Man, It's been a long time since I last Saw this, damn... The feels, not many games makes me cry, so sad that we might not have another game like the main series.
The mic on my DS was acting up when I did the box puzzle, but luckily I solved it! It was such a unique feature, that unfortunately most DS games don't use that often. Cooking mama used the mic feature and I think one of the Mario and sonic games did, I just wish there was more games that used it
I love how this game wasn't even the saddest. It was kinda sad, but it absolutely didn't prepare us for unwound future. That one was the final boss of sadness
I played this gane when i was 11 cause i like the art style now my mom back then helped me with a good majority of the puzzles but i got through the end of the game on my own but the moment luke solves the box and see the letter i felt my heart race hearing anton realize it was sophias letter to him and as i heard sophias words and the music box theme i actually started crying a little but this ending is so beautiful and bitter sweet even as an adult this ending is hitting harder especially after losing some family members snd my dog but just knowing one day i can be with them later on hits close to home
I really feel it’s a shame that we never really get to see Sophia in the game apart from the short scene at the end of the game when she’s in heaven and the bit in the past when Sophia and Anton were talking about her leaving and that Anton thought that she had left him for another and it’s sad that she had passed away by time Anton had received the letter from her in the box and that he never got to see the love of his life again and that we don’t get to see Katia’s mother either and it’s a real shame that she died shortly after Katia was born but I like how there was the loving relationship with Sophia and her granddaughter and that Anton loves Katia too and it feels similar to a mother and daughter relationship with Sophia and Katia which is really adorable too to hear about from Sophia’s letter too and the fondness and love she had for Katia too though it’s sad that since Folsense became stuck and that time had really just stood still from 50 years ago at the time of Layton and Luke’s time at the time when the story in the game takes place and it seems that from 50 years ago Sophia had been searching for the box herself ever since then but I feel sorry very much for Anton because he had given the box to a traveller passing through town to deliver the box to Sophia many years ago and it must have been always a hope with Anton that Sophia would eventually find the box again and it would eventually be delivered to her from Anton but that by time Sophia received the box and the letter inside from him she was dying then and that she wrote it a short while before she passed away but by then when Anton received the letter she had passed.
2:41 Anton & Layton fight for different reasons. Anton: Fights to get Sofia's "Who's actually Katia, but he doesn't know that yet" love because he thinks she chose Layton over him & that he might be the "other person" that he thought she left him for. Layton: Defends his life because he doesn't want to get hurt/die.
It would be interesting to hear how Anton and Sophia first met and I’m assuming I’m guessing that they both first met in Folsense or at Herzen Castle perhaps if Anton held a ballroom dance there or if Duke Herzen held a ballroom dance there and it’s not mentioned in the game whether Duke Herzen was married or not and his family history before then isn’t mentioned and talked about only that he was the father of his two sons Anton and Mr Beluga and I’m guessing that Anton and Sophia’s first meeting with each other could have been similar to the ballroom dance or maybe it was the same ballroom dance scene with Layton and Luke had when they were sleeping in the Castle and that could have been Anton and Sophia first meeting but then Layton and Luke somehow end up in that picture and in that memory from 50 years ago I think too.
Is it just me or does katia throughout the whole story since Layton and Luke met her at dropstone train station She’s always just acting really creepily around them just coming slowly into conversations and when they try to get the truth out of her she always like “I cannot say I’m afraid there’s no time anymore” something like that And it’s like at the beginning of the ending she’s just creepily standing at the top like she’s waiting for Layton and Luke and she’s just like we have to get out the castle and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah Just dilly dallying on the way.
However, I don’t know if the diary entries in the game include any information on how Anton and Sophia first met each other and fell in love if they had a positive loving relationship with each other because from what I know they did and I’ve never read the diary entries really I was concentrated a lot on the puzzles and the story mainly than the mini games when I’ve played the game before in the past.
