When it had been revealed that Celeste was Claire all all along, I was like "Don't cry, don't cry" ... When Layton was standing there, crying, taking his hat off he got from Claire, I had to bite my lips to fight back tears ... But when Luke said "But Professor, I'm not a gentleman!" I lost it - I bawled like a crybaby ...

the end of this game is the moment that layton can't keep his cool any longer, in the last six games in the timeline, layton always stayed rational in every situation, no matter how bad. losing the love of his life again brought that all crashing down, and that is just beautifully told. hats off to the Layton franchise
Technically this game didn't finish the franchise. It is the last chronologically but it wasn't the last game. Either way I agree, this game and it's ending were masterfully made.
@@spiraldj even still, throughout the prequel trilogy, in every situation, Layton is calm, collected and in control. He's incredibly adept at keeping his composure, and usually has everything figured out. I can't think of another major plot element of any of the games that he hadn't worked out besides that Celeste was really Claire, and he certainly never let out anywhere near as much emotion as he did in his goodbyes to Claire anywhere else in the games.
It's a testament to why they were a couple - she's the only person ever who could both stump him and break down his emotional barriers.
Can you blame him? He finds out here that the woman he loved and lost ten years ago is actually still alive, only he has to lose her all over again. That would break anyone.

No, and frankly I wish it wasn't cast in an outlandish light. Its alright for men to be vulnerable and emotional just as much as it is for women.
I remember this game being the first one to destroy my feels back in 5th grade. I still feel down after watching this.
Okay, this guy's been orphaned, unloved by people so much they want to betray him, and now he loses his first love.
He literally goes on life-threatening adventures just out of kindness towards other people, his own curiosity, and being a gentleman.

I love the dialogue between Inspector Chimney and Bill Hawks. It shows that even though you aren't punished for doing horrible things, the fate of justice will then show the truth to others eventually. Really hoped he got his karma on New Age of Steam

As a grown man, who learned what an awful, gruesome Cesspool this world can be, I can't really blame Clive... Sooner or later, this world, especially politicians and powerfull people take everything from you, but don't want to pay for it, they expect from you to stay sane, human and law abiding, while they break their own limits and rules constantly...

I feel like playing the games out of order kind of sucks as well because if you don't play them chronologically you don't get the impact of when he takes his hat off for the first time

yeah I agree, I actually played unwound future first cuz I didn't know about the series but still even at the end it still managed to leave an impact on me. I was decently surprised when he took off his hat too. and was mad that Bill Hawks wasn't punished and Clive was full of regret.
I'm going to ask the obvious question... why do the last games of the two trilogies have to have so many feels? T_T At least they do the evil thing of giving us loads and loads of feels and then tease us with more to make us happy. :P Here's hoping for a third trilogy, I know the developers said they wouldn't but they said the same thing after this game and then we got the prequel trilogy. So I'm still holding out hopes.

It's a fantastic game too. A rather worthy successor. :)

Level-5 said they were finished with Professor Layton's story, but not the series itself. And there are definitely two more since Level-5 also stated that Layton games are always produced in trilogies. And with news of a new game aiming for next year already surfacing, this will be no exception.
Level-5 said they were finished specifically with Professor Layton's story rather than the series itself. That's why the next continuation/trilogy features his daughter, Katrielle Layton, carrying on his legacy of investigative prowess and puzzle-solving. The funny thing being that she's an actual investigator as an occupation whereas her dad was an archaeologist who was just brilliant enough to solve complex cases when called upon.
This trilogy could provide some insight as to what happened with Hershel after the events of Unwound/Lost Future. And I so agree with you. The final games of the first two trilogies really poured on the feels and emotions, especially this game. Unwound Future is one of my favorite entries of the series to this day. I really felt for Layton in the game's final moments. :'(
Yeah I agree that Diabolical Box and Unwound Future has the best endings among the series. To all the comments here, it is not stated that Layton had another lover in the future, also claimed that his daughter was actually adopted. But I must agree, after I've seen the ending here in the Unwound Future, it would be very unpleasant for me to see Layton have another lover in the future. So I am pleased to let the series end here, and let his daughter continue the rest.
Neonom Actually, Layton didn’t actually find someone else. If you watch the anime (or just play the game to its end), you learn Katrielle is adopted.
pain and suffering: the game
It's happening, boys! When I saw the new teaser for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, this swiftly came into mind: 27:15. I feel that the letter contains the beginnings of Professor Layton and Luke's adventure.
Seeing this made me think twice before time travelling in Animal Crossing.
Unwound Future is perhaps one of my favorite puzzle-adventure games of all time. Certainly in my top favorites of the Layton series itself. I've played through both of the existing trilogies, but UF just really gave us insight into Layton's character. The story was emotional and really makes you feel for poor Hershel during the final moments of the game's story. :'(
I loved playing through it. Not saying I couldn't say the same for the other Layton entries as the fun of all of them (besides the puzzles) is unraveling the mystery through the course of the games.
Currently playing Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. With news of a new game for next year already surfacing, I have hopes for this new trilogy from what I've played so far.
My only real complaint on UF was that Bill Hawks completely escaped karma/justice. The tragic events of this game and Layton's early adulthood were all his fault and he has the gall to only blame one of the victims of his machinations.
FrozenTundra88 While I do believe that Bill Hawks does deserve a punishment, I don’t think he should get one. His lack of punishment embodies the futility that Clive felt and the very reason why he concocted such a plan. The stark juxtaposition between Clive, the victim, getting jailed directly because of Bill’s actions, and Bill himself, leaving mostly unscathed despite tearing apart the lives of many, in my opinion makes the game even greater.

I don’t understand how could anyone be so accepting of their fate? She just goes without a hesitation! She doesn’t even try to stop it in fact she actively stops people trying to save her! There’s something very interesting about her....
They messed with something they shouldn't and Claire saw what it created. She was scared that if they tampered with time any further, it could create something even more horrible. Not only that, but she saw the life of her loved one after she passed away, so she knew that even if she was gone, he was still living strong.
Such a great game. Hats off to Level 5, and to ZSlyzer for this LP.

I lost the ability to cry, now I'm just looking at them sad. Luke is just so nice. like, it's not even his girlfriend but he chase her anyway and that's just bitter sweet to see just how adorable Luke is, and that Luke and the Professor will part ways. and it's just sad to see Layton cry. I can't cry. I can only look sadly.

So why was this the first game that made me flat get the feels, it's like once the credits go I can barly hold myself, hold dem tears back with that fucking amazing credits theme (if I lived in JP I would defiantly wouldn't hold it), then once the credits is over with the luke scene... If you do research on time travel, it's actually fine -- AS LONG AS YOU DON'T ACTUALLY TRY TO DO THAT. you can discover formulas, some strange phenomena, but DON'T TRY TO ALTER THE COURSE OF TIME.

I came back here because of the newest trailer of "Professor Layton and the New World of Steam". I had a feeling that I had heard those words before: the opening of the trailer is the same letter that Luke writes to Layton here!
Even when completing the mobile port, I couldn't help but cry aloud at the end. It's from the few games that have melted my frozen-cold heart. It did in my earlier years, it did it again years later.
But whatever that letter has... we can only hope that New World of Steam is what's next.
There's one thing I don't think I quite understand. Claire was sent to the future (our present) right before the explosion, but in Dimitri's flashback he cried next to what appears to be her corpse. How's that possible?
Unless, like hinted in the dialog of Older Luke (Clive) and how Layton revealed the future Layton to be Dimitri, the game seems to follow the logic of time travel that the changes alreay happened in their known past but they didn't notice, to avoid the paradox of having nobody in the new timeline to go back and make this change to happen in the first place.
So is what Dimitri saw Claire *after* her last goodbye??
I think it worked like this. In that moment, a split second when the Time Machine exploded, she was sent forward in time to the events of the game in hand. She wasn't sure how, but she'd make the most of it. Though, it was lucky to be thrust into the same time and place Layton was, wasn't it? Anywho, after the game ends and she's sent back through the past, she's sent back to the point she came from...during the explosion. And, well, it killed her. Time is a hard thing to grasp, but it's still just...amazing how this game dealt with it.
Claire had to go back in time to the time of her explosion for the timeline to be self-consistent. Had Dimitri found a way to stop the “molecular instability”, there would have been no Claire to go back to the time of the explosion and die, thus creating a paradox. Therefore, it proved to be impossible and Claire had to die.
She got thrown into the future and then thrown back
That ending was almost tortuous... Sadly I have no magic words. It's just gut-wrenching.
Anyways, I mentioned this before, but this story is the 1st one of the PL series that's truly engaging and riveting. Not that I didn't enjoy the previous two, but the best parts were in the final stretches in those. As for Lost/Unwound Future, I went already presuming that the whole time travel thing was an illusion and for the most part, it did reveal as such. Even so, I got more surprises than I had expected.
There were a few things I wish we could've had:
1. While we technically do solve a few puzzles as Don Paolo, he was posing as Layton. I wish we got to solve at least a few as his own ID and get a victory animation with him.
2. Luke vs Clyde. Even after the latter's revelation, I still wanted to view him as an anti-Luke. I'm used to saying "fight", but really I would've liked to see more interaction between the two in the final stretches, and not just Layton vs Clyde.
3. A redeemable main villain in PL is nothing new as far as I've seen. Personally, I'd be more thrilled if Clyde entered the deep end all the way down to the grave. It's what I had expected after he was revealed to be the bigger villain than "Evil Layton", or Dimitri at that point.
4. I know they wanted to put us on edge till the very end, but to think Layton could've just pressed the red button much sooner. A chaotic moment sure, but he's... Layton.
As for Bill Hawks, I have... no magic words either.

This year is the 10th anniversary of this game so when are we getting the continuation that it promised by saying To Be Continued? We got a prequel trilogy yes but that was in the past. And Layton's Mystery Journey doesn't count since that is about his daughter.

Both trilogies ended with thousands of off-screen casualties. Kind of interesting.
I liked the Spanish version better. There it was localized as "Profesor Layton y El Futuro Perdido", so "Professor Layton and the Lost Future", which gave even more weight to that line from Claire, alongside the vocal acting.

The Multiverse Theory suggests that changing the past won’t change the future but rather make a new one alongside the future from before, a parallel world. Claire could’ve stayed in the future and tho the past would have changed, she and future would’ve been safe

I know there's an order but level 5 released spectres call after this one so this will make people buy that game just because there's a time line doesn't mean you have to play it in that order

Elouise Hodge though the question was about what's lukes adventure is going to be. ur answer was spectres call.. considering the time line. no that wasn't lukes adventure. plus the creators of level five take layton and his time line verry seriously. in the trailer released back in 2009 about spectres call they explained this is the story of how layton met luke and so where this takes place in the time line.
