- We've updated and rearranged our old #LoudList! Often dismissed as “Cookie Monster vocals,” the #Gutturals growling technique is difficult to master, but these guys (and girl) have emerged to become our picks as the all-time best.

Corpse grinder looks like he could survive a high speed car crash
He effectively can’t be strangled.
He also can survive decapitation with relative ease💪
That neck isnt gonna break anytime soon, that's for sure
Even the car crash wouldn’t survive.
He could just be walking across the road and survive a high speed car crash.

I hate Randy's vocals honestly. I can understand why people like them, but to me, he just over pronounces everything and it ends up being so cringey.
@Annoyed Froggiboi ,walk with me in hell
Loudwire needs to learn the difference between gutturals and just low growls lmao
Yes they do
Please explain that difference.
@@hinjurock guttural vocals are made with your tongue in an upward/downward position behind your teeth. And the sound is created by the messing with the airflow in the back of your mouth.
But those collectively are known as "Death vocals", no? There is also a difference between those vocal styles and grim vocals, which I think are higher-pitched.

alex its too young for this list.. its a great singer but doesn't have history
Opeth growls are incredibly unique, beasty and awesome
Akerfeld's voice was incredible in his prime. You could actually understand every word, that's quite rare talent. RIP his voice...
saw him on the last tour in europe and his growls were fucking untouchable
His voice improoved, it was his scream technique, which has changed.
Contrary to popular belief, Åkerfeldt didn't do falsecord growl before 2008, it was infact a type of fry growl.
But his technique changed after the release of watershed, only then he did false cord up to the present day.
Sad he never really practices it tho, he could sound soo much more beasty with dedication
Phil Bozeman is wildly underrated as a vocalist
Also, how is Corpsegrinder above Chris Barnes?
He kinda sucks
Well yeah, because his band sucks. His vocals are on another level for the type of music he does, really
@@amsalek Corpsegrinder uses an actual technique for his music.
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 no shade towards Corpsegrinder, he's a great vocalist. I guess I was talking in terms of Cannibal Corpse. Just think Chris was better for that band, but I get the argument
Seeing Mikael Akerfeldt at #1 made me excited like a little 13 year old fan girl 😆😆✌🏻
i genuinely smiled
Ben Duerr "Shadow of Intent" his guttural vocal is pretty sick

What about Ben Duerr, or CJ McCreery, or the 19 years old Greg Gilbert (Shrine of Malice)?
You mean vodka
Dude sounds like a fuckin grizzly bear
they didn't include him?? i'm already disappointed
Amon Amarth might not be very extreme as a band, but imho Johann Hegg has the most unique and interesting growls, as well as one of the most powerful... He definitely deserves an higher spot on this list
He didn't even deserve to be on the list. As well as many in this list. 😑
He doesnt even do gutturals 😂
@@thanatos8618 For sure. Whoever made this video know nothing about gutturals

Ben Duerr from Shadow of intent and Hollow Prophet, Adam Warren from Oceano, Rok Rupnik from Within destruction, Dickie Allen from Infant annihilator, Ian Bearer from Rings of saturn and Mark Poida from Aversions crown. I feel like all of these could get a spot in this list..
While I agree that most of these guys deserve a spot, it would have needed to be the top 30 to fit them all in as well as the mandatory entries.
CJ from Lorna Shore, Duncan Bentley of Vulvodynia, and probably Austin Dickey too.
Rings of saturn? 😂😂😂 i like that band here and there but best? You gotta be joking lmao
@@Dystxnnaustin dickey?? Brother doesnt even make it into the top 20 lol
@@Captain_Calcium that reply I made was 5 years ago, so yeah, you're probably right lol
Mike Patton can hit deep just like any of these guys but can actually sing too.
He doesnt really do guttural style vocals though, more throat singing and sometimes does false chord growls
Yeah Patton slaps but Mikael can also sing everything. Yeah most of these guys can't sing clear but still no one can defeat mikael

That's 100% correct. I bet tons of people who are into death metal started with a band like Amon Amarth. They're a "gateway" band.
Who in their right mind puts Phil Bozeman at #9?

*Loudwire boss* “Give this man a raise!! He’s genius!!”
Yeah these lists are pretty predictable unfortunately. Opeth is one of my favourite bands and Mikael is obviously a great vocalist but I would definitely not rank him #1. Way too many OSDM guys left off this list (Antti Boman, Craig Pillard, Ross Dolan, etc). Glad Lord Worm made the cut but he's bottom of the list...

They put a good musician as the #1 spot again just like how it's supposed to be? Wow they're doing fucking crazy work. Moron.
I love how the Chris Barnes clip is one of the oldest one here (and is from his absolute peak vocally), really shows how it all started!

Filip Gerhat you can find his vocal diary(with live unfiltered screams/growls/tunnels) right here on UA-cam.
Wow, nice that you included Runhild Gammelæter, and Peter Tagtgren!
Mike has a unique mic positioning technique. He puts the tip of his nose on the diaphragm and growls slightly below it. This gives a very unique texture to his growls with certain tweaks like keeping the gain a bit higher and the mids boosted. Loved that tweak!!!!

Cool list, but would have loved to see Oceano's vocalist. His growls are out of this world
I have to agree. Finally another Oceano fan.
YES! Totally expected Adam to be on this list.
@Designated Hessian and Whitechapel is?
@Designated Hessian the only core that is metal is metal core, deathcore, and grind core. Any other core is not and any other "core" that is another metal genre is just a subgenre of one of those three ex. Deathgrind, goregrind, mathcore. Hardcore is not metal tho and not any other core
Dimebag Dio I’m not an elitist and like most if not all the core subgenres but I can get with that
I totally forgot about Vader until this video. Thanks for reminding me!
that low growls are brutal man! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Where's Alex terrible?? Hahha
Alex is a fucking demon, the problem is that it is very new compared to the other singers

Travis Ryan. That man’s far too low on this list.
Honestly I'd put him pretty close to 1st. That dude has made some gnarly noises.
Right?? The man’s a fucking monster
He deserves first
Yep.
Lord worm is to low also he deserves top 10
This is a pretty solid list. With some exceptions. But still good list. I thought I was gonna see some bands that don’t even growl like Slipknot! LOL!
Good job Loudwire!
This has got to be one of the funniest vids I've seen in a long time.
Nah this is a great checking out of vocalists

CJ from Thy Art? or CJ from Lorna Shore/Signs of the swarm?
Cj mcreeny in #1 on my list
Designated Hessian ahhh the ducking elitist that doesn’t like anything new. Might I ask how this isn’t metal
Designated Hessian my question was how core isn’t metal 🤔
Eh CJ's (from Thy Art) screams are not low enough to be considered gutturals. U have to admit it even if you are the fan of their work
CJ from Signs of the Swarm for sure

Wow, never thought I'd see Peter Tägtgren so high up! For once I have to thank Loudwire for including one of the best allround Metal musicians but also one of the most forgotten.
Antti Bowman from Demilich has the sickest gutturals ever.

Came here looking for Septicflesh on the list. Wasn't disappointed.
So happy to see Travis Ryan is featured, he definitely deserved a spot. Definitely think he should’ve been higher up though
Yeah I feel the particular clip they used also doesn't do him justice. He has insane lows, as well as crazy dynamic range. One of the all-time greats for sure.
@@brayden12345 for sure. Hopefully they do another run after releasing Terrasite, I saw them on the Decibel tour with Dark Funeral but some asshole caused me to not really pay attention that much
My favorite growler is Kyo from Dir En Grey. I love how he'll go from those chest rumbling growls to the unholy shrieks in a split second.
I was going to be upset if Akerfeldt wasn't #1

Why he fucking sucks now. Look up Demilich, Antti Boman is one of the sickest ever if not THE one.

Most of these aren't even guttural. Just growling doesn't mean guttural. Johan Hegg and whonot are great, but guttural is vocalists like Matti Way, Ruben Rosas, Jason Evans, etc.
Wtf are they

What a trip, at first I was really upset for Joe Duplantier not being here, then I got even more upset, yet curious, for corpsegrinder being 5. I then noticed no Jeff Walker which hurted me physically, but then Mikael being place 1 kind of made me forget all the anger and pain. Solid list, even if I don't quite agree with it.
does corpse grinder have a horde tattoo?
lucas struna yes he’s a huge fan of the game

I don’t know her name but the singer of Jinjer is insane! I’m not 100% sure she does gutterals or not but I think she does
Tatiana Shmayluk and yes, she does gutturals and better than most male singers but Loudwire would never put her in this list.
Think she is not known enough to Loudwire standarts
Tomahawks360 idk Jinjer are getting fairly well known now, I would’ve said she’s easily up to loudwirr standards
@@Module79L Are you accusing Livewire of sexism?
Tatiana is a vocal goddess

No, actually the list sucks, most dont use gutturals, only deep growls
Matthew Tuck deserves a spot for sure man, his screaming back in 2006 was godlike
I agree that his vocals are really cool, but I don’t consider them “guttural” like these death growls
Akerfeldt just rules. There’s something to his voice, that everyone else on this list doesn’t have. It’s like someone krankes the Treble EQ control on his vocal chords

Dave Edwardson from Neurosis and Mike Scheidt from YOB are often overlooked when it comes to gutturals, would love to see more recognition for them.
Travis Ryan is the best metal vocalist period. He's mastered every varience of the scream from super low to super high and even has added his own flair of "clean" to vocals with their latest album. The dudes crazy talented to be able to hit so many different types of screams and do it night after night after night live and somehow his voice gets better with each new cd

Will Rahmer and John McEntee are two people I'd expect to see on a list like this, particularly if you prioritize low, guttural growling. Will's growls are so deep that sometimes you can't even hear his voice at the live shows, almost like he's gone beyond the human range of hearing.
Where the hell is Alex Shikolay of Slaugher to Prevail?!
