How I learnt the Muscle Up in 3 Months. Age 55 Years.

- Learn to Muscle-Up. This is the ultimate Calisthenics skill. It took me three months of training before I did my first one. I was aged 55. This video is my journey.
Now at the age of 59, I am getting stronger and fitter with age. I am able to perform multiple muscle-ups, and my form is still improving. I wouldn't call them strict muscle-ups, but the kipping of the legs is massively less than in this video. Please join, subscribe and support me in turning the clock backwards.

This is the most practical video I've seen on Muscle Up's. No false optimism. Just do the hard work and you'll get there.
This video was all very real, a complete newbie, with no idea, with really bad beginners form, struggling and persevering until finally he achieved his goal. In the years that followed, he cleans up his form.
LOL Hard work???? Kipping and Swinging = CHEATING ( not accepting the actual hard work required and cutting corners that have detrimental effect on your health and strength )
AKA the CrossFit generation
@@funwithcalisthenicssalute 🫡 to you, man.
@@VelhaGuardaTricolorok show us your videos then. You have a link to it?
@@CryptoWolf1 what me having videos or not has any baring on what I've said? Kipping is a crime against your body and fitness. It is not so hard to understand it either. If you know anything about physiology and anatomy it is as straightforward as you can get. What part you don't understand?
I'm only 35, but I gave up trying to do muscle-ups after only 2 months. Thanks for the inspiration, I'm going back to training👍
Pleased to hear it. Don’t quit this time.. think of the good it will do you as you train.. 😊👍
Same, I gave up at 28 years old, it was so frustrating. I think the easiest way would be some kind of personal trainer, who can tell were your weakness is and what body part you have to work on. This video is quite an inspiration for going back to training.
Totally agree, it’s so frustrating. Once you’ve cracked the technique you’ll be laughing. Try watching a video by Adam Frater.. another UA-camr. He has a great tutorial that helped me a lot.
If you start with bent arms it needs zero strength only kip
@@P2541-kz1cuwhere's your video?
I'm 63 and will be 64 in a few days. I just started my journey to accomplish the muscle up. I can do about 15 pull ups, 30 ab rollers and push ups. I went and bought an assist band yesterday and tried this morning. Even my trainer said it was hard, but he did one. So, I'm not going to quit, your video is great and has given me the motivation. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Bernard, great to hear you are able to do the prerequisites of 15 pull-ups. And being 64 in a few days times makes it even more special. You sound like you are in great shape. Buying the resistance bands gets you used to the feeling of flying upwards over bar. If you can crack the technique, ie , the swing, when to pull, etc, you’ve got this.. when you pull, pull as hard as you can and drive the knees upwards the bar at the same time. It will be a kipping muscle up, but they all count. Receiving comments like yours inspire me to want to make another video. The one you watched i made three years ago. I’ve improved a lot since then. Let me know how you get on.. excited for you.
I'm probably late but, happy birthday!!
Hahah thanks.. on the 27th so you are early! 👍
Learn to do it strict first not with kip motion, I'm 53 and learned at crossfit, I can do ring or bar muscle ups in sets
I’m trying ..
Just found this. Subscribed immediately. No gimmick, no talking to cam. Just the process. ❤love this
That’s my style. Thanks so much for subscribing. More videos to come.
Thanks for your well done video. I'm 78 (female) and worked for months to do my first unassisted pull-up. Sometimes, I can do three, so my new goal is five. I've seen several young women at the gym doing pull-ups; love it.
That’s brilliant, especially when you think most women of any age can’t do one. Big congrats to you. Keep going!
I'm very inspired by your journey. I'm a woman and recently got my first pullup after training for 6 months. I think the muscle up will be my 5 year goal. Thank you for sharing this
Hi Susan, I’m pleased you feel inspired. It always surprises me how far I have come, and what is possible if you really apply ourselves. I have made another video… uploaded it yesterday showing more progress. ua-cam.com/video/P7NdZNGmO6c/v-deo.htmlsi=q_FMSptXQb5H9Xsu
What you’ve achieved after 6 months of training is brilliant. Most people would have given up. You should be really proud, well done!
Very inspiring video. Congrats and thank you. I'm 62 and just did 17 pull-ups. I had open heart surgery 17 months ago. I hadn't considered trying to do a muscle-up. 🤔 This is now a goal of mine! ... along with 20 pull-ups.
You sound like you are in incredible shape! 17 pull-ups at any age means you are strong enough to pass the UK Army Marine Pull-Up test. Well done, and after heart surgery is amazing. Build up slowly… I’m marking a video today that I’ll upload at the end of next week.. hopefully it will help you get the muscle up.
Were you able to muscle up?
@tapelkidd yes at the end of the video, I get my first one.
Ur no WannaB. You're the real deal.
Как ваши успехи в спорте?
I am 52, started with calisthenics a year ago. Planning to do my first muscle up by the age of 55 too. Your example is inspiring.
I’m pleased you found that video inspiring. It does take time, getting all the technical bits in place, like the swing, when to pull etc.
Good quality pull ups is a great starting point.. I wish you well on your journey. Calisthenics over the last few years has made me so much stronger, and enabled me to do things I couldn’t previously.
me too. same story 🙂
Finally a dad spending his free time on something smart instead of following daily news or conspiracy theories. I hope I'll manage to stay this cool at your age.
Haha, that made me smile.. I do enjoy keeping informed about the crazy world we live in, so guilty of being a news watcher.. haha.. but prefer to do pull-ups any day..
@@funwithcalisthenics 😅 Oh well... At least you have something cool to talk about and not just the usual corona/Ukraine/government crap that most guys your age keep on rambling about. My father in law does Kung Fu and works out as well. So once he's done with his political statements, the rest of the conversation is actually pretty enjoyable. With my dad, it's hard sometimes. I love him and all, but I'm really not motivated on visiting him often cuz I know it'll end up being a 1-2h monologue again where I already know 80% of the content by heart and the other 20% is just news about China, Russia or America. Even when times were more peaceful, he'd always Google out a random war somewhere that he can "keep on getting informed about". Don't get me wrong though. I agree with most of his opinions and I really don't have a high opinion about humanity and the direction this world is going. But as long as you are blessed to be able to lead a decent life on this planet where so many suffer, use that time for something smarter than to just Google how many people are suffering. You're neither helping yourself nor them by doing that. You who did a muscle up at your age surely inspired more people than all the other dads together with their boring government stories.
Robert that was a great read. Being a dad myself with kids, I think you really nailed it. I’m also guilty of many things your dad does. Although in recent years I have probably become a little more approachable, and entertaining I guess. I didn’t visit my dad too often, and my kids don’t visit me that frequently. I think it’s a little to do with the crazy world we live in. Let’s leave it at that. Anyway, personally, I find having a hobby or interest like this really helps me mentally to deal with many things. People often say that about sports. Go easy on your dad, he probably loves you more than you’ll ever know.
@@funwithcalisthenics Don't worry, I don't blame him for anything. I'm actually grateful to have a dad like him cuz he opened my eyes and my mind in many ways. I agree with him in many of his opinions, it just gets annoying when he keeps on talking about the same stuff instead of just realizing that I agree with him, that most people will never agree with him, that this world will still be f*cked up no matter how much we discuss it, and that he could do so much more with his time and energy instead of just watching ex-CIA agents talking about America's undercover plans and stuff like that. I'd love to go with him to the streetworkout park or just play a video game in coop mode. But he kinda stopped doing anything else than "keeping himself informed" and that's the biggest dad-move of them all and that's what makes me frustrated. Like you said, having hobbies helps a lot. The world doesn't really offer much positivity by default. So if you forget how to behave like a little kid and create your own childish positivity, you're pretty much stranded. That's why I don't mind still allowing myself to get excited about muscle ups, bike rides, video games, playing the guitar and stuff like that. I know that all-in-all it's just a bunch of stupid and meaningless activities, but at least it has a positive effect on me. My dad is a pretty intelligent person and thus suffers from the biggest demise of such people - he can't stop behaving less intelligent and can't allow himself to have some simpleminded fun. 😅
The world doesn’t offer much positivity by default… that’s deep. But probably quite true. Thought provoking statement!
Hey brother..a little late but I just came across this vid...congrats to you on your consistency, perseverance, and work ethic..obviously pays off!...having just hit my first muscle up at age 58 I can empathize with the struggle😉...but the feeling of hitting that first one made it all worth it for sure !! That’s a great goal to have. Using the bands really helped me. Good luck!

Step back and I'll be grinding the movement again with the band. Don't stop lads, we will get it

Awesome progress! Much respect. - That structure looks kind of fragile, watch out you don't muscle-up into the neighbors garden.
Hahaha it is a bit bobbly. And really close to the neighbour. While using my resistance bands, I was wearing slides on my feet and they got caught in the bands and ended up flying over the fence!
Ночью вы перепрыгнули через забор и тайно извлекли тапочки из участка соседа.
Wow This is so inspirational! I’m loving it
You are a great inspiration! I will be 60 this year and my goal is to achieve a muscle-up. I started 10 months ago with 2 bands totalling 80kg and have gradually progressed to a single medium band of 25kg where i seem to have stagnated. How long did it take you and did you encounter any sticking points or was it smooth and steady progress all the way? Many thanks again for sharing your journey!
Hiya, thanks for commenting. Firstly, the progress you’ve made from 80kg in bands to 25kg is seriously impressive. I don’t think there are many 60 year olds that could claim that! It seemed like an I possible task for me, and although it was progressing and I was single minded it wasn’t easy. What you don’t see in my video, is that during the three months it took me, I also managed to lose about 1/2 stone in weight while working hard on my pull-ups. Immediately after completing this video I picked up a shoulder injury so I couldn’t progress and clean up the form. Know I have a minor elbow ache, hopefully I’ll be getting back to muscle-ups again soon.
My recommendation is to watch loads of videos on the technique, and visualise performing it.
Think .. explosive pull downs like you are slamming the hood of your car and pulling your knees up (kipping) at the same time. And come around the bar, in a curve.. whilst working hard on building your pull-up max. How many can you do?
@@funwithcalisthenics
Thanks for the quick response! Yes, i have watched dozens of youtube videos and i know the theory behind a successful muscle-up, just seem to lack the explosive strength needed. I can do 12-14 pull-ups, probably 12 clean and at least 15 straight bar dips. Am now practicing chest-to-bar pull-ups to improve on explosiveness but it's a really slow process and i haven't seen any progress since reaching 25kg band around 2 months ago :(
@@surefire888 you got your first muscle ups?
Hi Alex, oh yes! It took a while, but now I’ve unlocked it. Can do them on the bar, and on the gym rings too. How are you getting on?
