Japan's the same way outside of Tokyo. If we didn't travel with someone who was married to a Japanese woman we wouldn't have gotten into some of the clubs and bars. Sometimes we'd go off locally by ourselves and weren't even allowed to eat at restaurants. People romanticize Japan a lot.

My Indian-English friend who was born and schooled in Britain goes to see his relatives in India for special events. On India independence day, he has to pretend to be American whilst walking around because gang of violent guys go around harassing foreigners trying to find British to beat up and it's completely tolerated by the police, so you have to be extremely careful.
