    I enjoy my gel plates, I play around with simple cheap acrylic paint, a few stencils add some fun shapes and I’ve made a few pretty papers. But when I see your process, your knowledge of bringing forth textures and shapes, and the amazing pieces that result, I realize the same gel plate is a fine art tool in your hands, and a mere toy in mine. Thank you for an excellent tutorial!

    Thanks for the video. I really love your tutorials showing techniques where you make a reusable plate image. That makes a lot more sense to me than just painting on a gel plate & pulling a print (as I always wonder when I see that- why not just paint on the paper)? This gives me ideas of some truly valuable uses of a gel plate, not only as a painting tool, but for limited edition printing with variations, by means of reusable drawing plates. Great ideas.

    Also...If you haven't experienced this, you are going to love this one. If you embrace wrinkles...cover your gel plate with a semi-thick layer of your favorite paints. Place parchment paper (baking tray liner paper) on top, give a nice quick all-over rub and remove it after only about a minute. (Any more and more of the paint will remain on the plate instead of the paper.)
    Then, keep the dried parchment for projects where you need instant grunge. Instant texture. Instant interest.
    You just place the parchment, dried paint-side down, onto the gel plate where you want the texture (which resembles tree bark) and rub the back of the parchment with a credit card or other stiff card or detailing tool, for thin marks.
    You will be amazed at the way it transfers! Do be careful not to let the paper touch the plate in spots you do not desire the texture, or some paint will peel off without even rubbing.
    I tell you, the grunge-factor is a gel printers dream!
    I have tried it with wax paper, but it doesn't release onto the plate like the parchment paper will.
    Plastic wrap and plastic packaging will also release dried paint onto the plate with rubbing, but will not give you a tree bark texture, as it is the characteristic of parchment to crinkle just that certain way when it is saturated with wet paint, and transfers those striations to the plate.
    I have cut the parchment paper into shapes if I want a lot of control over where the dried paint winds up...but I am not usually that concerned about precision in my grungy monoprints.

    I saw the new banner graphic and link to the Website, so figured you were about to post a new episode. But then I got sucked into videos on politics and upcoming elections here in the US, while I was waiting, and missed the exact moment when you posted. Very Nice Website, BTW! So glad to see it. You should list it up there in the description box, along with the donation link! So cool to see more of your work, in addition to the pieces from your video episodes!
    I'm really glad to see you returning to this use of the collagraph idea. As usual, you've put quite the individual spin on the technique, and the results are beautiful. I really loved the tree trunks. There's something about the crinkled textures on the trunks that sometimes looks like a tangled thicket, as much as like bark. My eye finds that texture particularly enticing to wander and explore. But then, when you printed the mountains, I loved them even more--especially when you added the embossed marks. It's excellent how the character of the embossed lines works so well with the more-linear parts of the texture, in the crinkled areas. I would never have predicted that those would sit so nicely together in the same area of the image.

    If I want a uniform surface of paint, without brush strokes from applying with a paintbrush, I enjoy using wedged-shaped make-up sponges you can get at your discount stores or any store, practically, for applying spot-color to my plate.
    I can achieve anything from a single faint layer to completely opaque just by dabbing on two to three layers in total.
    One edge of the sponge is thin for small areas, one thick for larger areas and the corners of the thin edge are great for painting details. Once the paint on the sponge is dried, I snip off the hardened part with scissors and can keep using it until there are no spongy parts left. It lasts quite a while that way, as it is not as absorbent as a regular foam brush. (You can wash the sponge out before the paint dries, but in the world of Gel Plate Printing...time is usually of the essence...so maybe just keep a cup of water to store it until you can wash it.)

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  Рік тому +1

      Fantastic tips here Liz, I reckon you should come and do a guest appearance on a video!!! Thanks loads for all that detail. I tried sponging paint on with a stencil just the other day, worked great and you can vary the texture quite a lot more than I expected...

    Thanks for another great idea exploration! The results are so cool. I have made some nice tree bark effects using some of your other techniques, such as masking tape, ballpoint, and China pencils. I've also pasted on torn bits of magazine, hoping some of the words would transfer. That didn't happen, but the bark effect still looked good. If I can get the hang of text transfer, I might have better luck making bark with words hiding it. I really love this new wrinkle technique, and I imagine if you pasted on wrinkly magazine pages instead of tissue, you might get some words on the first pull. Anyway, fabulous video, as always. Thank you!

    These turned out great. A quicker way to create the collagraph would be to use Matt board. You cut into the board and peel away layers which immediately creates texture. You can also emboss it with biro and stick on tissue. If you coat the entire plate with gel medium you can reuse it infinitely.

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  Рік тому +4

      Hi there, I've used matt board a fair bit in the ways you've described and seems to work great. If you have a press, it's fun to run a piece through dry with string on it which then embosses it as a start point. Cheers for sharing, I'm sure other viewers really appreciate the technical comments : ) As well as me, obviously!!!!!

    Cling film/plastic and paper bags bags work well for this technique too and as they tend to move around each print will always be different. Bx

      hi bixxy, have tried cling film, was fun. I love transferring folded paper and collagraph so it's a lovely suggestion to try paper bags : )cheers!
