- First, sorry for referring to a 'baren' as a 'brayer'!!! Beyond this mishap, in this video I'm exploring portraiture through charcoal drawing transfer on the gel plate. Mixing with textural techniques picked up from Sally Hirst and some collage techniques too.

Putting mono-printing, painting, collage and charcoal portraits together in one work offers me the opportunity to use many of my favorite media all at once! Such a beautiful and well done lesson. I always want to run off and go do every single thing you've just shown us. Thank you. And again more thanks.
Thanks for the encouraging message, I'm glad the techniques will be useful to you : )
👏👏👏👏👏 an excellent tutorial in charcoal transfers with distressed paint enbellishment. Love the results. As always, your work goes above and beyond the norm. Thank you!
Your content reinvigorates my interest in art. Loving the experimental spirit. Really motivating to know there's so many ways to make images as well as countless ways to mix and match styles and techniques.
Sally Hirst is the collage artist you mentioned. I’ve done one of her basic online courses into gel print tips- recommended..
Hey Isabel 🌹🥀 🌹
Marry Christmas 🌹
How are you doing??
@@Kuchsmith1Merry, not marry. Unless she's your soon-to-be wife! 😂❤🎉
@@DrummerGrrrl whole are you
What great techniques here, totally enjoyed every minute. Thanks!
Need more videos, please!!!! Miss you!!!!
Hello, Mr. Al Gorithm. I enjoyed this video, and would like to see more. Thanks.
Too good! appreciated : )
So creative. I it is amazing how much information is in each and every one of your videos
Love your approach, always thinking about composition and problem solving but most importantly enjoying the journey. Great motivation to just try and see what happens
It is so motivating to watch you drawing and then giving the portraits an interesting context, the Bacon portraits really blew my mind. Believe it or not, I was just going to film tracing a picture from a print, but with a painting by Otto Mueller. I hope you don’t mind me doing that. I learned so much from you, and that I feel so confident of doing this UA-cam thing is also greatly owed to you…if that is even a correct English sentence…cheers from Berlin!
Du bist so unglaublich gut - und weit und breit der Einzige, der die ganzen Techniken wirklich frei, kreativ und mit eigner Handschrift verwendet. Einfach großartig! Danke
Danke für die aufmunternden Worte : )
So many great ideas!!! Can't wait to play more with my gel plates. THANKS!!!!
Oh by the way, I subscribed because you always get to the point FAST! Then I can get to play FAST! Thanks!!!
I’m fairly new to gelli plates and purchased it specifically to transfer some of my photos and add papers and textures. Your lessons are helping to teach me the techniques of how to create my vision. THANK YOU
A pleasure - thanks for thanks : )
Thanks Mark for yet another inspiration packed video! Looking forward to part 2 where you explore landscapes (even though this video contains so many ideas that could keep me busy for months or longer). My favorite image is the red one with the blue circle overlay.
This is fabulous! I'm so over trying to get successful transfers of family photos so the charcoal and chalk pastels feel like the keys to the kingdom! 🙏👌
Don't know how YT didn't notify me of this video 😢.
But wow. You are the scientist or should I say the alchemist of gel printing! Amazing!
Really kind message, thanks so much
I love 'Prussion Blue' and I love you.
hurrah another excellent video by Mark thanks as always so inspiring, so many ideas packed in to such a short video as always
I wait for and wish for your videos each week. Love your skills and I feel like I learn so much. Thank you.
I wish I could manage one a week!!!
Excellente vidéo, aussi bien au niveau des fonds que des transferts au charbon de bois : merci mille fois ! et merci pour la dernière idée à partir d'une photo : je ne sais pas dessiner, mais là, je sens que je vais faire des progrès !
Brilliant! 💫
So great to see new processes ,thank you.

Great new techniques.
This was so inspiring...have to try it out right away! Thank you!
Thanks so much this great. I want to make a serie of portraits of wonderful women and was looking for the right techniques...I'm definitely trying this out😊
So glad it helped 😀 good luck with your portrait series
Great episode
Yay!! You're back. I love the end of term.
Thanks for the suggestion about the baby oil and wet wipe helping with the charcoal residue! I had the idea to transfer a charcoal drawing several months back and was very frustrated that it stuck on my gel plate for a long long time...was worried that I'd ruined the plate! I'll have to try again!
: ) Can't remember where I picked up that tip, but I was similarly relieved when I did!!!!!
Fascinating! I learn so much by watching your videos,
Fabulous. Thanks! And yes, Sally Hirst is phenomenal.
Not many words needed to describe your drawing talents😱… phenomenal🤩… makes all the difference when using on the gel plate🤩.. thx
Great tutorial thanks! I’m going to try this method!
great post! really like the atomized water effect
Absolutely love these images ! You never fail to amaze and inspire!
Your charcoal sketching is amazing!
So fresh and spontaneous technique in portraitures. Glad your back with videos!
I get so excited whenever I see that you’ve uploaded a new video to your channel.
I love your unique talent. Can't wait to see where you go with landscapes.
Thanks for this. It’s really inspired me to incorporate drawing into painting and printing by combining these processes.
Vos vidéos sont trop addictives! J'aime plus plus plus ...
Thanks another amazing video
: ) thanks, very kind
You are a true source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing your research with us.
Another inspiring video - Thankyou so much for sharing! Looking forward to your landscapes 😊

Wishing you a festive happy season ❤
Fabulous video once again… would love to try this technique in a life drawing session
Thankyou ! Love these techniques .I am finding the process very interesting in my early experience with Gel plates . Your Charcoal drawings are wonderful 😊
Great work Mark and such interesting texture. Great to see your work.💖💖💖🇦🇺🎄
Oh yes!!! Thank you 😊
Thanks for another brilliant video, lots of techniques to follow up on. I'm a huge fan of Sally Hirst too 😊
Thanks for another fabulous demo Mark. I’m going into my studio now to play with these ideas right now 😊😊😊
Glad to see you on😊 as always I love your art such great graphic style I love the contrast in texture thanks so much for sharing ❤
Watching your videos, I have learned so much about gel prints. In addition to being an artist, you are a good teacher. I said that in my new video on gel prints on a quilted wall hanging.
Sooo cool. Your portraits are amazing and so inspiring. Love the second round gel plate image pressed into the first. Look forward ro trying this.
Superbe démonstration avec un réel talent de dessinateur, bravo!!!❤
Always a pleasure and always an inspiration. 💕
: ) thanks susan
Great job, thank you!
A pleasure, thanks for thanks! : )
MERCI ET ENCORS BRAVOOOOOOO
Thank you for the new video! Am always inspired by your investigations. I love to see the cross pollination of ideas and techniques from the Gel Printers Summit!
Thanks, glad vid is useful to you. I haven't even got through all those contributions to GPS yet! Sally's alone was enough to keep me busy for a while!
I really love the textures you're using with these, and the ways the acrylic marks blend and contrast with the charcoal and pastel marks. It's as though there's a whole new hybrid medium at work here. The spray technique and the subtractive masking tape technique are lovely. Gorgeous, rich results!
Also appreciate the tip about drawing loosely over a faint print. Opens up a large number of possibilities! Thanks!
So interesting where your exploring has led you. Love the idea of distressed layers on the plate before transferring the drawing. Really like removing some of the paint with tape. Cool idea. I have been playing with the Golden high flow acrylics on my Gelli plate. They give a similar effect as adding water but dry much quicker, which is good for me as I’m super impatient . 😊 I’m going to have a play with some landscapes tomorrow. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I've enjoyed very much your demonstrations of various techniques using gel plates. Thank you! I liked how you showed the combination of collage on paper and using textured items as stamps to both remove from and add paint to the plate. I liked that you smudged the charcoal drawing slightly and want to try that.
I have some *very old* charcoal drawings that I might use for fun.
You are so inspiring with the gel plate! Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing and for the advice on drawing. I have zero skills for drawing and really want to learn.
Yay! I had been waiting for a new tutorial with bated breath.
Mark,I squealed out loud when you pulled the first print! (Scared my cat) Just so interesting and exciting. I love your experimenting with Sally Hirst’s techniques. The video is just loaded with demo’s. As always thank you for sharing your work. Wishing you Happy Holidays🎄
Hey Mark, I recently bought a bundle of past issues of the amazing Canadian art magazine "Uppercase." They are so inspiring! Last night when reading issue 56 on the theme "sounds creative," I saw your lino cut of Howlin' Wolf! Great to see your work in print. I've seen a few of your art works of musicians now, so it's perfect that you were in that issue! I always enjoy your art, and watching your process! You have so many cool ideas.
Wow…. Very inspirational stuff!! I really appreciate the tips on drawing over a printout to build confidence with tones.
Glad it was useful : ) cheers peggy
The more and more i see jelly plate works I love and hope to try ,the options are endless.
Absolutely amazing! I have been waiting to see what you have been up to. Happy New Year to you and your family!
Mr. Al Gorithm j’adore ces vidéos
Back again ❤ 👍 👌
❤
Oh i thought it was either Marlin Brando or Carl Sagan. YOU ROCK!
Thanks for sharing I love everything you do. Have you written a class for gel printing I think it would be a great class
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
❤🎉😮😊
All your videos are inspiring and informative and this one no different!Wow!Love the added collage,I’m really into that and can’t wait to have a go!Think the waiting for the water to dry is going to be a challenge lol!I know some people use hairdryers…what’s your thoughts on that please?Keep up your amazing art Mark!…Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your Family🎅🏻
I bought a little battery operated fan from Amazon a while back. I use that to dry things without heat. I'm going to try that with this technique as I can't wait for things to dry naturally, lol.
@@CyndiDuncanArtsGreat tip..never tried the hairdryer even on low setting! Will have a look on Amazon..Thankyou 👍🏻
Have you ever tried using pigment powders on your gel plate? I love using them. You can get some really cool shapes and textures and some powders have special effects. I think you’d like playing with them.
Been meaning to get some but I looked at pan pastels and they were so pricey!
Thanks for your video series. You are a mine of useful ideas. i have a 16 x 20 gel plate for A2 sized work but would like to go up a size so I can make A1 sized posters. Do you know if anyone makes a bigger plate?
Is it just water you use in the spray bottle? … I love to start playing with my gelatin plate again…it’s been so long time since I’ve used and have energy to be creative…so back to watching my favorite artist and then just hoping for more good vibes to get started again…BIG digital hug from Laila your biggest fan in Norway ❤…
Have enjoyed seeing this series of videos and how you have developed these transfer techniques.
I’ve forgotten if you mentioned the type of paper you use for the charcoal drawings. In particular, is it smooth paper or not?
Thanks?
Missing you and your wonderful videos - hope you’re OK…..? Please come back soon
All good, just busy with work and life : )
I’ve been loving watching your process. Did you know that you can get the same “chemical” reaction by using Golden High Flow acrylics instead of waiting for the water drops to dry?
Does anyone know if this technique works with aqua/intaglio inks, or oil-based printing inks like caligo safewash? I've been doing linocuts for a few years but would love to try this too-- just don't have a lot of acrylic paint lying around. I already bought the gelli plate :)
Such powerful results! You have opened up so many possibilities. In the other videos where you use the Amsterdam Black, are you using OXIDE Black or LAMP Black? Thank you !
Lamp black😀 glad the vid was useful to you
Lamp black😀
Hi! I was looking for a rubber transparent board in my local but it's very expensive but as alternative i found the PVC transparent table cover, do you think it would do the same job? And it's thick 3mm, thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
The Francis Bacon drawing reminds me of the American author Gore Vadil.
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing. What size is that plate? And you mentioned Gel elf(?) plate? Can you share the name manufacturer of the plate? Really appreciate your approach to creating prints.
Question for you; what charcoal products work best for this? If you had $60 US to spend on charcoal, what would you look for? Beyond that, any advice on pastels?
Awesome works..im new to gelli printing,im still working on using charcoal transfer ,inkjet prints to get images to show on my plate, may i ask what kind of charcoal you using..
Keep at it, once you’ve mastered a couple of key transfer techniques and found what paints and processes suit you the world is your oyster 😀
Hi, love your work. Can you tell me what brand of geli plate you use? Thanks :)
I use Gelli arts and Gelelf plates 😀
How does graphite or conte work with the gel plate?...or have you tried them?
Do you find the charcoal and pastels tend to smudge once it is pulled? If so, do you put a fixative on it? Talking about the print, final product.
Not at all. That, and the fact you can reuse the charcoal drawing for further prints is such as bonus
