    Just smashed me thumb trying to separate the backing plate from the hub. Should have watched this first, great tip!

      Yea they are a pig to separate, the Haynes manual says to use a hammer but it just doesn't work for cars with rust. Bolt works best.

    Changing the rear passenger hub and CV axle on the '05 highlander 4 cyl and lost today's battle trying to remove the CV from the transmission, as well as a fused backing plate to the hub. This video hasn't gotten a lot of views yet, but it is given me hope that tomorrow I'll beat the hub issue. Thank you, stranger friend.

    My backing/emergency brake mounting are rusted to beat the band and this is the only video I found for doing this on a Toyota.

    Thank you so much for this. I'll be trying it tomorrow on my Camry. I thought I was going to need to take it to a shop to have it removed or spend $100-200 for new backing plates. I'll let you know how it works.

    • @davidbowsher879
      @davidbowsher879 Рік тому +2

      It worked. I chose bolts that were too long and they got bent, so I had to go get shorter bolts. 4 inches is just about right. Thank you thank you thank you. I was going to have to spend $800 for new backing plates or $600 for a local shop to get them out with their hydraulic press. $10 worth of bolts and nuts and I'll be working on reassembly tomorrow.

    Well, shucks…makes my 4” stone chisel and lump hammer look primitive, and you don’t make a chisel-shaped dent in the edge of the bearing hub flange either. I have concluded, that 10 years of rust, is as good as a silver-soldered joint (just a step below brazing). Good job.

    The easiest way to stop the bolt from gouging the backing plate real bad would be to spin the nut instead. It still left a small dent but not nearly so bad.

    How did you get the hub back to the bearing? it would be perfect if you include this step in the video.

    • @orbitaaltube
      @orbitaaltube  11 місяців тому +1

      In this case the hub and bearing are integrated as this is the rear of the vehicle. I think it is possible to replace the bearing on its own but most people opt to replace the entire hub as it's not much more expensive than the bearing on its own.

    • @marchingband7828
      @marchingband7828 11 місяців тому

      @@orbitaaltube In your case in the video I saw you still used the old hub, did you hammer it back in? Did you use a steel cover to protect it from damaging? I can't imagine other ways to put it back in other than hammering. Thanks

    • @orbitaaltube
      @orbitaaltube  11 місяців тому +1

      It's just a bolt on part once the backing plate is separated from the hub/bearing assembly. When reassembling once you put the four bolts in at the back it will tighten it all back up again.

      @SE45CX your replacing the bearing not the backing plate so it doesn't matter to use the old bearing for leverage .
      Why would you care about taking off the backing plate if you are not going to change the 110$ bearing ?

    Easier said than done, but for a cheap crappy quality built backing plate from day one. I say just repair it adding sheet metal, by either riveting on or gluing ,make aa template from the exact one, ,cut some ventilation slots as before. primer , undercoat and you just saved $300.00 on parts ,and a headache ,from removing a perfectly good hub bearing assembly.

    • @orbitaaltube
      @orbitaaltube  2 роки тому +3

      They are 40bucks a piece aftermarket for this vehicle. These backing plates are also not just sheet metal as they are structural to support the brake carrier and the steel is thicker in places because of that.

      You could rotate the flange 180 deg. then 90 deg. every few turns and that would draw the hub off evenly.

    Why are backplates that hard to remove? Will the new one be hard to put in place?

    • @orbitaaltube
      @orbitaaltube  9 місяців тому +1

      It's all because of the rust here in Ireland. The new one is easy to put on because when you tighten up the bolts that hold the rear hub on it compresses it back in place.
