In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat Mangosteen. Also, have you ever wondered what does Mangosteen taste like? I will describe what it tastes like to me, tell you where they come from and where they grow as well as give you a few health benefits for this amazing fruit.
Where does Mangosteen come from?
The Mangosteen is native to the islands around the Indian Ocean. It is cultivated in Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Borneo, Philippines, Southwest India, in the west in Columbia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Florida, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, to name a few places. If it is tropical, these will probably be able to be grown there.
Dubbed the "Queen of Fruit" they are eaten fresh, put in salads, and desserts.
What are the health benefits?
They are packed with nutrition and high in antioxidants, moderate amounts of several essential vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin C, B9, B1, B2, Manganese, Copper. They contain a decent amount of fiber. Support blood sugar control, promote a healthy immune system.
What does the mangosteen taste like?
Taste is definitely subjective, but to me, they taste kind of like a mix between a strawberry, pineapple, lychee, and peach. Slightly tart with an explosion of sweetness. They are extremely juicy.

Don't throw away the skin it's very nutritious too. The dried skin is used in daily cooking instead of tamarind in western costal part of state of Maharashtra. It's called as Kokum in local Marathi language there. We also make a drink called as sharbat specially for summer it's called kokum sharbat
Nice!
How do i prep it? Got a suggested recipe? Thanks!
Yes man it's awesome
I live in Thailand and mangosteen are in season right now. The parents of twins in my class have a farm and they invited the families of all the classmates to go pick fruit today (mangosteen and rambutan). Wow! They sent me home with a huge bag of them (it must have weighed about 5-6 kilograms: ~12 lbs). I gave away about one-third of them to my neighbours and kept the rest. They're SOOOO good. They're abundant here right now and are priced at about $1.30 USD per kilogram (59 cents per pound).
WOW! That is such a good price!! Lucky! haha
I’m in Alaska and Costco has them for 12.99 there is 9 in the package. 💜💜🦋. They are yummy and such good health properties .!
Awesome that you found them in Alaska! So delicious!
I grew up in the Philippines and this mangosteen is something we just pick from the trees on our way to school and eat like picking apples. Just so happened that yesterday we bought some at the Asian store in Naperville, Illinois. Brings back memories.
That is awesome, Cecilia! I lived in the Philippines for a couple of years back in the late 90s. I loved the fresh tropical fruit there! It is so much more expensive here in the States.
Yasss i see them at super h mart here in niles
When I was little I used to climb mangosteen trees while reading textbooks, there are two varieties that I know, one of which has up to 9 segments on the fruit and we call it forest mangosteen.
Awesome!
I love mangosteen! I used to eat this in the philippines. It was a local fruit so we would get a small box because it sells out so fast. Definitely my favorite. So good! thanks for sharing information to people so making them more aware of it!
That is awesome, Kim!! :) :) And you are very welcome!
Thanks for the explanation! I just tried them today for the first time, truly delicious. They cost 60THB a kilo here in Bangkok from street food vendors (roughly 1,73 USD). One of my favourite fruits now to be added to the Rambutan, Lychees and Passion fruit.
You are welcome!! That is a great price for them, like seriously amazing price. They are so so expensive here. I love Rambutan, Lychees, and Passion Fruit, I have videos for all of those as well.
We just tried them for the first time on Kauai, having bought them from a local grower at a small farmer's market. I believe they were $4 each. Delicious. Maybe the purple exterior influenced my perception of the taste, but I thought it was most like an intense plum flavor.
Awesome Deb! Glad you got to try them!!
I’m definitely going to try to find this near me now! And the updated (new?) kitchen looks great!
Thanks so much, Brett!
They are something I have never seen but they look tasty. Thanks for sharing
You are welcome!
Mangosteen is a queen of fruit as you have said. In Thailand, the price is incredibly inexpensive around 1.5 us dollars for a kilo! .... nice video....
That is so cheap there!! So expensive here in the States. Such a yummy fruit!
The first I had mangosteen, I fell in love with it!😍
Mangosteen is one of the most expensive fruit in the Philippines, on my opinion. But I think it is worth it because the fruit taste really good & gives you lots of vitamins as well ☺️
So yummy! One of my favorites for sure. Super expensive here in the United States as well.
OMgosh! As a professional cook of over 30 years I'm always looking to try new things. Your description of the taste is spot on. Yes, incredibly expensive, but when you can, absolutely try them. I like to add the segments to a spinach salad. Not baby spinach, but the large curly leaf, dark green spinach, with a fig and kumquat vinaigrette. Sooo good!!!!
Such an amazing fruit!! Glad you got to try them and liked them!
Good way of describing the flavors Matt. Today was the first time I had it and it was delicious! Bought it at Sprouts here in Colorado Springs for $2.99 each
Thank you!! So glad you got to try it. I wish they were cheaper here in the States.
Thank you for sharing will try
You are welcome, Sara! :)
Wow - nice, thank you!
You are welcome!
Thanks for the great instructional video!! Just brought some mangosteens home from the market here in Singapore. They were about the equivalent of US $3 per pound but I heard they can get much cheaper. Can't wait to try them tomorrow now that I know how to eat them 😃
Wow you are lucky, that is still very cheap!!! :) And you are very welcome, Sarah! Enjoy! Let me know how you like them.
thank you in the kitchen with 🙏
You are welcome!
I remember these from living in Thailand as a child. Found them at the Asian Market in OKC yesterday for $9 for 20. What a bargain. Mine don't look as fresh as the one you had, but after opening 4 only one had started to bruise. Still tasted great though. I gave 5 to a young couple in the check out line as they had never tried them before.
Wow! That is a great price. Glad you found them. Yeah I actually just bought another batch about a month ago and they weren't quite as good as the ones I showed in this video, but still yummy. It's fun sharing them with people who haven't tried them before.
Yesterday at my local Costco, I happened to see these. I have NEVER heard of them and was intrigued. They were in a mesh plastic bag, so the quantity was good. I cannot find my receipt at the moment and will edit this as soon as possible. Also, I don't remember looking at a sign with the price. I googled how to eat them and found you! THANK YOU! They are AMAZING!! Cannot wait to head back and purchase more.
That is so awesome!! And lucky you found them at Costco, probably much cheaper then what I pay/paid for them. So good right???
@@inthekitchenwithmatt they are incredible. And you're spot on with the description of what their taste is like. Fantastic video. I would have never figured out how to open it. 😵💫
@@sherrywoodbeck3542 Thank you!! :) :) Seriously one of the best if not the best tasting fruits I have ever experienced.
I had one in Australia. I remember it tasting like a vanilla custard inside. I was in north Australia, staying at a bed and breakfast.
Glad you tried one!
In Chennai, India it's 320 INR per kg.
Nice!
Super yum. Thanks for telling us how to eat it. It costs $0.5, each in Bengaluru, India
You are very welcome! That is a great price!!
I LOVE THIS VIDEO
Thank you so much! :)
I’ve noticed that if you take the little flower pedals off of the top of the fruit but leave the stem on it it kind of looks like a bomb 💣 haha
hahaha yes it does!
Wow awesome video btw
Thank you!
In Bangalore, India I asked the price. The seller said ₹450per kg. Since i didn't know about it. I browsed and got your video. Tomorrow I'll buy and try!
Awesome! Let me know what you think about it once you try it.
We have a mangosteen plant at the backyard of our house. It is about fifteen years old. It didn't bear any fruit for about twelve years. Then two years back there was a single fruit. Last year 2-3 fruits and now just about ten to fifteen. They are not yet ripen fully. Some of them are two and a half inches in diameter and started getting yellowish in colour. When can I harvest them? I have not yet tasted this fruit so far. NB: Your video is really good and informative. Thanks a lot.
That is cool you have a mangosteen tree in your backyard! Harvest them when they are purple like in the video.
It's mangosteen season in the Philippines right now. You can easily purchase USD1 for a kilo right now!
Awesome and that is super cheap!!
We are in North Port Florida, just got some from a local store in Venice $9,99/ lb
Glad you found some to try!
I purchase them for $7.99 lbs at the Asian market in Baton Rouge Louisiana. They are absolutely an amazing fruit.
Wow that is a great price!! Much cheaper than what I have seen them for here in Phoenix. Such an amazing fruit!
I saw them in the 99Ranch Market, looked weird so I bought fresh lychees and fresh logans instead. We have loquat trees in our backyard and 5 pomegranate trees (changes from sour to sweet year to year). Do you enjoy Cherimoya? Cherimoyas are extremely sweet. Are you in Florida?
Lychees and Longans are awesome, I have done videos on those, as well as pomegranate and yes of course, Cherimoya. :) No, I live in Arizona. :)
Can also be grown in Texas! Just need protection during the cold and extra water in the heat.
Yes lots of tropical fruits can be grown in Texas! :)
They also somewhat of a custard taste. But as you say incredible
Incredible indeed!
0.3 $ per fruit in Indonesia, maybe less.
If you live in the village, you can get it for free sometimes.
Villagers love to share :D
That is awesome!! I wish they were that cheap here in the States!
@@inthekitchenwithmatt come here, visit u, Indonesian people will welcome you.
Too many monoculture here, we need people who willing to make a food forest :D
You can even start a farm here 😆

I love mangosteen where I live mangosteen is not really expensive and it’s my FAVORITE fruit.
Awesome, Maggie! Yeah it is so yummy.
This looks interesting. Very expensive... now I'm interested.
Cool! Yeah definitely try it sometime.
we sill be in Flordia next mo and I wish that I knew where to get them
Try a place called Miami Fruit I know they sell them there.
I'VE HAD A MANGOSTEEN!!!
Awesome!!
yes they are very exptnsive we just paid 36.00 and got small ones and only 8 of them but they are just so good and healthy
Yes they are so amazing. Wish they weren't so expensive!
I work at a church we handle boxes of food and I saw these. I only got two well, I only took two because I didn’t know what they were but I wish I knew I would’ve took more knowing how expensive they are.
Glad you got to try two of them! How did you like them?
Dropping a comment down below because I've had mangosteen
Nice!!
However, the king of fruit is Durian. People may understand there is only one kind of it, but there are many. For example, Mon Tong, Kan Yao are the best and most pricy durian in Thailand. I am surprised when people hate the strong smell of Durian. The answer is they choose the wrong one. ... I would like you to make video how to eat durian due to many do not know how to cut it.
Yep I have a video about Durian as well. Here is my Durian video ua-cam.com/video/1O_9YnHkzl4/v-deo.html
Just got a bag at my h mart they were 6 bucks a pound so good I live for these lychee rambutan and longan! Started eating them when I lived in Japan and Asia in the navy. Now back in maryland US people always ask me what I’m eating haha
Awesome! Yeah I buy then when I see them. I have two International markets right across the street from each other and H Mart is one of them. When I go shopping I usually hit up both haha. Glad you found them in Maryland!
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I miss so many great fruits from when I lived in Asia thank you for your channel too mate
@@UnwrittenSpade Yes! I lived in the Philippines for a couple of years in the late 90's, so many amazing fresh fruits that taste better there, as opposed to the imported storebought ones. And you are so very welcome. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
Bro in Indonesia they threw the white fruit in the bin and Spoon out the Purple Rind of the hard and this is the True Healing Element of this Fruit.
Cheers Robie
Cool, not sure why, the white fruit is amazing.
I just bought some, but they just be more ripe, the skin was like 3/4 inch thick, and rock hard, I had to dig at it with a knife, took me like 3 min to free the very small fruit segments. Nothing like the one you had lol
Yeah it is possible yours were less ripe. How did you like the actual fruit segments?
The four pedals on top of the mangosteen is actually the flower!
Yep that is correct!
Its still $17/lb in Seattle, US, but very good 👍🏾
So expensive, I was at my local H-Mart on Friday and they had them for $14.99/lb. I didn't wind up buying any. Very good indeed! I love this fruit, just wish it was cheaper here in the States.
Check out Gabe Humphries he has a couple mangosteen trees growing in Hawaii!
I will check it out sometime.
theyreally are amazing, here in Estonia they cost 2 EUR 1 tk butits totally worth it
Yes, so amazing. One of my favorite if not my favorite fruits!
I just bought some for 9.99 a pound in Cali where I live
Not a bad price, still expensive but that is not a bad price for this fruit.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt it’s my first time having this fruit as well I bought it from Ranch99 an Asian store
Dollar each in Toronto...we just bought and yet to taste
That is such a great price!! Let me know how you like them after tasting them.
Omg congratulations 🎊🎉🍾🎈 on your new stove 👍👏
Thank you so much, Suzann!! :)
How do you know when they are ripe ? 😊
Good question. For one thing, they do not ripen after they are picked, so hopefully the ones you get are ripe. So the growers to pick them when they are ripe. You will know it is ripe when it feels a bit heavy in your hand for its size, the out peel will be smooth, and purplish red, and it will give a little when pressed with your thumb. If they are unripe they will be super hard.
14.94 in China town Honolulu hawaii
Expensive!
I’ve seen a small mangosteen seedling for $50!
Nice!
I bought few mangosteens to try, but it was too bitter. The outer part was bit soft, but i don't know why it tasted too bitter
mmm it sounds like maybe they weren't right yet. I have never had a bitter one. Each time I have bought them, they have been super sweet.
I eat 12 pieces maggostten now I have diarrhea but anyway I love this fruit
Such a yummy fruit, yeah a lot of fruit is like that, if you eat too much at one time, you can get diarrhea.
I live in the Philippines so we pay USD$3 per kilo... ;)
Nice! I lived in the Philippines for two years, I loved getting fresh exotic fruit for super cheap there!
i will probably never get a chance to use this knowledge you impart. never seen mangosteen.
Maybe someday you will find them. :)
I’ve bought mangosteen before and they were $12 for 6 of them and I cut them all open and a few of them have rotted on the inside because they were too old and I saw them again and they were $14.99 and I didn’t buy them. They are very expensive because the tree grows very slow and takes about 12 or 15 years to fruit from a seedling and many other reasons
Yep, they are super expensive!
I just have my first tissue very nice
Great!
Smash it on the table with your hand will work as well to break the shell if you don't have a sharp knife
Indeed!
What is the texture like? An orange? Peach?
It has its own texture, its hard to describe, not like a peach or an orange maybe if you mixed the textures of those two and a plum that would be a fair description of the texture.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thank you so much!
@@Starbeoghtuser3475 Welcome!
I've never had one, but when you mentioned it tastes a like lychee, I'll pass. I've never had one of those, but thought of trying one does not sound good.
We have someone selling 15 lbs for $99. For that price, I would definitely pass.
these are much tastier than lychee. It doesn't taste like a lychee, only similar in texture. super juicy and sweet, you really should try it, I have never met anyone that didn't like it. 15lbs is way too much, just buy 1/2 a pound or try and buy 2 or 3 of the fruits to try.
I got a bag of 6 for $13 at Costco but they were all rotten 😢
Probably why they were so cheap. :( Sorry that was your first experience with them.
You say scoop it out like this but you cover what you’re doing with your hand.
You just grab the white part and pull it out.
2lbs. $23 bucks
Yeah expensive! But oh so tasty.
phurced
OMG! You don't know how to eat it. You don't need a knife to open it. Don't teach something you don't know.
All you need to do is to remove the stem above and squeeze the top with the lower part of your palm. It will break open instantly.
There is more than one way to do something. Yes, you can open them with your hands with the compression method. This is the most common way here in the West. The farmers in Hawaii that grow them, open it this way. As well as many other people. And don't tell me how and what to teach. If you already know how to eat them, why in the world are you even watching this video? And opening with a knife is a much cleaner method. Just like eating an apple! There is more than ONE way to eat it. Just like many OTHER fruits.
