In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat lychee fruit. What does lychee or lichi taste like? I also do a taste test. I love lychee, I ate them quite a bit several years ago when I lived in the Philippines. They are super easy to eat, and taste amazing. I love showcasing interesting and different fruits here on my channel once in awhile, and lychee definitely fit that description.

I live in Florida and have 2 Lychee trees. I love the taste but the season is very short. During May the fruit is growing and then, all of a sudden there are huge numbers turning bright red and ready for harvest the first week in June. Depending on the part of the tree, the fruit will be ready over the next 10 days or so, and then its over. You have to catch picking them at just the right time - too early and the fruit is a little sharp with big pits - too late and they are over ripe. When you get them just right, they are wonderful. The best ones have shriveled pits with lots of fruit. Over ~ a two week period you go from having an overwhelming amount to none at all. They can be frozen, so that it a good way to extend enjoying this fruit.

Our family had lychee trees on our property in HI. We would look forward to picking them when they were reddish brown and in a large bunch. The biggest bunches tend to be closer to the top of the tree, so a few close calls climbing as kids. As the tree gets old, it gets less fruit until it doesn’t anymore. Other tropical fruit trees we enjoyed were star fruits and mountain-apples. 👍🏽

They can definitely be a little hard to find if your city doesn’t have a significant Chinese community.
That being said, lychees are becoming more and more popular in the US and I’ve seen them crop up in my local Costco (albeit the quality is a little hit-and-miss)

  • @kwanben8000

There are many kinds of Lychees (over 10 kinds). The taste and price difference of different kinds can be huge. You can come to Hong Kong and go to Mongkok market to buy some available kinds to see the differences. Lychee is very cheap in HK.
When you have tasted all kinds of Lychees available in the HK market, you will know why the prices are hugely different. Then you will not buy the cheap one (should learn to recognise the appearances and names of different kinds).
I just read some interesting posts in a Chinese forum these 2 days. People in non-Lychee planting areas are discussing how to distinguish the Lychee types and what the tastes are.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt

Most lychees are ripe when they are pink or reddish. Once picked they won't continue to ripen, so most of the times the lychees you find at the Asian grocery store will all be fairly ripe and ready to eat.

I see so many positive comments but I bought a bunch of these and every one is bitter. They have the color shown and since they don't ripen there is nothing I can do but throw them out. Out of twenty or so, I got one good one. The fruit in the bitter ones don't release from the stone.

Probably just a bad batch. I have eaten so many of these, and haven't ever gotten any bitter ones.
