Famous last words, "It tastes like poison."
Solid recommendation right there! Think I'll mix it with my Jilly Juice and I will be so powerful I can not only regenerate lost limbs but grow extra ones!
Apricot Seed: "Allow me to introduce myself"
That's frightening. We don't know what to believe...eat it ...don't eat it is frustrating...I give up.
“Phytochemicals” just means “chemicals found in plants” (“phyto” is Greek for “plant”). So any fruit or seeds with no phytochemicals would be nonexistent.
You my friend, are the peak of human evolution.
As one etymology fan to another, well done for spotting the buzzword.
If there something you can't find on the market, don't bother even try it.
Yes, but from a medical/chemistry perspective it could be unidentified compounds or at the very least unnamed compounds. We normally think of things in terms of vitamins and minerals, but there are other beneficial organic compounds. Not all of these have names yet or their effects are not understood. Consider turmeric, it is used as a popular dye or seasoning, but has anti-inflammatory properties. The compound responsible has been identified and understood, but there are millions of animal and plant based compounds that are unnamed or un researched.
So in short, phytochemicals can be a buzzword, but in scientific literature it can be a place holder until the compound is further understood.
"If something goes wrong and you get sick don't blame me.
Blame the research you did."
😂
OMG the way you said it tasted like... poison. So funny, spot on comedic timing. Your cat is super cute. I love your vlogs Thank you!
I love your videos. Especially your cat. Your humor makes it easy to watch...keep the videos coming, dude!
@@sharongreen845 -- My cats are scarce during his vids, go figure!
One of them, a very muscular black cat named (of course) "Midnight" will hop up on my desk, park in front of my keyboard, and demand to be played with -- VERY frequently.
I don't think she's _ever_ done that for one of his videos!
Too weird...
Oh, well. At least _I_ enjoy them! Lots of decent info. I just wish there was more focus on "native" flora found in Northern areas such as Michigan.
It's been well over a decade since I've been in a city with an Asian grocery, and the "regular" store in town has slim pickins most of the time. It's about impossible to even find things like "fresh" nuts (in shell) and pomegranate.
Superfoods get a free pass out of actually having 'scientific evidence' for their efficacy. Pshshhhh who needs that. My mom ate an avocado seed and lived to 125, and gained the avocados memories. Are you calling my mom a liar huh!
😂
I would love to have the green memories of an avocado. Sign me up!
"It tastes like poison ☠.......it's not awful" 😂 Your level of enthusiasm for trying this seed in any form is -100,000,000,000,000.1 🤣
People are crazy. If it's the end of the world and I only have an avocado, I guess I'll eat the seed as well as the rind.
Thanks for taking one for the team, and trying this avocado seed. I love your series on seeds.
Thanks! I'll have to do another seed month next year
I have eaten them before and I'd say poison is a good description of the taste. They also gave me the runs so will never eat them again.
😂😂
Was that from high magnesium or like because it's poison?
The seed or the Avocado?
Did you boil it first?
"It tastes like poison"......I laughed so hard I scared the dog. 🤣🤣😆
lol
Read this comment right when he said this and pissed myself.
so many things are superfoods that it's probably easier to list things that are not superfoods
nakrul987 Some “superfoods” are downright unhealthy. Take apricot seeds, they contain enough cyanide to be dangerous to your health, yet people claim they cure cancer (note: Same as most things claimed to cure cancer, they super don’t).
Its crazy to me how many times I've researched a fruit to find out it (or its seed/rind/leaves) is supposed to be the next big miracle cure.
Anything that's labeled as food is super to me lol
@@WeirdExplorerThat's how the people who start these rumors make money. People's health is not their priority or in their interest.
What I brought away from this video: There is too wide a variety of known edible fruits that can give you the same results... go try those instead... they're more palatable!!! Thanks, it was another great video!!! :)
When you blend it and put expose it to air... it changes colors in front of your eyes from a yellowish white to a DEEP red. It’s pretty cool.
really living up to the poison aesthetic
Very honest review! Do you think it would blend better with porridge? I was considering trying that out
It's probably better that way than as a drink. The more you can cover up the flavor the better ha
That’s brilliant!
I’ll give it a try and let you know 😂
You can toast the leaves and use them as a garnish, smells pretty good
Funny, it's like everything that isn't processed and comes out of a box or bag is a "SUPER FOOD" ... >.>
Punky Rooster Even Dirt is a superfood in comparison to processed poison.
It’s almost like people just outright make all of this up 🤔
Well done Jared Rydelek on your overview personal research of the avacado seed.
Today I was research tasting the avacado seed at the very moment I found your video.
I was tasting a small piece of oven dried avacado which I also had cut into small pieces. I also had determined it cuts like a small potato, had a nutty, semi bitter taste. Consistancy like a walnut or chestnut and with high note medicinal flavour of a juniper berry, pine sap or fresh artimisia leaves.
Definitely worthy of learning more about medicinal qualities.
Excellent introduction video.
Thanks for all the sharing of knowledge and experiencing things for us. This part is glorious 5:16-5:20 as others have said. Hilarious, will now think of your delivery whenever eating something on that caliber of yuck for years to come. As always thank you for your efforts, smiles and wisdom you bring into the world.
Oh my god the paddy paws and slow blink (aka kitty love eyes) X) too cute, we need a Vostok spinoff series =p
I would subscribe to that SO FAST!
"It's a little bit bitter, and a little bit pine-y. It tastes like... POISON!" This is the best educational channel ever. Now I know that if I test bitterness and pine I'm probably getting poisoned.
It makes a lovely pink fabric dye
never heard about that, interesting

i was watching your past videos and your humor is great
thanks!
without a doubt your best review ever. Relentlessly honest. Its so refreshing. Thanks.
Thanks Brett!
Strange! Thanks again for the great video bud! Love your stuff so much.
man before this video i was so inspired to eat avocado seeds,
but thanks to the video now im not anymore.
My mother used to boil these than roasted them. Was pretty good if I recalled correctly.
Boiling probably leached away the toxic chemicals.
I really enjoy watching your videos.👍🏻
Seems about as edible as one might expect
Just saw a news article that a Mexican company called Biofase is using avocado pits to make biodegradable straws and cutlery.
The big thing to worry about when eating seeds is a delicious cherry/almondy smell and flavor
Why so?
Cyanide i beleive
@@wiliambanquiter8039 Right on it. Be back in a minute. Thank you.
@@whataworld884 THE ABSOLUTE CLEANEST BATHROOM EVER!!
Lewis Johnson So...almonds?
I like piney flavors. I drink spruce needle tea. But I think I’ll take your advice and pass on this one.
There is no such thing as spruce needle tea.
Tea is literary one single plant specie.
Oh, fine. Tisane, then... if you want to be pedantic.
@@mirandamom1346 its not being pedantic.
Its like saying "spruce needle coffe" or "spruce needle strawberry" or "spruce needle sweetcorn". The shear fact that its liquid and you pour water over it does not make it a tea. Just like it does not make it strawberry or sweetcorn.
Hideki Shinichi You’re going against common usage, but, whatever...
@@mirandamom1346 I dont know where calling a pine needles a strawberry is "common usage" same with tea btw.
The look on your face while eating part of the seed and drinking the tea is all I need to know about it.
Dehydrated avacado seed peeled n sliced turn an orange color. Then grind into powder.
It would probably help to soak them in a few batches of fresh water to remove most of the toxins out? And then roast the seed with salt.
I tried making these in so many ways to cut the piney flavor, including cutting up finely and boiling it in around 5 changes of water. It's just not worth eating IMO, didn't taste good to me no mater how I made it. If you live somewhere where avocados grow, there's a million other things that are just better and safer overall.
yep. maybe as a starvation food, but otherwise not worth the trouble
My GF loves eating avocados so I told her to keep me the seeds and I've been keeping them on the kitchen counter for a few days now and debating to try it out. Then I came upon your video and maybe I'm just going to toss them out. Not going to risk getting sick. Lol
I love how you are so angry about this whole ordeal
My dad keeps avocado seeds and boils them in order to feed the water to his baby goats when they're sick.
4:51 *adjusts glasses*
*smirks* "hnm, you fell for my trap 😏"
*_*N - NANI!?!?!?*_*
I can't believe it, you have the identical scarred up pizza pan I HAD. I eventually got rid of it and got myself some aluminum ones with holes so the crust gets crunchy. It was like Deja' Vu when I saw it though.
Strange seed adventurer back with another video
Love the kitty!
Cats are famously fond of ripe avocados. In Haiti, someone who is very avid about something is said to be “like a cat with an avocado.” But whether or not avocados are good for cats, I don’t know. And I don’t think they eat the seeds, anyway.
Teddles Peddles Are you serious with that comment? That person was just making a nice comment about an interesting, local saying. No need to start making hateful statements like that.
Gary Cooper my cat begs to lick the avocado seeds and skins after put them in the compost bowl.
What about sprouting it?
that kitty is super cute.
What’s the difference between a seed and a pit?
I had a friend who made beer. The funny thing was it actually tasted good. I've had a lot home brew by other people, and it was good, if bitter was good? The home brew my friend made was actually good. She made this Nutmeg beer which was good, that is if you liked Nutmeg. I don't hate Nutmeg, but this beer tasted like Nutmeg extract. She had me drink two bottles, and asked me what I thought. I said okay, but the Nutmeg was a bit strong. Then she asked me how I felt, because Netmeg was a halucingen. I got a little mad, and ask if she druged me. She said, "No, you have to eat a lot of Nutmeg for it to effect you." At that point all I could smell or taste was Nutmeg. I was angry, but didn't saying thing. After a little while I started to feel funny, but nothing I could put a finger on. I told my friend she should've informed me before I drank the beer. I went home, and the cold night air cleared my head. Once home, I felt fine, and then thought I might have over reacted. I called my friend, and said I was sorry for accusing her of drugging me. She was crying, and I felt horrible. Honestly, she was one of my best friends. I went to bed, and awoke three hours later with dry heaves. I had about twenty minutes of trying to puke out nothing, then I felt fine. You have to be careful of what you eat.
Unless you in particular have an allergy or reaction to nutmeg it would take at least two to three teaspoons to have a toxic reaction to it. I have a hard time believing anyone would put that much nutmeg in two bottles of beer! With all the other things that could go wrong with home brews I feel like some other component was a far more likely culprit if you did have a reaction that was that severe from it.
She used a pound of whole nutmeg nuts that she ground, and let soak in the mash.
@@Kikilang60 thanks for your story about nutmeg beer. I'm sorry though that you got sick
Kiki Lang that was sorta interesting
Dibstl: Ha, ha. I was okay. I was only a little sick. I personally don't drink much, but from what I seen, beer, or too much beer makes much sicker than I got. I just got sick for about twenty minutes, then I was all better. I don't think getting sick from alcohal goes away that quik. I was just thinking, "Don't mess around with stuff." For a minute, I thought you were my friend who made the beer. You are not her, right?
Try boiling the pit, then try drinking the tea, doesn't taste like poison :)
can u review coconut types too? i wonder how many are there
soupremo1 7
Jared did a five part segment on the double coconut (coco de mer) found in the Seychelles Islands which is the largest seed in the world and I think he might have done a segment on a sprouted coconut.
Have you tried durian seeds. We boil them.
Yep! there's a video on my channel about it. I boiled, baked and fried them. Frying was the best
You see, the exotic fruits, strange twists on regular farm produce and culture lessons are interesting and all... but the cat. I also come here for the cat.
"You want this? You can't have it. It's not good for kitties (or doggos)" is literally said a dozen times every day in my house.
Cool video. I never would have thought of trying that.
Thank you for posting! This is so bizarre lol. I never would’ve thought to eat it and now I definitely will be saving myself haha.
Thank you for eating the avocado seed, so I don't have to.;-) When you said that it tasted piney and you show a picture of a Norway spruce.
Maybe external use? Athletes foot? , You mentioned fungicide?
The fruit also contains persin, but probably in lower amounts, it's interesting stuff though, persin does indeed "kill" cancer cells, but the bad part is, it also mutates healthy cells into cancer cells, however the research indicates, that it kills more cancer cells than it creates for many types of cancer cells, but still I would not recommend using it as cancer treatment without a oncologist, persin is somewhat similar to those substances used for chemotherapy.
Have you tried jackfruit sseds .... ???? Boiling was the best
yep. there's a video :)
Tastes like it belongs under the sink?
It is like half the avacado in some cases. If you can eat it then great.
This is fairly unrelated to the video but have you had kwai muk? I had one unripe and it tasted like what I imagine an avocado seed would taste like but twice as bitter and even more astringent
I'm so glad you've eaten this, so I don't have to.
This video was somewhat enjoyable.
Thats all I hope for
@@WeirdExplorer and that you consistently deliver :)
Thanks for sparing me the experience, I’ll just stick to making leave in hair conditioner.
Well, you never know when the Apocalypse comes...Avocado seeds will be prized food. I have done desert survival. I ate things that did not really taste that great, but here I am alive thanks to them.
another weird fruit/seed is the staphylea pinnata they taste like Pistachio nuts
Interesting. I've made them into powder and then drunk them straight, but I don't do that any more
3:56 Don't throw away the husks! They are super healthful too, eg. making tea.
OMG does your kitty have two different colored eyes?!?!?! GORGEOUS! ... ok no I'm going back to watch the rest of the video :)
EDIT: Finished watching, that's interesting that it has a piney flavor. Have you ever tried teas from pine needles or cedar? I recently tried cedar tea, it was... interesting..... it's supposed to have benefits for you and I guess tasted nice but I also couldn't get over that I was drinking a tea basically made from the same material as some of our furniture...
..also I'm growing an avacado tree from a seed right now... took FOREVER to get going but once it did it exploded! Now it's about 6 to 8 inches tall. Unfortunately it will take 10 years before it makes fruit :( But that's okay.
fun fact, having each eye of a different color is called heterochromia. Some people have it too, it's really neat.
David Enrique there are a few pictures of such people, including some beautiful women, on DeviantArt. I suppose one could fake it with Photoshop.
Dandelions are bitter,..but are excellent for our health :0)
My god, your cat loves you
Muffin tray prevents rolling !
1:50 I like how you give a fuck on health hype
Your description of the seeds here and palatability of the powder+ the way that you described consuming the powdered seed alternatively (lemon honey etc) is exactly the same as this one- Im curious if you have had guarana?
usually in a powder (even when in amazonian markets), comes from a seed, the taste i dont enjoy or know of anyone who does, but if this means anything to you- it tastes like its really high alkaline content i.e. the way other high alkaline plants have a specific taste. I dare not say more in case you decide to review it and wouldnt want to spoil/unconsciously influence you. Whats interesting is that it has caffeine in it but it also has such a high fat content that it acts like a bullet proof coffee (butter and coconut oil blended) and makes the caffeinated experience smoother, less like a peak/crash type of experience, and more of a slow build with a solid plateau and slow taper.
Just thoughts, thanks again!
You can tell when you don't want to commit to eating something that you know is going to be horrible. You hold it in your teeth and you get this "Why am I torturing myself?" look on your face. 😂
I thought you were supposed to grate it on a salad or something like that.
My dad would say it's better than a sharp stick in the eye
Your dad is absolutely right haha
how dose poison taste like
"It tastes like poison. It tastes like something you shouldn't be eating.". This guy must be an expert on what poison and things you shouldn't be eating taste like, given his track record.
It's not awful. It's not good. It's definitely not awfully good.
So...It's bad?
It's somewhere between so-so and bad.
boiled jackfruit seed tasty for me sir and boiled sweet potato leaf
probably less toxic than nutmeg.
You can use fresh avocado pit shavings as a condiment for a salad. Ideally Hass avocado pit. It does lend an interesting flavor to your food. Its flavor profile is astringent, so that's the flavor you'd be adding to your dish. On its own it's ghastly, but so is pepper or salt.
It probably would have been a good idea to remove the embryo plant before eating it after roasting it, like with gingko seeds. Probably most of the chemicals are in the embryo and not the endosperm.
Set the onion on two hundo
Idk why youtube keeps recommending these to me. Fuck it I'll subscribe. The man drank avocado seed tea. I need to see these things.
the people who say it tastes bitter online ate it raw, try it raw and then you will get it :D
If you ever get the chance to eat these they are awesome! Bunya Nut:

Pretty cool tree
I watched a video of A lady boiling the seeds, peeling them & throwing them back in water to boil..Making Avocado TEA from the seeds!
reminds me of slippery elm tea lol
I fear the day the fruit gets the better of you. Stay safe. Stay smart.
It's said to be good for pain but I don't think it's good at all.
Wow, just watched your video last night on tamarind..
2:38 it contains... person?????
Avocado seeds are people! Avocado seeds are people!
1 of whats the number fifty hundred million billion lol
Try it with butter.
I try not to even have avocado in my house. I like them but they're deadly poison to birds, and parrotlets are worse than any dog or cat. Cats and dogs beg and will get on the counter, but my little food thief can fly, and will attack and bite my neck if I try and keep my food from her. Obviously I do my best to keep poisonous stuff put away where she can't get it, but some things I just feel safer not having it in the house. Also, I can't believe some of the stuff people are eating as health crazes. Nooooo thanks. I'll stick to healthy things that are actually, you know... Edible.
Good idea haha
i only come here for the cat
A strong "tea" made from shredded avocado seeds boiled in water for a few minutes makes a very effective organic pesticide. So, yeah, it might well "taste like poison".
It's too bad that the pit is not so edible. There are so many of them!
