Old head here. There's a long tradition of crate digging and picking just based on the album cover. Many great samples have come from that. You're only limited by your willingness (or lack of) to get creative. Y'all got so so SO many new tools and guides nowadays that we only dreamed of back then. Use them! You got this! Make something we ain't never heard!
There is a Rick Rubin quote that I like, that fits here nicely. "The true magic of the creative process is that there's no magic, you simply set aside time and start working. It's like fishing you know, you can you can go out fishing, but you can't say i'm gonna catch three fish today you know? We have very little control over this process, you just have to start fishing"
I love this, so often I get so caught up in trying to find the perfect sample, sometimes it's better to just pick one and figure out how to make the most of it. That is where the true creativity lies.
True story man! Sometimes I find even 5 dope samples in a row, but I won’t get anything done with them. It’s not about the sample. It’s about the right mood and the creativity.
Definitely! You mentioning mood is so important as the same sample could turn out way different multiple times depending on your state / mood and creativity
It depends on the headspace you're in creatively too. You can hear a sample one day and not be inspired to do anything with it. Then time will pass and you'll hear that sample in a different way because you were in another creative headspace. It happens to me all the time. That's why I never discard records even if they sound like duds at first.
Agree a good producer can make a beat out of anything, no matter what, as long as there's some sounds. Another fun exercise is to take a record that has been sampled before in one of your favorite songs and try to flip it different than the original. Even better if you can find a totally different section to flip that has never been used before.
Making a single random record work. You should make a series out of this because this is actually more valuable than Rhythm Roulette. It really forces you into creativity.
One of the most informative hip hop production videos of 2023, and it’s freestyle which makes it part of hip hop. Hopefully the young cats will value the technical and musical value of this. Thanks brother.
Man you’re right, that’s how the greatest producers would do it, make something out of scraps using whatever vinyls their parents had laying around this just inspired me, keep going bro‼️💯
You made that work, I watched every episode of Mass appeal and they wouldn’t capitalize off all the Chops or they would pass up a sample I would use. great work. This is gonna be motivation for the next cook up
It's simply sound, what we call music when it fits.. Whatever process and given instruments and ability to make it touch the heart and emotions, then it sells but who cares. Hopefully, you have the ability to do it for the love of it while touching folk in a positive way. It's not about a check yet if you can provide while doing what you love, God bless my brothers and sisters🙏
I am digging this vibe, reminds me a lot of Ruckus Roboticus or The Avalanches to a degree. I need to sit down and practice with my gear until the tools get out of my way and I can just enter that creative flow state.
Respect for this man. I love picking up random old records from charity shops and bargain bins and just doing random needle drops. I use SP404mk2 and its all about finding the diamond in the doodoo. Nice beats...
If this is your ethos, then a couple of suggestiions: you can crate dig at a thrift store. Someone's grandfather kicked it and all the records that wouldn't sell just get tossed there. You can pick up the weirdest stuff you won't find anywhere else. The next thing is to call all the record shops and ask them if they ever blow out the inventory that's sat for years. Sometime's they'll do a dollar sale on all the unknown janky stuff that won't move. If they aren't interested, tell them you'll do a Benjamin for 50 records that they want to get off the shelf or out of storage. Here's the thing, the more interesting the album cover is, the more interesting samples you'll find from people no one has ever heard of.
Love the creativity and message Kirk. Creating within defined limits is major game. There's beauty in being able to be frugal in regards to obtaining material things and still finding new inspiration from the same source, again and again. Use your creativity to solve the problem if music isn't something you would normally sample.
Dude! I love this! I didn't see anything or hear anything yet but I liked and subbed already. This is what you need to hear when you need inspiration!!!
Just got me a maschine mk1 on the cheap that needed the USB port repaired, first time using one. You gave me some inspiration Kirk State, appreciate it. Liked and subbed
Found this channel because I was looking to learn how to make beats. I love this beat, I also see you have the akai MPK mini and the Rodecaster pro which I also have. Keep making beats bro!
First things first, shout out to "Kirk" for taking the time to mentor the public & not being stingy on the knowledge....that's awesome Bee....Also I'm a beat maker too & you are absolutely right ...the art of sampling is taking a record & listening to any sound you can mulanipalate it to the drum, add some fx, sometimes add reverb or turn up or down the sample volume. If you really want something nice to your track..... sometimes adding a vocal stab every 5 to 10 seconds & a nice scratch will make any bland original to a classic beat for hip hop. There's millions of.sound you can turn into dope samples. For you up coming producers out there...like "Kirk" mentioned try making a beat when you bored or have a lot of time on your hands. If you run into "Creators Block" don't get discouraged & quit.....Keep trying to perfect your music. Learn to make your own sound. Don't try to sound like "Pete Rock", "DJ Premier" "Showbiz" or any other producer. Again, create your own sound.....once you master the art of production....then you may be ready to sell your music..... 🎹🎤🎧🎹🎤🎧
Free game, it’s also important 2 note that you shouldn’t run away from popular samples, you never know how you can envision something even if its been sampled to all hell.
Fantástico, así es como lo hago, voy al mercado de segunda, encuentro discos que no conozco y jamás he oído y por corazonada me lo llevo para sacarle samples justo así!! Saludos desde mexico!!
Clicked on this because you looked like my favorite And1 hooper Jamal aka Springs!... Dope video, perspective and message. All about True Natural Creativity. Respect!
You dropping jewels bro, and it's facts! With the technology we have in today, and a little patience, we can flip anything lol! Great job flipping that jawn bro, and with that record today in Lofi, it was a ton of cool sounds although it was weird lol! Dopeness bro!🙏🏾✊🏾💚

Excellent
Yes
Also….this is why all 90s producers had a signature sound. They had different samples and build own kits. Now everyone is using the same sounds
Facts 📠
As a modern producer I like downloading hella drum kits and using whatever I feel like. That helps me make interesting drum/melodies combination
Can we even use samples like how they did in the 90s?
I try to balance it. I make alot of my own sht but I definitely dabble in a couple kits here and there too
@@NewVergas ❤
Kirk State, the man who can turn silence into a sample. You heard the man… ‘make it work’ don’t give up. Peace.
🫡yes sir , peace
Rotary Connection did it first
FACTS!!!
yes sir! thanks you inspired me to keep at whether the beat works or not, what really counts is the adventure and the leap of faith.
I love this, so often I get so caught up in trying to find the perfect sample, sometimes it's better to just pick one and figure out how to make the most of it. That is where the true creativity lies.
Yes ! And sometimes they turn out the past too!
Yeah we can flip almost anything if we put the effort in and are in the right creative mind state.
Find one that’s n the a different frequency band and make one of them work

Picasso would stare at his subjects for hours before painting them. Appreciate every sample
How refreshing someone with a positive outlook, and just using the tools on hand. Well done sir.
