Butch Hartman said the hardest part about re-writing the movie was that it was already animated, and all the dialogue he wrote had to match the mouths of the already animated characters.

@@Sorcerer-SMC That’s what happens when working with a major American production company, just look at what happened to Winx Club. Iginio Straffi liked working with Nickelodeon and they chose Nick Jr. writers just to adapt the show to younger audiences. The storyline in the co-produced revival has slowly dipped in quality ever since, possibly due to the pressure that the Executives of Nickelodeon, or should I say, Viacom, put on the writers just to make money. Straffi also lowered the age demographic to adapt to the increasingly younger animation audience.

The best part of Dougal was in his fight scenes. It was absolutely hilarious to see him floundering around trying to fight before inevitably fallling over and catching fire either due to arena hazards or the house robots. No, wait, that's Robot Wars. Sorry, my bad.
@marianne mccrank HIS version of the film was different from the final product, Butch's version had the lines match up with the mouths like a dub of an anime, and no dumb pop culture jokes, that version was so far into production to the point that some of the actors had recorded their lines. But then Harvey Weinstein made HIS own crappy version which became the American version of Doogal. So long story short, Butch wanted to make Doogal GOOD.
The British version had a few flaws to fix and isn’t really cinematic but it’s still enjoyable and makes a good tv special for the show it was based on. Also, you can tell they were actually trying in the original.
The UK version had the moose, too, but it was *silent.* So they let Kevin Smith say a few sentences over an onriginally silent character just to shoehorn in another celebrity.
Funny thing about this film was that it was featured in the 2006 movie, Big Nothing, starring David Schwimmer and Simon Pegg (with an American accent). During a scene where Schwimmer is trying to avoid getting in trouble with a cop who is searching around the house, the cop comes across a TV playing this movie and is laughing at it, saying that he likes the movie. That's just sad.
I usually assume that to Americanize something means to make it crass, stupid and terrible. By the way Matt, Britain and France are Western countries too!
They also got rid of Doogal’s Voice from the trailer, & replaced it with a kid actor for the whole movie. The actor from the trailer has these voice clips. Doogle: The fearless warrior couldn’t make it today, so I came instead. Doogle: No he can’t. Fine, I broke the fall with my face. OH, AYE!
So they didn’t even animate this movie and took it from the UK? Now that’s really lazy of the Weinstien company, and what makes the American version of this worse is that one of its writers was none other than Butch Hartman, yeah that’s right, the creator of Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom, Tuff Puppy, and Bunsen is a Beast, was one of the writers for this lame Americanized version of The Magic Roundabout Movie EDIT: now I actually feel bad for Butch now that I’ve found out (thanks to the people who replied) that he actually wrote a different version of the script to stay true to the original movie, but unfortunately the company rejected and rewrote it their way

I used to watch the original Magic Roundabout on Pinwheel back in the 80s. I love Doogle, so when this movie came out I was excited. And then I saw it. I was so angry. I'm still angry. 😡
When I was little I had bunch of VHS tapes with cartoons recorded from TV. The Magic Roundabout with Polish dub was one of them. II still have some memories of it, but when years I saw posters and other stuff promoting 2005 movie, I did not recognised it was adaptation of this old show until some time later.
I agree with you completely. I watched this movie when I was about 13 and that was a time when I practically liked anything that I saw and I hated this. Good review, Mat! Also, the next review is Rock-A-Doodle. Good luck, Mat.
Same here! As I thought this movie was weird (maybe because of doogals character animation) but if I'd choose between versions I'm sticking to the UK one!

If you guys wanna see an Americanized dub of a foreign property that’s actually done WELL, I’d recommend the Ghost Stories dub. Sure, it’s raunchy and a bit repetitive, but at least the voice actors actually acted like they CARED about the project! P.S. It’s pretty unbelievable that you consider Rock a Doodle worse than A Troll in Central Park. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. 🤷♀️
So now comes the next question: how would you rate the European adaptation? For me it would be the following: Story: 7/10 Animation: 5/10 Characters: 6/10 Final Verdict: 6.5/10
This film is like a feature-length gag dub, but written by film executives and not funny in the slightest. Now the original film isn't a classic, but at least it had some character development during the course of the events. I think that this originally had a short playing before it, which was funnier than the film itself, plus a small bit where Doogal talks to the narrator before the film starts, but those were probably before the home video release.
As a child I really enjoyed dougal and it was one of my earliest introductions to the over used The bad guy vs the good guy. Almost like a gandalf vs sauron or whatever

Why didn't the Weinstein Company just import The Magic Roundabout as is and have a British celebrity that could be recognized by Americans introduce the audience to the larger series before the movie started? That seems like it would've been the better option.
I always thought that "Doogal" was just underated, but I didn't think it was one of the worst animated films ever made. Also when I first saw the trailer for this film in the DVD opening of "The Reef", Doogal sounded like he was voiced by a young man. When I took a glance at the actual movie, Doogal's voice sounded like a child. I feel so robbed.
I'm really glad I didn't see this in theaters, but the weird thing is when I saw the original trailer Doogal sounds like a grown man, and that this has different versions.
I have a horrible flashback watching this movie as a kid. Poor me. Are there really somebody like me who watched that back in the day when it first came out in 2005?
Fun fact: Doogal himself is not a dog. He is in fact a centipede. Each hair is actually a leg with a tiny foot on the end.
That's even more frightening...

Oh no, did Nintendo ripped off Doogal with ARMS????
Find out on Game Theory
-- Pan Pizza of Rebeltaxi
I used to watch the original Magic Roundabout on Pinwheel back in the 80s. I love Doogle, so when this movie came out I was excited. And then I saw it. I was so angry. I'm still angry. 😡
Pinwheel!!!!!
Tracy Palma watch the original
@@cindydillard1825 it's not available in the US.
@@LUVBOTZ
I know but I know someone who uploaded it bit by bit
4:30 WHY ARE HER EYES SO TINY?!?!? ITS UNCANNY!!!
When the movie was starting i went to the restroom then after it I saw curious George with my dad instead of doogal
Jimmy Fallon deserves better!!
Don't worry, he got better in Whip It
I agree! 🐰🐰🐰
I agree with you completely. I watched this movie when I was about 13 and that was a time when I practically liked anything that I saw and I hated this. Good review, Mat!
Also, the next review is Rock-A-Doodle. Good luck, Mat.
Alex Klepp I wonder if rock a doodle will get the animat seal of garbage like this piece of crap did.
George Robertson He did say its his least favorite Don Bluth movie.
Oh my god this movie *does* exist,
I thought it was just a fever dream
Same here! As I thought this movie was weird (maybe because of doogals character animation) but if I'd choose between versions I'm sticking to the UK one!
I enjoy this movie for 2 different reasons
1) nostalgia
2) in a so bad it’s good way
You should review Jimmy Neutron and Barnyard.
He better give Jimmy Neutron the Animat's Seal of Aprove and Barnyard the Animat's Seal of Garbage
He better give Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius a 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10 and Barnyard a 1/10
I still don't get how Jimmy Neutron got an Oscar nomination, it felt like a tv pilot
@@jetisbae2164 Because It's a masterpiece. I'm still angry that it lost to freaking Shrek 👊😡
Kablam zowie! I bet these will be the scores for those movies

I laughed at that because it was so bad
If you guys wanna see an Americanized dub of a foreign property that’s actually done WELL, I’d recommend the Ghost Stories dub. Sure, it’s raunchy and a bit repetitive, but at least the voice actors actually acted like they CARED about the project!
P.S. It’s pretty unbelievable that you consider Rock a Doodle worse than A Troll in Central Park. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. 🤷♀️
I remember accidentally going into the theater room that was playing this.
So now comes the next question: how would you rate the European adaptation?
For me it would be the following:
Story: 7/10
Animation: 5/10
Characters: 6/10
Final Verdict: 6.5/10
Now I know I was a dumb kid, because I used to like this movie
This film is like a feature-length gag dub, but written by film executives and not funny in the slightest.
Now the original film isn't a classic, but at least it had some character development during the course of the events.
I think that this originally had a short playing before it, which was funnier than the film itself, plus a small bit where Doogal talks to the narrator before the film starts, but those were probably before the home video release.
As a child I really enjoyed dougal and it was one of my earliest introductions to the over used The bad guy vs the good guy. Almost like a gandalf vs sauron or whatever
HOLY SHIET i thought that movie was just a dream in my child mind

The UK is a Western country. France is a Western country. "Western" does not equal "American".
I honestly thought this was a fever dream wtf
No one:
Random skeleton in the movie: *pirates of the Caribbean*
Why didn't the Weinstein Company just import The Magic Roundabout as is and have a British celebrity that could be recognized by Americans introduce the audience to the larger series before the movie started? That seems like it would've been the better option.
Yeah, someone like Alfred Molina!
The magic roundabout review (UK version)
Story: 6/10

Music: 9/10
Characters: 6/10
Voice acting: 9/10
Overall: 7/10.
As a kid, I love Doogal. Now I look back and I’m like “what was I thinking?”
Same
I loved this movie as a kid
And almost had forgotten about it
I'm really glad I didn't see this in theaters, but the weird thing is when I saw the original trailer Doogal sounds like a grown man,
and that this has different versions.
It doesn’t help that Tom Baker of Dr Who Star is in the film, But in the UK version.
I have a horrible flashback watching this movie as a kid. Poor me. Are there really somebody like me who watched that back in the day when it first came out in 2005?
HOLY SHIT, for the last 16 years I thought this movie was a fever dream. I really wish it was.
Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen were both in this and CATS 2019.
“Americanising” making things worse just like whitewashing! *Cough* the last airbender and Dragonball live action movie *cough*
Well thanks for digging this out of the depths of my repressed memory.
