The bike running for 2 minutes is considered "hot"? Thanks for clearing up why there's upright marks on the dipstick - I didn't know it was so they could use the same dipstick for trikes.

You can be at the top or bottom marks just not over, he should say its best 2 b in the middle but use some common sense, if u leaving on a 3000 mile road trip u might wanna b more up at the top line.

So the first cold oil level was not correct by a long way.

Doesn’t it mean that it was correct because it ended up right where it should be after he started it and ran it for 2 minutes?

@@boblafountaine9560 hi Bob, hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. You have to make a small allowance for my language as I am English. Of course I agree with you the second oil level in the middle cold is ok and the first level must have been false. I think because of the first false oil level indication, HD should say 'only test the cold oil level after running the engine for a couple of minutes on the side stand,' because if you test it without running the engine first you will (may) get a false low, which some riders will believe and may add oil and that could put the hot oil level above the full mark. In fact they do say (in the manual) to run it on the side stand for a couple of minutes, but only after new oil has been added. My M8 Road King is the 8th Harley in 25 years and I never had inconsistent reading on oil levels before. I think this miss-communication by Harley is a major contributor to overfilled M8`s and oil in the air filter. The guy's comment about the upright oil level is not accurate, the upright oil level scale is for when the bike is on the workshop lift and bing filled by the tech. But do they run it for two minutes Before they test the oil or is the upright level ok?
The reason this came up is I got my bike back from the dealer after the first 1,000km dealer service and when I got home the engine oil was over full and the gearbox (transmission) was low. The gearbox oil level is, according to the manual, supposed to be checked cold (ambient temp). Now dealers are telling riders not to run the oil, hot near the full mark ie 3 lines down and that's complete rubbish, the full hot is the full hot and should be ok to be at or close to. Full oil helps with oil residence time and engine cooling and we need all the cooling we can get here in Asia, mostly 95`F here. If your interested I put on a stage one and tuned it with a V&H FP3. Also diverted the the crankcase breather to atmosphere instead of to the air intake. That has put the engine temp down to 285 from 310. I also added a tank lift which make the engine look much better and I think helps a bit with the cooling. Kind regards, Bill

observation: When I become President all bike dealers must make the customer check the oil or no sale. Frankly they are too stupid to be on 2 wheels.

I never check the oil or any fluids on my CVO, hopefully it will check out soon so I can buy a BMW. This Harley is a POS!
