My all time favorite band is Nirvana, but I respect that their music isn't for everyone and that everyone has different tastes. I really enjoy learning about your tastes because they've inspired mine and I've branched out from what I usually listen to. You're awesome, thanks for inspiring me!
I feel like he’s been listening to smells like teen spirit on the radio since 1992
Nirvana spoke to my teen angst. Can't hate them even when they're not musically challenging. I just wanna let go of my rage, they're perfect on that for me.
As a person who likes Nirvana as well as Tom Petty😬
Kurt cobain was actually really talented being able to turn gritty grunge songs with gross sounding lyrics into radio hits
Nirvana are actually hugely musically "challenging", virtually constantly using chords borrowed from other keys with well crafted melodies to create that twisted sound. Personally they are a little too crazy on the harmonic rule breaking for me id rather listen to something a little sweeter. About a girl slaps tho.
well you dont have to like a band only if they are challenging or whatever. If you like the sound thats all that matters. Also Nirvana is like 30 years old now so at that time their music was considered very good and they do have amazing music so💀 I think he's reciewing bands based on guitar solos? idk maybe he just doesnt like grunge rock

@NO BODY Yes he did.

He also said he can hang with any given shredder. Not that I perceive shred as the highest of musical artforms.
He's probably playing the part of heel
every single track sounds exactly like the track before it. same tones. production. verbs, boring AF
Saw Buckethead in the thumbnail and was getting ready to leave a comment about how his range of music extends far beyond the shred stuff most people know him for, and to give him another shot. Glad to hear you know him for more than just the fast stuff! For anyone else interested in his less shreddy songs, check out some of these albums: Colma, Population Override, Electric Tears, and A Real Diamond in the Rough! They're all wonderful albums that focus heavily on more melodic/emotional stuff, as opposed to the shred!

I have to tread carefully with Zappa - if I listen to his stuff too early in the day, everything else I hear that day sounds boring.

Rush is the reason I'm a musician today... Well, by musician I mean I play music outside of my cubicle job 😔
Alex Lifeson is probably my favorite guitarist
@Alex Murphy : Pink Floyd (Animals album to be specific) is what made me decide to be a musician. But the only guitarist that I ever learned every single note they played on record was Alex Lifeson.
But hey! This is important, because the actual meaning of words matters. If you play an instrument, even sing or compose. You *are* a musician, period. Whether or not you are a _professional_ musician doesn't change that. Nor does how often you play change that.
@Brendan Mather : Thank you for understanding what words mean. That may seem basic and obvious to you, but a lot of people do not, and don't even care that they are wrong, even when it comes to the most basic things. Not talking about anyone here of course. I run into this as a problem mostly on political live streams when racists and other such imbeciles join the chat.
Alan Moore's definition of an artist is someone who regularly puts time and effort into any creative task for it's own sake, regardless of financial gain. If you look at it that way you are a musician.
@Brendan Mather All of you are such awesome people... Thank you for the kind words! I played bass for years because of Geddy and switched to guitar one year ago and I'm just in love with all of it. I think I prefer guitar actually.. It's such a beautiful and fun instrument. Lifeson is a massive influence of course and going back and listening to rush records specifically for the guitar licks instead of Geddy has been super fun. Namaste 🙏
This is the first of your HUFO's i've seen. Love the fact that you can insert some humor into the opinion part of it. Too bad humor drives some people to the brink of hysteria (and not laughing hysteria). Totally agree about Tom Petty and his music. It's so varied and diverse and has so many influences that it never gets old. Save your money on the new vehicle though. The XM T.P. channel is one of my presets but they have such a limited playlist you almost never hear any deep tracks. On the other hand his Tom Petty Buried Treasure Show reruns are the best! His favorite music (allegedly owned by him...which I tend to believe) with him serving as DJ and adding comments and trivia is literally Buried Treasure lol. Just get the internet package and listen at home.
🙌🏻 Nailed my opinion on ZBB. Really liking the content you've got on your channel!
The thing about Frank Zappa is I like a lot of his interviews and album covers ("Ship Arriving Too Late to Save A Drowning Witch" is one of my favourite cover designs ever!) but for the most part I like the *idea* of liking Zappa more than I enjoy listening to most of his music.
Yes, there are about 20 or so Zappa/Mothers tracks that I really do genuinely like, and for any other musician that'd be a sufficient number to justify calling myself a "fan". But in his case that's such a tiny proportion of his song catalogue that I don't feel like I can really say I like much of his music.
Also, it has to be said that a lot of his music gives the impression of radiating a certain calculated smugness. (e.g. that one live performance where he points out all the different time signatures his band members are playing in simultaneously, and Steve Vai's anecdote about his audition for Zappa's band.) It's an attitude of "Look how clever I am! Oh, sure, to *some people* it might sound like a stupid novelty song with crude sex jokes, but *you're* not one of those shallow proles, are you? Because *you* know that only those who have a very high IQ can ever appreciate the layers of irony and satire and complicated music theory I'm putting into every note! In fact I use so many layers of irony, it's like you're getting a full Stewart Lee stand-up set in every song (only less funny)! Aren't you glad I'm letting you hear my wonderful music, instead of that horrible *inauthentic* stuff put out by the rest of the so-called - *gag, spit* - 'music' industry?"
I think that's pretty accurate. Zappa was definitely looking down his nose at the dumb masses in his music. His humor was also really on the nose and not that funny. I like a good amount of his stuff but it's hard to avoid feeling like precious little of it is genuine. So much of it is irony and novelty. The ultimate irony is that he himself was better for the world of music than his music was. He had such a passion for it, but I feel like he was hampered by cynicism and turned to zaniness as a substitute for something more heartfelt.
Nirvana were never my cup of tea, and when I was starting out playing in bands it was all anyone could talk about. I went from not really caring either way to actively hating them as every musician I met tried to cram them down my throat.
Fast forward 25 years and the sonic fatigue has worn off, Dave Grohl has done some amazing work over the years and it's only in recent months that I can appreciate Nirvana for their music on my own terms without feeling blocked in on every side by it.
So technically, you hated nirvana because everyone couldn't shut up about it. I have found nirvana in less than a year right now. No one talks about them anymore and I don't even know how I found them. I know that if I were there when nirvana was at it's prime, with bands like Metallica and Megadeth being there I would most definitely think like you and I would call them sell outs and over rated because of how bad a singer and guitarist kurt was. But now, it seems like a just found a hidden treasury of old music that sounds and feels raw and emotional and heavy.
You are not at all alone in this. It took me forever to even appreciate their music.
@Luke Robinett Context dude. He was saying that as a comparison to the time they came out and also within a particular crowd. When they came out and especially right after Kurt died it was Nirvana Nirvana Nirvana nonstop all the time. Almost like Beatles mania I'm told. I'm not that old so I wouldn't know that.
Fanblade Instruments in utero is really a masterpiece, and a standout among the noise-rock/art-rock genre.
SYX the thing with nirvana, was Nevermind. Bleach was barely a blip on the map (in fact, it never charted in its first release), and In Utero was considered an awful album by mainstream fans (though as just mentioned, loved and praised by those in the shoegaze and art rock community - like those who listened to Sonic Youth, Kyuss and Melvins).
To this day, Nevermind is the album everyone always goes to when speaking of Nirvana... and it’s a little unfair, because their catalogue is far more diverse then most people think

“Soul” is subjective. Just because some random wackjob can play fast, doesn’t mean he’s worse than the random wackjob that doesn’t practice and makes funny faces when playing his instrument, thereby hiding behind the arbitrary and obnoxiously over-cited mask of “feel.”
Have a wonderful day.

A hufo for next time the subject comes around:
What are your thoughts on The Hu? Asking early to give you a chance to give them a listen if you haven't already.
Hot take: If Buckethead had released 10 albums in his lifetime, he would be one of the most iconic guitarists of the modern era. As of this comment, Buckethead has released 306 albums. For every Jordan or Soothsayer or Brewer in the Air or Goblin Shark there's literally 100 songs of mediocrity.
I've listened to around 150 of his songs, I'd say that are around 30% are decent enough, 50% are either mediocre or downright bizarre, and 20% are really good. There are a LOT of gems in the Pikes, if you take the time to look. My favourite so far is Teflector, to me it's in the same league as Soothsayer. I actually haven't heard Goblin Shark, but I'll give it a listen. The best thing about the Buckethead fan community is you can trade song recommendations like playing cards, very few have the commitment to actually listen to everything.
Some songs are hard to put in a category - Crack the Sky is a pretty mediocre song, with a few decent riffs repeated far too many times, but the solo is absolutely face-melting. Frozen Brains Tell No Tales is similar - I love the riffs, they just get repeated so much, but the solo is worth it.
@@gabrielfraser2109 look up there is my personal favorite. But I like really long songs that ebb and flow. Couldn't find Teflector :_(
Spotify only has about 66 or so of them.
That's harsh. I'd agree more with the first response, most of his stuff is decent to extremely good, and 20% is meh to bad, with a lot of experimental shit most won't like
Did you listen to pike 65 by him ?And dont dare to tell me thats mediocrity.hell i have listened to every shredders shawn lane yngwie paul petrruci and that is the epitome of emotional shredding for me with badass riffs and solos.

I love Polyphia. Brought me to another level of guitar.

I live to see moments like this.
Now, the other end of the spectrum. Go out and enjoy you some Ne Obliviscaris. They have a clean vocalist who plays the violin. Super long songs with a lot going on all at once. Essentially the opposite of Polyphia but just as innovative and impressive, just a little harder to digest at times.
*Cheers.*

Sammy G, what's your hufo on Finnish bands with Gothic, melodic tones? Like Swallow the Sun or HIM or Katatonia?
I'm probably biased as a Norwegian who has been exposed to a lot more of their music, but A-ha was great. A lot of their best stuff was released after 2000 (like Lifelines and Summer Moved On). Morten Harket is still one of my greatest vocal idols due to their work around this time.
I'm curious as to Sammy's opinion on Animals As Leaders.
Surprisingly, I share your opinion 4 out of 5 times. Everyone assumes I should like Zappa based off my taste, and while I have a lot of respect for him, I've found him to be almost impossible to listen to. It's the goofy thing that kills it for me.

@@Sergio-fu7mv dude. Rush is so much better than Nirvana, not only in songwriting by also musicianship. Whatever to each their own, but I strongly disagree with that statement.
I agreed with most of this! Great vid bro keep it up
Music is so subjective and this is a good thing, it allows us to be individuals while still being able to socialize with the masses. At 12 years old I became a KISS fan and at 54 now I am still a KISS fan but not even close to the degree I was at that time. My interests in music and life in general changed and as such my musical tastes changed. I like all kind of music, if it reaches me, emotionally, mentally and/or psychologically I can love it. When I am playing my guitar I will usually play along with classic rock stuff like KISS, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Aerosmith, Boston, Ted Nugent and AC/DC. When I want to practice or just improvise I play along with backing tracks I downloaded off of You Tube, the ones that give permission to do this. The backing tracks are usually more blues based, it's odd that when I am trying to improvise solo's I can do so much easier over the more blues or rock/blues backing tracks than if I am playing along with a classic rock type of backing track. You would think that since I love my classic rock so much that would be the area I would excel the most in while improvising, but that's not the case. I am a Truck driver and I have a USB filled with various music I like and on that USB you will find classic rock, country, Elvis Presley, Marty Robbins, heavy metal, contemporary rock and even some opera! I love the song "music of the night" from the Phantom of the Opera. I even have some modern day rockabilly type of stuff, Imelda May is one of my favorites! If you don't know who she is, look up the song, "Johnny got a boom boom" you will fall in love with her voice and her sound, she's not bad to look at either lol. While I like that I have a wide variety of musical taste, certain types I just cannot get into at all. Those would be Rap music, Really heavy heavy metal, death metal , Pop music like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, Polka (lol) and even modern country music- those types are like nails on a chalkboard to my ears lol. Music is great and like you said, if we allliked the same stuff it would be pretty boring.
I don't think you really have to put yourself into a camp of what you like & dislike really. I listen to many different genres but like you, most of the stuff I listened to when I was younger isn't really played anymore. It's just time to move on. Also, any artist that I loved in the past, if I listened to their songs for a few years, it's over. I can't ever listen to them again unless they produce new material. It's the only way.
McDavid looks like a video game when he's skating. It's silly how good he is.
Chris Richard agreed
I see Buckethead and Polyphia, I click.

they're absolutely brilliant musicians but to me they have a somewhat inconsistent discography, i go back to around 6 or 7 of their records. also their other projects like the already mencioned liquid tension and solo stuff are dope.

Thanks for turning so many of us onto Mateus. Very good taste.
His response on Brad Paisley was spot on. Yes he’s a good guitarist and his voice is good but he’s cheesy no doubt. His early music was great his last great songs were “She’s everything to me, Waiting on a Woman, and Old Alabama”. Those songs did have feeling and they were in general good country. But his new stuff isn’t all that great. Still he’s one of my favorite Tele players and i’m definetly considering buying one of his signature Wampler pedals.
If Samurai did his opinion on Eddy Shaver i would love to see it.
you NEVER skip a rush song
Yeah, that was pretty hurtful...
I see Buckethead I click
I'm afraid I have to agree with Sammy G on Buckethead. Whatever it is he's playing, I simply can't stand it. lol. I saw him in concert once & there was intermission where he played a techno song while slinging nun-chucks. I never heard that techno song before. I actually went & tracked down that techno song & added it to my play list. Ioved the techno song, but hated all the other shit he was doing. lol.
@@shitmandood buckethead is definitely not for everyone, but at the same time, if you like instrumentals or just appreciate a good rift and a sweet solo then buckethead does gave ATLEAST 5 songs you would enjoy. Simply because his discography is so vast and he's just all over the place. It's a double edged sword for his fans
And he drops a GTA Vice City reference. Solid.
how can you not love Omar Rodríguez-López ...? just thinking about his style and approach to the guitar (now that you mention) inherently means i'm about to binge hours of it (whilst cleaning). it's about time (for both). at the drive-in (to get it done). so ty. love you, samurai.
