      The one soundtrack that got me into metal music was a game's. The game was EU4 and band was Sabaton. I was owning the soundtrack without knowing it. When I first hear it, i thought it was kinda sick but never thought it was metal. As a simple person, I was thinking that what metal really is just black metal. One day I paused the soundtrack and googled for Sabaton, then I learnt the whole universe of metal. I found metal genres such as folk & symphonic metal which are still my favorites. Then I found melodic death. And found metalcore which is my favorite of all. It turned out that only reason I hated metal was black metal and grind, and I was living a lie for years. (Don't get mad i respect the cvlt and actually enjoy the history of it, but for me it's not the thing that I like to hear from my own speakers.)

      Can you defend cassettes? Like, is this a real argument some people are making?
      Cause cassettes sound like shit. There really are no redeeming qualities.
      MAYBE you could argue that you miss recording directly to cassette, but that's still a dumb argument. You gotta get the timing right, and if you miss part, you gotta wait until the next time you hear the song. And even then, you can get, what, 14 songs on a cassette?
      Make digital playlists instead. You can still carefully curate them, make sure there's a good flow between songs, and a good overall momentum for the playlist as a whole.
      Your playlist can be as long (or short, no wasted cassette space) as it needs to be, will play with decent quality, can be shared with others without losing the copy yourself, and won't take days or weeks to finish.
      So, yeah, no redeeming qualities.

      Exactly! (Not counting the times he was drugging out of his mind) Page was sloppy at times because you can tell he’s pushing himself to try something he may not have mastered yet. In a way he was just the final evolution of all of us “fake it ‘till you make it” guys who may not play perfect, but try anyway.

      Actually, the guitar is still doing way more now than it was 20 years ago. I dare anyone to revisit how dead the landscape was for musicians in the 90's. Thankfully that period died the disgraceful death it should have. I even remember an issue of "Guitar World" magazine in which the editor officially announced the end of those dark ages and I never looked back. (Unless it was from the '80s or an underground group)

      @fjf sjdnx "Rock" songs, I don't pay attention to Pop. Pop was the order of the day in the '90s. With the rise of Brittany Spears and "boy bands" like Backstreet Boys and N-Sync, it was said that rock music was finished. Compared to that time, Rock actually has a presence. With the arrival of high-speed internet and immediate access to any number of music-related media, not to mention that the guitar is treated as more than a glorified bass and guitarists have rediscovered how to play more than barre chords and strumming. Yeah, way better than the days when I bunkered down on catalog-ordered cd's and dial-up mp3's to hear current Rock musicians that actually played something in their songs. Rock has been through way worse than anything happening today.

    5:31 I couldn’t disagree with this opinion more.
    I’m 17, and for as long as I could remember, I’ve been playing video games. And in the better of 2 years I’ve gotten super into guitar. Why? Because of video game music. Specifically the Skyrim bards (but great contributing factors were Prey’s soundtrack, and Doom’s) were really cool to me, and one day, I said “screw it, I’m getting a guitar.” Ever since then I’ve dabbled in a lot of different styles, starting with the classics, Led Zeppelin, GNR, etc. But since then I’ve migrated to different genres that I’ve found and loved. I’ve found guitarists like Maneli Jamal, Shaï Sebbag, Jon Gomm, Lance Allen, and more. I’ve found my place with the kind of guitar I want to play but don’t shy away from new genres. I’ve since picked up a mandolin and started trying to learn some of Bach’s scores (inspired by Chris Thile).
    Long story short, good games brought me to be intrigued in playing music. I was never forced into music and none of my family played. I found my way... even if it was too late for perfect pitch lmao

      I also got into guitar because of video games (Guitar Hero and Doom) but I have to agree on this in general. Most kids these days play video games and watch UA-cam and that is all they do (apart from school). When I look at my 2 younger brothers I can definitely see this trend but of course there will be kids like us who play video games but also learn an instrument or even got into a instrument because of video games. But I stopped playing games and now I play 4 instruments and my ear is developed quite good, being able to figure out most songs by ear and video games just held me back consuming time I could have used otherwise and therefore I stopped, getting really good at my instruments

      Probably half the music I listen to is from video games. Ive always loved music from Halo, Zelda, Mario, Elder Scrolls, and so much more. Video games give birth to absolute masterpieces. And were it not for them I would likely never have been into orchestra and instrumental type stuff. Not to mention when they sometimes do use songs from bands or other artists in a game, it introduced me to those songs and bands I otherwise would of never heard of.

      Oh yeah definitely that's not true. I got into music from playing rock band. It sounds like the same argument as like phones or the internet are killing music, just because people have other things to do besides music doesn't mean no one will do it (and to add on to that, video games/phones/internet aren't the first alternative to music in human history, people have always had other things to do)

    • @jehtsalazar3900
      @jehtsalazar3900 4 роки тому

      lone wolf41696 couldn’t agree more. In fact, personally, I think Halo has some of the best scores in video game history. Specifically Halo 3. But I mean, I always loved kicking on Halo 3 as a kid and hearing that title music. God it was wonderful. That was the game that, from an early age, taught me that orchestral music was great in its own merit. Music that I otherwise wouldn’t have heard given the nature of most music I grew up around. And Zelda games man, don’t even get me started lmao. There’s just so many good OST’s that just expanded my musical ear without me even knowing it at the time.

      Read Zen Guitar. Letting go and allowing things to flow like a conversation can be very difficult for some people. I'm actually on the opposite end of the spectrum. It is hard for me to focus on every little thing I play because the goal I'm always after is trying to get out of the way of my subconscious. To not think or try and anticipate what I'm going to play next. As a matter of fact I will deliberately ignore and just wait until something happens. Combine that with putting as much feeling as you can into every note you play and amazing improvisation is practically impossible NOT to happen! Its the spiritual side of music that has to be understood and practiced as a concept but you cant begin to implement it until you know how to play to some degree first. Zen Guitar. Personally I'm a huge Blues fan, I love playing it, singing it, listening to it, etc. However I think when most people think of "the Blues" they think about the simple E 12-bar blues that their dad and his drinking buddies would jam over for hours on end. I love Page, Clapton, and many of the other Bluesy Brit Rockers as Rock musicians, but I think they more or less ruined what the Blues was supposed to be in most listeners' and musicians' eyes. When I play Blues, I tend to play Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Son House, Howlin Wolf, etc (my favorite Blues players). I'll admit that I play Blues stuff at Guitar Center and other guitar shops (never that loud because holy fuck I'm so self conscious about my playing), but I play old school Delta Blues on an electric guitar and for whatever reason I always have someone come up and ask me about what I'm playing. It may sound like I'm rambling, but my point is that I don't think that the Blues itself is overrated, it's that generic sounding Pop-Blues everyone is used to hearing that is.

      Yeah. The pop bluesy licks and stuff begin to get a bit banal as you listen to it for so long. But again it requires a person of great taste to appreciate even that. Back to your point, yes, blues with jazz colours was a bit hard for me to appreciate, and I guess still is. But sadly I have grown tired of the formulaic blues too. People who can’t stand instrumental music of any kind but claim to love music really don’t. They just love singing.

    • @rileyworkman2175
      @rileyworkman2175 4 роки тому +28

      I think that is a little unfair, I think that lyrical storytelling and prominent lyrical melody cutting through the mix is just so entrenched historically in American music that most people have grown hardwired to appreciate that a lot in their musical taste.
      However, I do agree to an extent that if someone professes to have a deep love for music but can't appreciate an instrumental piece, their love for music probably doesn't go that deep.

    • @littlefishbigmountain
      @littlefishbigmountain 4 роки тому +1

      Well, it goes far beyond America. But besides that, I don’t know what the cause is. However, instrumental music very much can have lyrical melody. You don’t need lyrics for that. As for lyrical storytelling, I agree that it is significant and important and moving. I just don’t think it’s a necessity for every piece of music in order to be interesting or even worth listening to, as many do. In fact, it may not be lyrical storytelling but instrumental music can certainly tell a story. It just doesn’t give it to you outright
      I love lyrics and think they can greatly enhance music and give a whole other level of depth and can imbue it with meaning in a way that nothing else can. Many lyrics have moved me to the point of tears. But my controversial opinion still stands. For whatever that counts for, that is
      And to make a final point, while lyrics can add meaning in a way that nothing else can, so too can instrumental music carry meaning that songs simply cannot. Some music lyrics just detract from. And, while I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like any music with lyrics, I know plenty of people who don’t like any instrumentals. I think anyone who truly loves music deeply will see the value of both

    • @Atlas65
      @Atlas65 4 роки тому +3

      Yes I agree. They are just interested in Lyrics. If you would do a quick survey you would find out that those that are really into music and have a good musical ear, hear the instruments first and the vocal line. Sometimes don't really noticed the lyrics in the song after at least 3. listening of the song. However when you have the average listener that doesn't have a specific ear of music, he will most likely pay attention to the lyrics of the song not really paying attention to the melody, in the vocals or the instruments. Not saying that he won't pay attention to the music at all, just saying that that aspect comes second. The quality of the lyrics will be the main thing that will determine wether that type of a listener will like the song or not. While it is just the opposite for the former type.

    • @littlefishbigmountain
      @littlefishbigmountain 4 роки тому

      Stefán Atli Jakobsson
      You make some good points! And I know some people, not the majority of the people I was referring to but definitely in more extreme cases, that even after hearing a song dozens and dozens of times still don’t listen to the instruments at all except in very specific places (where there are no lyrics like intros, outros, between sections, during solos and things like that) where you’re all but forced to listen to the instruments if you don’t immediately tune the music out when lyrics aren’t present, although I can think of at least one person I know who is that extreme about it! lol
      I also think how much people listen to the instrumental aspects of a song is largely dependent on how they’re hearing it. Through, say, phone or laptop speakers the instruments can be very hard to hear at times, especially low end frequencies like the bass and kick drum, and the overall quality of sound is much lower and less clear. On the other hand, these speakers are practically optimized for the typical vocal range of frequencies
      Also, I think all of them definitely pay attention to the vocals beyond just the lyrics, and an easy way to demonstrate that is to play a song that has what they consider to be bad or unpleasant vocals. Oftentimes the vocals (not the lyrics) ruin songs for people outright, although there are maybe just as many examples of lyrics ruining songs for people as well. I must admit, there are many songs throughout the years which I’ve loved musically but stopped listening to because of the lyrical content, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s a personal choice, and in my opinion that shouldn’t reflect negatively on someone’s musical tastes. After all, lyrics are a very important part of songs
      Needless to say, there’s a lot of factors behind what people listen to when and why

    • @bronsoncarder2491
      @bronsoncarder2491 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I think that's fair to say. I'll even admit to having been an example of this.
      I've always loved singing, mostly cause I'm good at it. So, I decided to pick up guitar, maybe work towards starting a band. I started learning some songs, only to discover... I didn't really know how the instruments were supposed to sound.
      I started learning from tabs (a mistake, for sure), and was amazed to find that most songs didn't sound anything like I expected with the vocals removed.
      It was a huge eye opener for me. A decade later, I'm still trying to retrain the way I listen to music, to pay attention to individual instruments, rather than overall rhythm and Melody.

      Retrospectively (which is all I can offer, considering I was born a couple of months after OHM was released), I think the flak it gets is from being sandwiched between BSSM, which pushed them into the stratosphere in terms of recognition, and Californication, which for a lot of people, is their best effort. It's an awesome album; it was just a product of a very difficult environment, and I personally think that shows in the music.
      My personal take on it is that, in a vacuum, it's a great album. Within the greater context of their discography, it comes off flat. But, they've been around for almost 40 years, they're allowed a misstep here or there. (See: Rush's Caress of Steel, or Led Zeppelin's Presence.)
      I'll close my comment by saying that I'm With You and The Getaway are both solid and deserve more credit than they get. It's called evolution. I personally don't want to hear dudes who are pushing 60 still playing thrashing punk anthems.

      I liked cassettes because they were easy to rewind and learn riffs by ear. Back in the cassette days we didn't have internet and ways to loop sections, then cd's came along as we had to repeat entire tracks.
      I have grown to like digital music, but for a guitarist Cassettes were the best physical media form we ever had. the sound quality never bothered me in the slightest, now scratched CD's have bugged the hell out of me thousands of times.

    • @zachary4670
      @zachary4670 4 роки тому

      Producer here: Tape provided a really nice crunchy tone to music that’s recorded super loud. Digital just sounds kinda sterile. So, yes. Tape sounds more “glued” and rich than digital recording. However, digital offers a lot more separation and clarity (especially in the super high and super low end), so in that case it’s really nice. A popular trend in production is to artificially apply tape distortion selectively across the song, which provides the richness and the clarity together.

    4:10 The Timeless album/cassette/whatever from Goldie sounded amazing in my car's cassette stereo system. You could feel the bass going from side to side in a huge blob, not just panning. Same with BT's Movement In Still Life. Sure, you could probably get that same feeling with CDs. Streaming, I doubt it. But there was nothing wrong with cassettes. Great and better sonic memories with them (of course, I was alone in my car quite a bit driving to and from LA to the OC)

    About the whole thing with music and videogames. I play in an institution for young people, and there a certainly less conventional bands than there was a few years ago. On the other side, there are a lot of rap musicians who weren't there a few years ago. Playing an instrument is getting less common here, but making electronic tracks and rapping over them, is getting popular.
